Is it my display or motherboard

Here's another question regarding the video "card". My MacBook's screen will not work... it's showing everything blurred or streaked though when I move the mouse I can see the cursor moving, though streaked, and if I open a window via command it looks like it opens. So I hooked up my mini DVI adapter and connected to my TV, of all things, and viola, it works. Nothing else seems wrong with the computer.
The person I got this MB from said that she took it to the apple store and was told the motherboard was bad. If that were the case due to a bad video card wouldn't there be issues with the DVI adapter?
I'm just wondering if I actually have a bad display instead? Does anyone know how I could check this out without running to the apple store?
Much thanks in advance...
Mark

I think the best thing to do it take it to the Apple Store but make a point that it works fine through your TV. May be worth taking your DV leads with you as well just in case.
Going off topic slightly, does anyone know how much a 'Mac Genius' needs to know to be a 'Mac Genius'? I always wonder if the answers you get from them depends entirely on who serves you. Luck of the draw kind of thing!

  • HELP!! - Brand New z87gd85 no display and now no power ?

I bought new PC 2 days back here's the config -
    Processor - 4770k
    Motherboard - MSI z87GD65 gamming
GPU - MSI TwinFrozer GTX 780 gamming
    RAM - Corsair vengence 8gb x 2
    PSU - Corsair TX 850
    UPS - APC 1500va Model : BR1500
    Cabinet - Corsair 400R
I assembled everything yesterday but when tried to switch it on there was no display. Motherboard powersup, fans are rotating but no display.
I tried twice and then i removed GPU but got same results with onboard also. I checked both via DVI and vga both on onboard. There was no error code on motherboard debug display it was showing : 00 all the time. There was no beeping or anything.
So I removed everything and tried again with only 1 ram but still same result. But this time I let it run like that for 1 minute and it shut down automatically and there was no sign of power on the motherboard. Since then i tried everything reconnecting cables, restarting PSU, UPS, tried minimal config with just motherboard and cpu only, tried it by pulling motherboard out of case also, etc
BUT SAME RESULTS MOTHERBOARD IS NOT SHOWING ANY SIGN OF POWER ON ANY LED , FAN OR ANYTHING.
I checked my new PSU  on my old motherboard, it worked.
I checked my old PSU (corsair TX 650) on new motherboard (with only mobo and cpu) AGAIN NO SIGN OF POWER.
    IS MY MOTHERBOARD DEAD ?
Any ideas what else I can test ????
This is brand new board didn't worked even once.
After spending fortune on new high end gamming pc it just doesnt work NOT EVEN ONCE. Its really frustrating :|
    Edit:
[Also I contacted tech support but didn't got any notification on my email or anything is this common ? There's no way to track support ticket ?]

Hi APC tells me none of there backup ups are to be used on haswell high performance systems. They told me to change mine to the Smart ups model. Just try it plugged into a anti surge bar and see if that helps. They recommend to never use more than 80 % of what the ups can put out.
If it makes any difference this is my UPS model - http://www.apc.com/products/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=BR1500G-IN&total_watts=200
Its "backup pro" & suppose to be new series as told by customer care but yes 85% efficiency at full load but TX 850 also has 80% efficiency. Still I am not really sure about UPS that's why I called customer care in first place. I will check that again with tech support from APC and I will upgrade if required.
But I don't really think thats the problem since PC isnt working even when connected to the mains directly.

  • Macbook Display - Noise, Interlacing/Dithering, and Offset

    Hello,
Starting yesterday, my 2011 Macbook Pro (specs below) has been having issues with its display / graphics card.
Frequently, especially while using resource-intensive programs like Chrome or Logic, my display will begin to introduce noise, then go black for a second, then come back on with the screen's image offset, wrapping around from left to right:
After a couple seconds my computer freezes (beach ball, but can still move mouse). Then my keyboard becomes unresponsive, leaving me no option but to shut down.
I double-checked the connection between the display and motherboard - seems fine. This is more likely a problem with the video card, I'd imagine, but I'm no expert. Thoughts?

