Is it mandatory to shutdown oracle database before installing HTMLDB
Hi All,
Is this is must to shutdown the all services like HTTP and others before installing HTMLDB 1.6?If this, then it will be huge impact to deploy the application finally in the production oracle database where parallely others processes and jobs are running.So huge outage might occur.
So is there any other way rather than shutdown oracle database and tnslistener?

When you close a database, Oracle writes all database data and recovery data in the SGA to the datafiles and redo log files, respectively. Next, Oracle closes all online datafiles and redo log files.
When you terminate the instance of an open database/use abort command to close and completely shut down the database the writing of all data in the buffers of the SGA to the datafiles and redo log files is skipped. The subsequent reopening of the database requires recovery, which Oracle performs automatically.
I hope this will help you out to understand the process. -
Do I need start the database before installing Oracle 9iAS portal?
I found the Oracle white paper which talks about installing
Oracle8i EE and Oracle 9iAS portal on windows 2000. Based this
document, after Oracle 8i installaion but before installing
Oracle 8.1.7.1.1 path, all the Oracle database related services
startup type have been changed to 'Manual'.
Based on my understanding, there are some objects will be
created in this database during the installation of 9iAS portal
repository. But this oracle white paper didn't say that I need
have the database ruuning during the 9iAS installation. Do I
need to start the database before installing 9iAS?

Even i am new to oracle application server and had the same doubt that you have.
When you install Application Server there would be two tiers installed, application tier and middle tier, these tiers can be running from the same machine or different machines.
These tiers will have a meta data repository to store application server related data, this database will be installed along with application server.
It is upto you to install "oracle database 10gR2 " before or after installaion of application server, this will be an independent database which will have its own home, but after this installation you will have three homes, ex: infra_home,mid_home and 10gR2_home.
by default oracle_home is set to the last installation that happens so if you install the database 10gR2 after installing application server it will point to 10gR2_home, but if you install 10gR2 before and application server later then the oracle home will be infra_home(if both the middle tier and infratier are on the same machine)
you can always change the oracle home by using set ORACLE_HOME=path/to/oracle/home( in windows)
or export ORACLE_HOME=path/to/oracle/home (in unix)

Shutdown Oracle Database in MSCS Environment
Dear All,
We are facing problem regarding shutdown the oracle database in Cluster Environment. We have installed SAP HA on windows 2003 server and backend database is Oracle.
In order to configure the dataguard we have to create the control file from Primary Database for this purpose we have to shutdown and then startup the database in mount state.
But whenever i shutdown the database from SQL prompt by "shutdown immediate" command and see the status of
database it always remains in open state.
I have tried the following options as well but no success:-
Stop all the instances of SAP and then shutdown the database.
Shutdown the second node and then shutdown the database.
Brought offline the ORACLE<SID> group and then shutdown the database.

The above error message comes if Oracle Listener service is not running. Start Oracle TNS Listener service, if it is not running.
You can create control file while your Primary Database is ONLINE. Use the below mentioned command to create standby control file and use it for recovery at Standby database.
ALTER DATABASE CREATE STANDBY CONTROLFILE AS '/path/to/controlfile.ctl';

our organization is having 10 DBA with sysdba priviladge. We are using UNIX operating system. At morning say for example if some one (SYSDBA user) shutdown the oracle database how other sysdba user trace the user who shutdown the database? the information i need is terminal from where oracle got shutdown and the username? You are right Sybrand, SYSDBA connections are always audited.
My answer was about enabling auditing to any connections, which may give informations about who access to the Database in general. And, this is true, it was not the scope of the OP question.

