Is it necessary to have Drive Genius?

I already have the Tech Tool Deluxe that came with Applecare & I also use the Apple Hardware test via the Applications Disc. Would I get anything more from using Drive Genius to test my Macbook? Just curious, don't know if I should spend $100 when I already have some tools at my disposal.

  • Help With Drive Genius 3

Ok I Have Drive Genius 3 Drive Pulse always Enabled & it say's Physlcal Drive Check: An Issue was Dectected With This Volume, Please Check The Event Viewer for more information so I Did that & it say's Macintosh HD Critical in Red, Macintosh HD Contains 1 Bad Block. The Drive should be Backed Up and ereased (using zeros) as soon as possible. ? does this mean I Have to Erase my whole entire Hard Drive? I Hate doing that what should i do?

Okay, I have Drive Genius and I've heard that the Drive Pulse can show incorrect information, so, what's better is the following (you're on 10.7 - Lion - right?)
I want you to run Disk Utility verify disk, but, if you're on Lion, you will need to run the hidden included recovery assistant and use the Disk Utility on it.
So, try this: hit restart and hold Command + R keys and follow these steps:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
Once you're in the recovery partition, choose Disk Utility and repair your hard drive. If it comes back without any problems you're fine. If there are errors, but it can repair it, you're fine. If there are errors that can't be repaird, then simply reinstall your system from within the recovery assistant - it will automatically download your system again. Make sure you have a current backup before starting all of this just in case.

  • Drive Genius says I have 23 bad blocks- shall I zero or replace?

Does 23 bad blocks mean imminent disaster or can I erase with zeros and begin again? Drive is less than a year old

Ignore Drive Genius for now. Do the following:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

Let's hope a couple things: that you have bootable clones of your drives also; that the backup drive for TimeMachine has over 3x capacity of the data you plan and are storing. I would also switch TM backup drives so you have a 2nd.
Fragmented free space affecting performance happens when the drive is too full which may mean there isn't enough free space for a full backup set.
1.5TB for backing up 500GB, while WD Green 3TB is $140 and WD Black 1.5TB is, about the same price.
I'd be worried about the integrity and directory, and whether you can afford to lose that drive. Defragging is also a very slow operation. the ideal: to just clone a drive, or start over with another drive and wait. cloning TM volumes has not been done or has it? SuperDuper hoped to but I don't think they or Bombich's CCC made it there.
Trouble with highly fragged is when free space gets to 20% normally, 1/3 or so though for TM volumes, and finding where and a chunk of space for the file being written. Does TM use large spare image files of like 2GB?
Best would be to ask in the TimeMachine section Snow Leopard

  • BEWARE: Drive Genius 2.0.2 ate a partition. 2.0.2 is beta at best.

Before you hassle me about making backups, don't bother. A disk utility like Drive Genius should require backups for when unforeseeable occurrences (power losses, disconnection, etc.) happen. When the application crashes itself- there are more issues than just the data loss : stress of time loss to find a repair scenario that works or (if you have one) restoring a backup after repairing the drive (non-productivity, messed up workflow which for a designer is just the worst because you completely lose your place in pipeline), financial loss for a worthless application you will never trust again, general bad day feeling.
DO NOT DEFRAG!!!! I will never touch this software or anything from ProSoft again. I don't trust them and I think this 2.0.2 update is a horrendous step backwards from what was once a decent application for directory repair.
I can't believe in all my experience I made the mistake of purchasing/trusting Drive Genius 2.0.2 with my MBP.
Defrag is EXTREMELY dangerous. On a perfectly clean running MBP 10.5.2 with TechTool Pro reporting everything to be perfect I decided, hey, why not give a defrag a try- prosoft must have be legitimate in including this feature? NO!
No processes running at all other than drive genius and system processes Drive Genius crashed at 59%. The crash corrupted the directory structure to the point that Disk Utility cannot mount the drive or repair citing "B-Tree" problems. Disk Warrior cannot rebuild and cannot see the drive otherwise. Thank God this was an external drive but I still have lost 460GB of data and to say I'm furious is an understatement. These files are my personal data (graphics, renderings, movies, etc, etc). As many people know who work in design, working from a MBP is tricky without large external drives. Backing up several of these is **** and often neglected. Maybe this will teach me a lesson though ...
I can understand Drive Genius 2.0.2 saying that power failure can cause data loss in the warning before you defrag, but, when Drive Genius itself is crashing and destroying a partition I just can't forgive. This application is a POS. If Apple is really using this at the Genius Bar I'm going to think twice about ProCare in the future.
A disk utility application that crashes itself (log shows this) is frightening. What was intended to optimize a computer has now cost me several hours without any avail. I am about to throw in the towel and accept responsibility in being stupid enough to run software like this.
Maybe ProSoft should have considered spending more time on the application than the lame 3D interface which just escapes me as having a purpose or benefit in a disk utility. It just seems against logic to have 3d Graphics running during any disk process. I don't want it. I want a graph of the progress ... IF ANYTHING.
I highly advise discretion in using this application. Save yourself the money and stress. This release is worhtless.

