Is it just me or is Firefox getting worse?

I have been using Firefox since it came into the world and have never looked back at IE -- it works, is updated regularly and is free.
Well recently (within the last couple months or so) I have been experiencing a couple really annoying problems related to loading Firefox:
1) I'll load Firefox -- the Firefox window will appear, but the entire Window canvas will be filled with gray. There is no web page, no search bar -- nothing, just gray and the Windows title bar saying "Firefox". If I exit the Window (Microsoft's minimize, maximize, and close buttons are still in tact) and try to restart again I'll either get this gray screen again or Firefox will launch as expected -- as a browser I can use.
This problem is REALLY ANNOYING! So much so that I uninstalled Firefox, re-downloaded the installer and re-installed. The problem persisted so I formatted the ENTIRE box, patched the OS, installed Firefox and the problem still persists intermittently.
And now I'm beginning to notice ANOTHER problem. When I have my browser window open, I often launch new instances of Firefox (as opposed to CTRL+N for new Window -- I use that plenty too). I've been finding that when I click the icon to launch FF when FF is already running, NOTHING HAPPENS! If I click it 10 times, I might have 2 FF windows appear or maybe none! The task manager does not show that I have a bunch of FF instances running -- its as if FF is deciding I don't need another instance because I already have one.
In summary, the browser never behaved this poorly until the past one or two months. It's really starting to irritate me, especially after spending a day wiping my box and reinstalling all the Windows patches. The only add-on I have is Adobe Flash 10 and I doubt that is the issue since the browser start page (default Google/FF) doe snot have any Flash on it ever.
Please fix the code soon! It never used to have these problems.

I agree that Firefox keeps getting worse. I can't stand the current interface with its smaller icons and monochromatic tool bars. Everything is just harder to deal with. I just reverted to 3.6, but was getting messages that certain Web sites needed a browser update. So, now I'm back to this annoying 7.01, but I'm switching to IE8 as my default.
Probably most annoying to me is Firefox's inability to manage history settings so that the user can set time limits on memory, which is an extremely handy way of quickly determining what's already been looked at.

  • Why is Firefox getting WORSE with each new version? The new version eleven crashes my PC about every 15 minutes! Back to I.E.!

The new version 11 crashes my entire PC causing a total restart about every 15 minutes and I have tried everything to fix this problem with no luck so I have now went back to I.E. aat least it doesnt crash and i can watch Youtube vids without hanging up every 30 seconds!
Each new version of Firefox seems to be WORSE than the one before, crashing my entire system is my biggest issue at this point! Some of the older versions seemed stable so what and why has the developers tptally ruined this browser? I am not the only person with these problems I see forums full of users complaining so why isnt the developers putting out a stable browser?
Firefox needs to GET ON THE BALL and get a stable browser out for all of its lowal users this is totally rediculous! I am VERY PISSED OFF!

Whatever you do, don't get version 12 because it's just as bad as the rest. Not responding, not responding is what I see most of the time. I'm tired of looking at that blue circle spinning.
I thought Firefox is suppose to be tops but I've had more problems with it than I had with IE. It literally takes minutes for some pages to load. Tabs and pages open by themselves from who knows where.
The updates and new versions go from bad to worse. I scan my computer several times a week with MSE, Malwarebytes, Spybot and SuperAntispyware, thinking that it might help and it doesn't.
This is pathetic. Firefox, please get someone in there who knows what the heck they are doing. It seems like instead of bug fixes, someone's putting in some bugs.
No one should have to repeatedly do this:
    1. Restart your computer
    2. Clear your cookies and cache
    3. Update your plugins
    4. Restart Firefox in Safe Mode
    5. Troubleshoot your plugins
    6. Reset your Firefox settings
    7. Reinstall Firefox
    8. Make a new profile
    Other solutions
Check for conflicts with your Internet security software
Scan your system for viruses and spyware
Check your hard drive for errors

  • Bartab doesnt work with 6. I want to know what version it is compatible with, 3,4,5, but the site doesnt bother to show valuable information. Firefox gets worse and worse every year. I wonder if google is paying Firefox to be so bad?

A bunch of cable installers run Firefox now.
This isn't as much about bartab as about Firefox.
At one time Firefox wanted to be a great browser, it seems those days are gone.
Did you not realize people are going to revert to previous versions to be able to use preferred addons?
There is something very wrong with the direction Firefox is going.

@dmcritchie max_concurrent_tabs is a solution to a different problem than the one BarTab solves. It just doesn't do what BarTab does, nowhere near as good.
The beauty of BarTab is that it works around time since the tab was viewed, *not* the number of tabs. If I don't look at a tab for an hour, I don't need it loaded, without regard to how how many tabs are open.
@Xoferif My solution, unfortunately, was to revert to Firefox 3.6.20.

