Is it possible to always open Firefox to a known desktop location & size?

I have an environment where I open a number of windows for my application to specific locations on the desktop. The "help" features will open a Firefox browser instance with an appropriate local url. What I would like to do is specify the same initial starting location and size for the browser window upon startup.
Is this possible through a configuration or command line option? Is it possible to "lock" the position information that is saved on browser exit? I have tried the starting the browser specifying "-height nnn -width nnn" on the command line but this does not seem to do anything.
Thanks!

In that version it may still work if you use a JavaScript window.open call to specify the position.

  • Firefox always opens maximized and does not save window size unless I delete localstore.rdf

I use Linux MInt 13 with Cinnamon 1.6.7. Since the updates to Firefox 17 came through the update manager, the program always opens maximized, no matter what state I close it in. When I de-maximize, it comes up in a different size and position than the last time.
Some googling turned up that this can be due to a corrupted localstore.rdf file, and indeed the window sizing works properly if I delete that before starting.
It also works propoerly in safe mode, but even a fresh install without any add-ons, search engines or anything opens in window mode at first startup, but will always open in the same place as the first time after I move and close it, and if I resize it, it goes back to always opening maximized.
Any help to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

  • How Can I always open Firefox to FireFTP

Prior to upgrading to 8.0.1 I had Firefox save my FireFTP tab so that everytime I open Firefox it opens the FireFTP tab because I use ftp a lot. Now that I've upgraded I can not figure out how to do this. I can not set the homepage to FireFTP because when I drag the icon over to the home button I get the not allowed indicator.

Are you dragging the tab or the favicon on the location bar?
If you drag a tab then try to keep the CTRL key pressed while dragging.

  • Occasionally (but not always), opening Firefox freezes/crashes my entire system. Why is this? Win7 64bit

Every few uses of Firefox, I click the icon to open the program, and my system freezes. Ctrl+Alt+Delete does nothing, Ctrl+Shift+Esc does nothing. The mouse won't move, keyboard non-functioning. I have to do a hard reset of my system (hold power button until it shuts off, restart). No crash report is generated/shown/submitted, probably because my computer freezes before Firefox can even open.
This does not happen with any other program, only Firefox. Running Windows 7 64-bit.
I have to fill out this form on Internet Explorer, because now after restarting my computer firefox won't open at all, regardless of which icon i click.

I have had a similar problem with my system. I just recently (within a week of this post) built a brand new desktop. I installed Windows 7 64-bit Home and had a clean install, no problems. Using IE downloaded an anti-virus program, and then, because it was the latest version, downloaded and installed Firefox 4.0. As I began to search the internet for other programs to install after about maybe 10-15 minutes my computer crashes. Blank screen (yet monitor was still receiving a signal from computer) and completely frozen (couldn't even change the caps and num lock on keyboard). I thought I perhaps forgot to reboot after an update so I did a manual reboot and it started up fine.
When ever I got on the internet (still using firefox) it would crash after anywhere between 5-15 minutes. Since I've had good experience with FF in the past I thought it must be either the drivers or a hardware problem. So in-between crashes I updated all the drivers. Still had the same problem. Took the computer to a friend who knows more about computers than I do, made sure all the drivers were updated, same problem. We thought that it might be a hardware problem (bad video card, chipset, overheating issues, etc.), but after my friend played around with my computer for a day he found that when he didn't start FF at all it worked fine, even after watching a movie, or going through a playlist on Youtube.
At the time of this posting I'm going to try to uninstall FF 4.0 and download and install FF 3.6.16 which is currently on my laptop and works like a dream. Hopefully that will do the trick, because I love using FF and would hate to have to switch to another browser. Hopefully Mozilla will work out the kinks with FF 4 so I can continue to use it.
I apologize for the lengthy post. Any feedback would be appreciated, but is not necessary. I will try and post back after I try FF 3.16.6.

