Is it OK to transport a PowerBook in a case (Timbuk 2) while its sleeping?

Is it OK to transport a PowerBook in a case (Timbuk 2) while its sleeping (when the lid is closed and the sleep light is blinking)?

Personally, I do it all the time, even between flights, matter of fact, I try to never turn it off, unless an update requires a reboot, I believe recovering from sleep it is far more gentler on the HDD than booting up.
The only caveat I take, is letting the PB resta few seconds, and double check that the HDD has stopped/parked, and that the blinken licht is blinking.

Read the user manual that came w/your computer.  Personally, I shut down when transporting.

  • I have a lazy Powerbook that often won't wake up from sleep!

I have read many posts about sleep issues and Powerbooks, but I have not seen one that matches my issue. Maybe someone can shed some light on what's going on.
I recently purchased a refurb PB G4 1.67 (about two-three months ago.) This week, I started to have a sleep problem. Specifically, it sleeps ok, but sometimes won't wake up. When this happens, it appears to be dead. There is no response from the keyboard (no light on Caps Lock or Num Lock, and no key triggers wake. Also, it should wake just from opening the lid, but it sometimes won't. When this happens, I have to do a hard restart, and then the computer works again.
I have noticed that this is more common when not plugged in, but it sometimes happens when I have the AC charger plugged in, also.
Sometimes, there are no problems, and the computer wakes normally.
I reset the PMU, but it did not resolve the issue.
Any ideas? Does this PB need to be brought into an Apple repair center, or is this a simple issue that can be resolved through tweaking a setting in the energy preference pane or something? It's only a minor annoyance, but I fear it's the sign of some impending catastrophic failure of some sort (which probably won't happen until the day after my warranty expires!)

This information seemed to keep working.
If you are still having problems, then please post back with your results.
For us and every machine patched has been fixed.
If you have the developer tools CD, then CHUD is an optional install.CHUD tools enables a system preference pane to disallow napping. However just ticking this box means every reboot, the problem will comeback.
The patch is a startup item which unchecked the processor nap feature at startup.
Once installed, this seems to resolves the issues. Power Manager can be set how you like, at least that is what we have observed.
    Symptoms :
    Machine will completely freeze....
    Clock Stops....
    ADB Keyboard May Power Down...
    USB Ports May Power Down...
Is this a power book only issue or is this issue simply more pronounced on the power books?
Any one else having these kind of issues?

  • PowerBook hangs after wake up from Safe/Deep Sleep after 10.4.4 Upddate

After updating to 10.4.4 (with Software Update) up from 10.3.4 (I think, whatever has been the latest) my PowerBook G4 (Dual Layer SuperDrive) hangs after waking up from safe/deep sleep. It does show the login screen (I am asked for a password after every wakeup) but neither the trackpad nor the internal keyboard or any other previously or newly attached USB input devices function. When I close the lid again it won't go back to sleep but turns off the screen backlight. If I reopen the lid, the display backlight will only go back on if I press the power key. However, all other input devices still don't work...
    Any ideas?
PowerBook G4 (Dual Layer SuperDrive)   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   1.5 GB Ram, 100GB 7200 RPM HD

Thanks, however this did not solve the probem. I did the following: Repair Permissions, install Combo Update, repair permissions again, wait until battery is depleted. Still, after waking it up from deep sleep (the sleep mode which kicks in when there is no battery power left at all) no input device works.
Another interesting detail is that the problem appears to be quite low-level, as the caps lock and num lock LEDs don't turn on when the respective mode is chosen...

  • PowerBook G4 15" 1.5GHz LCD thinks its a VGA Display

I have a PowerBook G4 15" 1.5GHz (the later BT2.0 one) which I bought with a display that I thought was bad because it was black with a thin horizontal blue line across it with a tiny bit of color. It turns out the LCD is fine--its resolution has been set to something like 14 x 854 pixels, hence what I saw was the entire displayed imaged compressed into this line. When connected/discronnected/reconnected up to an external monitor a few times, the LCD began to display at first the resolution of the external VGA monitor (1024 x 768). Then it began to display at 1280 x 960 but the Displays pane of Sys Prefs for the LCD now said "VGA display" and no where in the liist of resolutions is the correct one for this computer (the current 1280 x 960 looks fine until you realize the Dock is about an inch below the screen. How can I get this thing to remember its the Color LCD and not the VGA display it was once hooked up to?

Both the diversity and inverter board cables had gotten chewed up in previous disassemblies and enclosure had a big dent on the side pinching AirPort antenna. Once cables and enclosure were replaced, all was well.

  • Powerbook G4 17" hangs after display goes to sleep.