I fully concur with this post. Drive Genius is a piece of expensive "crap." No, I did not back up my drive because I did not know how and couldn't find a "simple" solution at the time, until I found Superduper nearly a year later. DG "defrag" app wiped out my pictures and I have NEVER been able to recover them even tho' I have kept the drive available until a good recovery app comes along. DG documentation is as useless as their 'support.' I bought the app from OWC and haven't been back since. Once burned, I NEVER go back. That's my way of a protest!
The lesson in this, for me, is to NEVER defrag your drive on OS X, no matter what the documentation says. It shouldn't even be offered as an option.
Currently, I'm having trouble with Disk Utility resizing a partition. The documentation simply doesn't tell how to do it to make it work successfully. This feature is one reason I bought Leopard. Now it doesn't work for me. The one good thing is that it didn't erase the data on my primary drive, but the the partition I wanted to resize is now lost to me. In my view, this feature is also "beta." Why does ANY software developer design an app without thoroughly testing it? That's just like starting a preemptive war without checking out the consequences. Bummer!!!

  • How to completely uninstall Drive Genius, OS-X 10.6.8

    Mac Pro running OS-X 10.6.8.
In February 2012 I purchased Drive Genius 3.1.1 from Other World Computing. Tried it. Not much use to me, so I forgot about it.
In September 2014 I "upgraded" to Drive Genius v.3.2.5 but it would not run on my machine, so I forgot about it.
At some later time I realized that the computer was not going to sleep despite the System Preference setting. I could put it to sleep manually.
I inquired on the net why this was happening and serendipitously found complaints about Drive Genius being very difficult to un-install.
I looked at the Console logs and saw this pattern, repeated every 10 seconds:
    Jan  2 10:18:09 MacPro com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[124] (com.prosofteng.DGMonitor[898]): posix_spawn("/Library/Application Support/DriveGenius/DGAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/DGAgent", ...): No such file or directory
    Jan  2 10:18:09 MacPro com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[124] (com.prosofteng.DGMonitor[898]): Exited with exit code: 1
Jan  2 10:18:09 MacPro com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[124] (com.prosofteng.DGMonitor): Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds
    Jan  2 10:18:19 MacPro com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[124] (com.prosofteng.DGMonitor[917]): posix_spawn("/Library/Application Support/DriveGenius/DGAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/DGAgent", ...): No such file or directory
    Jan  2 10:18:19 MacPro com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[124] (com.prosofteng.DGMonitor[917]): Exited with exit code: 1
Jan  2 10:18:19 MacPro com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[124] (com.prosofteng.DGMonitor): Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds
etc. etc. apparently willing to go on forever.
I tried removing every trace of Drive Genius including in:
    /Library/Application Support/DriveGenius (folder)
    /Applications/Drive Genius 3.app (icon)
    /Users/Library/Application Support/DriveGenius (folder)
    /Users/Library/Preferences/com.prosofteng.DriveGenius2.plist (file)
    /Users/Library/Preferences/com.prosofteng.DGAgent.plist (file)
    ~/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.prosofteng.DriveGenius.locum
    ~/Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/com.prosofteng.DriveGenius.locum
I even downloaded and installed the OSX 10.6.8 Combo Updater.
But, the every-ten-seconds" events are still happening.
How can I get rid of this thing -- whether or not it is the cause of the failure to go to sleep?

