Is It Possible For 2 Tiger Equipped Macs To Communicate Via Ethernet ?

My eMac has Tiger and my iMac Panther. They are connected with ethernet cables via a Netgear Wireless Router/Modem.
Originally when they were BOTH Panther equipped, each one could communicate with the other (Go>Connect to Server).
After I upgraded my eMac to Tiger, because of Tiger's limitations, I could only communicate one way - from my Panther iMac.
If I upgrade my iMac to Tiger will I be left with no ethernet communication?
If so, is there any simple workaround, other than using Target Disk Mode or buying plugin USB wireless connections?
Ian.

.................EGG ON MY FACE !.................
I have found the answer to my problem in the Help Menu!
However, before you curse me, I would like to say that I read somewhere that Tiger did not support ethernet connections and from the moment I installed Tiger, sure enough, the connection could NOT be made from eMac to iMac.
It would work from iMac (Panther) to eMac (Tiger), which is what I had also read - so that seemed that! I assumed it would be useless to search Help. So why have I just done it now? Who knows?
The way I had always made my connections was Go>Connect to Server>Connect and then enter the password etc.
However, in the Help Menu it details a slightly different method:-
"On one of the computers, choose Go > Connect To Server and then click Browse.
Double-click the other computer in the window and enter your password, if necessary".
Voila! It works both ways just as it always did!
I cannot remember where I read that the Tiger to Panther connection would not work, but if anyone knows I would certainly like to read it again!
Ian.

  • Is it possible for skype to wake Mac from sleep mode?

Does anyone know if it is possible for skype to wake Mac from sleep mode?

Sadly there is nothing in Skypes Code fot it. In fact, Skype for Mac, is one of the most Vanilla versions out. Windows Version has 5x-10x the user functionality.  Since Microflops buy into Skype, Mac versions will continue to be second rate on purpose, but be thankful, if Microflop was there from teh beginning, they woudl have banned a Mac version, just like they do in their higher tier games.

  • Is it possible for my two new mac laptops to facetime each other?

I recently received my MacBook Pro and MacBook Air through the online store. I was wondering how (if they can) facetime each other? I am using the same apple id (I think) for both and I totally need your help.

    Hi Mercurium,
Sure you can FaceTime between the MBA and the MBP.  BUT, you can't use the same Id for both.  It would be like calling yourself.  If you picked up your land line phone and dialed your own number, you'd get a busy signal. You can use the Id you already have for one of your Mac books -- the other is going to need its very own identification.

  • Connect mac with tc via ethernet for tm backups

    Hi,
I know there's probably already an answer to this question, but I just can't find it.
I normally connect to my time capsule via wifi, but I've been on holiday and made no backups, so now it would take ages. that's why I'd like to do it via ethernet.
If I plug the ethernet cable into the tc and the macbook, I can see the connection in the network setup, but it still does the backup via wifi. And if I turn the wifi of, the time capsule connection is gone.
I already managed to change the setting of the time capsule to ethernet once, but that was under the old airport version. With the airport 6.0 and higher, I don't know how to do this.

Don't touch the existing utility.. just install the new one.. both will list in utilities folder.. only start the one you want.

I'm running OS X 10.7 and right now, I have wifi and the tc is connected wirelessly to the mac
How is the TC connected to the main router?? That is more important.. but it sounds like you have it connected correctly by ethernet.

  • Mac-compatible printer, via ethernet

I have been looking around, without much luck, trying to find a Mac-compatible ethernet printer which also prints (via Ethernet) from a PC.
Does Apple or anyone have a list of Ethernet compatible printers?
    Thanks!

...and I've never heard of a network-capable (ethernet) printer that didn't support Macs, either.
If you want to go kinda fancy for not too many buck$ and are looking at a specific model number suggestion, last month I found a Hewlett Packard CP 2025 DN printer on line for $400 (incl. shipping). Color, laserjet, built-in duplexer, ethernet or USB. Only things I didn't like was it doesn't have built-in wireless network (external box $65 option) and it won't take 11x17 paper (which is too bad because it supports "booklet" layout when printing duplex). But for $400, I guess I can live with those "shortcomings." Works fine with my ppc under osx, works fine with my macintel under osx, I know HP-anything works with wintel.
Moderators: I have no pecuniary interest in Hewlett Packard or any online vendor.

