Is it permissible to offer free IOS apps backed by paid subscription services?

Hello,
I was wondering if it's permissible according to Apple's guidelines and standards to offer free IOS apps that interact with online services that are paid for outside of the Apple ecosystem.  Apps for Netflix and Dropbox, to name a few, seem to suggest this is perfectly reasonable.  I was hoping that someone could point me towards the appropriate standard or guideline that spells this out expliclty.
Thanks in advance,
Mike

I must apologize for my reply. Somehow I read that you were looking to use a 3rd party advertising platform. I don't know where that came from.
You can certainly connect to a non-Apple, paid service. What trips people up is that you can't have a link to sign up for said paid service. If users are able to sign up directly in the app, they must do it through the App Store. It is a very good idea to have a native login to said service as well. If you use WebKit then the website could display a "sign up now" button that would get your app rejected.
All of the details are in the guidelines and developer agreement. You need a developer account to see them but people have posted then all over the Internet. In the developers site, they are listed right up at the top.

  • Is Apple Still Offering Free 'Retro' Apps For iLife 08?

I'm reasonably disappointed with Apple's latest version of iLife. I had heard that they were offering free downloads of the separate apps that would restore the functionality and interface of the previous version. Are they still offering that option, and what is the URL to access the downloads?
    Thanks in advance,
    DJ Gleason

as far as I am aware they have only offered iMovie 6 ad a free download to iLife '08 owners - http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/imovieHD6.html

  • Does apple allows credit card payment in ios app for just user subscription inside the app?

    Hello,
Suppose I want to develop an iPhone app which performs user subscription for the app to assist the user and provide the user with its facilities and this user subscription can be done only when user pays some amount to the app. Now what I want is that this subscription amount should be payable by providing the credit card payment in the app. So my question is that is this credit card payment allowed by Apple or such an app will be rejected by Apple?
    Thanks

Sorry but can you explain me does your reply means that I should use In App Purchase provided by Apple or I can use Paypal or other credit card payment options?

  • How to update (free) IOS apps after changing Apple ID

So I inherited my daughter's phone when she upgraded and I switched everything over to my Apple ID (iCloud, App Store, iTunes, etc.)
Now, it refuses to update apps -- even free ones like facebook, instagram, twitter -- unless I provide the password to HER Apple ID (presumably because she downloaded them under her ID.
Apart from deleting and re-installing, is there a way to do this?
    Thanks,  Hugh.

Apps are tied to the Apple ID used to purchase/download them.   And will always require it to update, there's no way to get around that.
For free Apps, you can delete them, and re-download them with your Apple ID with out any issues.    Purchased Apps will need to be bought and payed for with your Apple ID.

  • Newly bought iPhone 4 offered free iWorks will it be free for my iPad?

Purchased and activated an iPhone 4 two days ago (28/09/2013) and when downloading apps it said something like 'download these free iOS apps' which included the iWorks apps so I agreed knowing that some of them cost £6.99. On the apple website it says iWorks will be free on iOS 7 devices activated after 1st September I think. I then went on my iPad mini which I've had since February, has the iOS 7 update and shares the same iCloud account. It said I could sync the new apps from my iPhone to my iPad so I did and iWorks has been downloaded to my iPad without any mention of payment. Does this mean I won't have to pay for iWorks on my iPad despite it having been activated in February?

If there is water damage then they will likely conclude that your issues are a result of that and you will have to pay.
But don't ask us, ask them. We're users and this have no idea what Apple will say in your case.

  • Looking for a free iOS 4 app that can search through .pdf files or spreadsheets

Looking for a free iOS 4 app that can search through .pdf files or spreadsheet
    Thanks

    Hey there
"pdf creator" for iPad works flawlessly for me working with pdf files
It takes care of all my needs
I'm not sure about sending via Wifi or Bluetooth but I send them via e- mail all the time
Possibly it could handle your needs as well
Just type it into the App Store search field and the first one that comes up is the one I use
Jump on over there and read up on it before buying and see if it will help you
    Hope this helps

  • Can I develop an iOS app that can download multiple free iBooks that I publish and make them available within the iBooks app?

Is it possible for a self-developed iOS app to download iBooks from our server and make the books available to the iBooks app?
My organization is evaluating publishing some free training manuals / textbooks as iBooks made with Apple's "iBooks Author" software. We don't necessarily want to use the iTunes Store for distribution because of the semi-sensitive nature of the content. To distribute the books to users with iPads, we've thought of using MDM software, a webpage, or an iOS app. The reasoning behind an iOS app is that the app would be a "download manager", making it much easier for a user to download all 42 books all at once. A user would install our "free training manual download manager" iOS app and use it to authenticate to a our server app that would serve the books, the end result being the books available via the iBooks app.
    Thanks,
    Ted

    Hi Kappy,
Actually Apple lets self-publishers distribute iBooks outside of the iTunes Store, as long as the iBooks are free (no cost to user).
What I'm wondering is if it's possible for a custom iOS app to side-load iBooks so that they're available to a user within the iBooks app.
If not, we'll either post the iBooks for download from our website or we'll use MDM software to push the iBooks to MDM-enrolled iPads.