After a lot more work, the "repeated-every-10-seconds" messages seem to be gone now.
To review, I already deleted these folders and files:
         /Library/Application Support/DriveGenius
         /Applications/Drive Genius 3.app
         /Users/Library/Application Support/DriveGenius
         /Users/Library/Preferences/com.prosofteng.DriveGenius2.plist
         /Users/Library/Preferences/com.prosofteng.DGAgent.plist
I found this file and tried to remove it:
         /Users/jimp/Library/LaunchAgents/com.prosofteng.DGMonitor.plist
Dragging the file to the trash did not work. Trying to remove the file via the Terminal "rm" command did not work. Even doing
"sudo rm com.prosofteng.DGMonitor.plist" would not work, resulting in the message:
"rm: com.prosofteng.DGMonitor.plist: Operation not permitted" and the file was still there.
I used COMMAND-I to change the file permission to READ AND WRITE and then used the VI editor in Terminal to "comment out" every line of the file by adding a "#" at the start of each line. Then I wrote out the file.
I still could not remove the file---I don't know why--- but I suppose it is now inert and can't do anything.
Upon restarting, the Console log no longer shows those "every-10-seconds" errors.
I assume my problem is solved?
I have yet to determine whether the Mac Pro will go to sleep as it used to do.
Now I need to remember to NEVER TRY INSTALLING DRIVE GENIUS or other dangerous applications again.
I hope these notes are of some value to other Mac 10.6.8 users out there.

  • Drive Genius 3 LE - how to defrag?

    Hey all,
I recently bought Drive Genius 3 LE from the App Store.
Using a MBP 15".  It won't let me defrag the HD. There's a big red exclamation point that says "Can not defrag this drive".  I was thinking of booting the computer from my USB HDD which has Mac OSX on it, then defragging my internal HDD with Drive Genius, but I don't know how to make OS X boot with the USB HDD?
Anyone have any ideas for me?
    Thanks, in advance!

Hold down the option key at Boot up and it should show you all valid Bootable Volumes, or use System Preferences/Startup Disc to set the external.

  • MacBook Pro and Drive genius 2

I'e got a late 2009 17" MacBook Pro. When I try to boot from the Drive Genius DVD the computer just reset it self. When I restart the computer and press the C key it sounds if the computer is reading the disc. The screen goes black and the computer reboots, as you can hear the boot up sound. My Mac Pro boots fine from the disk so do not think it s problem with disc. My note book boots up fine from the disc containing the Hardware test when I hold in the D key. When I restart the computer with my Snow Leopard disc and I hold down the C key it boots fine from the disc. So do not thenk it is a problem with the notebook or dvd drive either.
    Any ideas
    Thanks
    Freddie

Yes Freddie. You will need a copy of Drive Genius 2 on a disc with a later OS installed, or you can install Drive Genius itself on a bootable external drive (with an OS recent enough to use with your Mac - 10.5.7 or later).
Prosoft provide the ability to create an updated boot disc for use with later computers, but the necessary download costs you $5. See http://www.prosofteng.com/products/drivegeniusupdate.php
If you haven't already, and are running it from an external drive, you should also update your copy of Drive Genius 2 to the current version (2.3), also available from the ProSoft download site linked to above. The earliest version that is compatible with Snow Leopard is 2.2.1.
    Cheers

  • Drive Genius shows a streak of stupidity and screws up my hard drive

I tried defragging my hard drive (so I could install something in Boot Camp) with Drive Genius (from a 10.5 partition on my external drive), and suddenly it stops. I try again, not noting the error message, and I get:
FATALDISKERROR: Overlapped extents found (extent 2 overlaps extent 1 by 1189 blocks)
I have no idea what to make of this, and so I try everything in the repair section of the app. Repair and Rebuild only show:
    Repairing volume...
    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
Incorrect block count for file iNode386845
(It should be 2 instead of 1)
Incorrect block count for file iNode386846
(It should be 1 instead of 3)
Incorrect block count for file iNode386850
(It should be 1 instead of 14)
    Invalid extent entry
    Invalid node structure
    Volume check failed.
Checking for errors in the extents map...
    Rebuild Failed.
I'm currently cloning my MacBook's internal drive to an image. Hopefully someone knows how to fix this mess.

