Is it OK to use Cool'n'Quiet in games?

Is it OK to use the automatic processor voltage/clock control while playing games?
Will I have pauses or hiccups when the clock changes?
Another question: is there any way to PREVENT the automatic clock control from going all the way to the max multiplier? That's because I'm running 230x10, and I do not want to reach 230x11.
Thanks.

Syar2003,
Great job!! This tools really looks like a superior replacement for AMD's cnq driver (even though it's not a device driver...how odd).
It seems to work like this: you set min and max multipliers (min is usually 5 for a newcastle, but you can change it to 4 like the claws to save a bit more power while just web browsing.  Like syar2003 said, max is respected: if you set 10x max on a newcastle 3200+, it won't jack it up to 11x against your wishes, the way "standard" cool and quiet does.) So in other words, it seems to work as advertised.  Another interesting thing is that it seems to use every multiplier (except half multipliers) between the min and max that you specify. For example if you specify a min of 4 and a max of 11, you'll also see 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10, unlike standard cool and quiet (which gives me just 5, 9, 10, and 11). Not necessary perhaps, but a nice feature anyway.
The tool does not give you full control over voltages. When you pick the min and max multipliers, you also pick min and max voltages, but the voltages for the in-between multipliers are chosen algorithmically by the tool, like it or not. Fortunately, it seems to do a reasonable job at picking voltages for those intermediate steps.  Here are some examples from a quick first run:
Setting multiplier range from 4 to 11, voltage from 1.1 to 1.5:
4x: 1.1V
5x: 1.15V
6x: 1.225V
7x: 1.275V
8x: 1.325V
9x: 1.375V
10x: 1.450V
11x: 1.5V
So it seems to have chosen more or less reasonable voltages for 5 thru 10...still it might be nice if you could override.
Setting multiplier range from 5 to 10, voltage from 1.1 to 1.5, we see some (expected) differences among the intermediate multipliers:
5x: 1.1V
6x: 1.175V
7x: 1.25V
8x: 1.35V
9x: 1.425V
10x: 1.5V
This could be a setting to try with, for example, an HTT of 220, because if you add 10% to all of the speeds, you end up with speed & voltage combinations not too far apart from the previous case, which we know is safe. Will try that later...
To try (haven't gotten to it yet):
-- In MSI BIOS 1.55+, you specify cpu voltage with a number (like 1.5V) and with a fudge factor percent (0%, 3.3%, 5%, 8.3%, 10%). Clearly when using RM1.2, the first number is ignored and replaced with your RM1.2 settings, as it should be. (Haven't tried it, but it would make sense.) But we would like the fudge factor percent to be respected by the RM1.2 tool. Is it, or does the fudge percentage get silently ignored when using RM1.2? Haven't tried yet. If it doesn't work, then there won't be a way to apply good voltages.

  • Cool and Quiet ok to use on NF980-G65 / 965 CPU?

    Hi,
I'm wondering if it's safe to use the cool and quiet option in the bios on the NF980-G65 motherboard with the AMD 965 Black Edition CPU.
I had the MSI overclocking center open (I'm not overclocking just monitoring the temperatures) and heard this faint siren sound, thought it was one of my neighbors car alarms.  Once I discovered that it was coming from my computer I opened HWMonitor and noted that the CPU fan was only running at 3%, and I guess that's lower than what ever is configured in the MSI Overclocking center since the alarm noise was coming from the overclocking center.
The CPU was still in the safe zone at about 54°c at the time that the CPU fan was down running at 3%, my guess was due to cool and quiet taking over maybe.
I've read that this CPU can go pretty high in temps but of course we should try to keep it as cool as possible so this leaves me baffled about the cool and quiet (if that's what causes it) to drop the CPU fan down to about 1680RPM since the temps seem like they would have kept rising if the fan doesn't speed up.
Anyway, is it safe to use Cool and Quiet on this mainboard with this CPU?

