Is it best to import images as .psd files or .tif or another format?

Hi, when working in the default 1080i is it best to import .psd files or go through the trouble of rendering the .psds to .tifs in Photoshop, to then import the .tifs??
It seems HDTV 1080p .psds have a different aspect ratio -- and, the black background of the .psd file I've imported into FCP appears dull green rather than black. Is there a reason for this? .tifs seem fine...thanks

If your not going to do any individual layer effects or animation then TIFF's would be generally easier and faster to work with. If you are gong to do some effects and layer animation you should do that in Motion then bring the Motion project into FCP.
My Opinion, My Two Cents, That's might be what its worth.

  • Can't import RAW and psd file with same name different extension

Trying to import a folder of images from desktop that I have been working with in Bridge CS3.
LR won't import a RAW file that has a PSD file by the same name. Tried renaming the PSD and deleting the one with the same name, but says it is still there and won't import the RAW file - What is the correct workaround on this? Why can't it import same name files with different extensions?

A forum search for 'RAW + JPEG' will give you more posts on this than you care to read. This will change. For now, import the RAW and PSD's from separate folders and then move them together for within LR.
LR is seeing the RAW as a sidecar to the PSD. It is an unforseen effect of the RAW + JPEG thing where they decided to not import the JPEG, seeing it as basically a preview image for the RAW.

  • Best way to open a .psd file in FW CS5

    Hello!
I'm new to FW and I recently found out about an ongoing issue of opening .psd documents in FW.
Say, I know that it's generally recommended to use adjustment layers in  PS, but in FW they won't open. So maybe then its best to avoid them?  Also I know that when I open a .psd file in FW I get a small window  where I can choose if I want to have the editability or the  appearance...(1st and 2nd options out of 4). Which one is better? Or its  a trial and error thing and for each specific file, its different?  Maybe if I want to use a flatten image in the live site, it would be a  best practice to simply flatten the .psd file into .gif, .jpg or .png  before opening it in FW to avoid the issue? Of course, I mean if I don't  need layers etc. And in that case...which format would be the best out  of 3? .png because its more related to FW or it doesn't really matter?  Another thing is...PNG24 (flattened one)-is it a good idea to use it on  live sites or its best to use .gifs and .jpgs?
Also if you could provide links to more info concerning the abovementioned issues, I'll appreciate that!
    Thanks in advance!

I have posted some details at blogs.adobe.com/sarthak/2010/09/opening-psd-files-in-fireworks.html for more information. I think it is more of trials as you seem new to Fireworks app.
Incase you feel comfortable sharing the psd file, someone might give you the best option to open within Fireworks.

  • FW CS6 internal error while trying to open or import CS5.5 psd file

Just installed CS6 and I'm trying to open a psd file, I see the preview of the file but cannot open or import it, I get the error message.
    Anyone can help me? thanks!

Have you tried saving the psd file in Photoshop with legacy support (Maximize Compatibility)?
If you received this psd file from an external source, it may be a Photoshop CC file. It may not be compatible with Fireworks at all. Or perhaps the psd file is corrupt - try opening it in Photoshop, and resave.
Unfortunately Fireworks' development was stopped last year by Adobe, and it is dead in the water by now. I would not expect a lot of support on their side anymore.

  • PSE9: No thumbnail images of PSD files in Windows Explorer

    Win7 x64 SP1
    PSE 9.0.3
When using Windows Explorer to view a directory, *.psd files are shown with a generic PSE icon rather than as thumbnail images.  PSE9 is set as the default program for *.psd files.
Is there any way to get thumbnail images to display in Explorer?
    Ken

Yeah, I've heard that too, but I'm not buying that excuse:
It's not MicroSoft's responsibility for making someone's thumbnails work.  MS provides the documentation (I assume) for developers to write code for a DLL to display thumbnails in Windows Explorer.  It's up to the developer to do it.
Other software programs which use a proprietary image format do supply those DLLs.  Three examples that I use on my PC are:
        a.  Corel's CorelDraw and PhotoPaint install the appropriate shell DLLs to display their native files as thumbnails.
        b.  Xara also provides a 64-bit DLL which, when manually registered, displays their native file format as thumbnails.
        c.  The open-source Paint.Net group registers the DLL to display their native format as thumbnails.
God knows that those three, and especially the Paint.Net group, don't have the hundreds of millions of dollars and hundreds of developers that Adobe does, yet those three chose to do the right thing and provide what I consider to be an essential feature.
Apparently this has been going on for a long time -- certainly long enough for Adobe to write the darned code, if only Adobe had the will to do it.
PSE9 is the only Adobe product I currently have purchased and this issue just sticks in my craw.  Other than that, I've got nothing but praise for the program.

