Is it better to leave your macbook pro in sleep mode during the night or have it shutdown all night?

During sleep, your MacBook consumes a little part of the battery, so it won't harm leaving it in sleep mode. Also, you will be able to start using it quickly, as you don't need to wait until Mac OS X turns on.
I only recommend you to turn off the MacBook if you are not going to use it for days in order to save battery, but apart from that, you don't need to turn it off

  • Safe to leave NEW macbook pro in sleep mode all day?

This is my first Macbook Pro and wonder if it's safe to leave this thing in sleep mode plugged in all day while at work? I did this w/my ibook but read some stories of the Macbook Pro catching fire??
What's going on with this rumor?
    Thanks!

You're probably referring to PowerBooks equipped with the faulty Lithium-ion batteries from Sony ? I haven't been around lately but I've never heard of Macbook Pros catching fire. The MBPs use Lithium polymer batteries that don't contain the flammable organic solvents found in Lithium-ion batteries.

AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, OS X 10.8 or better and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). It also requires the computer to be using wi-fi.
Patrick is either mistaken or describing basic airplay and not mirroring.

  • Carry MacBook Pro while sleeping mode

Hello should i leave my macbook pro to sleep while i'm carrying this on my bag?
    is it safe?

I do.  Some people say not to, some say its ok, but I did it in grad school and 2+ years later my mac is fine.  I would turn it off duering long trips and put it to sleep during short ones.

  • Serious problems waking up my MacBook Pro from sleep mode

I have quite frequent problems waking my MacBook Pro from sleep mode - often it results in either a black or a totally scrambled screen and only a hard reset will cure the problem (for this time). I have tried to pinpoint whether a certain program that I use last before putting the computer to sleep is responsible, but all attempts so far have failed. The error seems random, but is very annoying since one in about three or four wake-up actions are affected!
I use Parallels Desktop during the day running Windows XP, and in the evenings I use mainly Safari and Mail under OSX. The only other program always open is Mori - a notes/information management tool.
Anyone with similar problems? Any advice??
    Cheers,

    MacBook Pro 15   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hello,
I was browsing the 'downloads' section of the Apple support page and I saw a firmware update that might help you out.
It is called the "MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.2" and it is supposed to fix "several Boot Camp, start up, and wake-from-sleep issues on MacBook Pro computers."
    The web address is ( http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macbookproefifirmwareupdate12.html )
If that doesn't fix it call Apple care.
    Good Luck.

  • Problems with MacBook Pro's sleep mode.

I have done several searches on the forums and cannot find a solution.
I have a Mid 2012 MacBook Pro 13". Recently, my laptop does not seem to "wake up" properly from sleep mode. The laptop goes to sleep perfectly fine. The sleep indicator light is on and "glows"…which is normal. Then not long after, the light turns off. It seems like the laptop has shut down. My computer won't wake when I try pressing keys to wake my laptop afterwards. However, it turns on when I press the power button. When it turns on, the apple logo screen with a progress bar appears on the bottom. It also makes the sounds as if my computer is turning on from shut down mode. The progress bar reaches abut 99% and stops there. No matter how long I wait, the laptop is stuck on that screen. I hold the power button, turn off the computer, restart, and it boots up normally. This only happens with the laptop plugged in to be charged. Sleep mode works fine when I am running on battery.
This did occur shortly after upgrading to Mountain Lion, but I don't think this is the cause as it was working fine the day I upgraded it.
I'm not sure what the cause could be, any suggestions?

Stopped using Google Chrome, problem has not occurred again.

  • Using your MacBook Pro as a Router For the Xbox 360

Not sure how many of you guys have 360s, but I've written up a guide to use your MBP as a connection point for the 360. Basically it involves sharing your Airport with the Ethernet port. Here goes.
How to Use a MacBook Pro as an Xbox 360 Internet Hub v.01
This guide is copyright 2006 Jonathan Ferguson.

