Is it necessary to use a Firewire back up HD before cloning HD

I want to upgrade my OSX 10.4 to snow leopard-(adding memory first) It was suggested to run Super Duper to back up system first.  The information suggests back up with a firewire HD.  I have a passport USB external.  Will this do?

Below is SuperDuper's system requirements that include information about this.
"Please note that SuperDuper! is not designed to back up to CDs, DVDs or Tape, and needs a location (other than the boot volume) to store the backup - typically a volume on an internal or external (FireWire) drive. SuperDuper! only copies HFS+ (Mac-native/Mac OS Extended) volumes.
Note also that USB drives do not allow booting Power PC based Macintoshes under any version of Mac OS X: this is not a SuperDuper! limitation, but one of the OS. If you would like to boot from a backup stored on an external drive, and have a Power PC based Mac, please purchase a Mac compatible FireWire drive. Intel Mac users can boot from either USB or FireWire drives"
I'm not sure if this helps but Super's support email is [email protected]

  • Is it necessary to use a case for iPhone 5? The back of iPhone 5 isn't scratch resistant?

I own a white iPhone 5 and just worried about the looks and the beauty of the phone. I just don't want to lose it. Is it necessary to use a case to protect the back of the iPhone? ( Actually I hate using cases personally, but if I need to use for retaining the beauty, I will use one.)

    To pichasagar,
Check out Spigen.com they've got this line of really thin case.

Or put a skin on it, transparent or not, from Spigen or from http://www.skinit.com/
I have no affliation with either company.

  • My MacBook Pro hard drive is almost full and I wish to store my Aperture Library on an external drive, how do I do this and is the use of USB2 suitable or do I need to use a Firewire external hard drive?

My MacBook Pro hard drive is almost full and I wish to store my Aperture Library on an external drive, how do I do this and is the use of USB2 suitable or do I need to use a Firewire external hard drive?

You'll get better performance if you use a Firewire hard drive (especially if you buy a 7200 RPM drive). Firewire's IO speed is significantly faster than USB 2.  USB 2 has a theoretical max speed of 480 Mbps except that it has extremely high over-head.   The fastest speeds you can typically get are about 300 Mbps.   Firewire, on the other hand, has very little overhead.  The fastest speeds you can get are very nearly 800 Mbps.  You will typically be constrained by the maximum read/write speed of the drive, not the speed of the I/O on the Firewire bus.  Now if you had one of those nice shiny new Macs with the Thunderbolt I/O and a Thunderbolt drive (Light Peak) ... I think they alter space and time so that your data arrives before you know you want it.
Also... unless you want to buy a solid state drive (very expensive), try to keep your hard drives from becoming much more than about 60% full if you want great performance.  A nearly "full" hard drive is, on average, only about half as fast as the same hard drive when nearly empty.
USB 2 will work perfectly fine... just not as fast.
Also... it's much safer to move the entire Aperture library than to "relocate masters".  Your images must be managed.  You can Aperture manage them, or you can manage them.  But someone has to manage them.  If you "relocate" them so that they are no longer stored inside the Aperture library then you'll need to work out a system of how you decide to organize things and it's critically important that you don't start moving files around or deleting things without Aperture's knowledge.  If you do, you'll break the links to your masters and start having problems with missing masters.  If you have Aperture manage the library then you don't need to worry about any of that stuff.... it's safer.
Do make backups (use the Aperture Vault or use some other backup program, but make sure you back up your work if you care about it.)  There are only two kinds of hard drives in the world:  (1) those that have failed and (2) those that are going to fail.  There are no exceptions to this rule.  Hard drives are cheap.  Backup software is built into Aperture and into your Mac.

  • I have just upgraded from a Macbook to a Macbook Air. I have been using a iomega external hard drive for Time Machine, which use a Firewire. However, Macbook Air's do not have a Firewire port and i cannot find an adaptor anywhere. Can anyone help?? Thanks

There has never been a reliable firewire ---> USB adapter suitable for external high speed storage.  This was a major issue when the MacBooks lost the firewire port a number of years ago (Apple subsequently brought it back).
The only high speed port on the Air is the ThunderBolt port.  There are external ThunderBolt drive options out there, but they're somewhat more expensive than traditional USB/FireWire options.

