Is it ok to carbon copy clone internal hd to the only time machine back up copy?

I Only have 1 external hd that is the only time machine backup copy of my internal hd.
wwould I risk losing the backup if I ccc internal to it?

If the external drive is large enough, and has enough free space, just use Disk Utility to create a new partition to clone to, that way you won't interfere with your TM backup.
For instructions see "Create new partitions on a disk" (About half way down the page) in:
Disk Utility 12.x: Partition a disk
You may be able to create new partitions on a disk without losing any of the files on the disk. Each partition works like a separate disk. You may need to create a new partition if you want to install multiple operating systems on your computer. You can also create partitions to help organize your files.
As a precaution, back up your data before creating new partitions on your disk
Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in Launchpad.
Select the disk where you want to create a new partition and click Partition.
Select an existing partition in the Volume Scheme list, and click Add (+).Disk Utility splits the partition into two, leaving the data from that partition in one of the new partitions. If the partition is less than half-full, Disk Utility creates two partitions of equal size. Otherwise, it creates one partition large enough for the data, and another partition with the remaining space.
Resize the partitions as needed. You can drag the dividers between the partitions in the Volume Scheme list, or you can select a partition in the Volume Scheme list, and then enter a value in the Size field.
Choose how to format the partitions that will be erased or created. For each new partition, select it, enter a name, and then choose a format.
Click Apply.
Creating a new partition on the external drive will not cause you to lose data.
Keep in mind that this will significantly reduce the amount of space available for TM, and thus, will reduce how far back in time TM will maintain a backup. If you are planing on making this a permanent thing you might want to invest in a second external drive in the near future.

  • Problems Copying Time Machine Back-Up to New Hard Disk

I tried copying my old time machine back-ups from a 500 GB WD HDD to a new Seagate 1TB. Followed the instructions from "Time Machine: How to transfer backups from the current backup drive to a new backup drive". Although terribly slow it seemed to work all well initially. Had it run over night, then discovered the next morning the process was apparently hanging.
Thinking that maybe the energy saver options were the cause of the problem, I unchecked "put hard disk to sleep when possible". So went through the same painful process. Cannot believe that after about 7 h of transfering the whole thing is stuck again:
More than 2 million items were apparently copied, now nothing is happening at all... (neither GB nor minutes changing anymore)
    1) Is this a common problem? More importantly: how can it be solved?
    2) Is there another way to transfer time machine back-ups to another hard disk?
    Thanks!

This is getting (more) annoying: turned out that something went wrong with the 500 GB HDD with the original time machine back-up. Managed to repair it in the 3rd attempt with disk utility. Heard of SuperDuper and thought I'd give it a try.
Cloning the back-up disk to the new 1 TB HDD seemed to work well, but I am a bit surprised with the result:
It seems time machine recognizes now the 1 TB Seagate HDD as a 500 GB (the size of the original WD) only?

  • Will Time Machine back up iTunes media  on a different internal drive

I have my iTunes media on a different internal drive.
Will Time machine back up that data as well?
I have two other internal drives, each 750gb.
Does Time Machine back those drives up as well? Or does it contain itself to the OS disk?

    Stephen,
Amazingly, Time Machine will do this by default!! In fact, Time Machine will back up every volume that is present at the time of the initial backup, unless told to do otherwise. I keep my iTunes and iPhoto libraries on a secondary partition of my MBP's hard drive, and Time Machine backed that up automatically.
Your backup will be contained in a "Backups.backupdb" folder on whatever external volume you choose to use for Time Machine. Within this folder, you will find other folders named for the various volumes that are being backed up. As far as I know, there is no limit to how many can be kept.

  • Can I install a new internal HDD and reboot from time machine?

I'm away from home at the moment and my internal HDD has failed and I am putting in a new HDD I have the time machine backup on a external HDD but no OSX disks with me can I re boot OS from my time machine backup?

At some point, your internal HD was selected for use as Time Machine backups, and a Backups.backupdb folder was created at the top level.   So OSX thinks you're trying to install it on the same drive as your backups.
Open your internal HD with the Finder (you won't find it via a Spotlight or Finder search) and delete that folder.

    Good morning,
I am trying to compy some folder from my time machine back up onto my desktop and I have changed the privilige for my back up to read and write...but it;s still not letting my copy the files. How come?

  • How do I copy old Time Machine back-up data onto my new (second) back up drive?

