Is it ok to use 1GB + 256MB RAM in Satellite P25-s607
I have a Satellite P25-s607, and I wanted to know the following:
1) if it's ok to install only a single 1GB stick of RAM next to a 256MB stick? Will I lose any performance speed doing this versus 2 1GB sticks (assuming I use under 1GB of RAM at most times)? Sounds like it will not have a performance hit since this model doesn't support dual-channel memory (according to crucial.com)
2) I assume this is the correct (best) module to use: [1GB, 200-pin SODIMM, DDR PC2700|http://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=3B53A794A5CA7304] with specs:
# Module Size: 1GB
# Package: 200-pin SODIMM
# Feature: DDR PC2700
# Specs: DDR PC2700 CL=2.5 Unbuffered NON-ECC DDR333 2.5V 128Meg x 64
3) Is there any reason to install BIOS 2.10? It is listed under the toshiba support site under P25-S607-related, but the only change it states is: "Added support for the Pentium 4 D1 stepping CPU"
4) Is it possible to install a better CPU? I assume not...
5) What about graphics card (it came with NVIDIA® GeForce? FX Go5200 graphics controller; 64MB DDR external video memory)? Also I assume not...
Thanks for any help!!
Hi
Regarding the question number:
1) The notebook can be upgraded up to 2GB RAM and therefore you can use one 1GB RAM and one 256MB module. But its always better if you would use the identical memory modules. Its better for performance but I doubt you will notice an performance boost.
2) Yes, you have to use the 200-pin SODIMM, DDR PC2700 modules
3) If your notebook runs trouble free then I dont see any reasons for a BIOS update
4) Usually its not advisable to upgrade the CPU due to a higher heat dissipation and overheating risks due to a higher CPU performance
5) No, this is definitely not possible because the GPU is fixed on the board

Anyone any ideas on the error message?
Once it's poped, you can't get rid of it, it gives you an 'Ok' option, but if you press it, it just loads again, and you can't press the 'x' or it just comes back.
In order to get Skype working again I have to 'End Process' in task manager (Where I see it using 1GB Ram), and then re-start skype and it's fine. Please, run the DirectX diagnostics tool.
Go to Windows Start and in the Run box type dxdiag.exe and press the OK button. This will start the DirectX diagnostics program. Run this diagnostics and save the results to a file. Please, attach this file to your post.
Be aware that you will have to zip this file before attaching it here. -
Poor OEL5-3 performance when using over 1Gb of RAM
Hi, I have a Linux distribution ( Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.3 i.e. Redhat ) that I have installed. It works fine when I used 2*512Mb dimms or replace them with a single 1Gb dimm. However when I try to go above 1 Gb the bootup and general performance deteriorates badly. The BIOS picks up the memory changes ok and I am using the same type of memory sticks. It makes no difference if I load a single memory channel with the 2 sticks or balance the sticks over the 2 channels - I still get poor performance. When I return to 1Gb of RAM performance is great
In terms of install I just followed the Oracle Release note and Readme on the DVD itself. To be honest they are incredibly basic. There does not appear to be any specific OEL 5-3 installation manual on Technet. I simply followed the prompts on scereen and choose a default install
I have seen quite a few hits concerning problems with performance over 1Gb for Linux such as having to enable Highmem support in the kernel - however I have not seen any instruction how to check or do this - any ideas ?jimthompson wrote:

Your two 512M sticks are undoubtably well matched and live comfortably together. Hopefully they did actually use dual channel mode.
Your 1G lives well on its own as well
However for the greater than 1G, ie 1G + 0.5G you may be using 2 sticks that do not live well together and are causing isses with delayed response. (At worst can only 0.5G is being recognised - (use grep MemTotal /proc/meminfo if necessary to check) ). In general issues seem better with DDR2 than with earlier memory in this regard. I suppose timing with memtest86 might be an interesting metric. I must admit myself i'd prefer to use 1g+1g or even 2g + 2g (i know on 32bit I might not see it all) rather than 1g+2g or 1g+0.5g.
Anyway what I am trying to say is that hardware should not be eliminated as a possible cause at this stage.

