Mac Mini runs SOOO SLOW. Wheel of Death spins all the time. Should I reload all the software?
I own four Macs, which includes three laptops and a Mac Mini. One laptop uses Mavericks, the other two laptops are Lions. They ALL work GREAT at a quick speed. The Mini, on the same wireless, runs soooo much slower, I wonder if there's a virus on it. The wheel of death is constantly spinning every time I click anywhere, i.e. Opening a new program, new file, or surfing the net. SOMETIMES FOR 30 SECONDS +. Nothing is quick. I took it to the Apple store, and they said there's plenty of space on it. It's OS X Lion 10.7.5. 11 G63. I noticed if I shut it down and restart it, it works better with less tabs open in Google Chrome.
I really don't know anything about computers. I have Word and Excel loaded on it. Should I delete the hard drive and start all over? Could there be a virus on it? I don't know where the software is for the Microsoft product... If I wrote down the serial numbers of Word and Excel, is that enough to reload it?

Chance of a virus is slim, macs are quite good at taking care of themselves, and most anti-virus software will slow down your computer and not really protect you at all, so stay away from that stuff.

You have a lot of things going on here...you are keeping the Air plugged in all the time, you should run on the battery periodically to give it some exercise, you are keeping it on all the time which may be keeping it under constant or near constant load, and you are doing all of that to download pirated content, for which you will get no help on here.

Leaving the printer on all the time
I just purchased a C309g Photosmart Premium AIO printer. I did a search but couldn't find an answer. Is it ok to leave my printer on all the time, or should it be turned off? Thanks in advance.
It should't hurt anything, Just use a small amount of electricity . My Piece of junk "all in one" wont even turn off - I have to unplug it, so it stays on all the time!

When I enter a new event on iCal with the time, it leaves the time off of the Monthly view and in order for me to glance at the times of the day's events I have to click on each event or go into the event and edit it again putting the time on, for it to show. Is there a way to get it to show without doing this?

I have a fourth generation ipod. when I plug it into my windows 7 pc at work, the battery charge icon appears. when i plug the same ipod into my windows 7 pc at home, no battery charging icon appears. any way to get it to show?
Are you plugging the iPod into a high powered USB 2.0 port at home? Do you have any other devices that are connected via USB on your PC at home?
I assume you are using the same cable you used to plug the Shuffle in at work?

I have a first generation time capsule running 802.11n (b/g compatable) and the airport expresse's are the newer 5ghz models. I have 3 airport express's and I have the range that I need. I can run the time capsule using 802.11n 5ghz, but I loose the range and can't connect to all of the airport express's. My computers and mobile devices run 802.11n. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to increase the network speed. Would the new airport extreme fix the problem?
Thank youUnfortunately, you are experiencing one of the downsides to 5 GHz. That's because the higher frequency 5 GHz signals are much weaker than 2.4 GHz signals.
After all, you always have to give up something to gain something else. In the case of 5 GHz, you gain potential speed but in return, you must give up penetration power and distance capability.
In order to work well, 5 GHz signals need to almost have a line-of-sight relationship between devices. Unless you can achieve this, you will do much better to leave the Time Capsule running at the 802.11n (b/g compatible) 2.4 GHz Radio Mode and allow the Express devices to "extend" that network.
As for the location of the AirPort Express devices in an exended network, that is critical for best performance. That's because the Express can only "extend" the quality and bandwidth of the signal that it receives. Post back if you need a few more tips on how to find the best location for the AirPort Express devices.

Has anyone seen this strange behavior? I try to edit a Date Cell in JTable (orig. value 10/02/2000) and change it to (10/03/2000), I press Enter. But, the value of my Time Cell in the next column, same row which I never edited (orig. value 00:05:00) changes to approximately my system time in GMT (16:28:48).
This is an excerpt from my TableModel which get called from setValueAt():1734 javax.swing.JTable, JTable.java. In the code below, the debug statement prints out:
row, col = 0,0
Value in SubTableModel = 10-02-2000 16:28:48
Value should be "10-02-2000" since I did not edit the time cell at all. And why is row and col both zero?

Lost In The Time Machine - Help!

