No, I'm not aware of any webcams that are compatible with the first gen iPad. You can still use Skype, but the person with the first gen iPad won't be seen by the other person, they'll just get audio

Possible Fix for Random Video Chat Error!

Recently, I was having problems starting video chats. They would start, then disconnect. I figured out I had installed a program called tinyproxy. It interfered with iChat. If you have installed tinyproxy or another similar program, follow the steps below to remove it.
1. Open Terminal
2. Type locate tinyproxy (or your program name)
3. I got a list like:
/usr/local/etc/tinyproxy
/usr/local/etc/tinyproxy/tinyproxy.conf
/usr/local/etc/tinyproxy/tinyproxy.conf-dist
/usr/local/man/man8/tinyproxy.8
/usr/local/sbin/tinyproxy
/usr/local/share/tinyproxy
/usr/local/share/tinyproxy/HTML_VARIABLES
/usr/local/share/tinyproxy/debug.html
/usr/local/share/tinyproxy/debug.html.dist
/usr/local/share/tinyproxy/default.html
/usr/local/share/tinyproxy/default.html.dist
/usr/local/share/tinyproxy/stats.html
/usr/local/share/tinyproxy/stats.html.dist
You need to remove them.
4. Go to finder, click the go menu, then go to folder.
5. Type /usr/
6. Navigate around, moving the respective folders to the trash. (You will be prompted for your admin password each time).
7. Empty Trash
8. Relaunch iChat and enjoy.
This trick has worked on iChat AV 3 and iChat 4.

Thats interesting. I wonder what could be touching to make that happen? Well hopefully this might help some of ya'll that are having the issues with RSD.

Isight used for other video chats

Is it possible for you to use your webcam for other video chatting sights ? I have been trying to video chat online with my friends in college in atl, but its not really recognizing my webcam. I have the Imac with the built in isight. Can anyone help me ?

If you are trying to use your OS X Mac to video chat with a PC user who will use nothing but MSN Messenger or Microsoft Messenger, use aMSN or Mercury on your Mac to get video (but no audio) when you text chat with him.
Additionally , there are web based video sites such as Stickam (to use them, configure your "Flash" settings as described in http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4761707&#4761707 ), and video conferencing sites like MeBeam (see the "MeBeam ™ Blog" page for instructions.) There are many others.

QQ International for Mac: Video Chat problem

Hello Communities,
I downloaded the MAC version for QQ International to talk to a cousin of mine who will be working in China. He's had it on his Windows system here in the states for sometime with no problems. I can get the audio part to work, but the video function works sporadically, and it seems only to turn on my camera if I'm the one making the call. What I've read says there is no video chat function for the Mac version, but that's strange given that my camera does come on in the cases I've mentioned. I also then opened up Windows using Parallels, downloaded that version of it, and am having a similar problem. I have since uninstalled the one on my Windows (in parallel) and the Mac one from my Mac. There is an update for the Mac version of it, but when you click on it, it takes you to the Chinese version of the website, so I didn't proceed further. Anyone have any experience with this and have a fix to make it work?

IPhone 4 skype video chat

All my friends have skype and I'm the only one with an iPhone 4 so I can't video chat with any of them is there any guess to when skype video can be used on the iPhone 4 or if it will ever happen?

Skype Video Chat Not Working

I can't seem to video chat on Skype on my MacBook Pro 13' with Retina Display. The Preference setting shows Face Time being used for video but it's blank. How do I trouble shoot this? Please help! I've been trying to fix this for so long.

After some investigation, we have found that the OSX 10.8.5 update is missing a specific file that would allow some apps such as Skype or iMovie to access the built-in facetime camera on Mid-2013 MacBook Airs.
At this point, we are not sure how this can be fixed, and we'll get in touch with Apple to see how we can solve this.
From our tests, however, external webcams should work. It's not the best workaround, but until something gets fixed, that is the only known (and hopefuly temporary) solution.
For the more tech-savvy readers:
The 10.8.5 update updated a CoreMediaIO plugin that accesses the MBA camera, but didn't bundle the 32-bits version of it.
Other (older and newer) versions of the OS do include a universal version (32 and 64 bits), but not 10.8.5.
This means 32-bits apps such as Skype or iMovie cannot load the plugin, making the built-in facetime camera invisible to these them.

Skype video chat keeps knocking out internet conne...

I am using the BT Broadband Home Hub 2.0 and my BT Broadband WiFi connection is usually consistent from the time I switch my computer on to the time I switch it off.
Only when I do a video chat through Skype does my internet connection usually drop out.
I have just done a speed test through BT.com and it's results are as follows:
Connection speed: 12.3Mb
Download speed: 10.7Mb
Upload speed: 0.81Mb.
According to BT, these are all good, so why does my connection drop out when video chatting through Skype?
Do I need a better broadband router (staying with BT Broadband)?
Do I need faster broadband by getting BT Infinity instead?
Or are there some configurations/settings I can change with BT Broadband and/or Skype to ensure dropouts like this won't happen.

If you are using the normal default connection settings for Skype, then it will try to route incoming calls via your connection, which can result in dropped connections.
Look at the advanced connection settings on Skype, and untick the options to use incoming connections and uPnP. Basically untick all boxes, then shut down Skype, and restart it. See if it helps.
Its not going to work very well over WifI anyway.
There is also a software bug in the earlier home hubs, which can result in the IDS (Intruder Detection System) log overflowing, resulting in loss of DNS connectivity. The IDS tends to be very active when incoming connection attempts are made.

Best practice for p2p video chatting

I use netgroup to implement a video chatting program. The # of memebers in this group is small (2 or 3). I find the audio is delayed (sometimes by 4s) and even cut (e.g. I count number from 1 to 10 but the other memeber only heard 1,2,3 then jump to 7). This happens both when the two members are in totally different locations and when they are in the same location using different computers.
I wonder if there is any article about improving the performance and reduce the delay.

NetStream.audioReliable is only for 1:1 (DIRECT_CONNECTIONS) or client-server streaming. all data in a P2P multicast stream is partially reliable (where the reliability is controlled by the NetStream.multicastWindowDuration).
a P2P multicast may have a jitter of up to the multicast window duration. shorter values for the window can decrease latency and jitter but may also decrease the reliability of the stream (leading to more glitches and artifacts).
for interactive chat between a small number of participants, you should use the DIRECT_CONNECTIONS form.

The cheapest computer available will edit 1080p video perfectly well but if you must have the "best" you will be looking at nothing less than a MacPro.
Too many people get hung up about the equipment they use and blame it for any inadequacies . . . when the most important component is the operator.

Bandwidth for group video chats

Hi everyone
A few things I would like clarified about group video chats before I set one up.
1) Will everyone who joins the chat be able to see each other's videos? Or does only the host have access to see all the videos?
2) How much bandwidth is taken up by a group video chat, and does this affect the host only or all users?
3) What is the maximum number of users allowed on group video chats, including the host? I've seen various figures from 5 to 25.

I have an iMac with built-in iSight and I want to record a Mac-to-PC video chat through Skype.
Does anyone know how I can do this with Skype? iChat to AIM/PC has been very lame. So I use Skype.
Is there a third party program that makes this video chat into an .mov?