Unfortunately, I live in a 40+ year old house, in the desert, where our now summer month temps are into the 3 digit marks (100-121°f) and this house doesn't have insulation in the walls so the temps inside are only maintained at 76°f and the computer room is a bit hotter than that even with the central air going and an additional window a/c unit in the computer room.
I am using the Thermaltake Element G box which has a huge fan on the side door, a very large fan on the front, an equally large fan to exhaust on the back, an large fan again on the top of the case and finally, 2 60mm fans on the back to exhaust near the video cards and so my CPU runs probably warmer than the average person that is able to keep their rooms down to 65°f unfortunately.
Anyway, the cool and quiet used to be turned off and I had the other options on so that it would try to maintain the CPU at 45°c which it's perfectly capable of doing when I'm not playing games, and of course it's still capable fo keeping it under 60°c when playing games, and most of the time the temps dont' get above 57°c when playing demanding games but it concerns me that the CPU fan would drop to only 3% using cool and quiet and I'll likely turn it off again but I'm still curious if there is any known issues with running cool and quiet on this mainboard and CPU.
    Thanks for the reply

  • Is Cool 'n Quiet stable?

    I run a K8N Neo2 Platinum (MS-7025) with 1.4 bios, 3800+ NewCastle CPU and Kingston HyperX 400MHz memory.
The setup works like a charm, but when I enable "Cool 'n Quiet" it seems to cause lock-ups and reboots.
The system is NOT overclocked, everything is set to AUTO in BIOS, except for memory which has been set to a bit slower settings than SPD reports.
When I have Core Center open on screen to watch what Cool 'n Quiet does, it seems like most of the time it reports 200MHz x 5.0 at idle, but when I start up an application, it can peak to 380MHz x 12 ?
Neither memory nor CPU should be able to handle that kind of FSB clock, so is it a system bug that the clock peaks at way above 200MHz?  I really don't DARE to use "Cool 'n Quiet" for that reason, I need a stable system that doesn't hang or reboot in the middle of working.
    Later,
    Anders.

    Andres,
I'm not getting the BSODs but the fluctuations do have me concerned. This thread is interesting. Blue screen caused by Vcore flucuations?
Raising the Vcore from 1.50 to 1.525 or 1.55 does seem to help stabilize my system but the CPU temp goes up. I've got a Thermalright XP-90 on the way so heat shouldn't be a problem.
    ===============================================
    What I've found so far...
Cool & Quiet disabled in the BIOS.
    Start CoreCenter running.
    Start Speedfan running.
    Start WCPUCLK
Put a full load on the CPU. (seti@home)
Just moving the mouse around causes a few alarming fluctuations seen in CoreCenter.
WCPUCLK doesn't register the fluctuations but I'm not getting BSODs.
    1) Open CC. Click on CoreCenter , the program title button.
    2) Click User
    3) Set the fans on high
    4) Click Apply.
Now the Vcore and FSB stabilize.
It appears that C & Q is turned off.

It looks like what the other guys have been saying...Don't use CoreCenter except as a reference to help set up other programs like MBM and SpeedFan. Hmmm...RightMarks RM clock also sounds interesting.
Having a quieter system with Cool & Quiet turned on in the BIOS is nice. I'll have to do more testing to see if its stable. If C & Q is still causing instability after raising the CPU VID to 1.525 in the BIOS...I'll leave it off...Cie La Vie.

  • Cool and Quiet on K8T Neo2-F V2.0

    I have been playing a bit with a K8T Neo2-F V2.0 (s939) and a Winchester 3200+.
There seem to be a problem with the CPU fan control while using Cool and Quiet.
BIOS is v3.6, os WINXP SP3, latest AMD proc driver installed.
CnQ enabled in BIOS, Minimal power management in power options.
The C'nQ itself works fine, but the fan blowing full blast 3300rpm all times.
Is this a known problem? CnQ work fine in kubuntu 64-bit as well but no fan slowdown.
Corecenter does not support this board.
Tried speedfan, but on a brief test could not get it control the fan, unless I did something wrong.

