Is it better to export an iMovie project as QT and use Toast to burn a DVD for general use -  or to export iMovie project to iDVD and burn DVD from there?  Why?

Toast probably maintains better quality if you are just doing simple conversion direct from your camera straight into Toast and then to DVD. There's a lot less transcoding steps and loss of quality in that direct to DVD disk creation in Toast. However, having said that,...There's good arguments probably for both.
What I've seen promoted most often (as most people don't have Toast or aren't motivated to buy it) is to Share to Media Browser (choose the Large size option) and then from inside iDVD click the Media Button and the Movies button to find the project under the iMovie star icon in the Media Browser window. Drag that project into your iDVD project and burn the disk.

  • Burning an IMovie Project over 2 hrs in Toast 7

I have an IMovie project that is 2hrs15min. If I export as a QT movie can I burn it in Toast 7? What compression should I use during the export? Or, should I let Toast do the compressing?

Once you have your iMovie project saved, you should simply be able to drag the QT reference movie over from iMovie into Toast, then it will do the rest. Contro-click the iMovie project icon (probbly in the Movies section of your HD), then click on Show Package Contents, and you will be shown two folders: Cache, Media and Shared Movies. Open the Media folder and drag that QT movie into Toast.

  • Share iMovie project between iMac and iPad?

Is it possible to share and continue a iMovie project between a iMac and iPad?
Or the share is only possible between iOS devices?

In general the simplest way would be to store the document in iCloud, and use iCloud to access the document from both your iMac and iPad.
But your post above says you're running Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6.4).  Snow Leopard is now two years old.  I'm not sure it supports iCloud.

iMovie 08 is not able to open an older imovie project file. I've tried to use the "import" feature, but it doesn't recognize the project file from iMovie4 or 5, even though it is in the same folder with all the media files, transitions, audio cache, etc..

  • Project manager premiere and AE links is there an easy way ?

    Hi,
I would love to know if someone has a better workflow for trimming, even if you want to backup them or just duplicate them for another new project.
I use a lot of dynamic links in my project, I keep everything really organize, so I backup my project by trimming premiere pro, collect files in AE, clean and copy with assets C4D projects, and duplicate the whole folder of audition ( I've never understand how audition manage files so I copy everything)
But I would love just click project manager in Premiere, select my finished sequence, trim the project and create a new folder. the problem is that dynamic links arent copy.
So is there any way to trim the whole CC projects, and what i mean with this is some function where everything on your timeline, AE projects with assets, Audition files assets, Speedgrade sessions, c4d, and premiere project is duplicate and create with everything you will need for backup or create a new project from there
if anyone has a better workflow please let me know
    thanks

Thanks for the suggestion. I was thinking that I would have to do that unless there was some easier automated way. I was hoping there was some automated way that I did not know about..

  • My iTunes library has too much on it.  is there a way to export it to an external hard drive and play movies from there?

I have nearly filled up my hard drive with movies on itunes.  i know i can export everything to an external hard drive, but is there a way to export only the movies, delete those from my hard drive, and then play the movies with the external hard drive connected?

If they don't contain DRM, use a program such as Switch. If they do, you can't.

  • My iMovie project has sound, but no sound when burned in iDVD

I created a movie in iMovie then burned the disc in iDVD. The sound is good when I play the project in iMovie, but after I burned the disc in iDVD I cannot hear any sound. What should I do?
    THanks

The following info was obtained from the Apple knowledge base:
Delete encoded assets from the project.
Burn another disc or Save as Disc Image, mount the image and test in DVD Player and then burn your DVD with Disk Utility.
This issue can also occur if third-party (non-Apple) QuickTime plug-ins are installed. If the issue still occurs after trying the steps above, check for third-party plug-ins in ~/Library/QuickTime/ and /Library/QuickTime. Move these to the desktop, and then log out and log back in to the computer

  • Moving iMovie projects between iPhone and iPad?

