Is it necessary to Stuffit or Zip files before sending to print service?

Is it a good idea to compress a PDF before sending it by email or FTP?  I work on a Mac in CS3 and have not had any problems with file corruption, but have read that this is the safest way to send files. Can high resolution for print jobs still be preserved if files are compressed?  Thanks for any input.

In addition to Nina's: no, ZIP does not prevent corruption. However, it's far easier to detect if a file got corrupted because ZIP makes heavy use of checksumming, to ensure every single last bit (*) is at its proper place in the file. A PDF contains similar checks but on a more basic level.
There are some other differences: if a PDF got mangled in transfer, there is no way to open it. If it's truncated, it might be possible to open it (you'd get a "Repair this file?" prompt) -- but be aware there is no way telling what parts didn't get through.
If a ZIP got mangled or truncated, there is no way to successfully recover it, which usually is what you'd want (because you'd know for sure the transfer failed).
(*) Not really, but the chance it misses anything misplaced is something like one in four billion.

  • Password protect files before sending to backup

    I use dropbox for online backup. They lack the ability to password protect files before sending them to dropbox. Is there a way to do this, given how dropbox works?
    Or, is there a backup service similar to dropbox (windows and mac in one account) that does provide password protection before sending?
    One option is to compress and encrypt the files then drop that zip into a dropbox folder. I'd loose the auto backup monitoring since I would have to get involved with each backup but that's ok if nothing else is available. Any suggestions on something free that can compress and password protect the compressed file? Or if nothing free, what else is good?

    How do I know the DMG is going over to dropbox encrypted?
    Control-Click on the .dmg
    Select Show Package Contents.
    You should now see the individual 8MB chunks that make up the Encrypted Sparse Bundle.
    Open any of them (maybe using TextEdit, or TexWrangler, or Smultron). If you can figure out what is says, then encryption is not working. However, what you should see is gobbledy gook (encrypted data).
    Also, the DMG initially set its size to 100MB. Can that grow dynamically?
    I am not sure, but I think it will not. However, because you are using a Sparse Bundle, it will only consume the space it needs to hold the files you put into the mounted .dmg, so you can size it for a very large size. Maybe the size limit Dropbox imposes on you.

  • Compress Smartform PDF file before sending mail

    Hi Experts,
    I need to compress PO smartform.Smartform already converted into PDF file.Vendor received this file as an attachement in their mail box.Vendor complains that file size is too large.They want to compress that PDF file before sending mail.
    Anybody can suggest how to compress a smartform which is already converted into PDF.

    Hi Michael/Satyajit,
    First of all thanks for the suggestions.
    Actually I am working for a application maintenance project and after go-live user is complaining that previously the PO form size was 57 KB and after this implementation the form size is 618KB that is not acceptable.
    I checked with the legacy system and found that the previous form was developed using SAPScript,converted to PDF and then used to send as an attachement to user mail box.
    The new development environment using Smartform for PO form and then it is converted to PDF and send as an attachement to user mail box.I checked with the Logo and the logo size is only of 9KB.No other graphics used in the form.The developer had used 3-4 boxes in the form and page format is landscape. Style is used in the form and the used font is courier,font size is 10 pt .
    Will change in style's font and font size reduces the size upto that level??

  • File Adapter to read Zip file and send it as input to another webservice

    Hi,
    I have the below requirement:
    1. A service will generate 3 attachments and place it in a particular directory.
    2. SOA service has to pick those 3 files and send those files as input to another custom application which will email.
    Design :
    1. First SOA will create an archive file of those 3 attachements and then file adapter will poll for that zip file in that location and send that file as a whole to the custom application.
    Query:
    Now my question, is the above design feasible? If so, how to configure the file adapter to pass the file as input to that custom application?
    Kindly do the needful
    Thanks,
    Priya

    You can accomplish this via java embedding activity...Create a java embedding, which will create a zip file.. this java code is easy to implement..
    You can also do away with un-necessary polling file adapter.. and you can use "Synchronous File Read" operation of File Adapter.. For Sync Read, you'll have to pass the zip file name, which you can easily fetch from java embedding activity..
    Let me know, if this doesn't work.