This board has no option for Smartfan in BIOS.
From the manual, whatever it means for this board(seem like its just copied from a more feature rich board manual):
"If the mainboard has a System Hardware
Monitor chipset on-board, you must use a specially designed fan with speed sensor to take
advantage of the CPU fan control."
Currently using the stock HS& fan. Need to find a working solution for fan control.

  • Cool 'n Quiet and Gaming?

I installed the required AMD Processor driver and set the XP power setting to minimal power usage and Cool 'n Quiet immediately kicked in after a reboot.  My CPU now runs at a steady 1000MHz and about 5-7C cooler
Is there any way to configure this such that it doesn't kick in until after a certain period of low CPU activity?  While playing FarCry I noticed quite a bit of sluggishness and lag with this enabled.  It seems that Cool 'n Quiet works TOO well because the CPU actually bogs down while it should be mostly pinned at 2GHz
It's easy to fix by putting the power setting back to Desktop where the CPU always runs at 2GHz but I like the idea of giving the CPU a breather and cool-down when I walk away from the machine and am only doing P2P sharing or whatever.
    Thanks!
    John

I play battlefield vietnam.  After I installed the driver and started using cool and quiet I noticed a big drop in temps.  MHZ drop to 800 at idle. Really quite cool like 38`.  Very impressive.
I havn't noticed any degradation in my game play.  One thing I have done....just to "check" to see what my cpu was doing while running my game:
During gameplay I can hit ALT-TAB.  Then I goto start, control panel, system and see how many mhz my system is cranking.  It always shows 2000 for me, as it should while running and intense game.  Then i can just click on the bfvietnam bar on the taskbar to jump back into my game where I left off.

  • Cool n´ Quiet...does it locks your pc?

I´ve tried to run CnQ because I think it´s a really good idea for power savings.
I had a PSU with 18A on the 12 Volt Rail so I changed to an Enermax hoping that was it......well it wasn´t ... my computer just freezes..... I have de 1.5 bios..and a K8T Neo FSR.....
Can someone help me find the source of the lock ups??
Also I´m not running Core Center coz I get IE errors.....(or at least I think that was the source of them)....
    Thanks in advance.
    Andrés.

Well I've got some news....I still can't use Cool n' Quiet  but....
I've OC'd the FSB to 210Mhz so I tought I'd give it a try....recently I've been using Mozilla firefox......and I was able to use CnQ without any locks up for a couple of days....but then something happened.....my screen started to go blank for 2 secs or so and then the image would go back.... so I tought maybe was a Firefox bug or something....so went to IE back again (really sad I might add).... and then I got a lock up...
The issue of the image going and comming maybe is part of my partially destroyed video card so I can't tell till I get a new one.....but It seems that if you don't use IE (and you should'nt  ) there's a good chance you won't get lock ups....
I hope someone can test this and comment,
    see ya
PS. Give a try to firefox..it's really good....

  • Cool'n'Quiet not working like it should!

Well, I decided to try Cool'n'Quiet to see how much cooler and quieter my system would get. So I enabled it in BIOS and set Windows power management to Minimal, and watched the clock speed and voltage go down as the CPU load went down.
It stopped at about 1.3v and 1800 Mhz. It won't go any further! My friend practically has the same setup except he uses a 3000+ ClawHammer, and his clock speed and voltage decreases much more than mine. I've read that the clock speed should hit 1000 Mhz.
To answer some possible questions, yes, I have installed the latest AMD processor driver and yes, the CPU load is under 10% when I'm checking.
    Thanks in advance!

If you install the latest beta BIOS 1.2B12, you will see that CnQ can drop the multiplier down to 5.   But some people have seen instability with that BIOS.  I have not.

  • How to disable Cool N Quiet driver when it isnt in the bios or registry for Roxio game capture?