My 1.0 GHZ, 17" PB G4 has been locking up after the display sleeps. I do not have any other energy saver options selected. I can hear the fan(s) running, but she is totally unresponsive.
Using 10.5.5, 1 gig Apple RAM, airport is off.
I reset the PMU using the Shift-Control-Option-Power combo once.

    Stephen,
No help here, sorry, but you're not alone. My 1.33 17" has been having the same trouble for months. It was consistent a few months ago, but now it's only occasional. I have no idea what causes it and, like you, have gone through various attempts at fixes (PRAM, PMU, taking out RAM, etc.). I'm happy the problem has reduced itself, but I don't understand it. My only wild guess: I had a bad power adaptor which actually sometimes turned the computer totally off, a few weeks ago. (Spent who knows how many hours diagnosing that!) Since I replaced the adaptor I have not had the hang-after-sleep problem. Could these be related? Possibly. Wish I could help more.

  • Safe to transport during sleep

After reading a few posts about Sleep and Safe Sleep, I guess I still have a few questions.
    1) Is it safe to transport the MB when it is in regular Sleep Mode (mainly concerned with keeping the HD safe)
    2) Seeing as how the CPU is in a low power state during this time, is it safe to have the MB in a case without ventilation while in Sleep Mode (not wanting the MB to heat up due to lack of ventilation).

    I certainly
hope you mean "elaborate" rather than calling me an
    "illiterate"!!
Sleep deprivation is taking its toll
Thanks for responding. I definitely don't think the new mag locks on the MB will cause the latch to open accidentally under normal circumstances. I asked because I wasn't sure if there was some other issue that related to it awakening unexpectedly.

  • Do you use a screen protector? for powerbook.

Do you use a screen protector for your powerbooks? if so, what do you use?

No, I thought about it and decided that a screen protector was not something I needed. The reasons:
    * Key marks are generally finger oils, not physical scratches, and are therefore not permanent and can be removed using a damp cloth and gentle pressure. I have had my PowerBook for 2 years and this has held true. Various parts of my PowerBook have deteriorated far faster than the screen.
    * I didn't want to have this additional thing to have to remove after opening the lid and to replace before closing the lid. To me that's annoying and complicates the experience. I love being able to get going as soon as I open the lid.
    * I transport the PowerBook in such a way to avoid having other items in the bag compress the lid to the keyboard. If you carry a PowerBook in a backpack with 3 classes worth of textbooks and give the bag a hard landing on the library table with the PowerBook on the bottom, well, you might make some permanent marks that way.
    * When thinking about all the things I might want/need to buy with the amount of money the screen protector would cost, I decided the screen protector was way far down on the list.
Nothing personal to those who find screen protectors useful, but that's the reasoning I arrived at. My opinion is that screen protectors are one of the many accessories that profit from unfounded consumer anxieties.

  • Error While Transporting Smartforms from 832 client to 834 client

    Hi
I released my Smartform and Program...
and i told our basis ppl to Transport the Code from 832 to 834
but while transporting they are Getting this error
Transport Control Program tp ended with error code 0212
Errors:could not access file as supposed.
    My question is
Y they r getting this error?
is it link to Abap Program..
bcz they are telling that there is a wrong in my Program...
Bt my Program is working fine in 832 client...
Can any one help me on this?

    Smitha,
If you haven't done any changes in the program then there is no need but you are saying you have created error messages.Haven't you tagged the changes related to the smartform as well as the Error messages (ie message class) in the same request?
If you have different requests one for error message and one for Smartform, then see to that both are transported. If smartform is using any of those error messages then you need to move the request which has got error messages first and then only the smartform related requests should be moved otherwise it will give a dump becuase by the time Smartform is moved to 834 the error messages request is not yet moved.Hence sequnece while moving the transport requests is very important. It is always advisable to have all the changes related to a program in one request.
And added to that do check the link given by Gautam too.

