  • Is it just me or does Exchange with Push enabled drain the battery?

+*I'm pretty sure that this is obvious to all - I just don't see how everyone is just okay with it.+*
The iPhone battery is generally very good; even when using MobileMe with Push enabled, etc.
BUT; once you add a Microsoft Exchange account & leave Push enabled, you could probably watch the battery drain like a sewer right after a heavy rain storm.
Personally, I keep my Exchange on Fetch every 15 minutes and this provides an enormous difference in battery performance.
*_Why is everyone just okay with this?_*
+Just to explain my theory+ - if you watch the background activity using XCODE's Console, it's a pretty dead giveaway. Microsoft Exchange with Push enabled is not really utilizing the true 'push' technology; rather, it's actually checking in and pinging the corporate exchange server every 7-10 seconds. This allows the device to maintain the 'push' image of receiving an email in 'realtime'. But all of this is at the tremendous cost of the battery life. Personally, when I leave my Push on, I need to charge my iPhone 2-3 times daily vs. once every other day with Fetch.
    +Comments, anyone?+

OK, what you are seeing is a problem with your phone, not a general problem with the iPhone or any specific release. Most of the time my phone gets excellent battery life with Exchange Push enabled. Occasionally (a couple of times a year) I suddenly see a heavy battery drain with Push on. I've seen it with every release of iPhone software since Activesync was added. I've concluded that something is broken when this happens. An IT admin in the forum posted about a year ago that he saw many open connections to phones of users when they were reporting this problem. He rebooted the Exchange server and the problem went away for a while. As most of us don't have that option I've found a couple of ways to fix it on the phone. One or more of them has always worked for me.
    1. Reset Network Settings on the phone and reboot.
    2. Go into Mail,Contacts,Calendar, tap on the Exchange account and turn off all 3 functions. Then reboot, go back and turn them on.
If these don't fix it what I do is go into Settings again and delete the Exchange account. I then reboot and add it back. I then wait several hours for the account to resync (it's best to do this with a WiFi connection). When all of my email, contacts and calendar entries have reappeared I fully charge the phone and test battery life again. This sequence has always worked for me, but I have seen posts from owners who say it did not work. But most say it works.

  • Iphone app updates won't download. They are paused and draining my battery

I went today to download an update to one of my apps. Itunes asked for my password which I put in and everything was okay. Now there are about 40 apps that have been deleted that are showing that they are trying to install an update. Only they are paused and none of them are downloading and it is draining my battery. I don't want them to download to begin with, it was only supposed to be one update for an app. I am able to use the other functions on my phone, such as calls and texts. How do I fix this so either they all download or I get them to stop downloading?

I have done that a few times. I have even held down the top button and the bottom button at the same time and noting changes.

  • IOS 6 drains my battery like IOS 5

I have an iPhone 4S and just like when IOS 5 came out, any notifications that appear on my phone, if I don't unlock my phone (swipe the bottom), to clear out the notifications, they end up draining my battery!  Same problem when IOS 5 came out and APPLE had to release an enhancement updgarde to fix this!
I only have Email and Facebook notifications turned on and I make sure to clear out any opened apps. I didn't have have this problem with IOS 5.1.1.  As soon as IOS 6 came out, these problems occured, just like when IOS 5 first came out.
I used my phone 4x yesterday (2 IM's and 2 short calls) and I started with 100% battery and by 5pm, it was down to 18%.
2 nights ago, I went to bed with a 38% battery and when I woke up, my battery was at 0% as my phone shut itself down.
I have also tried doing a hard reset.
Anyone else having this issue?  Any word on when an enhancement upgrade will be available to fix this issue?

    Brad,
I truly believe the issue is the IOS 6 software upgrade.
I, recently, used to work for Apple (1.5 yrs) and have tried everything that there is to do with remedying this issue.
As mentioned in my initial post, my phone did not have these issues until after installing IOS 6, which coincidentally, is having the same issue as we all had when IOS 5 was released.

  • What is the normal amount of GB of Other Space for a new 32 GB Ipod touch 5 Generation with iOS 6.1.3? Also, will iOS 7 slow down/drain the battery of my device?