I sincerely apologize, in advance, if I am repeating old history here and for all the questions.
Time Machine has got me confused… I’ve read the FAQ’s/Threads but still not sure about how to proceed. I’m a ex Microsoft Windows guy and Mac newbie. And I am completely in love with this MacBook. I’m never going back to Microsoft land.
The Setup is - External 1TB LaCie HD with two partitions to backup a MacBook Pro and a Macbook (250 GB HD’s each). Both MacBook’s are on home wireless network using the Airport Extreme (not Time Capsule).
Time Machine is optimized to do hourly backup's (which I personally think is crazy...). The documentation I read strongly suggests not to change the backup time since the Time Machine SW is optimized to work that way. However, there is reference to a "Time Machine Editor" software (assume third party SW?) to modify the time settings of these backups. But, it seems the literature does not recommend using it or better yet, use it at your own risk type of thing. I don't do enough "stuff" to merit hourly backups. I think daily would be optimum.
My initial thinking was, if I have to do hourly backups then it seems that the external HD would have to be directly connected to my MacBook Pro. Which means the other MacBook is not being backed up. However, that was my most likely flawed initial thinking.
So, some questions (tried to limit it to five):
1. I first need to do an initial full backup on both MacBook’s. So, assume I would direct connect the ext. HB to each machine to accomplish that?
2. Then, I am assuming, the only way to properly set this up is to connect the ext. HD to the Airport Extreme? That way the hourly backups can be done for both machines over the wireless network. Personally, I would prefer to directly connect the drive to each machine, at the end of the day, and do a daily backup. But, I guess that would not be the best way to proceed and probably a bit painful to do.
3. The Airport Extreme has one USB port which is being using for sharing a printer. So, again I am assuming I would need a USB hub to connect the printer and the ext. HD?
4. If backup's have to be done hourly, how does that work when the computer is in Sleep mode? How does it work if I am working on something when it tries to backup? For instance, I read that iPhoto needs to be closed when doing backups. And I use iPhoto a lot. Do, I have to stop everything, every hour, for it to do its incremental hourly backup?
5. Is the “Time Machine Editor” SW a safe way to change the time of backups?
I really don’t get the hourly backup thing. I know these HD’s are mechanical hardware and can fail. But I’ve got to believe they are more reliable than needing to be backed-up every hour.
I would greatly appreciate any help in getting this setup correctly. Thanks, in advance, for the help!

Ok, so I think I'm getting it straight now but just a couple more questions to completely cement this in my head.

b. Leave the ext. HD connected to my MacBook pro, at all times, when I am on it. Which it will do the hourly backups. And this is even more appropriate since I use my MacBook Pro more hours in the day.
c. The second MacBook, which my 87 yr. old Mom uses (LOL), is most definitely not needed to be backed up hourly. She just uses the internet (Facebook, online bridge) and iPhoto once in awhile. So, I can backup her's once a day after I am done using mine and it is shut down.
Does, that sound like a good plan?

Is HomeHub designed to be on all the time? No off ...
Is the Home Hub designed to be on all the time, or should it be turned off when not being used for long periods eg overnight? There doesn't seem to be an on/off switch, other than turning it off and on at the plug, which seems rather brutal? On the one hand I don't want to shorten its life by turning it on and off at the plug all the time, on the other I don't want to shorten its life by leaving it on permanently and it overheating...
Is there a recommended approach?

Using a Thandar TM355 digital multimeter I have measured the current taken by the Hub mains power supply . I have found the approximate currents as follows
Wireless ON, ADSL ON 36.8mA
Wireless OFF, ADSL ON 31.5mA
Wireless ON, ADSL disconnected 34.0mA
The mains voltage is presently about 238 VAC, which results in power consumptions of 8.75W, 7.5W and 8.1W. This suggests leaving the router on all the time, with wireless and ADSL, consumes about 1 kWhr in 5 days. Switching to the Power Save mode uses just over 1 kWhr in 6 days. ]
I agree with the comments that switching on and off the HH mains power a number of times within a few hours does indicate to the exchange DSLAM that there is a line problem and it will reduce the line synchronisation rate.
I have not switched mine off deliberately for a couple of months whilst Openreach were sorting out a line problem (several random disconnects each day causing my rate to drop). This seems to have been sorted after four visits to my home, the road cables and the exchange, and the rate is now up at 12,000-14,000 kbps
There is in the HH a page where the broad band can be deliberately disconnected. I have not been able to find an answer to using this at night before switching off and then switching on in the morning. I assume that clicking on disconnect sends a header message to the DSLAM or other circuit to warn it that the signal disappearing is deliberate and should not be construed as a faulty line - I have not so found the answer to whether or not this true.

ICal won't stop taking the times out of my event names
I make my calendar events as follows: "10:00 doctor appt"
This makes it so I can see the time at a glance and means that I didn't forget to put a time. I also like feeling entirely in control of my calendar.
However, iCal keeps taking the time out and adding it to the state of the event, which I don't like. I don't mind it changing the state as long as it leaves the time in the text. I've tried to find a way to turn off this functionality, but I can't find a checkbox for it. I've been having to manually fix the text on each event once or twice before the time will stay, which is extremely annoying. Is there any way to get the text to stay that I've missed? If not, can Apple please include a fix for this in their next update? Thanks.Betafly,
Generally speaking, I enter my events in the "Month" view.
Try entering the event by typing "doctor appt at 10:00" This is what is displayed when I use that entry method:
If the "Month" view window is too small the time will not display, so make sure that the window is large enough to display the time.
Also, open Calendar Help and look for "Add events to calendars." That will help explain various text entry techniques. -
