Is it ITunes or hardware?

I've been trying to fix this (along with Apple Support) since November:
New G5 dual, Tiger. A couple of weeks after I got the machine, it started shutting down without a prompt, as if someone simply pulled the power cord out of the socket. No error message, nothing about kernel panic in any logs.
Most of the time (now about 99.99 percent, but I've been deliberately opening ITunes a lot to recreate the event) it happens when I open ITunes as the first app on a restart. If I putz around and open some other apps first (I usually do: Safari, maybe check email, TextEdit, etc.), most of the time I can get ITunes open without the shutdown. A few times it's shut down on opening another app, and once just by clicking somewhere with my mouse.
Apple support had me reset the PMU and for a couple of days, I thought it was fixed. Then it started up again, only now instead of just turning off, it goes off, then about 15-20 seconds, restarts.
Next Apple had me remove the battery (to discharge built up static). Didn't help.
I went through and trashed one by one, pieces of software that I'd added. Still kept happening.
Next step: archive and install, which I completed tonight. After all of that, I open up ITunes and it still killed my computer.
It makes a little soft clink, then shuts off (and restarts in a few)
AFter the archive and install, I did check software updates and updated to the newest version of ITunes, but it's still doing it.
I just thought I'd check here to see if anyone knows anything about this. I have to wait until next week before the tech guy who is helping me is back at Apple Support.
Also, when I successfully open ITunes (after going through my procedure of opening other apps first...this works about 80 percent), I hear a very faint sound, almost like a short electrical buzz. Quick, very faint. You'd never hear it unless it's dead quiet.
I've also run a hardware check from the install disks, and everything checked out okay.
I've checked for loose wires inside (suggested), deleted ITunes playlist again and again (I don't know if that helps or not, but it was another suggestion).
Is this an Itunes bug, or is it a bad power supply or possibly audio card?
I'm at my wit's end.
Thank you,
Juli

Hi Juli,
Sorry to hear about your problems. The only thing I can think of that is not on your list is the Erase and Install option instead of Archive and Install.
Best Wishes,
Colin R.

  • Itunes cd hardware will not install on Windows xp

When I try to download itunes, I get a message that cd hardware cannot be installed on Windows XP.  How do I resolve this error?

  • Streaming audiophile quality from iTunes - mac hardware limitations?

I listen to a lot of classical music and have recently been experimenting with commercial 24 bit/96 kHz and 24 bit/192 kHz FLAC files converted and imported into iTunes using Max, as AIFF or Apple lossless files (there are some recent issues apparently related to Snow Leopard that make this a bit more clunky than it was, discussed in the Max forum)
The files are appropriately huge (9000+kbs for AIFF 96/192 files) which should keep all the bats and dogs in the neighbourhood happy if I had the appropriate gear for playing it. I have recently been looking at various hardware (Naim and Linnwood most recently) but their dedicated ways of playing back the music are very clunky if you are used to iTunes - i have no wish to change.
However It is possible to directly stream digital (at a max of 24/96 for Naim and 24/192 for Linnwood which looks good - with the very minor disadvantage of no display of track info on the units themselves.
    But this raises several questions:
    1) What are the hardware limits for digital out on modern macs (the computers, not iPhones or iPods) - can they really stream 24bit at 96 or 192 kbs? Or do they downscale, to 24/48 (i think) like the Squeezebox?
    2) I believe that anything over 24/48 is not very practical over wireless (and I already know that Airport express in any case has a limit of CD quality 16 bit). Of the alternatives, eithernet is possible with some sound systems and presumably distance between computer and music system is not likely to be a problem. But - question 2 - are there practical limits on distance for wire and/or optical digital connections from computer digital out to sound system?
    Cheers

You don't mean kb/s - this is the bitrate, used with formats such as MP3 where the bitrate can be specified. You mean the sampling rate, which is specified in kHz. 192 kb/s is pretty mediocre quality for stereo. The bitrate for CD quality is 705.6 kb/s, for 96 kHz 24-bit is 2.3 Mb/s - these are dependent on the sampling rate and bit depth and are not further configurable, so are not usually quoted for uncompressed audio. (An actual CD has a higher bitrate because of the extra bits required for the strong error correction.)
CD quality is 44.1 kHz; 96kHz is the usual maximum. The maximum setting in Audio-MIDI Setup on my 2008 iMac is 96 kHz 24-bit. I'm not in a position to test how this works with iTunes.