  • Problem importing .ai or psd file

    Hello,
    I need help.
I downloaded the trial version of Adobe Flash Catalyst Beta on my 2 Apple computers, Imac and Macbook, and I obtain the same error on both, when I try to import an .ai or .psd file (very simple files) :
"Failed to execute runnable (java.lang.AbstractMethodError:org.apache.xerces.dom.Elementlmpl.setTextContent(Ljava/lan g/String;)V)
    Then, the application jam".
    Then, the application quit.
I usualy work on theses computers, with classics applications (Adobe, Quark, Microsoft).
    Thank you
    Olivier

    Hi Olivier,
Fyi, I have reported the exact same problem some weeks ago:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/453493
I guess it has something to do with us running a french Mac OS...
After many re-installs, I gave up and successfully installed it on my (english) Windows XP system.
If only we had the option to install Catalyst in english, this might solve or problem (or not).

  • Import Bulk Photoshop PSD Files

    Hello Forum members.
I don't think there is a way to do this, but I am working on a project where I have over 1000 photoshop psd files of slides scans. I would like to keep them as photoshop psd files because the portrait style shots, I leave the sides as alpha, and put a animated background behind them.
So, when you import a folder of psd files, or all 1000 by holding shift and selecting them all... premiere prompts you for every file to choose how you want to import it. It would be great if this could be temporarily disabled, or set to a default setting, so I don't have to click okay over a 1000 times. Clicking the spacebar I found is easier than mouse clicking, but there must be a way to batch import or something like that.
    Thanks all...
    -nick

Not that I've found. I frequently import 40-50 PSDs (batch-created lower thirds and such), and rampant "OK" clicking is the name of the game. There might be some way to use an external program like AutoKey to create a macro to do this, but I don't know that for certain.
The other "solution" would be to create a multiple-layered PSD and import it as a sequence. I say "solution" because this isn't really appropriate for the number of layers you're talking about. Even if you created 10 PSDs with 100 layers each, the files would be pretty unwieldy.
Make a feature request for batch import--it's sorely needed...

  • Pb export/import keywords with psd file

While working with export and import of metadata, I found the following strange behavior with LR1.3.1:
    0) Initial keywords
    1) In LR, I modified keywords of a psd file
    2) Export of metadata
    3) Remove all keywords of the picture in LR
    4) Then, reload of keywords.
=> I should get keywords defined at the step 1
and I always get initial keywords (step 0). It appears than something is not working as I would expect when importing, just exported data.
Any help to understand this behavior or workaround would be welcome.
    Thanks all,
    PH

As Curt stated, the keywords are written to the file itself and will not be cleared using the clear and import function in Keywords.
Using the clear and import option is useful if you want to get rid of the default keywords or have a better new list for import at hand. If you already have assigned some of these old keywords to files and they are not present in your current list then they will show as italic in the keyword panel (usually at the bottom under "Other keywords") once a file with this old keyword is selected in Bridge.
When a keyword is in italic then you have the option to make it again persistent in your new list using right mouse click menu or leave it as it is. Using the find option in the menu should provide you with the result of all present keywords in the files you are searching in, regardless if they are in the list or not.

  • Trying to edit psd file and it adds another layer

I have a psd file that was created to use as a template (it is all text).  When I try to edit it, it won't let me, instead another layer is added to the file, instead of allowing me to edit the layer that I am in.......what am I missing???

If it's been rasterized, you will not be able to edit it.  You'll have to re-create the text layer.  The trouble is that since it was a template, you may not have the fonts that were used to originally create the template.

  • Need script to batch import images into PSD layer

    Hi,
I have a large group of identically sized Illustrator PDF images (I could convert these to jpeg and resize separately...). I need to import each of these into a specific part of another image, which will always be constant  The incoming image should be the back layer and the file should be saved as a jpeg, and named after the incoming image's file name.
    What's the best approach here?
    Thanks, everybody.