  • Using both firewire 400 & 800 at the same time?

I have a 20" Imac 2.66ghz, and I have a 1TB WD Studio Edition My Book attached to the firewire 800 port. It is partitioned in to two 500GB partitions, one for time machine, and one for media.
I have a Canon MD101 DV camera which I have been trying to import video from, not very succesfully. I had given up, and was going to go to an Apple store to try and sort out the problem.
I have bought a new firewire cable with gold contacts to see if that would improve the situation. Today I managed to import direct from the camera, but I hadn't realised I had disconnected the hard drive by mistake.
On further investigation it would appear I can use either firewire ports seperatly, but not together. My Camera is recognised evrytime by Imovie if the hard drive is disconnected, but not if it is connected.
The problem I have is that the media partition on that hard drive was for my videos imports.
Are there any settings that would enable both firewire ports to be used at the same time?

    Hi Peter
Try a 4 to 9 pin FireWire 800 cable and connect the camera up to the spare FireWire 800 port on the back of the WD Studio Drive.

  • Issue Using both Firewire Ports on 24" iMac

I just got a new 24" iMac with the 3.06 processor. I intend to use it with Pro Tools and other music making software. I have an audio interface that is firewire only and an external hard drive (where I store my audio files) that is both firewire and USB. The problem is that I when I use both firewire ports (800 and 400) at the same time, my Pro Tools starts acting up. And I found one post stating that this was a known issue with the 24". But that was back in May and I thought it would have been resolved by now. Anyway, when I use the USB port on my hard drive instead of the firewire, everything works. Also, on my 17" iMac PPC G5 everything works just fine on there, including using both firewire ports a the same time. Finally, I've got the latest updates on all devices involved. Has anyone experienced this problem or have any knowledge of it? Thanks in advance.

I've got a similar problem. I've got a WD external drive connected via FW800 and an Mbox pro 2 audio interface connected via FW400 to my 24" mid 2007 iMac. They both power on (the mbox gets it's power from the iMac) and are recognised by the iMac. However, the WD drive seems to take dominance at some point during start up. The reason I know this is because I was watching the LED on the Mbox light up as I sent it signal from the guitar and then it suddenly stopped lighting up. I tried daisy chaining the mbox to the WD but outcome was the same. Then tried chaining the WD drive to the Mbox (this meant the WD drive was now down to FW400 speed). It worked!!!.............until the next time I started up the computer. The WD drive wasn't recognised by the iMac.
I'm not impressed with the iMac's inability to deal with devices from both it's ports. Why put them on the machine if they can't handle it?
I bought the WD drive to work at FW800 speed and don't want to have to submit to USB 2.0 if I can help it.
    Any suggestions welcome.
    Thanks

  • Is it necessary to use a rs232 interface?

Hi, I have a AL104 mass scale and I'm trying to read the weight on labview, I hook it up to the computer using a rs232 cable, but I don't really understand how the device and the computer is communicating, I use VISA to write the program, but I can't locate the resourse name (address of the input) . Some one told me I might need to use a rs232-GPIB converter, because the computer is not detecting the hardware. I want to ask, is it necessary to use a converter in order for the computer to send and receive signal from the device? becasue it seems to me that even the pc and the device is connected thru the cable, the data still not transfering between the two... or how do I check the computer knows the device is "attached"??
Really appreciate if someone can go thru what I should do from the beginning to when I'm able to read the output from the computer!!!
    Thanks!!

RS-232 and GPIB are two different things.  Looking up AL104 by Google, I came across this page that as a link to the manual  http://balance.balances.com/scales/1114
The manual shows it is using RS-232.  That means you write a command to the Com port and read back the response.  There is no hardware to detect.  Your VISA port will be whatever com port you have it connected to.  Com1, com2, ....
That manual told to look for the command set.  I found this link   http://us.mt.com/mt_ext_files/Editorial/Generic/1/PL-S_SICS_0x0002467000027246000b531d_files/B-S-AL-...  That should tell you all you need to know about communicating with the balance.

  • Can the Time Capsule be used just to back up on an existing wi-fi network?

