Is it better to put my rMBP in sleep mode or should i shut it down?

Hello, I just recently purchased my first ever Macbook Pro (Late 2013). Now I have no clue whether I should put in sleep or shut it down completely when not in use. Some of my friends say that they only shut it down once a month and always put it to sleep when not in use. So if anyone can help me figure out which option is better so I can prolong the life of my new rMBP. Many thanks!

The OP didnt state if he plans on using it as a notebook for the desk, or is packing it around.
Been too many people have their notebooks wake from sleep inside their backpack and burning up.
...wakes from sleep inside a pack and dies from power then possible file corruption, and also heavy DoD (depth of discharge) on a Lithium

When I put my mac in sleep mode I get an error message and I have to click on it and then select whethere to play on computer or airport express.  This was not true with the old Itunes but with this new version it is true.  Any help?

well nobody bothered to give me a hint on what to do, maybe because the problems with the new version of iTunes are really a lot, there is an enormous amount of people out there that have all sort of different problems including mine  so I have decided to return to the previous version which works fine and wait untill the apple people come up with a decent product ....

  • Is it better to leave my mac on sleep mode at night or should i shut it off???

IS IT BETTER TO LEAVE MY MAC ON SLEEP MODE AT NIGHT OR SHOULD I SHUT IT DOWN???

If you have read the instruction manual, it says.  Leave your Mac asleep if you are going to use it the next day or the day after.  Switch it off if you are not going to use it for months.

  • If i go to sleep every day and I came back like 10 or 12 hours later and use the computer, should I shut it down or put it to sleep? Cause I dont know when I have to do each.

I dont know when I have to shut it down and when put it to sleep

Unless you plan not to use the computer for an extended period of days then just put it to sleep. I leave my computers on 24/7. When not in use I put them to sleep but never shutdown.
With laptops I only shutdown for travel.

I use my MacBookPro sporadically during the day.  Should I shut it off after each use or put it to sleep?

You will get various answers to this type of question.  Everyone has their preferences.  Read the user manual that came w/your MBP for sleep & shut down recommendations.

  • How to put MBA in 'Safe Sleep' mode.

How do you put MBA in Deep Sleep 'Safe Sleep' mode? I have been reading many postings here and on the internet and am not getting a definitive answer. The whole topic seems to be rather confusing. Does someone have a simple answer in achieving hibernation sleep on the MBA?
Maybe someone has an example of what they are doing and how they are doing it?
Thanks and I look forward to your replies.

The best I found was using this program: http://blog.kaputtendorf.de/2007/08/17/hibernation-tool-for-mac-os/
I've placed it on my dock and use it when I want to hibernate. I liked the machine's default sleep behavior on the closing of the lid so I did not want to change it.
However, I found that the rebooting is actually faster than hibernation. It takes about half the time to boot than it takes while waking up from hibernation/deep sleep. I compared it with no applications running, which tells me why Apple did not put Deep Sleep in their menus because it is poorly implemented and does not get you the same advantages, which say as you'd have, on a Windows platform.
For example, before Mac I was using a Windows based laptop computer and waking up from hibernation was a big difference in life. My machine would come out from hibernation in 15-20 seconds - compared to 75-90 seconds it took to boot. Waking up from Sleep was comparable to Apple but the battery would be drained much quickly so I never used it for longer 'off' periods. Here my MBA loses about 1.5% of its charge every hour during sleep, so I don't mind leaving it sleeping if I know I'll be charging it the next day.
Since Mac's boot time is quite good so probably it'd make more sense to use sleep during the working hours and shutting it off overnight. Hibernation as a practical option does not exist for me if it takes longer than booting.

  • Was using Ipad and put in sleep mode and it has shut down and wont turn back on

I was using my Ipad last night and put into sleep mode when finished.  Was charged at 98% and now will not turn back on.  I have tried resetting but nothing works.

    Resetting like this?
Hold down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears on the screen Then let go of the buttons and let the iPad start up.

  • Should I put my computer in sleep mode instead of just closing the lid?

I want to ensure that I am not increasing the liklihood of malfunction my simply closing the lid.

Both ways are acceptable.  Read your user manual that came w/your computer regarding "sleep."

