What is causing random shut downs on new iMac?
I have a new iMac which is shutting down without any warning! Anyone know if this is a known issue? Is it software or hardware?
Hi FPMS
That sounds like partially seated or a dislodged ram module! I would first check to see if they are both seated correctly, you'll need to push real hard on each module with both thumb's. Use the iMac Installing or replacing memory link below to assist you if someone else installed them for you.

Should i shut down my macbook air each night
how often should i shut down my macbook air?
if youre not using it for a few hours
leaving your macbook both ON charge AND in sleep mode is bad on the battery
merely in sleep is another matter, which is fine.
Considerations for the long life of your MacBook. Handling and environmental care tips
General consideration of your MacBook battery
Contrary to popular myths about notebook batteries, there is protection circuitry in your Macbook and therefore you cannot ‘overcharge’ your notebook when plugged in and already fully charged.
However if you do not plan on using your notebook for several hours, turn it off (plugged in or otherwise), since you do not want your Macbook ‘both always plugged in and in sleep mode’.
A lot of battery experts call the use of Lithium-Ion cells the "80% Rule", meaning use 80% of the full charge or so, then recharge them for longer overall life. The only quantified damage done in the use of Lithium Ion batteries are instances where the internal notebook battery is “often drained very low”, this is bad general use of your notebook battery.
A person who has, for example, 300 charge cycles on their battery and is recharging at say 40% remaining of a 100% charge has a better battery condition state than, say, another person who has 300 charge cycles on their battery and is recharging at say 10-15% remaining on a 100% charge. DoD (depth of discharge) is much more important on the wear and tear on your Macbook’s battery than the count of charge cycles. There is no set “mile” or wear from a charge cycle in specific. Frequent high depth of discharge rates (draining the battery very low) on a Lithium battery will hasten the lowering of maximum battery capacity.
All batteries in any device are a consumable meant to be replaced eventually after much time, even under perfect use conditions.
If the massive amount of data that exists on lithium batteries were to be condensed into a simplex, helpful, and memorable bit of information it would be:
1. While realistically a bit impractical during normal everyday use, a lithium battery's longevity and its chemistry's health is most happy swinging back and forth between 20% and 85% charge roughly.
2. Do not purposefully drain your battery very low (10% and less), and do not keep them charged often or always high (100%).
3. Lithium batteries do not like the following:
A: Deep discharges, as meaning roughly 10% or less on a frequent basis.
B: Rapid discharges as referring to energy intensive gaming on battery on a frequent basis (in which case while gaming, if possible, do same on power rather than battery). This is a minor consideration.
C: Constant inflation, as meaning always or most often on charge, and certainly not both in sleep mode and on charge always or often.

You shouldn't disable Spotlight completely; Apple's App Store relies on it to keep track of updates to software you've downloaded and permit you to update them when they're available. Instead, in Spotlight preferences, uncheck everything in "Search Results." Spotlight will still run for OS and App Store purposes but won't be useful for your search needs any longer. Instead, check out EasyFind in the App Store. It's fast, flexible, and will search external drives Spotlight hasn't indexed. -
I shut Down my IPad 2 every night, so that has not fixed the problem with the touch screen feature. Is their anything else that I can try? Thanks
You have already posted this morning and I assume that you are responding to someone elses's suggestion but from where .... I have no clue.
Go back to here and follow along. GrumpyGator made a couple of suggestions for you to try.

