Is it necessary to do a backup before installing the new ios7 and then do a restore? We have 4th

I am not sure if I need to do a backup before installing the new upgrade of iOS7 and then do restore all files. I have heard of someone losing all their contacts! Any ideas please?

I would back up anything you don't want to lose. Chances are, you wont' lose a thing.....but backups are always nice to have.

  • Do I need to uninstall the old Firefox before installing the new version?

I really don't have any problems with Firefox, just trying to find out if it is necessary to uninstall Firefox 4, before installing the new version?

no, in fact, it's better to update it instead of installing the new one separately so that you don't loose your bookmarks and such.
To update, open firefox and go to Help and chose About Firefox. you should see an update button there.

    EMERGENCY!!!!!!!!
IS THERE ANY WAY TO RETREIVE AN ACCIDENTALLY DELETED BACK UP FROM MY TIME MACHINE DRIVE????
In other words, I emptied out a folder on my main MAC to make space and the next subsequent backup backed up the EMPTY FOLDER and then deleted the "old backup" that actually contained the contents of the very important folder.
Now only the emptied folder exists on my MAC and in the two backups on my Time machine backup drive.
This was clearly a big mistake on my part not realizing that the "old backup" being deleted by Time Machine would include backed up files that I had no intention of getting rid of....
    What can I do now?
Is DATA RETREIVAL even an option?
I am sure that the Folder of files that I need are on the most recently deleted "OLD BACKUP" but how do I get to this, if even possible?????
    Super desperate situation here...

It may be possible to recover some of the data, if it hasn't been overwritten, but it won't be cheap or easy.
You've posted in the Time Capsule forum, but you mention a "backup drive."  If your backups are on a Time Capsule's internal HD, instead of an external HD, it's even worse.
    See Data Recovery.
    Good luck.

  • I recently upgraded my old powerbook to an iMac.  I've dumped the files of my backup drive into the new iMac. Is there a way to have access to all the files (new and old computers) when logged on as the same user vs. logging in and out to access each?

I am new to posting to this support community but have often referred to it for answers.  So thank you all who've contributed; you've been a great help!

Sure-glad to help you. You will not lose any data by changing synching to MacBook Pro from imac. You have set up Time Machine, right? that's how you'd do your backup, so I was told, and how I do my backup on my mac.  You should be able to set a password for it. Save it.  Your stuff should be saved there. So if you want to make your MacBook Pro your primary computer,  I suppose,  back up your stuff with Time machine, turn off Time machine on the iMac, turn it on on the new MacBook Pro, select the hard drive in your Time Capsule, enter your password, and do a backup from there. It might work, and it might take a while, but it should go. As for clogging the hard drive, I can't say. Depends how much stuff you have, and the hard drive's capacity.  As for moving syncing from your iMac to your macbook pro, should be the same. Your phone uses iTunes to sync and so that data should be in the cloud. You can move your iTunes Library to your new Macbook pro
you should be able to sync your phone on your new MacBook Pro. Don't know if you can move the older backups yet-maybe try someone else, anyways,
This handy article from Apple explains how
How to move your iTunes library to a new computer - Apple Support''
don't forget to de-authorize your iMac if you don't want to play purchased stuff there
and re-authorize your new macBook Pro
time machine is an application, and should be found in the Applications folder. it is built in to OS X, so there is nothing else to buy. double click on it, get it going, choose the Hard drive in your Time capsule/Airport as your backup Time Machine  and go for it.  You should see a circle with an arrow on the top right hand of your screen (the Desktop), next to the bluetooth icon, and just after the wifi and eject key (looks sorta like a clock face). This will do automatic backups  of your stuff.

Mac OSX 10.6.8 running Photoshop CS5. My hard drive went belly up. Installed a new one and then tried to install Photoshop from my backup. I get an error message 6 telling me to uninstall Photoshop and then reinstall from the original software. But I bought from Adobe online. How do I go about this?

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

  • I have an academic version of Final Cut Studio on my laptop and recently purchased the most recent Full version of Final Cut Studio. Do I need to uninstall the academic version before installing the new version?

I have an academic version of Final Cut Studio on my laptop and recently purchased the most recent Full version of Final Cut Studio. Do I need to uninstall the academic version before installing the new version? I ask because this is not an upgrade, but a completely new version.

I'm with Jim on this.  It always seems to work out better if you do not install over another version.  You can use this app (freeware - thanks to Jon Chappel) to completely remove ALL Final Cut Studio apps and components: http://www.digitalrebellion.com/fcsremover/
Once that's done, install your newly purchased version.

The folder would be at the root of your hard drive. Double-click Macintosh HD and look there.
If it isn’t there, I’m not sure what it is seeing.

Let's try a standalone Apple Mobile Device Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of why it's not installing under normal conditions.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi (or AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi) to do a standalone AMDS install.
(If it offers you the choice to remove or repair, choose "Remove", and if the uninstall goes through successfully, see if you can reinstall by doubleclicking the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi again.)
Does it install (or uninstall and then reinstall) properly for you? If so, can you get a normal iTunes install to go through properly now?
If instead you get an error message during the install (or uninstall), let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)

  • HT1766 Good evening. I backed up my iphone5 today at 17:12 using iCloud before downloading the new software. I have now lost all my pictures/messages from May as the backup hasn't worked!! Can I do anything?

I backed up my iphone5 using iCloud before downloading the new ISO software. I have now lost all my pictures and messages as the backup doesn't seem to have worked even though it says last backed up today 17:12. Is there anything I can do?

Backing up doesn't change or delete anything on the phone. I am guessing you restored your phone using iCloud.
If you did not have a backup of it made before you did 'whatever it was you did', then the information is gone.

  • WARNING!!! Backup before installing Leopard

I've had 2 of my 3 Macs crash will installing Leopard corrupting the hard drive. I had to reformat both and lost all of the data.
During the install, I got an error message that Leopard was unable to complete the installation but I was unable to restart the computer. I worded with Apple tech support during the first failure which required reformatting the hard drive. The 2nd computer installed normally but the 3rd crashed also.
Word to the wise, back up everything before doing the Leopard install.
    FYI: I LOVE Leopard

To Apple's credit, they do warn people to do a complete backup before installing Leopard as well as all OS updates. For what its worth, I installed Leopard on three Macs and all three worked fine.

  • I dont have an external hard drive. How do I back up my computer before installing the Snow Leopard?

I am upgrading my computer from leopard to snow leopard. Is it necessary that I back up? I'm afraid I will lose all my data. I dont have an external hard drive. Is there another way to backup? I dont even know how to use Time Machine...
    AGH!! PLEASE HELP!

Go out and buy one. You should have a backup.
To upgrade you don't need a backup, but if the upgrade goes awry then what? You've got nothing but a ocmputer that doesn't work. Now you must erase the drive and restore everything from scratch. And, all your data are gone. Is that all worth the risk?
If you choose not to make a backup then at least do this before installing Snow Leopard:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Now, boot from the Snow Leopard DVD and install it.

When I use find file http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/30073/find-file (which does tend to find files that "Finder" can't), it's not coming up with any other itunes library files that have been modified in the past week, which I know it would have been - unfortunately, I don't have a very recent backup of the hard drive.  It would be a few months old so it wouldn't have the complete library on it....any ideas?  I'm wondering if restarting the computer might help but have been afraid to do so in case it would make it harder to recover anything...I was looking at this thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4211589?start=0&tstart=0 in the hopes that it might have a helpful suggestion but it's definitely a different scenario.