I have 256mb RAM, it is too slown as you can Imagine...I didn't know ...
1) how much ram does the operating sistem that came with the mac take...?
2) I would like to change it to more ram:
a) can I ad ram to my 256 or do I have to get a new one of 512 or 1gb?
b)how much would it cost me512or 1gb?
c)can I order it in the apple store and put it in myself? (PS: I don't care if that takes me off the one year garncy because I bought it in the US and I live in Italy)
thank you.Tiger doesn't require a specific amount of RAM - it generally tailors use to the amount available. The less RAM installed in the system the more it uses virutal memory, an area of the hard driver set aside for 'pages' that MacOS moves from real RAM to virtual store and then back again. Since access to data on the hard drive is slower than from memory, this means that the less RAM the system has installed, the slower it will tend to run because more of what MacOS needs will come from paged store on the drive than from RAM.
How much memory you need depends on what you're doing. Most users find 512Mb entirely satisfactory, but if you're using applications such as Photoshop, more would certainly be better.
You can't 'add' more memory - the mini has only one RAM slot, which means that the stick you have in there at present will need to be removed and replaced.
Since you're happy to do the RAM install yourself, you might try looking at www.crucial.com or www.newegg.com for RAM prices - from such sources a 1Gb stick would cost little more than an Apple-sourced 512Mb module. Just make sure that whatever supplier you buy from will exchange the RAM if you have any problems with it. -
Running iTunes7 on a 800Mhz iMac G4 (256mb Ram)
Hi,
i have an iMac G4 Flat panel (800Mhz-256mb Ram) and after hearing some people complaining on these boards of not being able to run iTunes7 properly on macs with a similar spec as mine i have decided for the time being not to upgrade from iTunes6.
Is there anyone on here who is running iTunes7 successfully with less than a 1Ghz. What limitations can i expect from iTunes7 on my iMac.
ThanksI'm sure you will benefit by adding more RAM.
It will decrease disk access, which slows down the system.
About Cover Flow:
The first time I used it, it behaved rather slow and jerky.
Of course iTunes had to get all the artwork from the song files, which meant a lot of disk activity.
iTunes then stores the albumart in .itc files in ./Users/Username/Music/iTunes/album artwork/Local.
I guess this is done for faster access of the pictures.
The next time, I slowly flipped through Cover Flow to enable iTunes to pick up all artwork.
This morning, when I ran iTunes, and browsed through Cover Flow, it behaved somehow jerky (a lot of disk access), but after that it worked rather smooth.
I could only hear occasional disk access, so iTunes must have stored most pictures in RAM.
One more thing. I recently replaced the HD by a larger and faster one (200 GB Maxtor) which also speeds things up (reading/writing at least twice as fast than the 'old' drive). That also helps a bit.
Long story short:
Add more RAM. I'm sure you will not be disappointed by that investment.

Slow iMac, kernel_task using 1GB memory
My iMac has been running slower and slower over the past year or so. The problem seems to come and go, but I have been noticing increasing tendency for applications to hang, or to get stuck for minutes with spinning beach balls. I've been carrying forward software and installations going all the way back to OS X 10.0 (from previous machines) and I probably have made some poor choices regarding installing third-party software in the past.
I've seen some very helpful advice in this forum given to others (for example, here) so I thought I would post my problem here.
I've been watching Activity Monitor, and the only thing I've noticed that seems consistently out of place is that kernel_task is using about 1GB of RAM. (It was using about 2GB of RAM until I uninstalled Virtual Box, which clearly was a big part of my problems).
I am fully backed up redundantly (locally via Time Machine and remotely via BackBlaze). I'm holding off upgrading to Yosemite until I can clean this issue up (unless you think it would help).
Below you will find posted two diagnostic reports. The first is EtreCheck, followed by the results of the Terminal script posted by Linc Davis in this thread
I hope that's sufficient to help the geniuses reading this forum give me some advice. Thank you in advance for your help.

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear and again when you log in. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don’t do them all at once.

Slow Mac After Mavericks
Things you can do to resolve slowdowns see post by Kappy -
I was wondering If I can upgrade to Mavericks if I have MOST of the requirements available..... The only thing I need to do is upgrade the ram. I currently have 1GB of Ram
Or MUST I upgrade the ram???????And check the Mavericks requirements again. A MacBook that shipped with only 1 Gig of RAM is probably too old for use with Mavericks. As I believe that all of the qualifying MacBooks shipped with a minimum of 2 Gigs RAM.
The minimum requirement for the MocBook is:
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
Note: It always helps to mention your exact Mac model when posting a question in the forums. -
Running Appserver 9.1 with 256mb ram?
Hi there,
i tried to install the Appserver 9.1 on a machine with only 256mb ram. I think thats the cause why starting the server results in:
Error occurred during initialization of VM
Could not reserve enough space for object heap
Could not create the Java virtual machine. Is there somewhere an option to set the heapsize down, so that the server can start?
(I know that the minimum requirement is 512mb ram, but performance doesn't matter in this case)
Bye
schuhu
Edited by: schuhu on Nov 4, 2007 8:53 AMYou will need an OS 9.1 or higher full installer CD. You may find them on eBay or at FastMac.com. Be sure to get a full retail installer CD, not an upgrade disc.
You can install OS 9 directly on the hard drive without disturbing your OS X installation. Just be careful to avoid any alerts from the installer asking to format or check the hard drive. If you see such alerts (and you will) during installation simply skip or cancel them.
Now, your hard drive must have been formatted with the Install Mac OS Drivers option checked when you partitioned the drive if you want to boot OS 9 directly. This is not required to use Classic from OS X. -
Photoshop isn't using all the ram that I have.
I recently installed 8gb of RAM into my Macbook Pro so i could increase the performance of Photoshop. Before using Photoshop, I increased the the "memory usage" slider up to 75% but after I do that, its only using 1gb worth of RAM. Am I doing something wrong?..I would appreciate of someone could help me out.
Did you double-check that you have not set it to run in 32bits mode? (right-click on the Photoshop CS5.app icon, select Get Info, and see if start in 32 bits mode is not checked.) http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/828/cpsid_82824.html