  • Yoga 2 Pro stuck volume, missing cursor, onscreen keyboard unusable

I'm having several issues with a Yoga 2 Pro laptop running Windows 8.1 that's about a year old.
    1) Volume is stuck at 0. I can raise the volume, but it automatically lowers back down to zero, as if the volume-down key is stuck. The volume indicator is always onscreen.
    2) Cursor is missing, however I can still right click/left click. Also, the cursor will reappear when I uninstall the Synaptic touchpad drivers.
    3) The onscreen touch keyboard is unusable. I can click on the icon and it pops up, but it immediatly goes back down.
    4) Side screen charms won't stay on screen (example: pressing the F10 key or project screen the side menu pops in but immediately pops out, similar to the keyboard). Also if I swipe in from the right and try to use anything (devices, settings, etc.) it does not respond
    5) Pressing the start key doesn't bring it to the start screen, but holding it down for a few seconds does.
The above problems still exist in safe mode.I'm thinking it's a hardware issue or a bad connection of some kind. I've tried:
    1) Removing/reinstalling various drivers (touchpad, audio, graphics)
    2) Disabling services (YMC comes up often when looking at trackpad problems, but this hasn't worked for me)
    3) Uninstalled/reinstalled programs (Energy Management, Transitions, etc.)
    4) Did a complete factory reset at one point, had no effect.
I've had the problem a couple times before, and one thing that DID work was to hold down the power button for ten seconds while the computer was off, then let it reboot. Unfortunately that solution is no longer working. The threads I've linked below have been the closest I've found to a problem like this, but neither of their solutions worked for me.

Any help would be much appreciated! Definitely affecting my usability of this otherwise wonderful machine.

Update in case anyone else comes across a similar problem: I ended up sending my laptop into warranty, and it came back a week later working completely. No idea what the problem, cause, or fix was, although they didn't replace any major parts (battery, cable, cpu, fan, hard drive, keyboard, touch pad, display, memory, motherboard...going off the list they sent back, none of those were replaced), so I'm not sure what to think. Not even a factory reset. I'd love to know what the issue was, in case it comes up again but am happy that my laptop is once again functioning in either case!

  • Photoshop tools dont respond after Windows 7 pro 64 bit installed

I have the Abobe creative suite CS4 web premium student edition and I have recently upgraded to the Windows 7 professional 64 bit OS. Some of my tools in each program do not respond to clicks. In the Photoshop program my cursor in each tool is broken apart and I see 3 of the object such as an arrow or hand. Very difficult to fine tune anything. This is just one of the issues of many.
I have tried to RESET the settings file by holding CTRL-SHIFT-ALT on startup and it had no effect. I've tried reinstalling my display drivers, upgrading my display and motherboard drivers from NVIDIA, formatting the Hard drive and reinstalling my operating system, and lastly I have tried reinstalling my Adobe Collection.
I've run out of answers and need help.

  • Is it possible to detach an external firewire BOOT disk during sleep?

    Hi,
I have an aging PowerBook G4 17 inch (3 years and 3 months) which is still good and fast enough for my needs. Last year the display and motherboard were changed which cost me some money so I would like to hold on to it for one or two more years. Yesterday I suddenly heard a strange noise coming from the hard disk and the Finder and Disk Utility ran extremely slow afterwards for some time. I shut it down, waited a couple of hours and now everything seems to be normal. I take it the hard disk might soon die (Toshiba make, more than 3 years old, a lot of graphics work requiring disk activity). Or 1° I replace the internal hard disk or 2) I buy an external firewire disk to boot from (which I can continue using afterwards if the laptop goes dead). I am leaning towards the second solution. However I would like to know:
    1. Is it good behavior to put the computer to sleep, detach the hard disk (from which I booted) and attach it before waking it again? This would make it easy to transport it. I did a test and it seems to work however one test might not be conclusive...
    2. Would my system be as fast as with an internal one (assuming I buy an external FireWire 800)?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!
PS: what is the average life of a PowerBook? The sales guy from a local Apple shop told me that after 4 years any Mac is good for the trash.