Eh, crap. Forgot to close this thread.
Anyway, I was bored enough to outline this problem:
-Tried using Drive Genius to defrag internal drive, but it failed horribly somehow and caused many problems that started this horrible mess
-Used a Maintenance partition on external drive full of utilities and crap during this "incident"
-Disk Warrior fixed that, but moved files from their original spots to /Recovered Files, most of them are Xerox printer things located in /Library/Printers/Xerox; both those are deleted (Secure Empty Trash), will have to reinstall those
-AppCleaner complains about there not being a "/Library/Application Support/AppCleaner/AppCleaner Daemon" and doesn't let MB start up, making the directory and chmod 777-ing it, didn't do anything
-Backed up by CCC after all the above happened and before the reinstall and Drive Genius before all the above happened
-Tried reinstalling via upgrade method, didn't work so restored from backup
    -Tried Archive and Install, worked!
Now I've traded Macs with my brother and also upgraded the RAM on both. C'est nice!

  • Is drive genius 3 compatible with mountain lion

My mac keeps freezing and I would like to use drive genius 3. Is it compatible with Mountain Lion 10.8.2

The next time you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Select any messages timestamped from then until the end of the episode. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Can't turn off Verbose Mode after running disk defrag in minimal environment using Drive Genius 3

New to posting on here. I'm using a
    Mid-2009 15in MacBook Pro
2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4 GB memory
After running Disk Defrag in a minimal environment using Drive Genius 3 my MacBook Pro only starts up in Verbose Mode.
I've done my searching on how to turn verbose mode on and off on the web and it gets me nowhere.
    Using
         sudo nvram –p
in terminal shows that there is no " v" after " boot-args "
    Using
         sudo nvram boot-args=
to turn it off hasn't done anything.

I'm having the same issue but the solution suggested by prosoft doesn't work because that file des not exist.
Prosoft was able to help me.
First, FileVault is not reccomended and they are adding a FAQ to address that.  Next, they said to trash this file:
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist
and to restart.  It seemed to have worked for me.
If anyone has any other suggestions then I would be grateful.
    Many Thanks.

  • Drive Genius 2

On my Mac with OSX Tiger, which one if these is safe to run on my iPods?
    -Drive Genius 2
    -TechTool Pro 4
    -Disk Warrior 4
-Disk Utility ( OSX Tiger )
    Thanks
    - Bill

An iPod is just a hard drive from the perspective of these tools. I would say they are all safe to use.
Having said that, I own TechTool Pro and Disk Warrior (and obviously Disk Utility), and the only one I have used on an iPod is Disk Utility. The reason is because if there is a drive-related problem with the iPod, I don't bother using Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro to fix the problem. All of the files on my iPod's drive are already in iTunes, so I don't need to repair, save, or recover anything. In the worse case scenario, you reformat the iPod using Disk Utility, Restore in iTunes, and re-sync your media files in iTunes. Hopefully, everything works again and the drive is not failing.

  • Drive Genius 2 and utilities folder

    Hi there
    1) I am hopping some one called help me with Drive Genius 2. I want to initialize the disk. But the problem is that there are two options one is “Apple Partition Map” the other is “GUID Partition Table”. Don’t know which one to choose, what do they mean? I am using a three year old iMac and want to reformat an external USB drive.
    2) Something else I would like to know about the utilities folder in the app folder on the Mac. All of the utilities that came with the Mac are missing. Don’t know where they have gone but “About this Mac “ and the more info button is greyed out and cant be pressed. The info I think was in utilities folder which is now missing. How do I get the utilities back, can I get it from the Mac OS X disc that came with the computer? Don’t want to install the how system, is there anyway I can just get utilities from the disc?
    Thanks for any help

    Thanks for the info
I have Pacifist and I thought it had worked but on the Disk utility, system profiler, and terminal are crossed out and when clicked on it says "You can't open the application "System Profiler" because it is not supported on this architecture". What does this mean and can I get it working again?
    Thanks for your help

  • Drive Genius cd will not boot on my pismo

    Greetings everyone,
I'm trying to boot Drive Genius 1.5.3 cd on my pismo which has 10.4.11 and I can't get it to boot from the CD. I load it, restart and hold down the "C" key, but it doesn't boot. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thank You.
    Marco

Great news Marco, thanks for the Stars.
You might not of heard of this great fixer upper, so I'll mention it here...
Might give a try with Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
As long as you don't have a USB connection in tandem with a UPS, which can cause problems.