.Mac Auto Syncing of iDisk hindering Restarts/Shut Downs on new Intel iMac?
I have been experiencing a Restart/Shut Down reliability issue with my new iMac and Leopard 10.5.1. This evening an Apple rep I know pointed me to a work-around in Apple Discussions:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5957261
This thread notes the discovery by one user that iDisk automatic syncing is not working reliably, and is preventing consistent restarting/shutting down of your Mac. Although, syncing has been working reliably for me both for .Mac stuff, and the iDisk itself, if you do a Get Info on your iDisk it reports, at least for me, that its capacity is 1TB, with 466GB available. I have only the standard 10GB .Mac account, and only 5GB of that is allocated to my iDisk, so something is clearly amiss with the .Mac iDisk setup (iDisk Get Info reports correctly on my G5 Macs w/Leopard), as being reported from the .Mac server. If you check your Console logs, you may also see this recurring error message, which is reporting a syncing error, although my syncs have, as I've said, been working correctly:
11/25/07 9:11 PM FileSyncAgent192 MKCOL /.FileSync (FAILED), httpStatusCode:405, errorType:100, transactionState:5, txnId:3846B904-9ABB-40E5-9928-B9233FAC05D2, auto-retries=0, manual-retries=0
To summarize, if you turn off your iDisk in your System Preferences/.Mac/iDisk preference pane, you'll have no problems restarting/shutting down. You may also need to do the power management reset (turn off Mac, unplug all devices and power for 15 seconds, reconnect, and start up) and the parameter RAM reset (reboot while holding down the cmd-opt-P-R keys). You can do this in one restart cycle, if you like. After that, restarts/shutting down has worked perfectly for me.
Of course, I actually USE my iDisk, and will be leaving it on. But, at least I know now how to work around the restart/shut down issue. (Note: this morning my iMac had locked up, after the iDisk mounted/unmounted repeatedly during the evening, so I rebooted and switched iDisk syncing to manual. More to follow...)
I hope Apple adds this fix to their 10.5.2 update next month.
Note: This is such an important issue, that in addition to adding it to a reply in another Shut Down thread, I thought I'd post it as a separate topic here.MacOS X updates have resolved this issue.

Slow startup & shut down on new iPod Touch 4G but it takes 40 seconds to start!!
Hello,
Just bought a new iPod Touch 4G (32GB) two weeks ago and from day 1 it takes forever to start up! Usually about 40 seconds to start up and 30 seconds to shut down. My son's 8GB starts up right away. I've been a longtime Apple customer, but bugs like this are annoying. Is this a reflection of that $150 million that Microsoft invested in Apple years ago?I would get Applejack 1.5; just do a google for it. In stall it.
Restart holding down the Command(Apple) + s key; until you see white lettering on black background.
When you get to a prompt type the following: "applejack auto" no quotes; hit return and let it do its thing. If that doesn't fix it I would restart again Holding down the keys mentioned and type the following applejack AUTO and hit return.
Best free application I have ever used. First thing use when trouble shooting.
It will wipe out your desktop picture pref. only thing I have ever found that it does. -
Is it necessary to shut down computer every night or ever?
Certain members of our family shut the computer down when they are done using it. I have heard this is not necessary to do; daily or ever?
iMac Intel Core Duo Mac OS X (10.4.6)I've used Macs since they came out, and had one at home soon after (a Mac 512K enhanced). I've never shut down my Mac at night. I've never had any problems where I had to take the Mac in for repairs. Even now, I leave my Mac in the office in sleep mode, and anything I bring home in sleep mode. That's it. Over the years people have sought to scare me one way or another by telling me that the insides of my Macs were going to melt, that the heat would kill the drive, etc. Well, none of that ever happened. Sure, there were times when I shut my Mac down -- when I traveled for some extended period, when I was taking it somewhere else, and so forth, but certainly not everyday and not for long periods of time. Leaving it on is fine.
Now, software... a whole other matter.
Good luck.
--Waiting for a 24" iMac 2.16GHz, w/2GB, 500GB, and the 7600 GT w/256MB, to be delivered this week. When I get it I will post a review. In the meantime I've posted on my blog about it and the other things I plan to add to the set-up:

My Mac 10.7.5 won't shut down after a new software installation (Security Update 2013-003). It just hangs at a grey screen with "Software Update" at the top. I have to force quit, then restart-- but the new software hasn't installed.
My Mac also intermittently goes into Sleep mode, repeatedly, unprompted by me. I suspect a connection between these two problems.
I have tried deleting the /Library/Updates folder. It hasn't helped. The update still won't install, and my Mac won't shut down without my forcing the quit.
Help please!Hi, I've just come accross the same problem... did you manage to get a resolution??
Cheers, Chris. -
Final Cut shuts down on new Mac Pro
Hi all,
We've got a new Mac Pro: 3 GHz dual core, 9 GBs of RAM. We've installed Final Cut Pro 5 (via the universal crossgrade and Studio Upgrade).
When Final Cut is opened the preview and program windows are green and will not show video. If Final Cut is shut down then re-opened Final Cut crashes on opening. We've been on the phone with Apple Tech support and the last action they suggested was reinstalling OS X, then re-installing Final Cut Pro. We've done so, and have the same problem.
Thoughts? Suggestions?
Thanks much in advance,
JoeyLet's look at the crash log... When you crash, you get the option of Reporting to Apple? Take that and copy this section of the log:

