Is it necessary to keep older versions of Adobe Apps (photoshop, dreamweaver, etc.) after installing newest versions?

Keeping older versions seems to just take up hard drive space.  Any reason to keep older installed versions of any adobe programs?

No technical reason. It's up to you.
Some people keep older versions because some features have been removed in newer versions.
e.g. the Oil Paint filter has been removed in Photoshop CC 2014 which upset some people

  • Keeping older versions of Design Standard

This question is for professionals who've been using previous versions of Design Suites of any kind. I currently have a Student License version of Design Standard CS5. I've purchased hard copy versions of the same edition since CS3, and still have both previous versions on my MacBook Pro. The old versions are taking up quite a bit of space on my hard drive.
I'm wondering if I need to keep these older versions for any reason, or if I can put them on my external hard drive for the moment. I'm wondering, more than anything, if a client gives me files from older versions if they're backwards compatible in CS5, or if I'll need the older versions in order to be able to properly open and use them?
    I would appreciate any feedback.
    Thanks!

This would be a great question in the InDesign forum.
InDesign limits you to backsaving only one version at a time with the INX format. So you may want to keep older versions installed if you have to convert a CS5 document to CS3 via CS4 (caution, backsaving might muddle newer features). You might also work with a client that requires a document to be created in CS3 to match their own CS3 installation.
Adobe apps are not easily installed on external drives.
To save space, you can uninstall unnecessary components of the older Creative Suites (Illustrator, Photoshop) while still leaving InDesign. Run the installer to do this.

  • Is it necessary to keep Lightroom 3 on my computer when I have just installed Lightroom 4 ?

Is it necessary to keep Lightroom 3 on my computer when I have just installed Lightroom 4, or do they use some of the same files ??

Yes, I consider this advisable, too - for the moment.
There may be still bugs in for which the ability to revert to LR3 can be very helpful. E.g. if tone curves are lost: the best intermediate solution could be to open LR3 and save the settings to xmp, then close LR3, open LR4 and read metadata from file.
I might uninstall LR3 probably when LR4.2 might be out...

  • Keeping older versions of illustrato

Once I download CS6, do I need to keep the older version on my computer or can I delete it?

you can deactivate (help>deactivate) and then uninstall.
you don't need an upgraded version installed in order to install the upgrade.  you just need the serial numbers for both if the previous is not installed.

  • Any reason to keep older version of iLife?

I notice that my old iMovie projects open in the older version of iMovie. Should I keep the older version installed on my laptop? I was kind of wanting to free up some memory.
    Thanks!
    Trey

More of a question for the iMovie forum, don't you think?
However, it's entirely up to you. iMovie 6 and iMovie 7 are two completely different applications, with completely different capabilities and different interfaces. Your old iMovie projects can be opened and converted with iMovie 7, but with major changes. All transitions will be replaced with a simple crossfade. All movie effects will be lost. This would not be ideal for a project that is incomplete and/or you are still planning to use in an iDVD project.
The system specs at the bottom of your post aren't compatible with iMovie 7 - it won't install on a G4 at all. Are those specs correct? Do you have iMovie 7 on your laptop?
If it were me, I would absolutely keep iMovie 6. Only you can decide what works for your purposes.
    Regards.

  • Keep older versions of CS on external drive?

I've seen some discussion on this but I still want to ask.
I have CS3 and CS5 activated on my internal drive. I am about to install CS6.
I am nervous about uninstalling the older versions because I need backward compatibility when clients send me docs made from their older versions of CS; also when I need to send something back to them that they can read.
Best case, seems to me: move activated older versions to an external drive where they can sit quietly and out of the way in case I need them.
Can I do that? Is there a best practice for making it work?

installing adobe apps on non-main drives can be done but often is problematic.  unless you're running out of space on your main drive, you should leave older versions in place.
there's no problem with previous versions working well with current adobe app versions.  i have flash pro cs3,4,5,5.5,6,cc and the next beta all working without problem.

  • ITunes will not start after installing newest version

After installing the newest version of iTunes, I click on the iTunes icon and the license agreement flashes on the screen and disappears before I can click on the agreement. I am running Windows 2000 professional edition. Quick time will also not start. I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times, with and without firewall software running. Nothing seems to help.

    hi Rachel!
No error messages, nothing. The hourglass is next to the mouse for about 3 seconds.
okay, if it's not NIS 2005 related, let's first check up on this:

... but by the sound of it, you might need to check on this:

if it turns out to be a weird start-up item to blame, would you mind letting us know what it's called? (there's a hint that there's a new kind of malware out there causing "the flash" and possibly some other start-up problems.)
    keep us posted.

