Is it okay to carry your computer while asleep?

So, I was once told that it was not good to carry your laptop around, even when it's asleep. The person who told me this said that it could damage the hard drive or computer in some way... That jostling it by being carried in a bag, for example, could cause damage. Is there any truth in this? I'm not talking about going over a mogul course while carrying my MacBook, just carrying it around school without having to shut it down.
Thanks, all!

Actually, the sudden motion sensor does not come into play with a sleeping Mac laptop. The purpose of the SMS is to instantly park the read/write heads in the event of a sudden motion, if the drive is running at the time.
If a Mac laptop is already asleep, whether it is a new Macbook Pro or an old Powerbook duo 230, the drive heads are already parked. The SMS only applies to a non-Sleeping but running Mac laptop computer.

Not to be rude, but you're just as capable of searching the app store as any of the other user's in this forum.  Have you at least attempted that?

Absolutely!! The iPhone is fully functional while being charged - allowing 3rd party manufactures to make charging cases ect. Enjoy

  • Windows Media Player cannot play the file because the required video codec is not installed on your computer

I can not find solution to the issue "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because the required video codec is not installed on your computer" while attempting to play the file with *.wmv extension. Some computer fail in spite of said missing codec
being present according the windrows media player in Windows 7 box

If Rashid's link does not resolve it... consider the below:
    A)  As of this writing, the codec for GoToMeeting webinar recordings ("G2M4" codec) was only mentioned in *one* web page, of about 10 Microsoft web pages I read, to resolve this problem (and that codec is not included, yet, in their diagnostic tool),
so if you're trying to play a GoToMeeting webinar, simply get the codec for it from their site:  http://www.GoToMeeting.com/codec
    B)  If Windows Media Player (WMP) will not even open the file, you won't be able to get the 4-character codec's name (like "G2M4") from WMP.  But VLC's media player will tell you that code, even when it fails to run the video.... and then you can
    search the internet for it.
    C)  The problem sometimes is not actually a missing codec.  Other things that have helped others, some from:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-pictures/the-windows-media-player-12-could-not-play-the-wma/bb823460-44df-4e8d-ba2c-42ec0e111e5a?page=3
    (1) running the System File Checker (SFC.exe),
    (2) opening WMP first (running both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions) then opening the file from inside them,
    (3) confirming that WMP was the file association for WMV files,
    (4) Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Sound, selecting my audio device, and looking for a "5.1" setting (I didn't have one), to change to "stereo",
    (5) checking Tools\Options\Devices\Speakers\Properties\Speaker Properties\AdvancedPlayback\ Speakers /HP\Properties\Advanced\Default Format, to select "CD or DVD Quality" (if that setting appears for your device),
    Good luck,

  • My network disconnects when computer falls asleep???

I am working on Verizon Fios wireless network and my computer loses the network everytime the computer goes to sleep. The only time it works is when I do a full strt up. I have to switch over to to my airport express network after waking the computer.
Is there some kind of setting I can change to help this stuation?
    Thanks so much.

Same here on my iMac 2013 running Mavericks. As soon as display goes asleep, Airplay disconnects. Caffeine does not help.
Unchecking mirroring does not work either, leaving me with a screen resolution that's maybe fit for TV but unsuitable to work with when you want to carry on using your computer while music is playing on the Apple TV.
I start wondering if Apple is actually doing sufficient testing of their software. These are rather basic errors.

  • Mac Airplay disconnects when computer falls asleep

Recently (and this is quite a new issue for me, probably after last Apple TV update), AirPlay disconnects right when the Mac goes to sleep. Apple TV stays on, just the AirPlay connection drops. I have to manually connect the computer again (with the AirPlay icon).
It didn't happen with previous versions of Apple TV and I set the sleep time to never.
    What could be the issue?

  • Does my iMac check for new Mail messages while asleep?

The Energy Saver settings on my iMac are to sleep the display after 15 mins. and the computer after 20 mins. and I do check "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep whenever possible."
    Two questions:
    1. *Is permitting my hard disks to sleep helpful or harmful to my iMac in the long run?* I care less about energy costs than the long-term health of my computer. So what's worse: spinning the hard disks down (causing wear and tear) or constantly exerting the disks by never letting them rest?
    2. This is the key question for me at this moment: *while asleep, does my iMac retrieve new email messages?* This is an issue because I have a number of Rules I've setup within Mail on my iMac that move messages to certain folders. So if the iMac is asleep while I'm out and about, these messages clog up the inbox on my iPhone's Mail app until I come home and wake the computer (I have a gmail IMAP account). Also, does checking the option to put the hard disk to sleep affect my iMac's behavior in retrieving email while the machine is asleep?
    I'd appreciate any clarification.
    Grant

    1) There are lots of arguments about all kinds of esoteric questions and whether you should spin down the drive or not sounds like a good candidate. Drives do die of course, but in the greater scheme of things you and I are more likely to either replace the drive for something larger or replace the computer before that drive dies.
    2) If your computer is asleep it cannot check for mail or do anything else for that matter. End of story. Assuming you have broadband, when you restart/wake your computer it may appear that mail has been accessed while the computer was asleep but that's because your mail application probably checks as soon as the computer was awakened/restarted.

I tries and it doesnt work!!

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Have downloaded Mountain Lion on my 2010 Mac Mini. Now when starting up, after a while I get a message that says, "You must restart your computer." I do that but get the same message again and again. Any ideas? Thanks!

I am having issues trying to start up with Mountain Lion on my 2010 Mac Mini. Here's the scenario:
    1) After starting up, I get the usual gray screen with Apple logo.
    2) After a few minutes, a darker gray screen scrolls down and in the middle of this is a black dialogue box with reversed (white) text. This text, in multiple languages, reads: "You need to restart your computer." Then it goes on to instruct on how to shut it down and restart it.
    3) I follow this instruction, but get the same dialogue box over and over agin.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks and best wishes.

If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all. Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is on a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways: ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.) ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens. ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid. Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the entire contents — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post shutdownStall, spin, or hang reports.

Click Restart to restart your computer and try installing again.

You should be able to install Mac OS X 10.7 or later on your 2011 MacBook Pro without issue, if it came with 10.6.3 as your signature suggests.  Mind you, any 2011 MacBook Pro must use the original 10.6 installer disc labelled MacBook Pro if it desires to have 10.6 installed on it.   The retail installer disc will not work on that model, nor will one from another age MacBook Pro, or other model labelled installer.  Also
10.7 came both on USB Flash drive and Mac App Store installer versions.   Both required either 10.6.6 minimum be pre-installed, or no Mac OS X operating system on the drive or partition it was to be installed on.
10.7.1 through 10.7.5 combo could be installed only once 10.7 had been installed.  A combo update is available for installing on top of any version of 10.7.  Otherwise only the preceding version could be updated to the next.
10.8 came only on Mac App Store installer.  It is available only to 10.6.8 and later users.
10.8.1 to 10.8.5 combo could be installed only once 10.8 had been installed.  A combo update is available for installing on top of any version of 10.8.  Otherwise only the preceding version could be updated to the next.
10.9 came only on Mac App Store installer. It is available only to 10.6.8 and later users.
Both 10.9 and 10.9.1 had a serious security vulnerability, which only 10.9.2 addressed.
10.9.2 combo could be installed only once 10.9 had been installed.
For all three Mac App Store releases, the partition to be installed on had to be GUID partition formatted according to Apple Disk Utility.

Before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. With information, s/he may be able to get your issue resolved sooner.