Installing OAS when Oracle database alreay installed
I am installing Oracle App Server . The installation document says to unset my ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID variables. If i does so, my ORACLE database will stop working.
How can i run both App Server and database on same Node. Is there any workaround for that.Is this Windows or Linux/Unix?
I would recommend installing everything with the same user, for instance ORACLE. For each installation you have, you have to have different profile-environment-shell-files.
For instance:
db.sh - to set database environment
infra.sh - to set infrastructure environment
midtier.sh - to set middle-tier environment
This is an example environment file for a Portal (middle-tier environment):

Install Instr. Says "Shutdown ASM Instance" Before Installing ApEx. Why?
We have installed 11gR2 database. Now we are looking at chapter 4 of the ApEx 3.2 installation guide. One of the pre-install requirements says to shut down the ASM instance. Is it referring to the ASM Instance for the database that we are installing ApEx? It seems quite unclear because the database where we are installing ApEx is supposed to be running.
Why is it necessary to shut down the ASM instance?

That step is no longer mentioned in the 4.0 installation guide.
In 11gR2, Application Express 3.2 is included in the database, unless you explicitly deselelcted that option when creating the database. After backing up the database, I would start with "4.3 Choosing an HTTP Server" in the installation guide and go from there.

I am trying to installing oracle application server on my computer.
Going through installation steps I find that OracleAS metadata repository will be created automatically in a database.
Does the installing OracleAS comes with Oracle database? or Am I required to install Oracle Database before I install OracleAS Infrastructure components?
Please point me in the right direction.

By default for OAS 10g r2 metadata repository get created during your oracle infra installation,
There is no need to install separate oracle Database before installing Application server.
It depends on which OAS are you installing.

Oracle database 11g release 2 installation on windows 7 (64-bit)
I've downloaded Oracle 11g release2 for the first time on my laptop, but before it, I've worked on MySql database and oracle 10g too but they are uninstalled now. The problem is: it is not going as I saw in the video of installation. On my system, it asks for a proxy server, showing a "connection failed" dialog box. I doubt, the second file I downloaded doesn't get extracted to the same folder. But I am not sure, if this were the problem, it(setup) would have even started or not ? then I clicked on the setup and command line prompt appeared.
Then it asked to fill in the email address.
and Now comes the real problem, where it shown "connection failed" dialog box, asking for proxy server, proxy port, proxy username, proxy password. I don't know what values to fill in these columns.

On my system, it asks for a proxy server, showing a "connection failed" dialog box. I doubt, the second file I downloaded doesn't get extracted to the same folder. But I am not sure, if this were the problem, it(setup) would have even started or not ? then I clicked on the setup and command line prompt appeared.
Then it asked to fill in the email address.
and Now comes the real problem, where it shown "connection failed" dialog box, asking for proxy server, proxy port, proxy username, proxy password. I don't know what values to fill in these columns.
You don't need to give it an email address, and then you don't need to provide proxy server information. Try the installation without it.

the error has nothing to do with DBCA. DBCA was simply the last in a long string of victims.
Go back and read the instructions where you downloaded the install media. They state that the TWO zip files you download must be unzipped into the same directory. -
Cloning Oracle Database Machine

I have a Oracle database 11g installed on VMWare workstation. I have done clone of this database machine.
Now I want to use the database from the cloned machine. To use this I have assigned new IP address and new machine name to this machine. What all do I need to change other than setting IP address and hostname?
ThanksMight depend upon how your VMware gets its IP address.
For VMware I would consider both a hosts file entry and a static listener. For the host if you always get the same IP consider adding it under localhost.localdomain localhost :

Sometimes if I have issues I add a new network card to the VM and remove the old one. This has helped "force" a new IP address sometimes. -

From the Oracle point of view we support using DG4ODBC for Oracle to Oracle connections. However, we have not actually tested it as DG4ODBC is primarily designed for access to non-Oracle databases.
How DG4ODBC will work between Oracle databases depends on the ODBC driver and what that supports. You will need an ODBC Oracle driver which you can get from various suppliers including Oracle but also vendors such as DataDirect, Easysoft etc. You could try a Google search.
You say you do not want to use database links but that is how DG4ODBC is used, You cannot do -
sqlplus user/password@dg4odbc_oracle
Once Dg4ODBC is setup and configured as in this note - if you are using Linux 64-bit -

then in the Oracle database you create a database link and select from tables in the other Oracle database -