I am not responsible for anything that happens that may screw up your Mac, 360, Internet, or anything else.
By reading further you accept full responsibility for any damages or troubles that occur as a result
of your using this guide. K?
Welcome! I recently purchased a MacBook Pro and did not feel like shelling out 130 dollars for the
    360s Wireless Adapter.
Thus I set out to find a solution and it was my shiny new mac that came to the rescue.
I'm positive this can be done in Windows, but I've not taken the time (yet) to test it.
I think it's very simple to follow, but I do recommend that only those with patience and a will to learn attempt the setup.
Also if you don't know how to reset your router, I wouldn't recommend it either. But for the rest, on we go.
You will need these things for this adventure:
    Broadband Internet Access
    1 Xbox 360
1 CrossOver Cat 5 (NOT Patch, so NOT the one that came with the 360)
1 Macbook Pro (the regular Macbook may work, I haven't tested it)
1 Router with wireless and wired connections or 2 Routers linked together, one wired, one wireless.
Plug the cross cable into the ethernet port on the mac and the ethernet port on the Xbox 360. Turn both on.
Go to your system blade on the 360 into the network settings and go to the Sharing area of the
    System Preferences on the MBP.
On the MBP make sure that your Airport Extreme connection is being shared with the Built-In Ethernet
(check the box next to Built In Ethernet and hit the start button at the top.).
Go into Network under System Preferences on the MBP.
Pick Built In Ethernet in the Drop Down menu. Write down the Subnet Mask and IP Address for the adapter,
    you'll need that later.
Contact your router by punching it's IP into an internet browser. (I.E: 192.168.1.1).
This is usually the default IP for any router, so if you don't know what it is, try that one.
It'll also ask you for the password and username which are usually:
    Login: admin
    Pass: password
    Login:
    Pass: admin
    or
    Login: admin
    Pass:
Once you're in find the DNS Addresses (DNS 1 and 2)
(under LAN not WAN if they're different) and write those down. Now it's time to go back to the Xbox.
In the settings tab you'll find a lot of stuff has been set to automatic.
This will not help you, so start changing the things to manual.
Once you get in there, input each piece of information like so:
IP Address: Have a look at the address of the Ethernet Adapter.
Copy it digit for digit only make the last number lower than the last number of the Ethernet Adapter.
(I.E if the Adapter is 111.211.13.5, make the 360 111.211.13.4)
Subnet: This is the Subnet Mask you got from the Ethernet Adapter.
Gateway: This is the IP address of the Ethernet Adapter (NOT the address of your router)
DNS: These are the DNS numbers you got from your router.
Now, before you allow the Xbox 360 to test the connection, make sure that you have a
wireless internet connection coming in on the mac, and that you're sharing it with the ethernet card.
Also, though I haven't tested it yet, keep the Ethernet card on DHCP. Putting it on manual might mess things up.
Et Voila! Let the 360 run the tests.
There's one test that'll take extra long to do but don't fret, it eventually goes through and works splendidly.
I'll update this as I see fit, and feel free to email me at: [email protected] to add/correct/contribute.

Well that's nice and all, but why not just spend the 50 bucks on a router? Also, why do you need a crossover cable? Modern operating systems do not require crossovers anymore.

  • My Macbook pro keeps quitting Safari while browsing. I have to shutdown the computer and restart to access the internet or my email. I t works for about 5 minutes then quits

My Macbook Pro cannot sustain Safari for more than 5 minutes. Once I hit return the "working" icon just keeps going round and round. The only way to access the internet or my email is to totally shut down and then restart.
Is there something I can check to see if there is a virus or is this a common problem. I just returned from a trip to the states and had no problem using my laptop there. I have had no problems until about 6 hours ago.

  • Transporting a Macbook Pro in sleep mode

There are times when it's necessary to transport my Macbook Pro from one location to another. The travel time will vary from 15 minutes to possibly 2 hours. During the trip my computer will either be in a laptop carry bag or a protective sleeve.
Should I completely shut down the Macbook while going from place to place or is it okay to carry it in sleep mode?
Happy Holidays to everyone and thanks in advance for your help.

I've read on these fora that it is important to wait for the sleep light to begin pulsating before shutting you MBP and carting it away.
Yes, it is important to do that. The data is not written to Safe Sleep and the heads aren't parked until the light is pulsing. Definitely don't move it or bump it until that happens.
The reason I probably didn't mention it is because sleep is instantaneous for me now. I decided I could do without the Safe Sleep safety net and so I turned it off. Now I get the pulsing sleep light instantly. I don't necessarily recommend that for everybody, but I couldn't remember the last time my Mac lost data while in sleep so I made a personal decision that I didn't need or want to wait for Safe Sleep.

  • USB doesn't wake up after waking MacBook Pro from Sleep Mode

I have a problem with my new MacBook Pro.
I attach an Apple 20" cinema display to the macbook pro USB connector and then I attach my apple keyboard and mouse to my cinema display.
When I wake up my macbook from being asleep my mouse and keyboard are not activated. I have to unplug my cinema display USB connector and unplug my keyboard from the display and then plug them all back in again to get them to re-activate.
Anybody know why this is occurring, its very frustrating each time my machine goes to sleep

In that case, does the problem still exist when starting up the MBP in Safe mode and then putting it to sleep and awakening it?

  • My repaired water damaged macbook pro has no audio with the icon greyed out. i tried all the suggestions but nothing seems to work. however, on my external clone, the output does work. any ideas about this?

I tried reseting the pram, reinstalling the software, plugging the headphone jack in and out, deleting playlist but nothing works. on the external clone, the output works with noise but still no input device.
can i use a sound card instead?

If you just had the system repaired for water damage what did they replace? If it was the Logic board then all parts should work and if they don't, like the sound, then they didn't fix it correctly and you should take it back to them for a proper fix.

  • Is it better to sleep your macbook pro 13, or just close it?

Is it better to put your macbook pro to sleep or just closing the lid?... if you are just leaving for like a 5 minute.
    Thanks

If the computer is going to be stationary, leave it on power and sleep it.
If the computer is going to be moved and not awakened in a few hours, then don't sleep it, shut it down instead.
Let the battery drain to 20% a minimal one of a time a month.