  • I don't want 4.0 help me keep older version from crashing

If I upgrade to 4.0 my roboform-program is going to charge me 29.00 to update. Which I am not going to do. I want to keep firefox 3.6 but it is crashing all the time. No particular site, just randomly.

  • Should I remove older version s of firefox when newer versions have been uploaded

I am not aware of a problem , I am simply trying to understand the revisions and whether I need to keep older versions in order to run the newer firefox

It's not necessary to uninstall anything especially since you aren't using a 4beta version. And there are some serious risks to losing important data that you store if you don't remove older versions very carefully.
If you decide that you don't like 4.0 you can easily go backwards & reinstall 3.6 without any problems (and without risk of losing data).
One point though: if you are a bookmark fiend like me, it's a really good idea to back up your bookmarks before you make''' any''' changes to firefox. I'm so obsessive that I back them up constantly (and I don't rely on FF's automatic bookmark-backup process), but that's just me being paranoid from learning the very hard way a long time ago.

  • Why can't I download an older version of Pages from the App Store?

Is there any way to download an older version of Pages? Specifically, version 4.2?
Upgrading my OS from 10.6.8 is not an option, and I live overseas in a place where I'm completely unable to recieve disks for older iWorks through the mail. This is frustrating... the App should either be compatible or alternatively should keep older versions available, if not on the app store then on the website somewhere. I'm willing to pay Apple for an older version, but have yet to figure out how that's even an option.
Would love to know if there's a way to get Pages 4.2 that I've missed. Thanks

    Google "Apple iWork '09 Installer".
Apple seems to have pulled the plug on the manual updaters so you may have to Google those as well.

  • Can't download songs because itunes wants older versions of it 7.4 and 7.2

Okay here's my issue. I want to buy a new song from iTunes and most songs come up with this error. It says I need to download 7.2 or 7.4 versions of i Tunes, but I already have 7.5!! Plus everytime I open up iTunes it says I need to update to 7.5 even though I already have it. I thought iTunes must be running off of older versions of itself so I deleted all the old itunes set-ups exceot for the 7.5 versions. But I still keep getting all this updating problems still. Did I do something wrong and accidently erased 7.2 and 7.4 versions I still needed? If so, how do I re-download them??

    hi,
I don't know exactly how to solve your issue. But iTunes really doesn't need any older versions to run in order to work properly. Therefore, you haven't done anything wrong by not keeping older versions. But when you download an iTunes update, you do not need to uninstall manually previous version. You should simple let the iTunes updater do its work.
It appears to me that somehow your system is beleiving that you still have a version older tan 7.2 despite the fact to you have 7.5 installed. This is why it is asking you to update. It may be related to your manual removal of your previous version.
Have you simply try to reinstall 7.5?

  • How can I install multiple versions of Firfox, and block the older versions from updating while allowing one version to continue updating?

I need to have several versions of FF installed for training and testing purposes, but I can't keep older versions from updating. All versions will auto-update regardless of setting auto-update to off or suggest.

hello miklewis, you can try to use portable versions of older versions of the browser & set them to not update (those are not provided by mozilla directly): http://sourceforge.net/projects/portableapps/files/Mozilla%20Firefox%2C%20Portable%20Ed./

  • Is it ok to erase the older version of iMovie when you have updated it?

Is it ok to remove the older versions of a program that have been updated, ie Imovie?? What is the best way to do this...?

Yes, keep the Older iMovie11..or what ever older version you have...you will soon want to go back to it I am sure.
I like to know whihch HDD I am importing moview to..That does nto seem possible in new iMovie 10..where as in the older iMovie11 you could choose.
Yes, I know the new one is Version 10...where as the old iMovie11 was version 9...but well done Apple for an inspired naming scheme...not confusing at all.......bloody Muppets..someone needs a big slap .
Some versions are better for some stuff than others.  I wish I had known you coudl keep older versions.

  • Older versions of Illustrator CS

I have recently updated from CS5.5 to CS6.  The last full version I had downloaded was CS3. Do I need to keep it on my computer, or can I uninstall it?

    Mag,
Every time you upgrade, you have a new full version.
You may unistall any older version than the highest one, but you should be aware that you are likely to make a mess of the higher version(s) if you reinstall a lower version.
From time to time, we see reports in this forum about the convenience of keeping older versions for specific uses. Some of the latest ones have been about features that worked better in the older version(s).
So you may think twice (or thrice).