Can the Time Capsule be used just to back up on an existing wi-fi network?    We just set-up a new Xfinity wireless modem which is supposed to be very fast, but Time Capsule set-up instructions indicate we need to use the Time capsule as the primary internet connection.   True?

My mistake. Meant to reply to snorris3. Text is repeated below:
Can I still use it as a back up device?   My new modem is also the router.
    Yes you can.
The best way (and really the only way) to set up the Time Capsule would be to connect an Ethernet cable from your modem/router to the Time Capsule.
The Time Capsule will produce a wireless network by default, but if you don't want to use that network, it is a simple matter to turn off the wireless on the Time Capsule and use it only as a  hard drive for backups.
I would be very surprised if the Xfinity modem/router would even come close to the wireless performance of the Time Capsule, but that may be another discussion.
If you elect not to use the wireless on the Time Capsule, then you will be backing up over the existing wireless network that you already have.
That would be a shame, since a third to half of the total cost of the Time Capsule is tied up in the wireless router portion of the Time Capsule. If you want to use the existing Xfinity wireless network, you could save yourself quite a bit of money by simply connecting a USB or Firewire hard drive to your Mac for backups. But, it's your call.

  • Can Time Capsule be used to access video files for editing?  Or do I need a wired hard drive using USB/Firewire/Thunderbolt?

MORE INFO ABOUT WHAT I AM TRYING TO DO:
I'm using Final Cut Express 4 and would like to store my video clips on an external hard drive so the internal hard drive in my MacBook Pro 13 doesn't have to work so hard.  I heard from a reliable source that it might be impossible to access the files wirelessley though, meaning that I might need to get a wired external hard drive that uses USB, Firewire or Thunderbolt.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks a lot.
    -Rick

The experts in the iPhoto, Aperture and iMovie support areas all strongly advise against trying to locate a "working" library on a network drive, like the Time Capsule, even if the Mac is hard wired to the Time Capsule. Things would be a lot more dangerous with a wireless connection.
    Apple does as well:
“Additionally, storing the iPhoto (or other image) library on a network rather than locally on your computer can also lead to poor performance or data loss.”
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5168
You might want to post in the Final Cut Express support area to see if the folks over there feel the same way.
    Final Cut Express HD
Your best best....if you do not have the space on your Mac's hard drive.....would be to add a USB, FireWire or Thunderbolt drive directly to the Mac to establish a "local" connection. This is much better and more reliable setup that trying to use a network drive, like a Time Capsule.
Use the Time Capsule for its designed and intended purpose....your backups.....not "working" files. Time Machine on your Mac can back up both your Mac and the attached hard drive to the Time Capsule.

Hello i am using TimeMachine to back-up entire Mac image (data + system) on an usb-local drive. I would like (on top of it) add a specific plan to back up some files on a remote network drive. Does TimeMachine support multiple back-up plans ? How ?

Time Machine is capable of backing up to multiple locations, and can be used to back up to both a local hard drive and a networked drive (provided that that drive is in or connected to a Time Capsule or another Mac that is sharing it over the network). The catch, though, is that you can't specify different things to back up to different destinations. Whatever you exclude from Time Machine backups is excluded from ALL backups, and whatever is included is included on all.
So, get a large enough drive that you can back up everything you want in all locations, or use something else for maintaining the network backup.

  • Where can I find an adapter that will let me use my firewire 800 devices with a thunderbolt only ported macbook air?

Been looking for a way to use my firewire 800 devices with my macbook air - which has only usb and thunderbolt ports.  I've seen internet pages for an adapter from sonnet but have not found anywhere to actually purchase such a thing.  Would love to be able to at least try to use the thunderbolt port - for something - or trade the thing in for something with present day usable firewire 800 ports.  Is this thunderbolt technology already getting shelved?  I see like 5 items on the market that actually use this port...  really?  That's it?   Thank you for any guidance!

How do I get those back since I've paid for them one before? Can you redownload? If so, how?? Please help as I'm missing over 500 previously paid for and downloaded iTunes song purchases.

This was EXACTLY what I needed about the purchases I made from my device. However, is there a way to re-download other ones you've made from a computer? Because I realized some of them were not just purchased from my device.
This is a picture of what it looks like now:
