Is it helpful to do a fresh install from time to time
Just curious about this. Back when I was a Windows user it seemed to be a good idea to format and re-install the OS every couple of years. It seemed like it helped cleanup cobwebs in the system from programs I uninstalled or even programs I kept but had upgraded regularly.
As macjack indicates, you're in for an alternate opinion!
I don't think there's any need to do periodic fresh installs and don't agree that a fresh install on major OS upgrades is necessary. I installed 10.6 right on top of 10.5 on my old laptop, and it worked fine. The caveat: my 10.5 install was still in perfect working order. But, it sure saved me a lot of time to just install 10.6 on top of 10.5.
That said, though, I do have a fairly low threshold for doing fresh installs. For example, if my hard drive is ever damaged, according to Disk Utility, I will often just do a fresh install rather than repairing, as I don't know what corruption may have already happened as a result. This isn't a hard and fast rule, though... for example, I recently had a cheap flash drive crash my machine, so I had to force-reboot. I rebooted straight to the Mac OS X install disk and repaired the damage that had been done to my hard drive as a result of the force-reboot, and considered the problem fixed, since it was caught right away.
You'll also hear from people who almost never do fresh installs, preferring to nurse their system along. Personally, I'd rather spend my time reinstalling than hunting down the cause of some obscure and sporadic problem, but that's just me.

ThxYou don't really delete app that way, that way to stop backup for that app in icloud.
You need to delete it from your home screen and then while it still will look like download from icloud - app will start fresh.
However if app uses any account sign in the stuff that is attached to sign in will come back, so if you do not want to you need to use
fresh account as well. -
IWork is not working on Yosemite after a fresh install from the disk
Hi,
I've freshly install yosemite on my computer.
I first reinstalled my computer with original Snow Leopard and then made the upgrade to Yosemite.
After that I used the Migration Assistant to transfert my old applications.
Most of them are now running perfectly but I'm still facing issues with iWork.
It refuses to launch with a message error saying that "Pages" for example is not working with this version of Mac OS and I should make al available update.
There are indeed updates available from the App store but I can't download them because it is not available for my apple ID because someone else bought it or I cancelled the buying ?!
It's strange because I bought it with my Macbook Pro in 2010 and even after a fresh install from the disk, the message is still the same...
Any idea how to unlock these updates?Actually this doesn't explain everything.
I finally reinstalled Snow Leopard / iWork 09' and then upgraded to Yosemite and everything is working like a charm.
This issue has something to do with the use of the "Application migration tool" from Mac Os X Yosemite to collect old applications to the new os from another installation...
I solved my issue this way because I don't have very valuable applications that I want to transfert but for other users, this could be a real issue...

First install through regular update : never finishing the start after automatic restart
First install from scratch: erase through disk utility, install OS X Mavericks (using Recover mode), restart ok - Used Migration Assistant to restore applications and data only - Mail crashed each 5 inutes and asked constantly for password of my 2 accounts, links between folders and files not OK and attaching a doc was complicated. I downloaded the update same problems

Any help is welcomeStill struggling to understand why copying the entire root dir to a disk image and then restoring from that image did not, as expected, yield an identical system, and why I even had to reinstall after doing this.
Because there is a lot more going on under the hood than merely copying files.
The only way to do what you want is to use cloning software like Carbon Copy Cloner.
My advice is to rescue your personal files to a regular non-TimeMachine external drive, Zero erase the ENTIRE drive and install OS X fresh and update, then your programs from original sources and files from backup.
Then, make a bootable clone and you can copy that as many times as you want and each one is bootable.

Help! software won't install from installation
This is so maddening! I'm trying to install the software from the installation CD and I get error messages "cannot install....." throughout the installation. I called customer support earlier and they told me that my antivirus software is not allowing the software to install properly...so I uninstall a bunch of stuff and I'm STILL getting the error messages. So they said somethign about a microsoft Clean Boot, huh? I'm now 2 hours into this project and am really frustrated!! This was supposed to be fun! Anyone experince problems simply installing the software??
heatherd: You don't say what player you have I believe, but you can typically get the latest versions of the software from Nomadworld.com downloads. Sometimes it's better to download from there and install.

Fresh Install - From CD first or latest driver direct

Before I format my XP, I would like to know if I have to install the X-Fi driver from the CD first or can I install the latest driver directly from Creative? Will I get all the other programs included?

The newest drivers are stand-alone drivers. It is unnecessary to install the drivers from the CD first. Applications from the CD other than Creative Audio Console can be installed separately after latest drivers have been installed.