    1. HP G60-120 US Notebook PC
    2. Windows 7 32-bit
    3. No error messages
    4. No changes before issue occured.
I was told by Roxio (company of the capture card I bought to record gameplay on my Xbox) to call HP and get my Cool N Quiet driver disabled after I updated my other drivers and still had problems with my capture card. Can somebody tell me where to find it other than in the registry and bios because it is NOT in there and I have looked already more than 5 times or if you know where I can get it remotely disabled. HP cannot remotely disable it because I just talked to them and they don't have the power to do that.

No, Corecenter is almost useless and is NOT needed to "activate" Cool n Quiet.  The best it can do is tell you fan speed and temps, and even that is questionable.  It will also tell you clock speed but you can get that from right clicking "My Computer" choose Properties, go to General tab, note mhz displayed there.  If it is about half of full clock speed for your CPU, then CnQ is working right.  If it shows full clock speed, then CoolnQuiet is NOT working and you need to re-read Mr. Woo's original post which gives details about how to enable it.
Next, about fan speed.  You have to understand that CnQ does not have anything to do with fan speed directly. Unless you have fan speed control disabled in BIOS, then your fan is going to control as you described whether you have CnQ enabled or not. In BIOS, in the H/W Monitor section, there is a place to enable or disable fan speed control - it's called CPU Smart Temperature Monitor or something like that.
As long as it is enabled and your fan is compatible and hooked up right, the fan will ramp up and down to control temperature. This is independent of CnQ.  And it is independent of Corecenter.  Disable CnQ and shutdown CoreCenter, the mobo still controls fan speed.

  • AMD cool n quiet

Can I get some BIOS with AMD Cool n Quiet option enabled?
I get irritate when my A8 5550m cant get higher than 2.1GHz when the CPU can handle even 3.1GHz. I can fix this with restarting only, and it get back to 2.1GHz when I power on my laptop
    G405s-7577 users. Thanks.
nb. Sorry for my bad english

64 bit I hope. Go into the device manager and look for the processor. Right click on the processor and choose properties then driver, then driver details. It should say amd processor rather than generic processor. The driver name should have amd in it (amdk8.sys) and not just processor.sys or something generic. For mobile processors the correct name is PowerNow! not Cool 'n Quiet although I cannot recall if the zv5000z actually uses a mobile processor or a desktop processor. I believe it is mobile.

  • SB Audigy 2 ZS and AMD's Cool'n'Quiet = Incompatib

Hello! Is anyone using these two combines on their machines? If so, then do you have any problems like crashes, blue screens, etc. especially after your computer speeds up overnight of idleness/long slow downs? I seem to have them in Windows XP Pro. SP2 with all updates, latest non-beta Audigy 2 ZS driver, etc. No problems if I disable AMD's Cool'n'Quiet in CMOS. Thank you in advance.

Just for kicks, I decided to install this card on a Dell that I happen to have around.. the specs are above and beyond the configuration of my regular computer (whose specs are above and beyond the specs listed for the Audigy 2 ZS Platinum).. and I am unhappy to report that the same freezing problems occur. I am still unable to use any web update features for ANY of my software, and I am still unable to record in 24 bit audio.

After enabling AMD Cool'n'Quiet on my Vista 64 computer ([url="http://forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board/message?board.id=Vista&message.id=2093">see this thread[/url]), I noticed that I had crackling in my audio from my Creative X-Fi. I am running MSI K8N Neo Platinum/SLI 64FX? with 4gbram?I have never really used the cool n quiet utility becasue it always seemed to make the motherboard fans whine somewhat, for this purpose I enabled and disabled cool n quiet several times, and I honestly didnt hear any difference in sound, albeit the fan whinning was there. I dont know if this is conected or not, its possible cool N quiet creates other noise as well. I never did like the util. But, it might stand to reason that if the utility was creating voltage or signal variations it could cause the rice krispies syndrome so many people have been talking about. Have to get some more feedback on this issue.