I will be travelling overseas soon and want to film video using my iPhone (4s) and then edit using my iPad using iMovie. Is there a simple way to move video projects directly between devices as I will not have access to my PC and my iTunes account on the PC? I have searched forums but I'm getting mixed messages. Can iCloud be used? thx - BV

    Please elaborate - share what?
    Just guessing here...
Any sharing is probably a result of being logged in with the same Apple ID on both devices.
For apps/music: Settings > iTunes & App Stores > Automatic Downloads OFF.
For iCloud: Settings > iCloud > Delete Account.
For iMessage: Settings > Messages > Send & Receive.

  • Using the new iMovie and importing pictures from iPhoto, why are some of my pictures blurry?

I Know this topic has been discussed before, but I couldn't find anything recent about this.  I have iMovie opened & I'm putting the pictures in. In iPhoto the pictures are clear, but when moved to iMovie, become blurry. I know it has to do with the resolution of the picture but I can't find where to change it at

As far as I know, you can't change it: first, your photo is probably a .jpg and iMovie will be adapting it to a video file which will result in somewhat of a loss of quality and second, if your original picture is small, it cannot be enlarged without significant loss of quality as it will get blurry while the individual pixels are being made larger - that depends on your camera settings and its photo output size. So it could be either or both of those that is the problem here. Check your camera and see what size you are taking your pictures in.

  • I finalized my iMovie project. Where are the .mov files? (1080,mov, 720.mov, etc.)

Hi everyone I'm an iMovie newbie,
I finalized my iMovie project. I am using iMovie 9.0.9 by the way. I can't seem to locate the movie files when I go to upload my video to YouTube. I also noticed that the files for my previous videos are gone as well. For now, I'm exporting using QuickTime, but that is taking way too much time and I have never had to do this before. I waited an hour for my project to finalize, where are the files? Where can I find them?
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi JBK
*Huge thanks for this* - the link proved very useful. I tried the MPEG STREAMCLIP option and like yourself exported to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codex @ 100% quality (you can also export in DV mode with much the same results) - it worked fine but file sizes trebled and quality reduced (you can also. As you say its also a pain to have to go though another process. To be able to do it inside imove is a much better option (thanks to tjworld for that, who would have thought of doing that!!!) Surely this will be something Apple have to sort out in the next upgrade. So pleased that I can continue using the Zi6 as it's a really smart little camera - even though mine is pink one (the camera that is!) This is the first time I've used a discussion stream so thanks again all for the help

  • Best method for keeping iMovie projects long term?

I read through 30 pages of posts as I think this is a pretty basic question, but didn't see it directly addressed, so please forgive me...
Some of my movies are mammoth in size (as much as 30GB for 1 movie), which I've learned are due to iMovie handing onto full clip size even when only 10 seconds of it makes it into the final film...
I am starting to move the movies off the iMac onto an external HD, but don't know what is the most economical way to keep a copy digitally without sacrificing a lot of quality? Full Quality QT? as iDVD project instead of iMovie project?
Any suggestions are most appreciated. Thanks to all.

    Hello Toddieu,
I am sure that there are better ways to store your projects, but I have struggled with the exact same question that you have and here are my solutions. I like iMovie 6, but I hate the "non-destructive" editing which makes your projects huge. So, this may seem strange, but I start my movies in iMovie 4. I import all of my raw footage and then do the first round of crude editing which, as you mention, sometimes reduces a 5 minute clip, down to a couple of 10 or 20 second clips. By the time I am done with this process, I usually reduce an hour's worth of "raw" footage down to around 30 to 40 minutes worth of "good stuff". Then I close iMovie 4, copy the movie file (just to be safe), and then open the copy using iMovie 6. When you do this, iMovie 6 will tell you that this movie will be permanently changed to the new format, which is what you want, so click OK. If the movie opens correctly, and everything looks good, then I continue editing the rest of my movie using iMovie 6 (fine cuts, transitions, titles, music, effects, chapters, etc). In the end, using this technique, an hour's worth of edited video uses about 12 gbs of HardDrive. I have several external HDs and I store all of my finished movies on these externals as iMovies (full quality). You don't want to save as DVD projects, because these are compressed files so you will lose some quality.
Like I said, I am sure there are easier ways to do this, and I am interested to hear what other's are doing, but this works for me.