    Hello.
I've tried to adapt this script I to  update a sprite sheet.
The sprite sheet contains 6 smart objects, which where created by importing PSD containing 1 transparent rasterized layer, converting to SmartObjects, then repositioning and scaling.
The script has two faults. Either it runs and replaces the images, but moves them about vertically.
Or it simply throws an "General Photoshop Error. This method may not be.. etc" error and highlights this line :
    executeAction( idplacedLayerEditContents, desc2, DialogModes.NO );
I'm still getting to grips with the completely bonkers API, looking at what looks like assembly language bubbling up through the "baretail" application.
Any tips as to why it's erroring out or coming in in the wrong places vertically (looks OK horizontally) most appreciate.
It's the bizarre intermittent error that bugs me most, sometimes it runs and does it wrong, sometimes I just get a bing  noise.
    Script is here :
    http://www.charlescrammond.co.uk/downloads/ReplaceContentsOfSmartObjects.jsx
Sample PSDs I'm using are  here :
    http://www.charlescrammond.co.uk/downloads/spritesheet.zip
any help much appreciated! meanwhile, I guess back to the UI and manually doing it

  • Importing images in Word file

Hi, after importing a Word doc into RH7 most images are
correctly displaying in their topics but some just show a
placeholder and filename of a .png image. This means presumably
that png images are not supported by the Word conversion routine. I
have imported .pngs successfully in the past in other projects. Is
there a pre-conversion step I can do in Word to images to make sure
they are treated properly by RH.
    thanks,
    mike

Next time you have trouble importing a legacy Word .doc, try
    this:
In Word, create a new file using the New command and the
    default .dot.
Insert the contents of the legacy .doc from the menu command
    (not by cutting and pasting).
In Word 7, they moved the "insert file" command to Insert
    > Object > Text from File . . .
I'd think "insert text from file" would mean pasting
something that doesn't include graphics. However, Word will bring
in everything from the legacy .doc including formatting and styles.
Save As . . . the new document as .doc or .docx. I don't
think RH 7 cares. In our experience, jpegs and gifs sometimes were
missing until we created the new Word file.
Another wrinkle: In Explorer view, with a folder open, File
    > New allows you to create an empty Word document right there.
We had some trouble using one of these for importing and saving the
    legacy .doc.
Didn't have time to track it down. Was the legacy .doc
created in Word 2003, and the conversion to .docx in 2007 glitched
some images? In your case, it just happened to the .png files? As
you previously speculated, images may have been handled differently
    in creating the original .doc.
My hypothesis here is, whatever the reason for images getting
lost in the import to Word, everything gets fixed -- even for pngs
-- when you start with a clean slate in a new Word document created
from the New menu in Word.

  • I`d like to import a 3D-psd-file. Missing the "Live Photoshop 3D"-field in the import-window.

    I got a 3D-file (3ds). I would like to animate it.
In Photoshop there all layers and the gfx is perfect.
    Saving.
While importing the file into After Effects, I should chose "Live Photoshop 3D", but there isn't any possibility.
This should be an add-on, plug-in, etc.
Does anybody know, how to get it..?

What version of AE do you have? If you have CC or CC 2014 (versions 12 and 13 respectively), you can use Cinema 4D to render this. Cinema 4D Lite comes free with After Effects! details of CINEMA 4D integration with After Effects CC

  • How best to import .mod/.moi video files easily into FCP?

We are struggling to import video off a SD card into either iMovie or Final Cut Pro.  How do we this easily?

.mod is a MPEG Program Stream container for standard def MPEG2 video files.
.moi is a management system for playing back those files and does not contain any video.
    More: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MOD_and_TOD_(video_format)
You can probably convert the .mod files to an editable format like ProRes LT with MPEG Streamclip Even if that software cannot process these particular files, it is a very useful tool to have around for lots of other reasons. It is also free so you have nothing to lose.

  • Working in PSE 13, when I open a folder, jpeg files have a preview image, but psd files just have white sheet of paper as preview.  I have to open the file to be able to see it.  Also, there is no thumbnail of the file below the file list.Surely, there's

    The title says it all.

I am using Windows 7 64 bits. Working in the editor, I never use the organizer. The screen above is not the same at all that I got in Elements 12, it was completely different and showed me a thumbnail below the listing when I single clicked on one of the files. In Elements 12, I also could see  a thumbnail of all the file types, not only the jpegs. It is as if the loader is the regular Windows used anywhere, not the right one for Elements. I hope someone understands my problem.. Thanks.