  • Rename the zip file and send it using the Receiver Mail Adapter

    Hi,
    We have a custom module that will create multiple attachments. The result is then passed to the PayloadZipBean, which zips as per required.
    When we output this to a file adapter, we provide the file name as say "zippedfile.zip" the result is as expected.
    For example, if the custom module created 3 attachments with the names as file1.txt, file2.txt and file3.txt, the zip file zippedfile.zip, will contain 3 files as file1.txt, file2.txt and file3.txt.
    The issue that we are facing is when we use the mail adapter, the zip file is getting renamed to file1.txt.zip i.e to say that it takes the name of the main payload from the custom module (file1.txt)
    TextPayload txtpayload = message.getDocument();
    txtpayload.setContentType("text/plain");
    txtpayload.setName("file1.txt");
    moduleData.setPrincipalData(message);
    We tried using the MessageTransformbean but it doesn't seem to change the name of the file.
    Not sure where we are going wrong. Is it that the output of the payloadzipbean cannot be used and altered by MessageTransformbean?
    Is there any alternative as to rename the name of zipfiles and use it in the mail adapter?
    Appreciate any help on this regard.
    Regards,
    Shabz

    Solved.
    use Transform.ContentDisposition - attachment;filename="youfilename"
    Do read the mail adapter FAQ.
    The parameter can vary for different mail client.

  • Windows User Says She is Not Receiving All Zipped Files I Send on Mac

    Hi,
    I am using a MPB running Snow Leopard, Version 10.6.8, and I send a weekly batch of seven Word documents in a zip file to a client using Archive Utility. However, lately she has told me she has gotten six files, then a folder that is called "Mac OSX", and within that folder are the same six files, and she never sees the seventh one. When I send the same zip file that I send her to myself in Gmail, and I get the seven Word docs as expected. Does anyone know what might be going on? I am perplexed, especially because I cannot reproduce it on my end. Oddly enough, she says she got all seven files last week, but not this week, or two weeks ago, so it doesn't happen consistently, but I told her I'd try and sort it out.
    Thanks!

    Hi Experts,
    how can I found the EDI File generated for a SHPMNT and edit it before sending it ?
    User create an outbound delivery and transport. By saving the transport we create/edit the EDI Message SHPMNT (with user-exit) but don't send it. It will be send by using a Z-Programm which made the Good Issue.
    The probem is following: After saving the transport, the user want to modifiy, for example, the Shpg.Cond. into the Out.Delivery Head. How can I actualize the EDI Message with the new value of Shpg.Cond. ???

    Hi Vinod,
    thanks for your quick answer.
    We have 1 EDI File for 1 SHPMNT. But 1 SHPMNT may contain several Outb.Deliv. with the same Ship-to-Party...
    I found the Function EDI_DOCUMENT_OPEN_FOR_EDIT with EDI_DOCUMENT_CLOSE_EDIT.
    How can I find the Idoc No. of the EDI-File???

  • Corrupt or damaged file after sending to print

    I'm using CS3 and when I email files to print they are not able to open bc damaged or corrupt. We use at least 4 printers-this is the only one that has problems with the files.
    I've heard I need to save down to CS1 is this correct? Or not necessary-The printer I am sending to have CS3 as well...
    They are placing files in Illustrator...but sometimes downloading them and then opening them..
    Any suggestions? This is becoming a problem

    I'm not up on all of the latest offerings. However...
    I hear WinZip is still the most popular. It is supposed to be easy to use.
    I use PKZip and like it.
    Another option is Smith Micro's StuffIt (which I also keep on my machine), which can create both .zip and .sit/.sitx archives.

  • How do I get the byte size of a server file before sending output via HTTP?

    I need to get the byte size of the file prior to streaming it. I can't seem to find a class/method I need. Basically, I have the path c:\\tomcat\\webapps\\documents\\sample.pdf in the servlet, I was hoping I could just use something from the File class but I couldn't find anything that seems to do the trick?
    thanks, in advance,
    Chuck