  • My PowerBook Troubles or How I Learned To Always Purchase AppleCare

I bought my PowerBook G4 1.67GHz (W85...) on 13 June 2005. According to the production info I get in Temperature Monitor (http://www.bresink.com/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html) it was built on the "Week of 4/16/05 [at] Quanta Computer [in] Shanghai, China."
My experience with Apple hardware had been that it just won't die. All the systems I'd purchased had either been resold at a wonderful depreciation rate, handed down or grudgingly disposed of. I’ve even accepted some unwanted systems for fun projects and ended up having to find them a new home. Hence, although my PowerBook’s price tag had more in common with two-wheeled fun in the Florida sun than the previous computer systems I’d purchased, I decided the extra $300++ for AppleCare was unnecessary insurance.
About a year and a half after its purchase the screen started flashing a pixel-wide magenta line from top to bottom -- three inches from the left edge. I was hoping it was some freak software issue but eventually the line was permanent. When I searched the web for similar cases I found a handful of other users who, like me, assumed responsibility and were looking to replace the screen. More lines gradually appeared and I decided to wait until it got much worse before parting with the PowerBook and $600 for repairs.
At 11 lines I was ready to get the screen swapped and was going to have the optical drive upgraded on the same trip to put a positive spin on things. The week before I was to ship it away my PowerBook developed a case of narcolepsy. It’d go into sleep mode while I was working on it and sometimes I’d have to remove the battery and reset the power management unit to awaken it. I wondered if the deteriorating screen was causing some kind of hardware glitch. Unfortunately I found many others who experienced the same problem and it’d been tracked back to a faulty temperature sensor by the trackpad. This is when I learned of the Temperature Monitor software I mentioned above. With it I was able to determine that my trackpad heat sensor was responsible for sending emergency sleep signals to the system.
The symptoms of narcolepsy have since disappeared. The trackpad sensor has registered a static 48.2F for a couple of weeks. However, others have reported periods of remission before the narcolepsy reappears. This leaves me in a position where I can pay to have my screen replaced but I may once again lose all functionality to narcolepsy. Many customers with AppleCare who have been able to demonstrate the narcolepsy to service professionals have had their logic board -- possibly unnecessary -- and top case replaced. That is something I’m not willing to do on my dime because at that point I’ve practically rebuilt the PowerBook and hard drives are one of those things that don’t get better with time.
Now I find that the screen issues are also widespread and affect an even more specific subsection of PowerBooks. I’m not one to noisily demand a recall but my experiences with my PowerBook have left me wondering if I’m the stereotypical Mac user overpaying for commodity hardware. At this point I’d be happy to settle for being permitted to purchase AppleCare past the initial year of purchase.
I attempted as much yesterday by calling the number listed at http://www.apple.com/support/contact/phone_contacts.html. I spoke to a lady at AppleCare and asked to be added to any tally of PowerBook W8 screen problems. She was sympathetic and forwarded me to PowerBook support to see if there was anything that they could do for me. The technical support representative said her name was Alice or Alex and she was friendly and pleasant sounding. I gave her my details and mentioned that at the very least I’d like to be added to a list with a case number or be granted permission to retroactively purchase AppleCare. She gave me standard information on the validity of AppleCare purchased after the machine. I let her know I was aware that I was asking for special consideration. She told me that if she could put me on hold she would speak to someone with authority who could make that decision. I let her know how much I appreciated that and she told me I’d be on hold for five minutes.
After waiting on hold for five minutes the line went dead. When I called back I got the after business hours message. I’ll withhold any cynicism but I do intend to call back today and resume where I left off.

  • Ho to programmaticaly add objects to Transport Request

    Hi Experts,
I have a requirement programmatically add objects to a Transport request.
My requirement is , to modify/delete entries from DB table in the program and to create that object under a Transport request.  I could successfully add objects while creating entries to the DB table. I have some confusion when I'm to delete entries in  the DB table. How am I to achieve this. Is there some delete key/flag in the transport request which indicates that the entry is for deletion in the table.? When the TR is SAP craeted, both the creation and deletion TR appears the same.
I'm using FM 'TR_REQUEST_CHOICE' to add the objects.
    Thanks in advance ,
    Regards,
    Anjali

Thanks Neenu, My problem is not in adding objects to a TR.
Suppose I have a Config table, which I want to maintain by the use of an program. With this program I should be able to create and delete entries in the config table. Now While creation, i face no problem or confusion in adding the tasks to the Transport request. But if I'm to delete entries from the config table and maintain it in the transport request, how shall i do it? The TRs which SAP creates for addition of entries and deletion of entries appears same. I cannot spot any differnce in the tasks while creation of entries and deletion of entries from the DB table.

  • Transport datasource in r/3

    hello BW Experts,
I have created a generic datasource on a already existing table, there is not extra logic involved.
i followed the below procedure to transport the datasource
    1) se03 > change object directory entries > select object type R3TR OSOA Datasource active -- zgeneric_ds. and changed the tmp package to zbw package and assigned new request number.
now if i go to se09 > enter my id > i can see the object zgeneric_ds under my transport request.
is there any ohter object i need to include to complete the transport from dev to Q ?
    Please advice.
    Thanks,
    BWer

i actually transported only the ds r3tr osoa type ofjbect datasource active -- zgeneric
when i go to BWQ > rso2 > double click the zgeneric ds > try to open the extracts structure it has error 'extract structure ZOXR3D0389 is invalid'
and when i try to transport this structure ZOXR3D0389
se11 > ZOXR3D0389 > object directory entry > its $tmp > i am changing to zbw, it does not let me change, it gives a error message 'You have no authorization for MODIFY (authorization object S_DEVELOP)'
    please suggest.
    Thanks,
    BWer