The sleep removal will work as long as the battery doesn't go flat but is not really good practice to remove a boot disk after startup.
Speed would be reasonable but internal would be better, replacing the internal drives on AlBooks is a bit fiddly but it can be done, see here for a guide.
The guy in the shop was trying to sell you a new Mac, there are people out there still using 10+ year old Macs!

  • Installing ram boot loop

I got recently 16 gb of ram and I installed 12 gb fine in DIMM 2,3,4 but when I put ram in DIMM slot 1 then no display comes on and pc is in boot loop And if i remove from DIMM 2 ram and put in DIMM 1 then the pc boots fine with only 3 sticks of ram. All rams are good and all slots are fine aswell No issiues in ram slots nor the ram. So how do I get the bios to recognize and boot my pc with 4 sticks of ram ? EDIT: Basically what im saying is i cant use 4 ram sticks but only 3 if i put fourth one in then the pc will go in boot loop with no display
My motherboard is B75A-G41 and yes all pins on cpu part are straight. Ram model is ASint DDR3 4gb-1333 SLA302G08-EDJ1C 1233

    Board: MSI B75A-G41
    BIOS: Newest Available

HDD: 500 gb samsung 7500rpm hdd
    OS: Windows 8.1 64bit and windows 7 64bit
CASE: old early 2000 case for nostalgia :3
EDIT: also tried the cmos reset 2 times already and trying all rams individually was the first thing i did. I remember when i modified the timmings in bios then the pc started fine but didnt recognize 1 and 2 slots and when i changed the mhz to 1066 then again all started fine but didnt just recgonize the 4th stick in dimm 1
2nd EDIT: If it turns out i cant get them 4 rams running so is it okay to have only 3 sticks in pc?

  • Can Envy K203TX recovery disks be used to recover an Envy K204TX?

Hi, The first thing i did when i got my Envy K203TX notebook, was create a set of recovery disks. Then I discovered that the notebook has several issues.HP sent me an on-site tech, and the tech said these issues were caused by several faulty hardware (display panel, motherboard, and the case has a bad battery lock). He helped me return the notebook as DOA. The problem is, HP store couldn't get me another K203TX, I paid like $150 more and upgraded to an Envy K204 TX. I now have the 204TX and this notebook has no issues at all, it's as good as it can get.My recovery disk set from the Envy K203TX is still with me. Question> Can I use these disks to recover my K204TX in case disaster strikes? Or shall I throw away these disks and create a fresh set of recovery disks for this computer?

The 203 has 15.6" diagonal FHD anti-glare WLED-backlit (1920 x 1080) http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04529223 The 204 has 15.6" diagonal FHD WLED-backlit touch screen (1920 x 1080) http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04529254 I would save the old disks but make a new set from the new laptop as it has touch screen. REO

  • MSI 990FXA-GD80 v2 ... which bios?

My new build came in today with the board in subject line and an MSI GTX 660 Ti. Long story short it would not boot. The post display on motherboard would finally display "99" after a few moments but then would stop there and not continue to boot up. There is never a signal sent to the monitor. I tested my old MSI 7600gt and it booted up fine.
I then immediately started to RMA the video card. I decided to try the new 660 Ti video card in an older Asus M3A78-EM motherboard and it booted up on that computer just fine. I thought maybe it was a Bios problem. My board came with bios 11.12. According to the download pages, that bios version doesn't belong to this board. It is for non v2 boards of this model. The latest bios for my board is 11.9 and is dated 03/12. The non v2 version has this same bios (in name, not sure if same file) and same date.
Do they use the same bios? Should I update my v2 board to the latest bios available for the non v2 board which is 11.13 dated 10/12?
I'm not holding my breath that doing so would fix my "MSI video card incompatible with MSI motherboard" problem as it had the problem with the 11.12 bios and there is not mention of them fixing anything related to video. I also have a feeling that I will have the same problem if I RMA the video card for a replacement.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Other specs are:
    OpenSuse 12.2 64bit
    AMD FX-8350
    2x G Skill Ripjaw X 4GB
Corsair HX850 (Tested with other PSU from machine that actually booted with this card)

