Is it necessary to disable the internal DVD drive to connect an external DVD drive?

Isit necssary to disable an internal DVDdriver to use an external DVD driver?  I have permanently jammed a CD into an iMac (mid 2007) DVD / CD drive and purchased an external LG Mac compatable (at the apple reps advice), but the external is not recognized by my iMac.  therefore, does the internal drive have to be disabled, and if so, can it be disabled without taking the machine apart?
Thanks
Ed Lynch

Are you still running Leopard as indicated in your profile?
If so, up until Snow leopard (if I remember correctly) there was a patch needed for the OS to recognize an external - my LaCie burner came with it and once I installed it, it worked great. As mentioned though, it still wouldn't show up until you insert a disk. At this point, I doubt that such a patch would still be available as it hasn't been needed for some time.

  • How can i disable the internal speakers without voiding the warranty?

The students here annoy other students trying to study, I have made an extension for the headphone so that it is mounted under the monitor, facing the front and hot glued the headphone jack to the back, but the students ripped out the extension and threw it away so that they could play very awful music and annoy everyone.
How can I disable the internal speakers on our imacs without voiding warranty? There has to be a way!
    Thanks-

Have you considered corporal punishment? One instructor I had in high school, when he had detention duty, played classical music an operas all during detention. He was quite "evil". He would have some slow "sleepy" music going for a bit, then it would throw in something to wake every one up like the 1812 Overture or something, and repeat this a few times...and have the music loud enough to prevent talking. Many detention-ees thought that was "cruel and unusual punishment." (LOL)
But to your question. Since opening the case would normally void the warranty (unless you can find a empathetic Apple technician), what I would suggest is a "sleeve". Imagine some sheet metal and form it into a rectangular tube. The tube would closely follow the shape of the iMac covering all the cable ports. Then bolt the tube and iMac to the table. (Or at the very least, bolt the tube to the iMac.) Basically, make it so that there little room between the tube and iMac, that no one could access the ports without removing the tube. You'll also need to secure the cables to the tube so that no one can just pull out the cables, yet leave enough slack to allow for removal of the tube for maintenance. Even if the metal is not a full tube, but the Mac and metal is bolted to the table in such a way as to prevent access to the ports could be sufficient deterrent. If metal is not possible, then perhaps plastic or wood.
I realize that is requires some work, and there is a drawback as pranksters could start dropping stuff inside the tube. Perhaps just have a clear plastic "wall" preventing all physical access to the Mac. Only a USB extension cable for the keyboard/mouse. Use Remote Disk sharing to mount CDs, if necessary.
    Some thoughts, anyway. Good luck!

  • Can I disable the internal microphone

    Hi,
I have been trying to disable the internal microphone on my eMac (1.42GHz PowerPC G4) with no luck.
Okay to start at the beginning...we have a new application that uses headset with microphone. I have updated the Sys Pref to point to Line-in, but it does not pick up the external microphone.
I have updated the Utilities- Audio Midi Setup - Audio Devices - so that the Audio Input also says Line-In.
I cannot change the System Settings (Default Input/Default Output/System Output/Properties For) which currently say "Built-in Audio', because there is nothing else in the drop list selection.
It was suggested that I disable the internal microphone to force the Line-In to work, but I can't figure out where to do such a thing.
    Any suggestion? Please.
    Thanks much.
    Stella

Evidently the headset/microphone combo purchased is not compatible with my eMac. Interestingly using the LineIn add-on I was able to get some sound picked up by the eMac?????
It turns out the person who originally suggested disabling the internal mic to me had actually flipped her settings back to using the internal mic without knowing it and sent me on a wild goose chase. Thanks all to responders for all your knowledge

    Hi
how to download this and install?
There are no free DownLoads !
There are no legal DownLoads at all !
If there is no iDVD on Your Mac (and it's not on newer Macs as Apple discarded it) then You need a program that can do this.
Your Mac can burn CDs and DVDs - BUT DVD as Data-DVDs not as Video-DVDs - they need a program to be encoded and STRUCTURED as such.
    • iDVD is part of the boxed version of iLife'11 and can only be bought outside Apple as on Amazon and e-bay
    • DVD Studio pro - Part of FinalCut Studio Pro bundle - this to has expired and can only be bought second handed. (High price and tough learning Curve - but best ever done.)
    • Roxio Toast™ - Not as elegant as iDVD - but has many other positive additions (I like it as 10-Pro incl BD-component) (now version 11)
    • Burn - only free alternative I know of on internet. Very simple - Just for doing a plain Video-DVD
    Burn http://www.digital-digest.com/software/Burn.html
only You can buy from Apple is
    • FinalCut Pro-X which also can burn to DVD but without any nice themes.
    AppleMan1958
You can also buy Compressor from Apple for $50 US. It will also create DVD and BluRay but without the nice themes.

  • How do i connect an external DVD writer to my macair book ?

The wonderful present i received recently, namely my new Mac Air book has one major downfall, I love using I Movie to make movies, but how do i burn a DVD, i have purchased an external DVD writer, but I am pulling my hair out trying to get it to work, any ideas ???

Before buying any external DVD player/writer, you should make sure it is compatible with a Mac. If it is, it should be plug and go. If you are not willing to research, (like me), then just buy the $79.00 external Superdrive that Apple sells.
The difference between the least expensive usable unit an the Apple Superdrive is like $30.00. Not a big difference, IMO.