    Hey saandyy,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
You can try to restart the iPhone to exit recovery mode.
Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1430
If you can't update or restore your iOS device
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808
Recovery mode erases your device and restores it, which should resolve the issue. If you previously synced with iTunes or iCloud, you may be able to restore from your backup after recovery.
    Have a nice day,
    Mario

  • Energy saver not putting my iMac into sleep mode

I've tried ejecting my firewire drives and other usb devices but cannot get the iMac to actually turn off per its energy saver settings. Screensaver and then screen shut off both activate per the energy saver settings, but the computer stays on. Only way that sleep mode is ever activated is if I'm in the login screen, or if I manually press the button on the back of the computer.
Would really appreciate it if anyone has a workaround to actually make my iMac sleep automatically. Never had this problem with my PC..

This might work for you and save a lot of head scratching. Sometimes these sleep problems just can't be figured out. I've used it successfully. Free

  • Is Sleep mode a better option to Shut Down

I used to recourse to the "Shut Down" option to end my session with my iMac (running OS X). My question is -- is it better to put the machine on "Sleep" mode than frequent shut down. Does it cause any stress on the hard disk and the inter circuitry. Recently I have downloaded a widget named "Deep Sleep" -- I don't know how good is that. My question may appear trivial, but I would like to hear from the experts.

Generally there is little benefit  to booting OSx on /off other than saving a very few watts on your electricity bill.
Right now my Mac Pro (an original) has been running for 4 months solid since last mx checks.
My Mac Mini in the home office normally just sleeps however does get booted into Windows 7 a few days a week.-Its turned off in Windows through.
Modern hard drives do prefer to be spinning consistently and stopping/starting can increase risk of damage /reduced life as they increase/slow down- There is real, through small risk of plates oscillating and crashing.
Unlike Windows, OSx is rather better behaved, especially in managing cashes as well as disk space, and over time doesn't tend to slow down quite so much.
That said there are a few very low level Unix maintenance/cron scripts that run on a reboot. These also run in the back ground on OSx if the machine remains booted and awake overnight as default.
You can also run them in terminal and reset the default time.
If you are interested research Unix Cron scripts

  • Is it better to put Mac in sleep or just power off?

    Hi there,
I am a new user for Mac, (i just have one Macbook Pro) would very much to know the suggestion: either we should close the lip, put the mac in sleep mode or power off every day when finished the work?
which one is better for computer? someone says better not turning on and off every day, do so unless you will not use Mac for days. but I also found people says keep the computer in sleep mode might have trouble to wake it up later...
    any experts suggestion?
    thanks,

I would not regard myself as expert and you are going to get opinions for both approaches. I have just passed on a 3 year-old MacBook Pro that has never been off, apart from updating when restarts are required. Similarly, my iMac sleeps (protected by UPS) and is not turned off. I am happy this way.
I would take slight exception to your process, however. In my opinion, I put the MacBook Pro to sleep by using OptionCommandDelete (or the Apple menu) and wait until the power light pulses before closing the lid.

  • Putting Your Macbook to Sleep?

What is the difference between closing your macbook & pressing apple-sleep? My friend aid that it is better to put your computer to sleep by pressing the apple then hitting sleep. I have been just closing it. Is there a difference? Is one sleep mode better than the other?

I think years ago Macs did go into different depths of sleep depending whether you selected sleep or they dropped into sleep.
However with the MacBook, well certainly with my MacBook, the sleep is the same whether I select sleep from the Apple Menu or I shut the lid. There is no difference, you hear the disk running for about 20 seconds whilst the hibernate image is saved, then the disk shuts down, and the fans stop if running, and the sleep light starts to pulse.

  • Smart Cover doesn't put iPad into Sleep mode in Unlock position after iOS 8.3 update

Prior to the iOS 8.3 update, closing my Smart Cover would put my iPad into Sleep mode when in the Unlock position.  Since the update, this function no longer works in the Unlock position.  In the Lock position, I hear the click and the iPad does go into Sleep mode.  Since I am the only one using my iPad, I don't need it locked when at home.  Has anyone else experienced this problem?

    hi guys. i'm back.
i solved my problem. i refer my iphone 5 to a local distributor. a repairman checked my iphone and i described my problem. he checked my battery. it was fine! then after an hour excavation around hardware solution he told me that the charging kit crashed because of heavy mobility usage!
yes. i did not covered my phone with any cover. the cpu pressure by ios update crashed the kit! now my phone get back after the kit changed and work finally. i restored my phone to ios 8.2 now.
i'm going to buy new iphone. but i'm really confused if such this issue really happened for iphone 6 too!!!!!
    i'm totally disappointed .