  • Is it possible for the test equip. to tell me the measured data is ready?

When programming to read from a test equipment (e.g. ocsilloscope)
connected to PC/GPIB, many times I have to set a delay before reading
the value, otherwise the return value will be some invalid numbers
(e.g., 0). To achieve valid test results and testing time reduction, I
used trial-and-error to get a "minimum" delay time. But even this
delay time which works for one equipment may not work for another.
    It's such a headache!!!
Is it possible to poll/inquire the status of the test equipment in the
program if the measured data is ready? If yes, how?
Thanks a lot for your answer!

If you are programming using VISA, the following link takes you to some examples of waiting until the instrument has data available. The example link also includes other examples of synchronizing your application with your instrument.

  • Is it Possible for more than one Mac to use the same Catalog?

I run a Mac which contains a catalog of all the images I take.
I would like the other designers in a different room but on the same network to have access to that catalog.
Is this possible with Lightroom? and can it update on their machines as I add new images to it?
I've been running aperture for the last 4 years and after experimenting with Lightroom 3 beta for the last month I'm now happy with it.
    Thanks in advance.

Lightroom does not support installation on a server or to be shared over a network. Also, it will only allow one user access to the catalog at any time. While some users have found ways around these limitations it is more by luck than design that they've done so.

  • Can Mac OS 8 and Mac OS 10.4 Communicate via Ethernet?

I'm trying to find out if an old PPC 7500/100 running OS 8 can talk to a G4 running 10.4. Since OS 8 doesn't support AppleTalk over TCP/IP, it's looking kind of hopeless. Any suggestions? Is it possible, or is the age gap just too wide? Thanks!

Use ShareWay IP. Computers running Mac OS 9 won't work properly or at all with a Mac OS X 10.6 file server.

  • Best Practices for Using Airport Express to Stream iTunes via Ethernet

So I've been reading various posts about using Airport Express to stream iTunes and I've been reading various posts about using the Ethernet port on the Express. However, not sure I've yet found an inclusive listing of settings for both. Wondering if anyone out there has such a thing?
I have an (older) Aiport Express (802.11g, no 'n') running the latest Firmware (6.3, I believe). I have it lashed into my switch via a Cat 6 cable and the 3.5 stereo mini running out to RCA jacks into my RussSound (home audio system) amp. I'd like to make the Express ONLY a iTunes streaming device getting its network link over Ethernet (AirTunes). So, what does everyone suggest for best settings for turning on the Ethernet, turning off the WiFi and running AirTunes?
    Thanks much in advance!
    cheers
    cp root

Airport > Wireless > Wireless mode "off"
Internet > Internet connection > Connect using "Ethernet", Configure IPv4 "via DHCP"
    Music > Enable Airtunes
Enable Airtunes over Ethernet (if this choice appears).
When I first did this, the remote speakers didn't appear in iTunes. I poked around to see what I missed and couldn't find anything wrong, but the next time I ran iTunes the remote speakers appeared.
If you run into a firewall problem, make sure your OS X firewall is configured to "set access for specific services and applications": http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/18503.html
Firmware 6.3 is correct for your Express.

  • How to network to older mac plus DSL via ethernet hub?

I just got DSL (yeah, probably the last guy on the planet who still had dialup). Anyway, I've been using ethernet to connect my old G3 to my iMac, and had to unplug it to hookup the DSL. I have a five-port ethernet hub that I used for a short time years ago to network my G3 to an even older mac. Can I use this to connect the G3, iMac and DSL? I don't really remember anything about how to use the hub. Can someone give me a little guidance please?

