Is it normal for LR to freeze up 5 minutes when moving source of spot repair?

I've been using LR several years and, until last week, always left unchecked the "Automatically write changes into XMP" box in Catalog Settings because I had read that it slows performance (which seems logical).  However, several gurus recommend checking that box so that metadata is always current in the image files or XMPs.  So, I checked the box last week and didn't notice any performance change except when selecting a bunch of files and making a change.  But, yesterday I discovered and validated that if, during spot repair, I don't like LR's choice of where to draw from and move that source to another location, LR seriously locks up--5 minutes or more.  When I un-check the box, there is no freeze.  I'm working with high-res .TIF files here, scans from slides at about 50 Mpx & 16 bit depth so around 110 MB on disk; I haven't tried this yet on a raw file where LR would only be re-writing a small XMP file.
Has anyone else seen this?  Is there a workaround other than un-checking the box, which I've done while I'm doing spot repair?  It seems like LR might be re-writing the file for every set of pixel coordinates between initial and final location when I drag the source, rather than just the final new coordinates when I release the mouse button.

Locking for 5 minutes is abnormal. With auto-write xmp enabled it should just tag the files for xmp writing to be done leisurely in the near future (in the background) and not interfere with anything, whether it's trying to do it for every incremental movement or not.
That said, I recommend leaving auto-write xmp off anyway. Why?
You've already got current settings in the catalog. If you only save
xmp manually, after milestone editing and inspection of images,
then you are guaranteed xmp does NOT included the same goofs
your catalog does (or might). If you never goof, then please identify
home planet, cause it sure ain't Earth, and you sure ain't human..
So, my advice? - have a "finalization" procedure - when done editing
images, for now anyway:
* inspect image edits..
* save XMP.
That way, if ever you need to fall back to a "milestone" state which isn't
in backup catalog, you can just read XMP.
Cheers,
Rob

Is it normal for 10-20% cpu to be used when idle and watching activity monitor?
I have a macbook 6,1, 4gb of ram, and my os seems to be spinning the rainbow quite often and laggy. I watch my activity monitor and it never drops below 90% cpu available. Is this normal? if not what can I do to clean up my os. Does anyone have any resources or help? Thanks

    Hello:
    Answer - no.
The activity monitor should indicate what is consuming the processor when your system is idle.
I just looked at my own system with Safari running and the usage is about 3%.

  • Is it normal for the MacBook Pro to make noises when I put it to sleep?

I apologize for posting a new question so soon, but I wanted to get my technical problems with my MacBook Pro sorted out before I go back to school.
I'm worried about this one thing that happens when my MacBook Pro goes to sleep. After I close the laptop and it goes into "sleep mode" every few minutes or so it makes this noise like it keeps on turning on then going back to sleep, turning on then going back to sleep. It never did this before. Does anyone else hear these weird noises when it's in sleep mode?
For some reason it does not make these noises when I press the power button, and then press sleep. So this confuses me.

I have the same problem after just having my logic board replaced.

  • Is it normal for the 4s to get kinda hot when running apps/ video recording?

Any know? Hope it's not a hardware issue.

It's normal to get pretty warm when running hard, i.e. video or some apps.  If it gets too hot to touch, that's not normal.

  • Is it normal for the Panels to make slight noises when applied with some pressure such as opening the and closing the Mac? It sounds like the screws are not tight enough or is it normal?

Hi, My Mac is around 2 months old, and I have recently come across a slight problem. I've experienced some slight noises happening such as when I open and close the macbook it makes some sort of clicking noises as if to say the panels are loose or have not been screwed properly... It only happens when pressure is applied e.g. when I am typing I tend to rest the palms of my hand on the two plain sections of the mac (next to the track pad) and this causes some sort of pressure to push down to the connecting panel underneath, this is when the clicking sound happens.
I don't know maybe I'm just expecting too much or it might just be what I think it is, anyway if anyone has experience this issue, feel free to share your point of views or past similar experience. Thanks.

Yes.. It's been a while, but I remember thinking the same thing!

