I am planning to buy an iphone 5, but i'm wondering if it is legal to cut a t-mobile sim card to become a nano sim? Will it work? I recently watched a man on youtube take a verizon sim card and exchange it with a nano shaped tmobile sim. The iphone worked. I was wondering if i could do the same thing as him with an iphone that uses a verizon carrier. I do not have an account with verizon. I am not willing to pay extra for a verizon account because i already have a contract with tmobile.

Is it "legal". Yeah, sure. If you mess it up you'll need to get a new one from T-Mobile.
Why you would do this when T-Mobile says they want iPhone users on their network and may even have Nano-SIMs that you could get from them is beyond me... Why don't you do it the easy way and get one from T-Mobile instead of ruining the one you have.

Power off the phone. Use a paper clip to pop out the Sim Tray. Insert a Micro-SIM from T-Mobile or a regular SIM cut down to size. Re-insert the SIM tray. Turn the phone back on.

The T-Mobile appears to be unlocked, so it will work on GSM networks. Among gray market phones the US Verizon phone would be a better choice, as it will support LTE (4G) in the Middle East. The other choice is to get a phone in a neighboring country where Apple does have a presence (KSA, UAE, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Jordan). The disadvantage of that, however, is that the phone will not have FaceTime, as those governments have banned it. So in summary, the phone you bought is probably the best choice.
There are likely independent shops that will repair the phone if it needs repair. Did the shop where you bought it offer a warranty?

You can't activate any GSM iPhone without a valid sim card installed in the phone, & if your phone is locked to AT&T, you MUST use an AT&T sim card. You'd only be able to use a T-Mobile sim if the phone was officially unlocked.

Not in the US, at the present time. Apple has not started selling officially unlocked iPhone 5's in the US, & has not announced when they will.

Unlocked an AT&T BB 7290 to use T-Mobile SIM card but now "No Service"

After my trusty dusty blackberry 7290 quit on me    I found another in "excellant condition" on ebay. It was locked to AT&T but I was able to enter the magic code and unlock it.
SIM card is now reporting Network: Inactive (which I understand means that it is now unlocked from AT&T
I inserted my T-Mobile SIM card (which worked in my previous 7290 and currently works in an old Nokia).
The phone opens with the AT&T logo. As I recall, my old(er) 7290 opened to the T-Mobile welcoms screen.
The current OS is v 4.0.2.56 (Platform 1.8.0.143)
I understand that an update to v 4.1.0.377 for T-Mobile exists, but I have yet not been able to locate it.
The Blackberry Desktop recognizes this as a model 7290, but when I click to [Update], it claims there is no newer OS version.
My main problem is it can't find any service. When I enable the wireless, it goes into searching for network mode, but then reports "No Service".
Other than the unlocking I think was done properly, are their any other steps needed to get this to work on T-Mobile? Is it a custom OS T-Mobile install that removed the At&t screen logo and replaced it with the TMO logo?

To be honest not being able to send or recieve messages and data is a carrier issue, not a phone issue since u said that your calls are working, if i were you my first course of action would be to get a new sim card from virgin mobile, or to restore the device as new one more time, if you restore the device as new AND get a new sim card from your carrier and those features still dont work, i would take the device to an apple store

Yes, the message is self-explanatory. You need a carrier who supports Apple's activation policy for an iPhone.

It took me a few days to get head around like all new gadgets. Safari is at bottom of my tablet. Ensure when u in iTunes on computer that u update to iCloud it takes couple hrs. U can ask where u bought. Some give tutes