I should mention; for reasons unknown to me, I no longer have use of my disk drive since reinstalling 10.4.You can use software update to install the latest version of Tiger. If you connect an external DVD drive you can install an upgrade to Snow Leopard. The disk is available at the Apple online store:

Further upgrades are dependent upon the EXACT model of your MBP.

My fresh install from the DVD finished and the problem was still occurring. I'm now zeroing the data (one pass), per your suggestion. I'll then do an install of Leopard via Firewire, as I'm unable to start it from the DVD.
I'm curious how a bad install would prevent the computer from starting from a CD/DVD. I'm able to use the install CD/DVD in other computer without any problems, so I don't believe the physical disk is the issue. When I start while holding OPTION, and insert the DVD, it comes up as a boot-able option. Also, the disk image I initially used hasn't had any issues to date.

Following an Apple Support Team member's advice, I retrieved as many files as I could and erased and repaired the HD before completing a fresh install from a bootable USB. Once I restored all of my software I set it backing up to Time Machine over night only to find that it had crashed and restarted over night before that had completed. I attach the crash report below:

How to prepare for FRESH INSTALL?
hi all.
i am about 2 years into my move back to mac with a small professional office and i am considering a fresh install of Lion from Snow Leopard on the Mac Pro (1st generation) and a 2009/10 MacBookPro. I believe the Mac Pro shipped with Leopard and the MacBookPro shipped with Snow Leopard but not sure if i am off by an OS release on that.
in any event, it has been a /ton/ of effort in customizing this setup and it includes an install of Mac Drive, Parallels and other software and software settings. I have also edited the registry on windows in a couple of instances and i have run a couple of Terminal customizations on the mac side.
two questions.
1. what should i do to prepare for a fresh install and how much time might be involved in redoing my setup?
2. is it worth all the effort? i mean, i /do/ have a 2 TB hard drive to take the place of my existing 1 TB drive and I could use the extra space. but at the same time i wonder if a fresh install is necessary.
TIAIf I understand correctly, you are still running SL. As I said, I'm not familiar with this when using any Windows install. If it were strictly Apple, then it wouldn't be a problem. But still if you want to do a full clean install, that would require reinstalling all applications manually. Otherwise, you would still be migrating the same files your already have.
Installing Lion over SL will give you a new OS. Unless you have hard drive issues, this should be all that's needed.
What I would do is check for any PPC applications. If you have any, then uninstall them. Check each application for complete removal instructions.
You might also use an application such as ONYX to caches, etc. Repair permissions. Just to get the system as clean as possible.
Once done, you would want to make a current backup. Maybe even a second just in case. You can always do a restore if nessary.
You could clone your system to an external drive using either SuperDuper or CarbonCopy Cloner. The advantage is that it's bootable. You could then install Lion on either the internal or external drive and make sure it works OK. -

The strange thing is that it used to work in the beginning, but as this is a fresh install I installed a lot of packages, and eventually I got these segfaults.
I'm using an IBM ThinkPad X31.
I searched the Arch forums and Google, but I didn't find any useful information on this issue. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? Can I deliver more information on that matter? Does anyone have an idea how to solve it?

MBP Still running slow after install from scratch
I have a 13-inch, Early 2011 macbook pro. 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5. 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3. It was running very slowly for a few months. Did a disk verify and found the hard drive was corrupt. I did a completely fresh install from scratch and upgraded to 10.9.1. (still running 10.9.1). I did not bring over any of the files or apps from the old system. Wanted to start from scratch.
The problem: It is still slow as heck. I mean, I will click on a folder, it will beach ball for a 3 seconds, then open the folder (for example). It is almost unusable. I just used the disk utility again and checked the hard drive and permissions and no issues were found. Anything else I can try or should I sell and buy something new? I really need to be productive on this machine and this is killing it... Help!Your machine should be fine once it's fixed. This isn't a processor problem. Either the hard drive is bad as a brody suggested, or the SATA cable that connects it to the motherboard is bad. A way to test this is to move the hard drive to an external enclosure and boot it from there. If it runs better, it's the SATA cable.

New install from ftp and cd no sound SOLVED
Hi,
I've done everything I can find to get sound on this new ftp install but can't get sound to work with the 2.6.23 kernel.
I've updated a couple of other systems to the new kernel and it has kept sounds working fine but not this new install. I've unmuted everthing and raised levels etc.

I've done another install from cd this time and said no to update to kernel 2.6.23 so now I've got 2.6.22 and sound still does not work. I've done many Arch installs before and never had this problem. what could I have overlooked? xmms with streamtuner is receiving signal but no sound. No system sounds either.

Help removing imessage from a phone number no longer being used by an iphone