  • Pismo Freezes or Shuts Down When Moved

    Hi All,
I am the proud owner of a much souped-up Pismo that is my primary computer for work. I have dealt with many issues over the years from PRAM battery to replacing the hinges (that was the worst, by far).
But now I have a new problem and I hope someone can help. I assume this is a hardware issue, and I THINK it's a power issue but I'm not sure. Whenever I move the computer, even slightly, it freezes. Say it's up and running, I"m listening to iTunes and working in Word. If I even nudge the base of the computer it freezes. If I pick it up, it goes dark and appears to shut off altogether. So far I haven't lost any work, but obviously this is an untenable situation.
I'm really loathe to take it apart down to the power area (been there and it ain't pretty), so I hope someone has a nifty solution, or at least a good idea where to start.
    Thanks,
    GB

Probably I can't be of much help since I don't have a Pismo, but this sounds a lot like a loose connection somewhere. It may be worth reseating any flex cables that are easy to get to and maybe even checking for physical damage like a broken trace that sometimes makes contact and sometimes doesn't. It seems to me that if it were a basic power problem, it would be shutting down instead of freezing. Just my 2¢ worth until someone who actually knows something sees this and gives you a better answer.
    Good luck!

  • FireFox keeps telling me that it can't find a server. It will sit there and think for sometimes as long as a minute when loading a page. Is this a router, modem, airport, hardware, or software problem?

Pages sometimes take as long as a minute to load. Other times they're just "there" like they should be.
I don't know what info would be helpful in figuring this out. It's not a certain website or time of day. I've got cable internet, a netgear router, and an arris modem. I'm running OS 10.5.8 and I believe I have all the current updates for the airport.

Are you talking about Locations? Not that, i meant the list on the left, use the - and + buttons at the bottom to delete/add connections ... deleting the old connection and creating a new one always works for me. Click the AirPort and click - then click + and add a new AirPort and configure it.

Try running in Safe mode.  This leaves out some video drivers.  Which results in machine not using advanced video hardware.

  • Firefox freezes for up to a minute when I have two tabs open and running a video and a flash game. Why?

Firefox freezes for up to a minute when I have two tabs open, one playing a YouTube video, the other with a flash game running, and the screen shows the contents of both tabs, one superimposed on the other. If I have other tabs open, they also appear as visual garbage on the same screen. After the freeze, everything semi-works, starting and stopping, with long frozen hangs. The frequency of this problem is increasing and greatly reduces Firefox's operating capacity. I am using Firefox 5.0 on a Windows Vista desktop made by Hewlett-Packard. I have cleared the caches and the problem persists, and I can't find any online help to explain why this is happening. I don't recall it happening with a previous version of Firefox.

Hello jesterabk, '''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
''When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.''
    Thank you.

  • Are there any known issues for macbook pro freezing (applications mostly) because of internet fluctuations?

    Hi,
I live in Philippines and our internet speed here is not very reliable.  It fluctuates a lot and sometimes, it would just drop to zero and then kick back in again.  I don't know why this is so - either it's our DSL or our router.  Nevertheless, I just want to know if there are issues with applications freezing in macbook pro (esp safari) due to internet fluctuations, causing the color wheel spin and the my laptop freezing for few seconds or sometimes minutes.  Everything would freeze, all I can move is my mouse and thant's it.  Usually, if an application is not responding, it's only that application. But l noticed this time it's causing the whole system to freeze.  I just recently upgrade to Mountain Lion.

If you're browsing the web and you're internet connection is slow or sometimes dropping, it is normal for Safari to hang or freeze for a little bit until it connects to the site you're trying to view or visit.
Try this - go to system preferences - network - advance - dns and change your dns server.

  • Movie plays for 30 secs. freezes and resumes with no sound

I transferred some movies to my Ipod and some of them play normally and some don't.
The videos play on my computer no problem. When I play certain videos on my ipod they'll run for 30 seconds, freeze for 10 seconds and restart with no sound. If I go back to the menu, the movie will play with sound for another 30 seconds and freeze again.
I've updated my software and that didn't help. So frustrating!!
Anyone else having this prob? Any suggestions to fix this?

I just got an iPod 60Gb and am having the same problem with videos I've converted to .mp4 format and loaded onto my iPod. The video plays fine for about 30 seconds, then pauses for about 5 seconds (I didn't press Pause), then continues with no sound.
Did uninstalling version 1.1 of the software and reinstalling version 1.0 work to solve this problem?