    maybe the source of the problem will help...I am trying to stream a PDF to IE and a blank page is being generated although all other file type work.
    I have found a lot of answers in the forum but no specific code examples. Here's what I have so far from picking through threads in here (can someone please show me how to get the byte size of the file so that I can assign it to the method response.setContentLength();?):
    String CONTENT_TYPE = " ";
         String target = " ";
    public void doGet(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response)
    throws ServletException, IOException {
         StringBuffer buf = new StringBuffer();
         HttpSession session = request.getSession();
         String file = request.getParameter("filename");
         target = file;
         int end = file.length();
    int beg = end-2;
         String type = file.substring(beg, end);
         if (type.equals("DOC")){
              CONTENT_TYPE = "application//vnd.msword";
         }else if (type.equals("XLS")){
              CONTENT_TYPE = "application//vnd.x-excel";
         }else if (type.equals("PPT")){
              CONTENT_TYPE = "application//vnd.ms-powerpoint";
         }else if (type.equals("PDF")){
              CONTENT_TYPE = "application//vnd.x-pdf";
         }else if (type.equals("MPP")){
              CONTENT_TYPE = "application//vnd.ms-project";
         }else if (type.equals("ZIP")){
              CONTENT_TYPE = "application//ZIP";
         }else if (type.equals("TXT")){
              CONTENT_TYPE = "text//plain";
         }else {
              CONTENT_TYPE = "text//html";
         //File f = new File(file);
         //int l = f.length();
         response.setContentLength(l); <----- supposedly this fixes my problem but I don't know how to get the byte szie of the file in an integer??
         // reset the response
         response.reset();
         response.setContentType(CONTENT_TYPE);
         try{
         // Get streams
         FileInputStream fileInputStream = new FileInputStream(target);
         ServletOutputStream servletOutputStream = response.getOutputStream();
         // Init byte count and array
         int bytesRead = 0;
         byte byteArray[] = new byte[4096];
         // Read in bytes through file stream, and write out through servlet stream
         while((bytesRead = fileInputStream.read(byteArray)) != -1) {
         servletOutputStream.write(byteArray, 0, bytesRead);
              servletOutputStream.flush();
         // Flush and close streams
         servletOutputStream.flush();
         servletOutputStream.close();
         fileInputStream.close();

  • How do you change name of the files before sending files to FTP site?

    Hi guys,
    my environment is SQL Server 2008 R2.
    Currently, I'm trying to figure out how to tackle the following project:
    I have over 100 files that I need to send via FTP on daily basis.
    Before doing so, I must change the extension of the file to a specific characters stored in a sql server table, for example if the file name is Store1.txt the new name will be Store1.111
    I was hoping that you guys can point me in the right directions :-)
    Codernater

    I would use a script task for renaming, Pass the data from the SQL table with the extension you want via a object variable to the script task iterate the files in the directory and rename as requried
    this code and link would help you
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/12347881/renaming-files-in-folder-c-sharp
    DirectoryInfo d = new DirectoryInfo("....");
    FileInfo[] infos = d.GetFiles();
    foreach(FileInfo f in infos)
    File.Move(f.FullName, f.FullName.ToString().Replace("abc_","");

  • Am prompted to save a web page as a file before I can print it. How to fix it. Also Yahoo toobar was installed. Are they related

    Someone asked if I could help with this problem they are having with Firefox with Windows XP.
    There are a couple things going on that may or may not be related.
    Firstly the Yahoo toolbar was installed in Firefox. I assume this was bundled with another program or update.
    Also, if you try to print a webpage from within Firefox you are prompted to save the file first. I tried printing a page from Firefox on my computer (Firefox 30 Mozilla Firefox for Linux Mint - 1.0) and was not prompted to save the file first.
    I'm assuming that this issue is related to the Yahoo toolbar.
    Any ideas on how to fix this?

    Hi muttleytm,
    The official download is not bundled with the toolbar. [https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/]
    Reset the printing settings/preferences with this :[[Fix printing problems in Firefox]] ]
    And you can try to disable the toolbar temporarily or try safe mode if there are other add ons installed: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]]

  • Stuffit expanding OS X zip files to exe?

    why is stuffit expanding zip files of macintosh software to windows .exe that quicktime tries to open and does not recognise?
    any fixes?
    thanks

    Are these files you are downloading? If so, I would guess you are not downloading the Mac versions of the files. Stuffit just expands files it doesn't create them so if they are .exe files that it is unzipping then check the version of the file. Almost all Mac files are either .sit or .dmg files. Very very few mac files are zipped and none are .exe files