I recently bought a second back-up drive for use with my MacBook Pro (running 10.9.4).
I'm successfully backing up my computer to both drives on a regular basis using Time Machine. (a Seagate drive and a Western Digital drive respectively)
I was wondering if there's an easy way to add the old back-up files from the old drive to the new drive as well. That is to say, I wish I had all the data that precedes my new back-up drive on BOTH drives. There's plenty of space on the new drive.
Again, I'm already running Time Machine successfully to both drives, is it perhaps as easy as connecting both drives to my computer and copying the older dated back-up files over to the newer drive within the Backups.backupdb folder for my profile?
    Thanks for any help!

Although the documentation says you can copy Time Machine backups in the Finder, it's very slow and sometimes doesn't work at all.
This technique will only work if the volume you're copying to is the same size, or larger than, the one you're copying from.
First, open the Time Machine preference pane and click the Options button. You may have to unlock the settings first by clicking the padlock icon in the lower left corner of the window. Authenticate as an administrator.
Delete the volume you're going to copy from the list of backup destinations. Then turn Time Machine OFF.
Launch Disk Utility, open the built-in help, and search for the term "Duplicate." Follow the instructions. All existing data on the destination volume will be erased.
If the volume you're copying was encrypted by Time Machine, you may have to unlock it first. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar of the Disk Utility window.
Turn Time Machine back ON and select the new volume as a backup destination. You can also continue to use the old volume, if you wish. The two will be alternated when both are available.
CAUTION: If the volume you're copying is corrupt, as shown by Repair Disk or Verify Disk in Disk Utility, then that corruption will be copied to the new drive. Don't copy data from a corrupt volume on a malfunctioning drive. Put the drive aside and don't use it until you're sure you'll no longer need the data. Then securely erase it and take it to a recycling center. Do the same if the Restore operation fails with "disk errors."

  • Unable to import or copy photos from a time machine back up saved from snow leopard into iPhoto now running on lion

unable to import or copy photos from a time machine back up saved from snow leopard into iPhoto now running on lion

The correct method of restoring photos from Time Machine is to restore the entire library.
The way that TM backs up files makes nearly impossible to go into the backup via the Finder and recover individual files. So you will have to restore a library that contains the photos you need being sure to select the option to keep both versions.
Then open the restored library and export those photos you need.  Open your original library and import those photos.  After that you can delete the recently restored library.

  • Two 2TB internal drives in tandem for Time Machine; only one backup deletes.

I'm using two 2TB internal drives in tandem for Time Machine and deleted some backups while in Time Machine. They deleted from drive A, but drive B still has the files. Is there a way to delete these? I tried unmounting drive A in Disk Utility but then I can't enter Time Machine.
I love the dual backups, but should I be able to do dual deletes of all backups? I don't see a way to accomplishg this except to force Time Machine to do a backup, then do that again so it switches drives, but that seems a bit convoluted.
If one of you guru types has an answer I'd be most interested.
    Thanks.

    Mac Pro 3.1 8 Core ML.3

You can manually deal with this by using the "Browse Other Backup Disks" function which is accessed via holding the opt/alt key and while selecting the TM icon in the menu bar.
You can then delete the instances of the desired files in each backup set.
Not elegant, but I wouldn't expect that this will be done automatically, as there are a lot of permutations of how you use multiple backup sets.

Csound1, William & Sig .... thanks for taking the trouble to reply. I fear you are right - I'll need a new disk. I'm booked in at the Apple Genius Bar in Bordeaux, France on Wed ... quite a challenge as my French isn't great! The current internal disk is 500gb, does anyone know whether I can upgrade my 21.5" iMac (circa Oct-2009 vintage) to a larger size internal disk, 1Tb or even 2Tb? I already have one external 2Tb drive and another one on order (I have masses of media stored and more planned as I've just taken up photography). Seems a bit of a pain managing with only 500gb internal storage. OR, can you advise me on how I can store all my photos on my new 2Tb external drive - I can't seem to figure out how to set the path for iPhoto to see them (I can't even figure out where they are stored right now!). Same with iTunes, how do I set the default storage to the external drive (I moved everything manually and then imported them all from the new drive - it worked but seemed very convoluted). Any advice on how to manage multiple drives gratefully received. And thanks again for previous replies.

After using the internal mic for the first time I am getting a buzzing feedback from my audio output

Go to System Preferences Sound Input and adjust the volume level down by dragging the slider to the left. With an audio app like Logic there is an option for input monitoring when recording so there might be a feedback loop if the volume is set too high. Garage Band works in a similar way. Always be careful when using headphones as the noise can be frightful and cause hearing damage.