I have an optical lead running 10 metres and a coax lead running around 9 metres with perfectly good results. You can get optical splitters and converters which can be used to extend a lead: I've not experimented to find out how long a lead will go before the audio starts to break up., though I would expect a coax lead to go quite a long distance if it's good quality cable.

Not according to what it says in iTunes Connect:

  • ITunes 8.1 Causes Major Problems on 2 Dell Systems

No problems with version 7 or 8.0. Upgraded to version 8.1 on two different Dell XPS desktops. On one, both internal cd/dvd drives are no longer recognized (they are shown as not working in device manager). On the other system, two USB ports are immediately disabled (again, shown as not working in device manager). The first system is about 4 years old and is 100% Intel while the second system is two years old and uses Nvidia mobo drivers with the Intel chipset. I always keep current system drive images (Acronis) and was able to recover by reverting to the earlier image(s), but the problems can ALWAYS be reproduced by installing version 8 of iTunes.
This is a problem that should be addressed, don't you think? I can't possibly be the only one experiencing these issues - though many others may not relate iTunes to hardware problems. And is there no way to get Apple Support to respond to thesye types of problems?

I uninstalled iTunes on an XP Pro SP3 system. The OS failed to recognize the CD with an error code 39 "The driver failed to load" etc.
I found and successfully implemented the following solution at this link:
    http://www.geekswhoknow.com/articles/top10_dvd_and_cd_driveproblems.htm
It was problem #5 in their list.
    5. Problem: XP - Cannot access the CD or DVD drive after an uninstall.
    a. Start Registry editor as in Step 4 (just start regedit)
    b. Locate MyComputer and then HKEYLOCALMACHINE
    c. Expand System->CurrentControlSet->Control->Class
    d. Click the subkey {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
    e. In the right pane, choose UpperFilters (ignore UpperFilters.back entry if present)
    f. On the Edit menu, click Delete
    g. Similarly delete the LowerFilters key in subkey {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
    h. Exit Registry Editor
    i. Restart the computer
    j. If the CD recording program does not work, re-install it and try again.

  • On Mac OSX 10.6.8, link to iTunes radio doesn't lead anywhere in iTunes.

I go into the iTunes store and click under quick links, and the iTunes Radio only goes back to my Library and doesn't have a tab up top for the actual new radio that is supposed to come with the 11.1 update. All I see is Songs, Albums, Artists, Genres, Playlists, and Internet. Internet only streams normal radio.

Found this on another board, looks like we need to upgrade to at least OSX10.7 or later. This is too bad since I have a cad program that won't run on 10.7 and is not supported on 10.7.:

  • 2 Users Sharing one Music Library

    All,
We have our iTunes Music Library on
    Shared Documents\Shared Music.
XP "User A" can access and see all the songs.
For XP "User B" we did:
iTunes, From the File menu, choose Add Folder to Library (Shared Documents\Shared Music\iTunes\iTunes Music).
XP "User BA" can access, but does not see all the songs.
What are the steps involved to allow 2 (or more) XP Users to access one iTunes Library?