Iphoto shut down importing new photo (and rebuilding thumbnails too)
I'm using iphoto '11 9.1.15 (615) and i think it is the latest one and Lion.
I last imported some photos on july 02 and everything was right. Then after july 14 i installed Lion and i could also use iphoto but for some day i have used it only to see my old photo.
Same day ago i tried to import new photo and iphoto had sudden shut down during import.
First i have tried to rebuild library using cmd alt at start up, issue remained.
So using cmd alt at iphoto start up I cheecked all and i have obteined only that now thumbnails are disappeared.
Now also if I try to rebulid thumnails iphoto immediatly shuts.
I've tried to rebuid library using Iphoto Library Manager butI have this message of error:
iPhoto has unexpectedly quit while importing the event "Rullino ...". If you would like to relaunch iPhoto and continue the merge starting with the event "Rullino ...", click "Continue". If you would like to continue, but skip the event "Rullino ...", click "Skip". If you would like to stop the merge, click "Cancel".
Repairing permissions of Iphto and of iphoto library didn't help.
At end i have tried also using a new account and a new library importi a single photo adn issue is still there.
Any time I start iphoto it says "rebuilding thumbnails cache" but nothing happen.
No message of error appear when iphoto shuts improperly is there any places were i could look for it ? (Logs ?)
I think to have said evrything helping you to help me but i'try to answer any of yours question.
Thank for your help
Mario Agostiniat the and a crash has happened.
may be of help ?

Cannot shut down my new Satellite notebook
My new Satellite C series won't wake up. It's working but +screen is blank.+
Worse I can't reboot because I +cannot shut down the machine+. User Man says hold on/off switch down for a period. But this does not turn off machine.
User Manual otherwise useless.
Help. The same thing has happened to me twice since I bought my Satellite L series notebook a few months ago.
*The answer is to unplug the notebook if it is connected to an outlet, then remove the battery, wait for a few minutes, reinsert the battery, wait a few minutes, then restart the computer.*
This has worked for me twice, but I wonder whether the fact that the screen turns black for no apparent reason while I am working at the computer means that something in the hardware is defective. -
Windows randomly shutting down with new built pc
Morning folks, I'm typing this from my other laptop right now. I just built a tower for gaming and I'm having an issue with windows 8.1. It will randomly turn off anywhere from a minute or less after launching and logging in to 5 minutes after
launching and logging in. I can't seem to tell what's triggering it either. If I try to do anything a screen comes up with a sad face emoticon and tells me that something is wrong but I can never read the full message before the computer shuts
down completely. It's not a soft landing either it's as if I held down the power button. If you can tell me what information to give you I'll try my best. My concern is I won't be able to get error or crash logs because if I try to do anything
the computer shuts down. I'm currently sitting here not moving and letting it sit at desktop to see if anything happens. So far it seems stable to it's only when I'm actively doing stuff.
Concerns I've seen people bring up, yes it is a legal version of 8.1 and yes I did activate the product, I wasn't able to set up my wireless adapter before the computer would shut down so I had to activate it over the phone, it didn't crash during that.
From there I was able to install the wireless drivers successfully and actually access the internet. But as I was heading to a speedtest page the window came up and my computer shut down again. From there it has shut down multiple times after just
minutes of trying to get online and install a game.
I've gone into BIOS and disabled the fast boot that someone has mentioned and I changed my power settings to be on high performance and turned off the timed shutdowns/sleep/driver shut down. I don't think it was any of that though because, 1, it's
still happening and 2, those things were if it was shutting down after so long mine seems more random and in a much shorter time span.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
edit: I'm going to keep this updated, I'm at the moment installing my motherboards drivers/utilities. Apparently I forgot to do that from the disk. If that's the case and fixes it then I'll let you all know. I still need to install these
and whatever is on the disk saying 'afterburner' lol. This is my first time ever building a pc and I'm doing it with no help so bare with me. Took me all night to figure out I had a couple things wired wrong with the hard drive and a couple fans.Okay so after installing the drivers and doing some updates after things were installed the computer ran well for a good few hours. In the mean time I was watching youtube and reading a different forum while I was downloading a game. A couple
hours in the computer BSOD'd again but this time I think it's more manageable as I was actually able to read what it said and it was the more common one saying an issue occurred, and your computer needs to restart and it is collecting data. It then shut
down very quickly as if it were a hard shut down and did not reboot on its own.
I'm going through the same actions again and waiting to see if it reoccurs or if it was a fluke. I don't have the DMP files at the moment because I had to change the setting after reading the guide because it the folder wasn't in windows. It
still isn't there after I made the changes and rebooted but I think that's because an incident hasn't happened yet in order to create the file. In the mean time I turned off fast boot as it seems to be a common instigator of the problem. I'll get
back to you if the problem arises again with the proper logs and dump files as it seems the computer is stable enough to actually navigate there now. Woo! Progress! -
Shut down! NEW! With system log!
Hello! I came back in to my office after dinner and found my G5 off. I didn't turn it off. I start up and check the System Log, and found this log: (I did a search of this board and couldn't find anything recognizeable.)
I had a problem with a bad memory stick a few months ago shutting down my system but the replacement solved that problem, so it seemed.
Could a log-savvy user please look this over and maybe get a diagnosis? Many thanks!