To the best of my knowledge the V2 simply came with the 11.9 BIOS when it was released and there's no other difference between the V2 & non V2. They use the same BIOS so you can update to the latest one shown at MSI for the non V2 MB.
See this topic re: that MB -  https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=159162.msg1167681

  • New computer and iPod Touch Purchased apps

So, i've been using for a while, my iPod Touch on my iMac, but now i can't access my iMac because i'm out of country and the iMac's display or motherboard isn't working (Double problem lol).I want to know how can i sync my iPod with my Netbook this time without loosing the apps of the iPod Touch, i bought several Apps without syncing with the Mac computer, i recently connected the iPod and saw the "Transfer Purchases" button, but i didn't press it since i want to make sure before i do that since i have over hundred dollars in apps on it.
So probably i will loose my iTunes Purchased music (maybe i can re-download it?), but i already saw some third-party programs to export the non-purchased ones so i
will firstly take all my music out of my iPod and the pics with that program.
Will the notes, calendar, Contact, mail accounts and other remain safe?
Will all the apps settings stay there (Like save games, accounts etc)
*I mainly want to do this to purchase the 3.0 Update once it's out in June 17 and upload songs in it.*
    *Thanks :)*

There's an option under "Info" in the iPod's syncing information where you can replace everything on the iPod with what's on the computer. Don't click that, and you should be fine.

  • Satellite C660 - Blank screen - No output - External monitor OK

I recently bought a C660 from ebay as a non-working repair project, listed as having no output to the LED screen but working ok on an external monitor.
After stripping it down, I found that the 40 pin connector to the LED panel had 3 damaged pins on the left side, so assuming that was the issue, I got another cable and rebuilt it. However, still no output to the LED panel, but all working fine on an external monitor.
As I have a spare new panel in stock, the next move was to replace the LED panel - still no output, except to the external monitor.
I have checked the setting for the video output (Fn+F5) and it is no different on any setting.
I have seen a couple of threads on here where people are having issues with no video output after a BIOS update (however I do not know if this has been done or not in this case).
Does anyone have any ideas as to what else I could check for to see what the problem might be?
    Any help greatly appreciated.

    >I have seen a couple of threads on here where people are having issues with no video output after a BIOS update (however I do not know if this has been done or not in this case).
If BIOS update fails, the unit would not power up and this results in black screen but this has nothing to do with your issue. The external monitor works properly so BIOS is OK.
Your issue is related to faulty internal display or the connection between the display and motherboard.
    Both should be checked!

  • Z77A-GD65 boot problem

    Hello,
the display on motherboard keep showing changing codes until i force shut down but nothing on the screen, i cleared the CMOS many times but no use.
also removed the RAM and the mobo showed error 55 correctly.
    this is for 1st bios
after that i switched to 2nd Bios and it worked and boot into windows CD but when i choose to repair my windows installation it said there's no valid windows installed, then it fails to boot again to CD and the motherboard only detect one hard drive... it gives AE error like nothing attached to it...
note: linux live USB work fine and i can browse my HDDs with no problem.
is my motherboard broken or there's solvable problem?

it started after i installed linux, there was a double windows boot problem so the GRUP boot loader didn't detect windows...
to solve it i deleted one boot file from windows HDD, and wanted to refix the boot using windows CD...then all of this started
and no i didn't try to flash bios at all, i was consider this as solution to what happened.