I move folders from my internal hard drive twice to an external hard drive.  Now I believe Lr does not know how to find my photos.  What can I do to get this cleared up.

Jim has a very good suggestion. There are many factors at work here:
    1) How are you connecting the external drive to the computer?
    2) How big are files (329 x 1MB is not the same as 329 x 25MB)?
    3) What is your computer specification?
    4) Do you have any power saving settings on (in particular something that would send the computer/hard drives to sleep)?

  • If I connect an external hard drive to the Time Capsule, all it automatically back it up?

If I connect an external hard drive to the Time Capsule, will it automatically back it up? Or do I need to somehow configure it in TIme Machine?

A HDD attached to the Time Capsule (TC) will not automatically back it up, nor can you configure Time Machine to do so. However, you can use the AirPort Utility to archive the contents of your TC's internal HDD to this attached drive.

No eSATA to USB. Just a SATA/IDE to USB adapter. Google SATA/IDE to USB adapter and you will get tons of links to buy them. Most likely your local computer electronics store has them, although they might be more expensive buying locally than online.
I have several. You can get either USB 2, which what I recommend, or USB 3. USB is backward compatible so a USB 3 adapter will work on a USB 2 port and a USB 2 adapter will work on a USB 3 port. Backward compatible in both directions.
I suggest a USB 2 type because there have been some problems with certain USB 3 devices, the USB 3 interface used isn't all that good in those certain devices. USB 3 is still fairly new where as USB 2 has been around for over 10 years.

As I said, I don't use Time Machine, so it'd be best to wait for an "expert" answer, but, with my very limited knowledge, I'd say: probably not - so, for now, I'd suggest you read up on Time Machine:
    http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Home.html
    http://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=search&src=support_site.home.search&local e=en_US&q=time%20machine
And, you might be attracting more knowledgeable answers if you were to post this question in the Time Machine Forum (part of the Snow Leopard forums).

Yes you can make multiple backups on one hard drive, for example if you’ve 1TB hard drive installed in your PC and you’ve two Mac Machines with 500GB drive each then you just make two backup images with size of 500GB each.

How do you move a single album, and not the whole library, in iPhoto to an external hard drive?

File -> Export to a folder and copy it over.
That will give you a folder with the images. There is no way to move an album outside of iPhoto. You would need to have a library containing it.

  • I cannot connect my external hard drives (1 WD My Passport and 1 LaCie Porsche Design). The drives were connected and worked perfect, the WD is used as a Time Capsule, the LaCie is formatted as exFAT and used for miscellaneous. They are both USB 3.0

I cannot connect my external hard drives any longer. I have one WD "My Passport" used as a Time Capsule and one LaCie Porsche Design used for all different kind of data, formatted in exFAT. They worked fine, connected direct or through an additional USB hub or also attached to a Dell monitor. The Lacie helds my iTunes Library and the iPhoto library.
After I moved the iTunes library to the external drive, from time to time the drive went into a never ending loop and I had to shut down the laptop (MacBook Air).
The last time starting again the drives were not recognized any longer. I tried to connect them to another MacBook, which didn't work.
Starting with Windows 7, the WD is also not recognized at all (perhaps because of time capsule format?) and the LaCie gives an error.
Could anybody tell me if there is a chance to get them alive again? When I connect them now, they start to heat up quite fast without anything else happening.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Just want to clarify, have you checked to make sure the cords are not damaged  (going from hard drive to computer and or any power source )?
You have also check to make sure that usb ports are working correctly?
If you have checked these things it may be that the external drives have failed.
I would google the error message from the LaCie drive before I do anything.
There are several ways that I know of,  one is to put the hard drive in the freezer for a while (make sure you wrap it air tight) if this works it is not a permenint fix. You might be able to transfer information to another source.
The other method is to plug the hard drive into a hard drive connector a product like this:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817707192
to do this you would have to remove the hard drive from its enclosure and still this is not a guarantee it will work.
The finally way I know is using a recovery service. This can be rather expensive, and  there are no guarantees

  • Can I increase the capacity of Time Machine with an external hard drive connected to Time Capsule?

Can I increase the capacity of Time Machine with an external hard drive connected to Time Capsule via the USB port?  My current Time Machine has a total capacity of 1TB.  I'd like to double or triple its memory.  I don't want to use the external hard drive in lieu of the Time Capsule hard drive.  I'd like to use it in addition to.  Just don't know if/how it's possible.
This is another one of those questions that I've searched the web for answers, and have gotten tricky answers back.  So now I'm trying to introduce a clean slate to the mix.
    Thank you for your time!

Well, what you mentioning is possible.  However, I don't know whether it's supported (as in, "easy to set up.").  Time Machine officially supports backing up to a locally attached drive, to a machine running a Time Machine server (i.e. running OS X Server software), and to a Time Capsule.  I don't know that it officially supports a drive attached to an AirPort or to a Time Capsule.  Though I know some people have gotten it to work.
Best I can say is to try it.  Plug the drive into the Time Capsule, ensure it's shared on the network, and then try and set it as a backup target from a machine in the Time Machine backup panel (you'll need to ensure it's mounted first).  If it works, you're all set.