You can't use a hub. A hub is an unintelligent system; it repeats all signals it gets down all its ports. This means that if you are connected to the Internet on one port, it will repeat everything on your local network out over the Internet. I'm fairly sure you don't want that.
In addition, a hub does not do NAT, DHCP, or DNS. Basically, it does not assign IP addresses. If you attach devices to a hub, then either they must have fixed IP addresses of their own or something else must assign IPs to them. If you assign your machines fixed IPs in a private network range, because the hub is not a router and does not do NAT (Network Address Translation) and because private networks are just that, private, your machines will not be able to connect to the Internet... but because this is a hub, anything on your network will still go out over the Internet anyway. You won't be able to see the Internet, but anyone on the Internet who wants to and knows how will be able to see you. If you assign your machines fixed IPs in a network range which is not a private network, your network will be visible over the Internet and you will be able to connect... except that you'll be using a visible network range, which probably belongs to someone else, who will object, and when your ISP finds out (which they will in a very short time when the owner of the network range you're using complains to them) you may find that you no longer have an account. Hijacking someone else's network range is a ToS offense for most services. If you don't assign fixed IPs, and rely on DHCP to assign IPs, you will have multiple IPs on your network, all of which are visible over the Internet with no protection whatsoever... and, more important, you're only paying for one IP. Your ISP will be upset. Liberating multiple IPs without paying for them is also a ToS offense.
Connecting via a hub is a very bad idea.
You should get a router. Most home routers have a switch, not a hub, built into them. A router sits between two networks, one your local network, and one the Internet. The router has two IP addresses, one on the Internet (which you're paying your ISP for) and one on your local network (which the ISP doesn't care about). Most home routers can be set to run DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) on the internal network, and set up a network using one of the private ranges. As they are private, they are not routed over the Internet, and whatever you do on the private net stays on the private net, unless you specifically request an Internet connection by running a web browser or an email client or something else that goes out over the Internet. The router will then do NAT for you and send the signal over the Internet, and when it gets a reply, will route it back to your machine. Because the router includes a switch, it will send the reply directly to the machine in question, because a switch is an intelligent device and keeps a list of the machines on the local network and sends the proper signals to the proper machines. (Note that a wireless system is a hub, it broadcasts the signals to everyone in range; there's a reason why I use a wired connection for my systems...) The Internet only sees one IP, that of the router. You can have multiple machines behind the router and neither your ISP nor the rest of the Internet will care.
I have my system set up in the following way:
1 DSL modem talking to the Internet (set in bridge mode, so it's effectively transparent)
2 router talking to the DSL modem (set in NAT and DHCP modes; it controls the network)
3 multiple devices, including an external switch, connected to the router. All are configured to use a private Class C network. I could have up to 254 devices on a Class C network, though that many would probably kill my router which simply isn't built to handle that kind of traffic. My devices include several Macs, several Windows machines, my server, and several printers. You appear to have two or three devices. Your system would work just fine with a standard home router.

    Only the 2006 and be the 2007 shipped with Tiger. See;

I just purchased the Mac Mini Server with the intention of replacing Lion Server with Lion for the first hard drive while installing Windows 7 thru Bootcamp on the second hard drive. Is it possible for me to do this? Thanks.

I would use Parallels or VMWare and use the second drive to hold the virtual machine. That way the VM only uses the space that it needs and you can still use the remainder of the drive for other things, not to mention that you would not need to reboot to run windows.
Also Time Machine does not back up a boot camp partition.

Connect time capsule via ethernet to Mac for back-up only. Is it possible without internet connection ?

    Hi Bob,
I'm not certain the post I sent was posted correctly, as I added it as a reply to a 3-year old thread. Since this is a recently-active thread, though not specific to the issue at hand, I thought I'd post again:
Three years ago you helped me set up a roaming wireless network in my home. It's been rock-steady and I'm forever grateful to you for the time and guidance you gave me. I'd now like to swap out my AirPort Extreme base station for a time capsule. As I understand it, I should be able to unplug the base station and replace it with the TC without problem, so long as I use all the same settings on my TC... network name, security protocol, password, etc. Given the complexity of my network, I thought I should check with you first for any advice you might have. I don't want to set up a new network or make any changes to the existing one-- with the exception of using the TC in place of the AE. I'm already using Time Machine for backups. As a refresher, my current setup has the AE as base station and 3 expresses hard-wired with Ethernet connections elsewhere in my home. I have a 4th express set up wirelessly to use with my stereo system at the front of the house. All AXs are 'n's and are set up, as per your instructions, in Bridge mode to extend the existing network. I'm running the most updated version of Mavericks on my MBPro. Any suggestions you might have will be, as always, very much appreciated! Sincerely, Phyllis Sommers