  • Is it possible I can create an iOS app for free???

Is it possible I can create an iOS app for free??? I don't care what site, I just wanna know and how to add the new app to the App Store.....

You need to pay a yearly fee of $99 dollars (US) in order to be able to test the apps on your ipod and post to the app store. Other than that creating apps are "free".

  • I don't understand why I can't download for free the apps designed by Apple, such as Pages and Numbers, which are free with iOS 7. Can anyone help me?

I don't understand why I can't download for free the apps designed by Apple, such as Pages and Numbers, which are free with iOS 7. Can anyone help me?

The apps are free with iOS 7 if you purchased a new device after September 2013. The apps do not come free just because you are running iOS 7 now. Did you purchase or receive a new iPad recently?
If you did, are you using the same Apple ID to get the apps that you used to activate the iPad? If you are, sign out of your ID, restart your iPad, sign in again and go back to the App Syore and see if the apps show up as free.
Settings>iTunes & App Store>tap your ID and sign out. Restart the iPad and go back to the settings and sign in again.

  • HT201304 Does the iPad offer a separate login for young kids that is similar to Kindle's Free Time app?

Does the iPad offer a separate login for young kids that is similar to Kindle's Free Time app?
    Thanks!

No, but there are some apps that have different profiles for each user.  For example, FREE McGruff SafeGuard child-safe browser has an upgrade feature that lets each person in a family have a different profile for browsing (as well as recording which websites they visited, etc.).  Available at the app store - McGruff SafeGuard - or visit www.gomcgruff.com/browser

  • Can you update an iOs app and change its platform offering from iPad/iPhone to just iPad?

When building a new app with Adobe DPS to update an existing app, can you update an iOs app and change its platform offering from iPad/iPhone to just iPad?

Vinod is correct in that you can build a new app that's iPad-only, but if you try to submit it as an update to the existing app, Neil is correct--Apple will reject it because it's considered a downgrade. You either need to stick to the universal app and do something like create a single iPhone folio that refers users to the iPad, or you need to submit it as a new app.

  • HT4539 I want to download trevie on my iPad like I have on my iPhone it says I need iOS 5 .   If I can' t have it why is it offered as an app.  I really enjoy it

I want to download trivia on my iPad like I have on my phone.  It says I need iOS5. I really enjoy playing it on my phone.  If I cannot have it why is it offered as an app?

Unless the app is only for the iPhone then you can have it on the iPad, you can update it to iOS 5+
Connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases (you may also want to copy photos off the iPad as well) and then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'. You may also want to copy off the iPad any important documents, notes, files etc e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case.
You can then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button.

  • Upgraded to paid CC but IOS apps still say "Creative Cloud Free"

I had the Creative Cloud app (amongst other Adode apps that are linked to my CC account) installed on my iPad before I paid the CC subscription. I then downloaded Lightroom after I paid, but the app says Trial Version. The Creative Cloud app says I have "Creative Cloud Free" only under Settings. I have tried logging out, logging back in, shutting the iPad down, reopening, uninstalling the app, reinstalling, turning around, touching the ground, burying the iPad under a full moon, but still I'm listed as Free. I have no issues downloading desktop apps, and when I log in on desktop my account says I have a paid subscription. Any ideas? Thanks

    Hi Gec78,
I have verified everything and it seems everything is clear from our side.
Can you please try the steps below:
    Delete the OPM.db File:
    Close the Creative Cloud application.
    Navigate to the OOBE folder.
    Windows: [System drive]:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Local\Adobe\OOBE
    Mac OS: /Users/[user name]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/OOBE
    Delete the opm.db file.
    Launch Creative Cloud.
if the issue still occurs please try the second solution below:
    Check your Hosts file:

  • Phantom restarts / crashes with Maverick. Restore Disk Utility, disk can't be repaired says "live system repair is not supported" Is there a fix yet? Or is Maverick "FREE" because Apple no longer offers free phone support?

Phantom restarts / crashes with Maverick. Under restore Disk Utility, disk can't be repaired says "live system repair is not supported" Is there a fix yet? Or is Maverick "FREE" because Apple no longer offers free phone support?

Get onto the integrated iOS + Mac OS and end support for "legacy" Mac 10.8 and earlier.
Force older hardware users like me to upgrade to new hardware which is where $$ are.
Make apps work across tablets, phone, and computer with similar (though not the "same" app, but able to read and use the same file format).
    Simplify.
I don't think anyone incl. Microsoft knew Windows 8.1 was going to be a free upgrade, I didn't and read that it would be more like $30.
No OS is ready for everyone on the day it is launched. iOS 7 is now 7.04 and climbing, Mac OS tends to really not be ready until the last patch and version is out, often a year or more after it was first issued. Ship it, then plan to fix the bugs left in or that surface.
www.macperformanceguide.com is saying "No" to Maverick for now. Of course there will be no "No" on new Mac Pro 2013 6,1 when those ship (Late Jan? )