I was planning on buying a MacBook with the SuperDrive and a 2.0GHz. Is 1GB of RAM enough to run photoshop, dreamweaver, and flash, beacuse if I only get 1G of RAM then I can upgrade the hard drive to 100GB. I plan on using Boot Camp also.
This will be my first mac.
Windows XP Slow CeleronBut don't forget that the MacBook has integrated graphics, which siphons off of the main ram instead of providing its own.
I have 1GB, and my MacBook usually only has a couple of MB free, even when only running basic applications. You should also monitor your page ins/outs in Activity Monitor. If the number of outs rises at a rate that you find uncomfortable, you should probably upgrade.
Crucial has great, and usually cheap, ram, but right now their 2GB MacBook kit is priced at a ridiculous $417 (http://tinyurl.com/ymbyq7). I just bought a 2GB kit from Other World Computing (http://tinyurl.com/mo5bz), and I'm waiting for it to come in the mail.

FF using too much RAM and getting slow
FF is using too much RAM

updated to the beta version and solved it -
Dashboard using too much ram memory
Whenever I use the dashboard, after a couple of minutes it starts consuming more than 1GB of RAM memory, so that it doesn't let me work. I have to force quit the Dashboard... The mac is almost new. Any solution?
I have tried to analize better what happens. In the dashboard I only have a calendar, a calculator, a clock and one postit (but there is nothing writen on it). If I use something in the dashboard, for example, the calculator, and I do some multiplications, after a couple of minutes the use of memory of the dashboard starts to increase. I closed any other program and in some minutes I have sen how it increased until I stopped the process when it was using more than 2GB! (you can see it in the picture). It's very strange! (Thank you very much for your help!)

I have a Mac OSX Version 10.5.8 When I put in my disc to upgrade to snow leopard version 10.6.3 it tells me I need atleast 1gb of ram memory to download. what can I do
Your iMac can take a total of 2 GBs of RAM Max.
Maximum Memory
2.0 GB
Memory Slots
2 - 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM
You will be able to install OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and it will run, but you may not be happy with the performance overall.
OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and later OS X versions use more and more CPU, GPU and RAM resources.
OS X 10.6, by itself, will use between 2-4 GBs of RAM to run quickly, smoothly and efficiently.
Start running additonal applications and your iMac is going to struggle.
Just fair warning if you notice that your iMac is running slower after installing OS X 10.6.
Good Luck! -
1gb ddr ram working at 512mb ram?
Hi!!
I am just wondering what my problem is. I have 2800+ athlon xp on a kt3 ultra2 motherboard. I am using 1gb Simtec ddr sdram 2700 but when I go to System in controlo panel, it says that I have 512mb ram. My graphics card is geforce 5200 with 128mb.Quote
I have windows xp service pack 2. I have got the ram from simmtec or simtec... On the program called cpuz, it says the ram is 1024mb 2700 ram... but on system, it says its working at 512mb. the ratio for the ram is 1:1 and i dont knbow how to change it?
Which "system"? What does the screen read during POST (just after switching on but before the OS loads)? -
[845 Series] Adding 1gb of Ram to the MSI 6507 MB.
I have just attempted to add 1gb of ram (PC2100 DDR 266MHz CL2.5) to my MS6507 MB. When I go to power up my system nothing happens, the system only starts working again when I remove the new stick of ram. I have a 512mb stick in the other slot.
I have checked and the MB supports up to 2GB of ram. Any ideas why this is not being picked up??I have tried the 1gb stick in both slots. SPD is set in the bios, I had previously been using 512 and 256 sticks in the two slots. Basically trying to find out if I have been sold a faulty stick of ram or if its not compatible with my MB (MS-6507). I have checked the MB spec and it says it can take up to 2GB of ram so am pretty sure that compatibility is not the issue??