  • Why is Firefox getting worse an worse with every update???

Bugs (like the "Download&Crash"-bug) are never fixed, but a lot of useful addons do not work suddenly!
    It has become a nightmare!
You shold take more care of these problems.
I'm no longer willing to make my yearly donation under these circumstances. Sorry...

ReneMacon, I am sorry to hear about the frustration. Some add ons become incompatible after updates. However contacting the developers of these add ons can further investigate the issue.

  • I just upgraded to 4 and I get messages to look at all the new stuff, and/or resart previous session. I just want my old Firefox back. How do I do this?

One of the messages I get says "Now that you've got Firefox 4, learn about all the cool things you can do with your new browser" There are several other little messages that also show up plus the "restart previous session" box. I just want a clean firefox home page to open when I want to use my browser. If I can't get this to stop I'll go back to explorer.

You can make '''Firefox 7.0.1''' look like Firefox 3.6.*, see numbered '''items 1-10''' in the following topic [http://dmcritchie.mvps.org/firefox/firefox-problems.htm#fx4interface Fix Firefox 4.0 toolbar user interface, problems (Make Firefox 4.0 thru 8.0, look like 3.6)]. • Hi, I have HTC Legend on Android 2.2. I just can't download Firefox on my phone, what should I do to get Firefox on my phone?

Hi, I have HTC Legend on Android 2.2. I just can't download Firefox on my phone, because after scanning the QR code and clicking on the link "download for Android" there appears a "Not found" mistake window which informs me that requested file has not been found. What should I do to get Firefox mobile on my phone? Thanks in advance.

So its really useful that you guys do NOT mention this in the linked sys req page:http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/mobile/platforms/
but in the deep in the system hidden wiki page. Please change that! So much people try to download FF mobile beta and have no clue why they cant even download it.

  • Firefox gets problems when 2,7 GB of memory is used by Firefox

Firefox gets problems when 2,7 GB of memory is used by Firefox. Or more. Like 2,8 GB.
It started when I read jpost.com with tens of tabs open. I don't remember how many. But I know there was more than 40.
On the tab I that I was reading, the page turned completely black. Pitch black with nothing else, not even the Firefox interface. It was actually a pitch black shape that looked like a web page in shape. The blackness quickly disappeared and the page was normally readable again. But then it happened again - the page turned black again.
The same page turns black happened again later.
One of my browsing sessions had Firefox slow down so much that you could see scrolling happening when I used scrolling.
Still another time I had 60 tabs open and Firefox worked completely fine without freezes, slowdowns, or black shapes. I could close Firefox by just pressing the red X in the title bar.
Yesterday, I had 50 tabs open and I experienced a slowdown when I looked at the Breaking News headlines. The headlines would show slower than usual. The Breaking News headlines at jpost.com show the headlines a few words at a time until the headline is completely shown. Then the headline disappears and the next starts showing a few words at a time. And speed in general was not what you normally have with a computer that has 8 GB of memory. And a Core i5 processor. I opened two more tabs from the Breaking News section I had opened. After I opened a new window, Firefox froze. I had to close Firefox from the Task Manager by pressing End process. I had used Firefox for 6 hours without ever closing any of the tabs I had opened.
In all of these cases, more than 40 tabs were open. In all of these cases, the slow down or freeze meant I had to use Task Manager and then press End process on the Processes tab. In all cases except the two I describe in the next paragraph, I never close any tabs after opening them. No problems have ever happened until Firefox started using 2,7 GB of memory. Until that point, everything is normal with no freezes or slowdowns.
At two times, I tried to reduce memory usage by closing tabs. However, in both cases this would make Firefox freeze. In one of these cases, Firefox would show something bizarre: there would be about 7 tabs, and one of the tabs would be partly shown. Also, Firefox would show the busy cursor. Firefox did not show how many tabs I actually had. The second time, I tried to close the tabs by clicking Close other tabs in the menu that you get when right-click a tab. The tabs would close fine, but I remember that I opened Gmail and then I did this: I clicked on the Promotions tab. Instead of seeing the tab with the Emails, Firefox showed a busy cursor and the title bar said not responding. Firefox froze.
The reason might be Adblock Plus memory usage. In Adblock Plus home page, developer Wladimir Palant writes in his blog about how Adblock Plus uses a lot of memory: https://adblockplus.org/blog/on-the-adblock-plus-memory-consumption .

One more bit of information: I have a Geforce 640 GT graphics card. My graphics card drivers are old- version 311.41. The newest version of the drivers is 340.52. Would a new graphics card driver solve the problem?

  • Firefox gets stuck after closing any window.