  • 785GTM-E45 - Cannot Get Cool N Quiet to work

So ive been in and out of the Overclock (the switches on the motherboard its self) and Cool N Quiet doesnt seem to be throttling the CPU and voltage at all when the computer is idling. Overclocked or stock clocks, it doesnt adjust anything.  Im using CPUID to watch the speed and voltages.
Im using Windows XP 64bit with a Athlon II x 4 630. The power options set to "Minimal Power Management"
I also have double checked the bios to make sure it isnt Auto, but instead "enabled"
I tried updating the cool n quiet utility but it says im already up to date. I have already updated the bios as well.
Any suggestions to get this work properly?

All that tree hugging hippy green-earth power saving junk just adds variables to an already complicated and delicate situation in a well OC'd machine.  C&Q and related 'wares have never added anything to stability and have often been known to detract from it.  Serious overclocking is virtually the opposite of saving power.  Why risk stability (or run at lower speeds) to satisfy your need to be green?  Just turn the machine off when you aren't using it.
You guys...  I really dont care about thread battles.  Although I do agree, some people could just simply turn off the rig sometimes but I have an issue thats probably easy to fix.   I've had an overclocked E5200 to 3.5ghz before and what ever the heck Intel calls their version of Cool N Quiet; it was working perfectly fine.  I also had an 3800x2 that was able to throttle down on a Via chipset motherboard!
So, im just tryin to satisfy my self with overclocking and have Cool N Quiet at the same time. If Asus and Via can do it, I need to figure out why this 785gt isnt doing it properly.      :D

  • K8T Neo FIS2R (MS6702) cool n quiet problem

Hi.  I have an AMD64 3000 cpu installed.  The cool n quiet variable frequency is not functioning anymore.  Core Center reports it at 2000mhz all the time.  As a result, it is running hotter than normal and is not as quiet.  I tried the latest bios (ami v2.2), the latest amd64 driver and the latest core center.  The system did not like the newest amd64 driver (shutdown just as windows finished loading) so I went back to the previous versions of everything.  It did work at one time but something must have changed.
    System Specs:
    K8T Neo FIS2R (MS-6702)
    AMD64 3000 socket 754 (clawhammer or newcastle I think)
    chipset K8T800
    bios AMI v1.9
    amd64 driver v1.2.2
    Core Center v1.5.5.0
cool n quiet enabled in bios setup
    dynamic overclocking disabled
    Thanks for any input
    Pete

Ok, this is nuts.  I think its time to clear the cmos.  I'm now using speedfan and even with the max speed setting for the cpu fan at 1% (one percent), the cpu fan runs at around 3800.  Then it drops to zero when the set cpu temp is reached (40c).  There's no in between.  When I start the system, its max'd at around 4400.  I pulled the fan and heatsink to clean them last weekend and it seems that's when all this started.  Perhaps something went awry when I disconnected and reconnected the fan to the board.  The bios version, the amd driver, and the core center version are now all the same as before I pulled the fan.  I'm clearing the cmos.

  • K8n neo bios 1.4 temps and cool n quiet

    Hi,
I recently flashed to bios 1.4 and it has been fine thus far.  However I have two issues that may be related to this new bios.
Windows XP utilties (mbm, sandra, speedfan, even corecell) all report my temps to be in the mid 30 degrees C, however the bios reports them as 45 degrees, which should I trust?
Also I think I've gotten half of cool n quiet working, vcore is down when cpu is not doing intensive work and so is the multiplier, making it run approx 1 GHz give or take.  However, I believe that my AMD stock fan always spins around the same speed (approx 3200 rpm), regardless whether the cpu is doing intensive work or idles, is something wrong?  I have the cool, wheres the quiet where my fan is supposed to slow down?
    Any help is appreciated!

well the temperature in bios is very likely to to be above of that in windows, because cool n quiet doesnt work in bios and processor runs at normal frequencies there. The fan speed problem can be either of two things i know, first is that you haven't enabled smart cpu fan in bios and other is if you go to standby and then resume, it seems that cool n quiet works after it but mobo doesn't control the fan speed after standby. These are just some things i have noticed. The bios 1.4 is very good btw (atleast for normal use, i dont't overclock so no idea about that).