G5 Dual 2.3 Mac OS X (10.4.2)Scott Seibel-
I am not sure which came first, the chicken or the egg. The kernel panic may have been just as the power was failing or perhaps you do have something that is going bad.
Although the Bulldog software reports the UPS as ok, have you actually tested that theory? Try unplugging it from the wall and see how much juice it really does have.
What have you got connected externally? I have heard of FW drives causing some wonky problems.
I did a search of this forum and unfortunately a lot of issues where the unit just "shuts down" are fixed by replacing the power supply. Do you have AppleCare? If so, maybe they can help.
Luck-

Macbook will not shut down (bought new in June)
I saw some other threads on this. Mine will not shut down and I have the latest software updates on Leopard, bought my 13 in. Macbook in June. I have run it a lot, so that it gets warm but seemed to work fine until I try to shut down. I'm really worried about this because I hate to have to force it to shut down by turning it off. I do not have that third party program installed that someone said he'd downloaded and had to remove to get it to work. I hope I don't have to uninstall what little I have installed, such as Intego firewall/antvirus/personal backup, Camino, Sunbird, Flip4Mac, Washing Machine, and Io programs by Time Cycles. I don't run any of those other programs much, mostly just Safari and just now an HP printer driver. I wonder if doing a lot of scanning using the HP printer driver is what caused the problem. I just downloaded the HP printer driver right before this happened, I think. But I really need that to work.
My computer starts to hang when I shut it down and says it can't log out until I shut down something else, which is generally a program that is not even running. I wish this would stop; I'm not sure what to do about it or whether turning the computer off will hurt it. I don't know if I'm supposed to "zap PRAM" or something but I already did that for a different reason a few days ago and don't want to do that a lot. Thanks for your message. I actually just logged in to report that I solved the issue by going to Disk Utility / First Aid / verify permissions/ repair permissions.
The problem was that the HP Officejet 7300 Series printer driver I had recently installed had all sorts of permissions wrong and they are now repaired. And the Macbook has now shut down properly twice in a row. I wonder if I should report that to HP?
** I wonder what damage if any I did by shutting off the computer using the power button two or three times in the past 24 hours when I needed to shut the computer down prior to repairing the permissions problem?*
And I did see the Activity Monitor in the Utilities section on my own just prior to trying Disk Utility / first aid / repair permissions (the disk it self didn't need repair, supposedly). I don't really think activity monitor was going to help in this instance because I did shut down all the programs, but I'll be testing that utility in the future.
I bet now would be a good time to hurry up and get Disk Warrior.