I have this problem that firefox always gets stuck for at least like 20 seconds each time when I close another firefox window. I usually have several firefox windows open at the same time. When I close one of them, the rest of them get stuck for seconds before they can do anything, sometimes crashed (not common). I notice that firefox crashing usually has to do with some firefox windows were running online video, like youtube or others. It can be any advertisement on any website that is in the form of moving pictures. But crashing is really not common. Just getting stuck every single time when I close one firefox window among others.
I thought it was because my computer is old but Internet Explorer doesn't have this problem on my computer. I even downgraded firefox to version 28 ( I used to have the latest, 36?) That did not solve the problem. I am running on windows 7. I would like to keep using firefox because it allows add-on so I don't want to switch to IE. Does anyone know what the problem is? Thanks.

I forgot to mention. This only happens to firefox. If I am running other programs and firefox at the same time, only firefox gets stuck.

  • Firefox automatically crashes after 4 hours of use and only when a textbox is being used - problem now daily and getting worse

This has been going on for a few weeks and started of it's own accord. I have not recently installed any new plugins or scripts, and my PC is protected by two antivirus products and so my system (WinXP) is malware free.
I can browse firefox for up to 4 hours, and then it crashes. No matter what sites I am using, what I am doing or even if I'm at the PC... so long as there's a text box on the page then firefox will crash if the 4 hour time limit expires. I can be just about to save an hours worth of photo captions and lose all that work due to the crash, or can be in the middle of a background download but it'll still crash... daily.
I thought this was a plugin issue, as I have disabled all plugins for javascript handling, flashgot, etc, but still it crashes. (previously on startup Firefox would hang for 5 to 10 minutes and the system would "bing" at me if I tried to click on the firefox window... eventually a 'non responsive script' window would appear relating to a flashgot script). The crash used to go whereby suddenly the page would freeze for a few seconds, followed by a minute or two of safe working, then 2 minutes of freeze and 30 seconds of safe working, with the ratio of freeze-tim:working time working in 20 seconds increments until firefox crashed... now though there is no warning, the page freezes and then it's gone. I have updated firefox several times and still the problem persists. On a previous computer, Firefox degraded to the point where it froze for 4 minutes on any page with a Flash application... now on this computer it has degraded by itself to the point where it crashes after 4 hours of use.
I'm presently using Internet Explorer to type this question because firefox crashed again and I'm not going to sit waiting for it to reload just to get a few numbers from an information screen... therefore further info like crash ID's etc will be update in due time....

Cool, I'll try using the wall adaptor just as soon as I get a convertor for it to convert it to our socket type. It's nice to hear that someone else has experienced the same issue.
I am not using it as a phone in Australia, just the ipod and wifi.

  • Extremely slow in every way. Typing, loading, moving and even just scrolling from the top of the page to the bottom. Keeps getting worse. Maddingly frustrating!!! Help!!

Firefox has gotten extremely slow. Typing, loading, searching, even just scrolling from the top of a page to the bottom. My daughter had the same thing happen to her and had to get her computer stripped down and completely reloaded. I don't have that option. It has no viruses and has been completely freed of all things that could slow it down.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== About a month ago. It is getting worse.

Hmm... try downloading the [http://www.firefox.com latest] version... but if that doesn't work then try [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode Safe Mode]. Not sure what could be causing it...

Don't know if there is an option make the download window stay up, but you can bring it back with Ctrl+J then right-click on the download to open the folder it was downloaded to.

  • Firefox constantly hangs, not responding extreamly slow loading is getting worse

firefox is continuosly hanging in every way posible, my OS is vista have the latest version of fire fox installed, but has been getting gradually worse and worse since approx May, it had done this before but not to the extent it does now. firefox updated/installed the latest version (at that time) about 2xupdates ago, this is when the problems first started.
EG, i will be scrolling down through a page on ebay and for no apparent reason firefox will just stop responding, same thing on you tube when watching videos or searching, also pages are taking a really long time to load sometimes resulting in them not loading at all or loading a blank page. this to has increased in how often this happens. Am seriously fed up with this problem its driving me crazy.
== firefox new version was installed

I'm having the same problem. I am running windows 7 64bit. FF is slow. painfully so. I've switched to Chrome and have no problems. FF just keeps getting worse it seems by the day.

  • Why does it just keep saying "Downloading Firefox" for hours?

I am downloading from Explorer. It just keeps saying Downloading Firefox after I double click on the installer. It goes on for hours and hours. It is ironic that it tells me that "you're about to enjoy the very latest in speed, flexibility and security so you're always in control." Please help.

That's a hard question to answer, since it could be a particular download server at fault, or maybe your security software.
If you are downloading the "stub" installer from the main page, could you try getting the "full" installer from this page (scroll down to your preferred language):

Thank you VERY much!! I was pulling my hair out trying different things!