    yep.
iTunes is not multi-user. is sad....... here are some other things to consider as well:
apple is propriety and vertically integrated.
apple condemned microsoft and intel. and yet these two companies helped them out later in order to survive.
apple has no choice. there are not many software or hardware peripherals available.
Apple is propriety and still promotes closed systems (e.g. iPOD propriety iTunes. limited hardware support, etc.)
Apple is simplier and less functional. (e.g. no mouse right click..)
apple is still at a premium. (significantly more expensive than equivalent pc)
apple pc's weighs more than other pc's.
Apple provide not choice / options. you can not pick and build your own….
Apple copies and does not innovate (e.g. apple name, GUI, trash, etc.)
apple software is in many cases less functional than software that runs on windows.
apple developer community is very small compared to windows. e.g. go to a software store and see the ratio of apple vs windows compatible software.
apple owners' emotional attachment far outweighs the technical reality

  • Error 4280 again, but this is a poll.  Share your experiences...

    Hello out there...
Okay so I've been researching this error 4280 when trying to burn on iTunes that (according to posters in this forum) signals "optical power calibration error." Trying many of the same brand discs (and another crappy brand), I've come to the conclusion that this may have less to do with iTunes or hardware issues and more to do with cheap blank media.
    Here's why:
    1) DVDs burn fine, even using a freeware burner
    2) I can't burn a CD even with IBM DLA (drag-and-drop recording) or RecordNow!
    3) At first I thought it might have something to do with the iTunes rip engine, but WMP can't burn it either.
    4) I can burn the contents of an audio CD onto a blank DVD-R -- the same brand of DVD-R that I burn movies onto
So, since it is unlikely we all have defective drives and buggy firmware... okay well scratch that, we probably DO have buggy firmware. Since it is unlikely we all have defective hardware, and without a firmware update to depend on, it is only logical that the media is in question.
The poll is... what brand of CD-R or CD-RW do you use, and does it work?
I use Dynex (Best Buy brand) CD-Rs. They are crap and don't work. I also tried one that I got at work with brandname "Simon": same deal.
As they say in grade school... pass it on!

    Hello out there...
The poll is... what brand of CD-R or CD-RW do you
    use, and does it work?
I'm not convinced it is the blank CD's. We have used a variety of brands and have problems far too often. In fact, we have more failed burns than successful ones.
Most recently we have attempted Memorex & Phillips purchased at Wal-Mart.

  • Syncing with OSX and XP?

Hi everyone, having a bit of trouble with our iPhones. My wife and I both have 3G's and have been syncing just fine until I formatted my laptop. I temporarily synced her iPhone on OSX, and now every time I connect her phone to our XP notebook (main computer for syncing) absolutely nothing happens. It doesn't charge, doesn't pop up in iTunes, no hardware configuration, NOTHING.
MY phone works fine, syncs fine, does everything as normal.
Is there an issue with syncing between two different operating systems?
    Please help. I've looked everywhere.

If your wife's phone won't even charge on her computer there may be a problem with the USB port or cable (assuming the computer isn't sleeping). Does it charge when connected to the AC power adaptor? Did you try swapping cables? If it still doesn't work:
    1. Hard reset - simultaneously press the home and sleep/wake buttons until the Apple icon appears (ignore the red slider).
    2. Forced restore - with iTunes open, plug in phone, press both buttons as above until the apple appears, release the sleep/wake button and continue pressing the home button until iTunes sees the phone in restore mode. Follow the prompts to restore,
    3. If still no go - take it to an Apple store Genius bar.
The issue with synching to OS X with an iPhone (or iPod) originally synched to Windows (or visa versa) is that the device's memory has to be reformatted to the different OS to be accessible to iTunes. iTunes will detect the different formatting and warn you about the change before proceeding.

  • Synchronizing my iPhone 3G with my MacPro never finishes!

When I connect my iPhone 3G to my MacPro (both updated with the latest software), iTunes opens and start to syncronize the two. However, the syncronizing of contacts never stops - it goes on for hours. I have to quit it, but obviously something is wrong? I have set up everything as carefully and faithfully as possible.
And also: I purchased a music album from iTunes via the iPhone. When I connect the iPhone to my Mac, I expected iTunes to ask me if she should transfer the new music to my MacPro. Well, this never happens (no question - and I don't know how to do this manually).