My Other storage space was at 2.84 GB after i loaded all my music/apps onto a recently purchased 32 GB Ipod touch 5 Generation with iOS 6.1.3.  Resetting the settings and removing the music and apps did not help reduce the Other space.  I restored to a backup and got my Other storage space down to almost 400 MB.  When I started syncing music it grew 500-ish MB.  Each time I sync, the Other grows a bit more.  This is really irritating.
The official listed available GB on my 32 GB is 28.22 GB (not including Other), so now I am irritated knowing that this Other is taking up my space when I didn't even have 32 GB of free space to begin with. So 28.22 - 2.84GB = 25.38 GB.
I want to restore to a new device to see if that helps, but do not want to upgrade to i0S7.  Is there any way to do this?
If I upgrade to i0S 7 I am worried it might slow my ipod or drain the battery faster.  Will it do that?  The ipod is expensive and I dont want it to go downhill and obsolete on me because it can't handle a better operating system.

Less than 1 1/5 GB is normal. It does grow with time.
What is the Other on my iPhone and How to Remove It

  • Yosemite is draining my battery. Please help.

Hi! Look like parallels is draining my battery each time it gets connected. The battery drain only started 1 month after I upgraded to Yosemite.
Can anyone help please? Would using Boot Camp resolve this problem? Do I need to reload win 8 after setting up Boot Camp?
    Thanks in advance.

The title of this topic is wrong. Parallels/Windows is draining your battery. Perhaps the Parallels forums are the best place to look for a solution. E.g.:

  • Is there a way to disable push mail from Yahoo? It's draining my battery

I'm on the prepaid plan and every 10-15 minutes my iphone turns on with a "The last transaction cost $0.00" message. I don't mind the message (although it is a bit annoying) but my problem is that this turns the LCD on for about 2 minutes at a time.
I charged my battery to 100% last night, haven't used it at all today and after just turning it on a few minutes ago I had the "Your battery life is at 10%" message followed by a 5% remaining message a few minutes later.
I've heard that it's the yahoo push mail service thats causing the phone to give the message (since it connects to the internet). My Yahoo account is my main one and I'd hate to have to login to yahoo's site each time to check it (the email functionality was a big selling point for me with the iphone). ATT/Apple don't seem to want to disable this message/"Feature", so I'm guessing I would need to step in and do something on my end.
Is there any way to disable yahoo mail from "pushing" messages to my phone? I can hit the Check Mail button if I have to.

    Hi Everyone,
To give an update on the situation: I disabled the Yahoo account and it seems to make a VERY NOTICEABLE difference in battery life - prior to this my battery would drain quite rapidly but since disabling it it's only lost about 15-20% over the past 24 hours (and thats with using the video/music/internet functions for about an hour and a half).. Prior to this it would have been close to drained under the same circumstances.
Also, to confirm, the "Your last transaction cost 0.00" messages only appear when accessing the internet manually now. before they appeared every 10-15 minutes with no interaction from myself at all (while it was sitting idle, while watching videos, while charging, while in my pocket, etc..)
I do have it set to only check Manually but Yahoo would seem to check on it's own even though this setting is checked (I'm guessing it has to do with the Push setting). Aside from draining the battery, it was quite annoying having 30 or so "Your transaction cost $0.00" messages to click through whenever I turned on the phone.
I did have the screen set to shut off after 1 min, but the 'your transaction cost..' messages would first wake the iphone up, the screen would stay bright for about 30 seconds, dim for about 30 seconds, then turn on bright again for 1 minute until it shut off. I'm guessing the screen (being on for about 10-15 minutes per hour due to this) and the fact that yahoo accesses the internet on such a frequent basis are what cut the battery life down.
I really wish I could make Yahoo work more like Gmail and have it manually search for new mail

  • I'm new to iPad. I've installed some apps. The apps are "open" even when I go to something else or close that page. I just did some updates on other apps and see those apps are still "open". How do I close them?  I'm sure it's draining my battery. Help!

I'm new to iPad. I've installed some apps. The apps are "open" even when I go to that page and go off it. How do I close them?  I'm sure they are draining my battery. Can someone explain what I'm doing or not doing correctly?  Thanks

If you are referring to the fact that, in the App Store app, after you have installed or updated an App, that the Install button changes to now read "Open" then this does not mean that the App is Open and running. It means, rather, that, if you touch the button now marked "Open", the App will be started and "Open". It's just a quick way to get to the App you have just installed or updated.

  • TS3899 How to cancel a sent file that seems too big to be sent - but keeps trying thus draining the battery?

How do I cancel a file that is trying to be sent but seems too big to be sent - it keeps trying to send andconstantly drains the battery.
    Sandy

Try force-closing Mail: double-tap the home button, locate Mail in the list at the bottom, tap and hold it until it wiggles, tap to close it, finish by tapping the home button.  Then go the you email provider's webmail site (such as iCloud.com for @me.com mail), log into your account and delete any emails you find in your Drafts folder.  Then open Mail again and see if it stopped trying to send.