  • Each time I open firefox it creates a desktop short cut, which I then delete. Also, a window pop-ups asking for permission to run helper.exe. If I choose "NO" the shortcut is not created. How can I stop this?

  • Desktop shortcuts will no longer open firefox after a "shockwave" player software update

I can go to my email and click on links to web pages that open firefox, but not the desktop shortcuts. This happened after being prompted to install this software while trying to view a video on facebook.

A couple of quick things to try. Have you re-started your computer?
Have you tried on the desktop shortcuts - right click>open?
And a couple of questions. Is Firefox working properly via the URL Bar and the Search Bar?
    Do bookmarks open normally?

  • I have a lot of tabs saved so they open when I open Firefox, but the first tab always changes into my homepage, Google. Is there any way to stop this?

I have 20+ tabs always open on Firefox and it's set to remember them. However, when I open Firefox the first tab changes from what I had open there into my homepage, Google. I can use the "go backward" thing to get to the page I had there, but since it goes back to Google every time I restart the browser that gets tedious.
The only way to solve this that I've found is to just stop trying to use the first tab and let it be Google. However, I'd like some actual solution that stops this from happening if possible.

Thanks for the reply, it seems to have solved my issue.
My tabs are normal and unpinned, I just have Firefox set to open all my current tabs. Safe Mode didn't seem to have this issue, so I disabled Classic Theme Restorer. Several restarts didn't have problems, so I enabled it again and now this isn't happening anymore. Hopefully it stays gone for good and didn't just stop momentarily.
Edit. So as soon as I posted this, it started happening again. More testing definitely points to Classic Theme Restorer as the cause, so I'll have to investigate solutions on that end.

  • Firefox 17 always opens the tabs that were open the last time I closed it. I do NOT use restore history.

This has started happening since I upgraded to v.17. I close Firefox either with the Red X or the exit button on the dropdown menu. The next time I open, it displays whatever pages were open when I closed it.
I have always had Firefox use my Google account as my home page. It will not display.
It seems to me that in your quest to keep updated (how many this year...?) that you've lost a little something. This is very bad behavior and I'll just stop using FF altogether if it isn't fixed soon.

Make sure that Firefox closes properly and that there are no hanging Firefox processes left in the task manager.<br />
It is usually best to use the Exit item in the Firefox or File menu to close Firefox.
    See:
    *"Hang at exit": http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_hangs
*"Firefox hangs when you quit it": https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Firefox+hangs
You can check for problems with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder that store session data.
Delete the sessionstore.js file and possible sessionstore-##.js files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

  • I set firefox to open a filetype (.SGF) w/ a program but it doesn't, so I set it to save/ask and neither option works, it always opens file link in a new tab.

I've gone into the Options and set the .SGF file to open with Smartgo. It refuses to do that. Clicking on a link to a .SGF file simply opens the file as text in a new tab.
Since this didn't work, I tried to set firefox to download it instead, because then I can use the window's filetype associations to open it. It won't download the file unless I actually right-click and save-as on the link.
This is tedious when viewing lots of these files. I even set it to Ask me after I saw the the Download option didn't work. It doesn't Ask me. What is going on here?
Also I am using firefox 23
EDIT: It seems to be website specific. Some websites will allow me the option to open it in Smartgo, others will just open it in a tab as text. What is causing this discrepancy and can it be surmounted through browser settings?
An example website to showcase the issue is:
    http://igokisen.web.fc2.com/wr/lg.html
clicking on any of these links will not download, open, or ask about what you want to do with the file.

That happens if the server sends the file as text/plain.
You can see this if you open "Tools > Page Info > General": Content-Type: text/plain
Files send this way will always open in a tab.

Do you still get the problem in [[safe mode]] and with default themes, and all plugins disabled. Note common causes of crashes are malware, and versions of the software IDvault. (do you use IDvault ? - often provided by Comcast)

Do a malware check with a few malware scan programs.
You need to use all programs because each detects different malware.