  • Old iMovie Project Comes Out Choppy on New iMovie

A couple of years ago, I asked on this forum the best setting to export an iMovie project in HD and to burn in a Bluray format on a DVD. I got a good answer and it worked. After picking up iMovie'11 I dug up that old project, rendered it and burned it under the same settings as before. This time, the movie came out a choppy. The settings I used, which I noted so I would not forget are:
    mpeg-4
    file format MP4
    H.264 data rate 18000 kbits/sec
    image size 1920x1080HD
    frame rate 29.97
    keyframe 24
    multi-pass
    streaming not enabled
I can go into to the settings I use on Toast but I can see the difference in the resulting video even before burning it to DVD.
Also the file size of the resulting video is bigger than the old file size. (When I couldn't get the same quality I went digging for the old video connected to the old project and found it. But I want to make sure I can duplicate the nice video for future videos which is why I'm writing on this forum.) The old video size in 1.04 gig. While the new video (same project and same export settings) comes out at 1.26 gig.
I must be doing something wrong. But whatever I do--change the settings or try different exports like .mov--the choppiness is still there. I can't seem to duplicate the smoothness of that old movie. Again, I'm exporting the project using the same settings as before.
My main goal is to be able to create a 1080 movie that runs smooth like movies should. I've done it before. Why is it so hard now? How do I fix it?
    Any suggestions?

Yes it is choppy in the QT player as well. And when I say choppy I mean not as smooth as my old movie nor as smooth as when I connect my camera directly to the TV via HDMI cable. It's most noticeable when things are moving fast. It's as if a few frames were pulled out. For example, there's one scene where I'm filming outside the car window. A light pole zooms by. There is an illusion of movement because the pole flashes several times from left to right causing the look of movement. In the new movie, picture only the pole flashing half as much so that the pole moving across the screen looks like a choppy movement instead of a smooth one. Does that help?
It's so odd. I continue to play with the parameters to try and find the difference and I am becoming more convinced it's the software.

  • Just bought FCP, there is no option import imovie project...help!

This is my first contribution to these discussions.
    I just bought FCP.
In my trial version there was an option under file>import>import imovie project
But in the bought version there is no such thing.
How is this possible? Can anybody help me, because I would like to import an imovie project.
    Thanks a lot!

    Hi Luis, thanks
I guess I have to explain a little more.
    I got a new computer.
Old computer was backed up via Time Machine.
I was working on an imovie project in April and I would like to continue now, but this time finish it in Final Cut Pro.
The Imovie project was created in version 9.0.8 and it seems impossible to open it in the newest version (10.0.2) that I also have installed. It doesn't even want to open in 9.0.9. The only way I can see it is by opening the oldest version of imovie. But the project has been changed somewhat and I cannot work on it anymore in this version.
The changes are no problem, I can fix them, but how do I export it into the newer versions is a mystery to me.
So...maybe you are able to give me some tips as how to open this project in the newest version?
Because then maybe I can export it to FCP.
    Thanks

  • Merging multiple iMovie projects

Is it possible to merge multiple imovie projects into one? Or is it possible to merge them into one continuous playing movie in iDVD?

    Hi:
It's a little tedious but the brute force way is to open the first project and save it under a new name. Then open the second. Then literally copy the timeline from the second to the first. Repeat for the third project and so on. It takes some time as the copying process duplicates all the content into the new combined project. This obviously will take a lot of disk storage space! Maybe someone else knows if there is a way to do this working directly with the project files..
Another alternative is to use Roxio's Toast to burn a DVD by simply adding each of the projects individually into Toast. What you lose here is the ability to have the themes and so forth from iDVD but you will get the projects on a single DVD, and they will play in the order.
I am sure someone else has some better ideas about this. I would be interested too as I am in a process of making several small iMovies and want to combine them into several variations.