  • Doe a bluetooth wireless keyboard drain the battery?

Does a bluetooth enabled keyboard drain teh battery of an iPad if left on?

I just copied that from ways to conserve battery. I have no idea if its just incrimental or what? You got me there. Just if your not using it and your keyboard is sitting there, turn it off.
You may be getting the idea by now that wireless networking of any kind drains battery. It's true, so another way to save battery life is to turn offBluetooth
*Meg- Who knows Its recommended,  but is it....."Oh your battery will last 10 additional mins with bluetooth off". Could be something as silly as that.

  • If I use my bluetooth mouse with my MacBook Pro will it drain more battery?

Bluetooth mouse (Razer Orochi) paired with MacBook Pro with Retina Display. Will it drain my battery drastically?

Not drastically but wil use at the minimum around 30 mins of battery life.....Depending how much you're using your mouse....

  • HT5624 I don't want Icloud.  I believe it drains the battery of my phone.  How do I get the old operating system back on my new iphone 4G?

I just got a new upgrade iphone from a 3G to 4G.  My son updated the software with Icloud.  I do not like it, it drains my battery.  How do I get the old operating system back (without icloud).  Also, I don't know how to close an APP anymore and I think that could be draining my battery as well.  It doesn't work the same way when I doubled click and then touch the APP it doesn't give me a dash to close it up again.

Apple does not support downgrading the iOS.
As for icloud, go to   Settings>icloud, scroll to bottom of screen and tap Delete Account.
    As for battery drain...
    Look through this...
    http://osxdaily.com/2013/09/19/ios-7-battery-life-fix/
Also, Settings>General>Background App Refresh:   turn off apps you don't want refreshing data - this can preserve battery life.
Also try a reboot:  press and hold the home and power buttons until the Apple icon is displayed, then let go.

  • Nexus was turned off, then froze... what drained the battery?

I have a 3 month old Nexus running the latest Android OS. I don't have many apps or widgets, and the ones I do have, I have set for manual updating, so I can see what is going on. Periodically, I turn my phone off, like at night when I don't want to hear from anybody. I did it early this morning, but could not get the phone to turn back on - the power button wasn't functional.
I should have done it from the start, but upon taking the phone to a VZW store (which turned out to be just a 'premium retailer' - no repair or service offered), we popped the battery, and the phone came back on after pressing the power button. The salesman tried checking some settings (actually, only the 'sleep' setting, changing it from 5 to 1 minute. I noticed that the battery level was showing the need for a charging, and I know the phone was at around 75% when I turned it off. The reason I didn't pop the battery originally was that I was having some trouble with the power button not always working when it should (there have been a few times where I could only turn the phone back on by pressing the bottom half of the power button).
The phone was off for about 4 hours. When I got back home an got it plugged into the charged, I took a look at the battery usage, and the attached is what I found. A basically straight-line drop in battery power, I am guessing from the time I turned the phone off until after I got it back on charge.
So I'm wondering... what caused the power drop? If the phone was off, the power shouldn't drain like that, if at all. Even running all my apps and widgets, the phone shouldn't get so low so fast. And nothing has been updated in at least a few days, and I have turned the phone on and off since the last thing was updated.
Has anyone seen power activity and phone activity like this before?
    Thanks!
    Frank

Haven't seen that but last night I had something similar occur.
Last night I powered my phone down, while fully charged, before I went to bed and when I woke up this morning it would not turn on so I plugged it into the charger and it showed the battery at 0%.
Then just a short while ago I left work and ran to the store. My phone was fully charged when I left and I was only gone 30 minutes. The wifi was off and during that time I recieved one text which I read and then turned off the screen but in those 30 minutes my charge dropped from 100% to 80%.
Now my phone, and the battery is a year old (called the local Verizon store where I got it and believe it or not I'm 1 week out of warranty.  lol!) and while the battery life has always sucked, and I might expect some reduction in it's charge capacity but such an aburpt reduction has me wondering what's going on.

  • Process that's draining my battery

The past two days, my phone has been getting really hot and draining the battery for no apparent reason. Seems to me like there's a process that's getting hung up, so when I notice it happening, I turn the phone off, then back on again. But eventually, it starts doing it again.
Is there a way to sift though some logs or a diognostic to find out what's running that's killing my battery? It just started yesterday and I haven't installed any new aps...well, there were a few updates to some aps today, but i haven't run any of them since the update.
    Thanks for any help!

I'd suspect an app that uses Location Services for the issue you describe - had this happen with MLB at Bat (Lite) today, in fact.