  • Copying folders from time machine back up to other Mac

    Hi,
I used Time Machine to back up my laptop (running Leopard) on a portable drive. I would like to copy a folder (containing hundreds of files) from the Latest Backup to a different mac (running Tiger). When I copy the folder, all that appears is an alias (indicated by an arrow in the bottom right corner). I tried holding down the option key while copying, no luck, the copied folder is still an alias. Any suggestions on how to get an actual copy and not an alias? (I cannot copy the individual files over, that would work, there are too many). Thanks

Since this folder contains data that get updated daily and is used by a common software on both computers, I was hoping not to have to manually copy that folder every day on the external drive, but simply to retrieve it from the Time Machine back up. Thanks for letting me know.
you can use different software for backing up this folder. CCCloner can do it although it's not very suitable for backing up single folders. or try Chronosync.

  • Time Machine Back-Up vs Clone?

I have been doing some research and have looked into the process of upgrading my hard drive. I have seen several methods, but the two I am having a hard time deciding between are cloning and using the latest back up on Time Machine to load the new hard drive.
If I use Time Machine to load my new hard drive, will it yield the same result as cloning my hard drive?
I want my computer to be exactly the same, just more space...what's the best way to do it? If Time Machine and Cloning yield the same results I feel much more comfortable using Time Machine. Let me know what you guys think!

I was wondering if you could help me.  I need to send my Mac Book Pro for servicng (the usb ports are loose) and I wanted to make sure everything was backed up before I sent it out (in case they wipe my Hardrive)  My qustion is the following: is it possible to backup software (for example, Microsoft Word, Excel, etc)  When I first bought my computer 1 1/2 yrs ago, having missed the technology boat by a few years, (when I was in college, email was starting to explode, via ether net...nothing compaired to today's technology) so when I bought my MAC, I also purchased Apple's version of Word, Excel (I guess that would be Apple's version of office, if I am not mistaken, it is called IWORK.  A few months later, I began a teaching job at a high school and one of my students said she had just bought a MAC and thinking I was helping her, I told her that instead of buying office for MAC, she could save money and buy IWORK.  Of course my students thought this was hysterical because apparently, they could put offie on my computer with their thumb drive, so the next day, I brought my computer to school and in minutes I had Word, Excel, etc all installed.  So now I am wondering if and how I can back them up (either on an external hardrive or after googling some info, apparently there is a;sp backup software that I must download (ie: Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper??) and one site says I can download this in lieu of an external hardrive or in addition to an external hardrive.  Can you help me out if possible?  I have never tried to communicate like this, so it's probably best to email me at scarletb1212@g**il.com.
Thanks in advance for any help!!

  • I can not get Time Machine to back up an external WD Passport 2 TB drive!  Has anyone else had this problem?  The drive is new and I was running Snow Leopard and upgraded to Lion and it still won't do it.  Time Machine backs up the internal drive fine.

I bought 2 2TB WD Passport Drives with the intention of housing my iTunes/iPhoto libraries off my older MacBook.  I have successfully transferred the Libraries to one and am using the other one for Time Machine.  In Snow Leopard I could back up my computer to Time Machine no problem but when I did not exclude the iTunes/iPhoto drive the back up fails.  Both drives have been reformatted, permissions repaired and checked in Disk Utility and one was replaced.  I have been to the Genius Bar now 5 times.  I have tried using USB drive and FireWire.  Both drives are recognized and are working properly otherwise regardless how they are connected.  Finally yesterday the Apple store installed Lion to see if that fixed the issue and it did not.  Time Machine successfully backed up a USB Flash drive, and today I will try an older external drive.  Any ideas on what else to try??? Do I have to resort to third party software like Carbon Copy Cloned to get this done?  Any ideas why this wont work?  I am using a FireWire converter but as I said, both drives are working normally otherwise (libraries working, time machine working for the computer's hard drive.  Any ideas would be appreciated!!?

Thanks so much but none of that helped.  It was driving me crazy because it would back up another external drive.  I just changed the name of the drive from iPhoto/iTunes Library to Media Libraries and IT WORKED!! I guess for some reason it didn't like the drive being called iPhoto or iTunes ???? I don't understand but I have tried so many solutions and exchanging things out but the name change did it????!!!
Thank you for your help and replying to this.  Guess I made my own issue!