Reset the phone: press both home and on/off buttons for at least 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears.  If that doesn't work, Restore in iTunes.

  • Grr!! Why has Apple stopped the Classic! Mine is on its last legs, was going to buy one and now they are all sold out!! Im seriously hacked off Apple! What do i do now!?

I cant believe Apple has discontinued the Classic without telling anyone - I need a new one and now they are all sold out!!!! Its crazy!! I have over 100Gb of music, in car, everywhere! And now when mine finally stops working (its on its last legs), I cant replace it as they don't do anything with the same capacity!! They have invented a great gadget and then stopped it! Usual big company mentality - oh well, time to start researching MP3 - no more Apple for me.....grrrrr

Interesting answer - but equally I am not 'obliged' to continue to use their ITunes or hardware
No one is making you, it's your choice. However, this forum is for people to seek technical help on use of iPods, not for moaning about Apple's decisions.

I have just spent 2 hours trawling online/high st stores, everywhere is sold out - other than online at a premium - im interested in why you find this inexplicable,
Because usually, when a product is discontinued, a store would drop the price to get rid of old stock (of a product that the manufacturer has decided is no longer popular).
    steveoasis wrote:
what other device would you recommend that gives this much storage, ease of use/connectivity in car/home docking etc & does not have a horrible touch screen (which I don't get on with) - at under £200!? Im all ears.....
    I have only two suggestions.
Wait. As per the suggestion in my previous post. There is after all, already an iPhone with 128GB capacity. Technically therefore, that would suggest that it is possible to produce a replacement for the Classic. But since I have no inside knowledge of anything Apple are planning, don't quote me on that!
Work on the basis that since your iPod is only "on its last legs" rather than "not working at all", it still has a useful purpose. Maybe by the time it does stop working, suggestion 1 will have come to pass.
I have no practical suggestion for avoiding a touch screen, it's the modern way!
Of course, if all else fails, and you end up with an iPod that has less capacity than your Library, you could resort to using Smart Playlists to manage your iPod, by using them to add and remove songs (for example, ones recently played that you don't want to hear for a while) and thereby keeping the songs on the iPod within its capacity. If that interests you, please ask and I'll explain it in more detail.

  • My i phone's not working. it said no service. is it the At and t or my phone. i need to use it asap.

My iphone's said no sevice. I'm worried. Is it the AT nT or my cellphone's not working need to use it asap. What should i do?

No Service is usually a reception issue, possibly your carrier ATT is not sending signal, your SIM Card is not functioning, or the iPhone antenna is not working. You can check with ATT, you can check with ATT and get a new SIM Card, or you can trouble shoot the iPhone.
On iPhone tap Settings App>General>Reset near bottom>Reset Network Settings.
Last Resort to rule out Software Problem would be to Restore iPhone Firmware with iTunes.
Hardware would be the copper pin at the "Do Not Remove Sticker" needs to be in contact with the Case Metal Ring (Bezel). Antenna ring is screwed down on top of Bezel at Dock.

  • Changing Thumbnail for iPod Movie in Quicktime

I have Quicktime Pro and I use it to export to movies to my iPhone.
I know you can create a poster frame from any frame in the movie. However, I'd like to make a poster frame that isn't included in the movie. And by that I mean, I'd like the iPod movie thumbnail to be an image not from the movie. I'd like it to be a graphic, and I don't want that graphic to appear in the movie.
Is there any clever way to go about doing this?

Use the Finder Get Info window:
Leopard creates "custom" icons for most file formats. Use it to do the work.
Create your image file (or use one already created). Open the Get Info window and in the upper left corner you'll see a small icon of your file.
Single click (to highlight) and Command-c to Copy.
Switch to your iPod file Get Info window, highlight the icon and Command-v to Paste.
The custom icon should now appear as "artwork" in apps like Front Row, iTunes and hardware devices like Apple TV and the iPods.
