Is it possible to apply path styles to live paint objects or clipping paths?

Hey everybody! I tried searching for the answer online, but couldn't find what I was looking for...
I want to create an illustration with black outlines. Within these outlines I want to have some spots without outlines that stay clean within the lines. I have tried 3 options so far and have found a solution but it's far from ideal.
1. Create clipping masks for each element that has a spot on it and assign a stroke to the clipping path again after. However by creating the clipping path, the path styles dissapear. In this case I want to keep the pointed ends to the open path outlines (see top image).
2. Draw in the lines where the spots are and create a live paint object of the entire illustration. Then paint in the spots and other areas. However when I create this live paint object the lines again lose their applied styles and even 'end' at each intersection, creating nasty edges where the lines should go 'underneath' smoothly (see bottom image).
3. The option Im using now. Duplicate the path outlines and create clipping masks for the spots without strokes. Then put the stroked outline with the desired styles on top. The problem with this is that I have almost twice as much elements in my illustration now than I actually 'need'. And the styled outlines are not connected with the color underneath, so its very easy to accidentally move something around...
Does anybody know of an easier way to create this effect without all the hassle? Thanks in advance for you time!

I drew the dark beige shape by pasting a copy in front of the black stroke with light ebige fill. Used the pencil tool to redraw the bottom edge. Then fixed the leaks byusng a blending mode of darken.
I try to keep my illustrations simple using the fewest paths possible, to make future edits easy. Live paint creates a mess, so never use it as I like to control my compound paths and masks.

  • How do i apply one gradient across multiple live paint objects??

I need to apply a single gradient acros a number of live paint objects but am finding it annoyingly hard to find a way.  I know that normally, to apply a gradient across multiple objects, you would need to make them all into one compound path but does this apply to live paint groups in any way??  Can what i need to achieve actually be done??
    Thanks for any help given

    1. With the Live Paint selection tool, shift-select those shapes you want to unify with a gradient.
    2. Fill this (multi-shape) selection with your gradient. Now each shape is filled separately.
    3. With the gradient tool, drag across all of the selected shapes.
"Annoyingly hard." Is that different than "hard"?

  • Objects with Clipping Paths?

If I import an image (jpg) with clipping path and covert it to a button how can I get it to display properly?
    Thanks in advance.

The problem likely is caused by you combining images of varying resolutions (Image > Image Size).
I wuld recommend applying the Path as a Vector Mask in the original document (change Background Layers to regular ones by double-clicking them) and moving that into the container file.

  • Coordinates of paths that border live paint areas

I have several illustrator files that show drawings of neighborhood lot maps.  The lots are drawn from single lines where one long line creates the front of all the lots on the street.  Another line creates the back and smaller lines divide the lots on the sides.  Each line is on its own layer.   Each lot is labeled with a lot number.  I can create a live paint group and fill in each lot.  But this doesn't divide up the front, back and side lot lines for me and create a new shape with the front, back, and side lot lines drawn for each lot.  I am wondering if it's possible for a script to do this by:
    For each lot fill
Copy the segments of the lines on the front, back and side layers that overlap the lot fill.
Create a new group from those line segments.
This will create a duplicate lot shape that retains the front, back and side line definitions.
I am not a script writer but would like to hire somebody who could write this for me as it would make my world much easier if it can be done with a script!
    Thanks in advance.

Hi Rebecca, like I said, if the lines are not touching it won't work
    I made this
if the lines are not touching you won't be able to use the tool, we might need to think of doing something else.

  • Selecting paths of a Live Traced object

Hi, i'm sure i could do this before but for whatever reason it has stopped working. I have a black and white raster image, which i did a live trace too, which worked all well and good. But now when i want to go in and change the line-art produced by the tracing, it wont let me, it just keeps making the trace a big object that can only be moved around which im finding very frustrating. So how do i edit the fills created by a trace instead of just being able to move around the object as one large mass?
Also, another question, why is it that Illustrator is soo slow and closing, opening and saving documents compaired to somthing like Photoshop?

Ah right! YAY! Thanks very much That did the trick.
Yer i know, i'm not really looking at it like Flash, ists just i nocited when you double-click somthing it has that bar at the top of the image like flash does to tell you where you are in the image. I try to think of it more like Photoshop because thats what i have the most experience in, but i'm not so sure thats a good idea either...dispite the user interface tricking me into thinking they could be alike
Thanks so much i've been so frustrated at that today

  • Linking Photoshop EPS Files with Clipping Paths

    I'm running InDesign CS4 6.0.3 on a dual 2GHz G5 with Mac OS X 10.5.7.
We have a workflow that involves Photoshop EPS files being placed in InDesign with the object's clipping path set to Photoshop Path.  If the link is updated or relinked, InDesign no longer restricts the image to the boundaries of the path—either on screen or on export to PDF—even though choosing Object -> Clipping Path -> Options still shows the type set to Photoshop Path.  The only way that I have found to get the clipping path to fully apply to the image is to change the type from Photoshop Path to None and back to Photoshop Path, all while the Preview check box is on.  I tried different combinations of turning the Apply Photoshop Clipping Path option on and off at the time of initial placement and at the time of relinking with no effect on this behavior.
Assuming that using a format other than EPS and using transparency rather than clipping paths are not in play at the moment, my questions are:
    1.  Is this a know issue with InDesign CS4?  If so, can we expect a fix soon?
    2.  Is there anything that can be done on the user side that is less cumbersome than the workaround described above?

    @Mark
Photoshop PSD is fine for all raster work. But if you have vector masks, vector shapes or text in the file then saving as PDF would be the better option, you can choose to remove the white background when importing the PDF in the Show Options of the Place Dialog box.
And that's null point anyway, as soon as you open a photoshop EPS file in Photoshop it rasterises everything. So what I said isn't a viable solution for this project. But to keep in mind that PSD will output as raster only and PDF can have transparency and raster + vector data.
Just thought I'd through that out there.

  • What is the benefit of using clipping paths for a knock out?

I found a posting saying they need someone to knock out the background of a lot of images using clipping paths. My question is, WHY use a clipping path? I know the rule of not using a selection tool such as the Magic Wand and then turning it into a clipping path and I know why that is. But if all is needed is for the background to be knocked out, why can't we just use the selection tool in the first place and just knock out the background from there? What is the benefit of that clipping mask?

Usually the term Clipping Path refers to turning a path into a clipping path (in the paths panel) for use in older programs such as PageMaker that don't support transparency.
For example if one wanted to import a file into PageMaker and only have a certain part of the document visible, one would make a path (or selection) around the object
and turn the path (or selection) into a clipping path. Sorta the same results you see in photoshop using a layer mask or vector mask.
Also clipping paths are used in certain printing workflows.
Without seeing the posting it's hard to say what they meant and in photoshop 6 vector masks were labeled as Layer Clipping Paths not to be confused with real clipping paths.
Old versions of photoshop also used the term Group With Previous to denote Create Clipping Mask.

Anyway clipping masks and clipping paths are two different things in photoshop.

  • How do you make a circle clipping path in PhotoShop CS4?

All online help that I have found so far, shows me how to hand draw a complex shape. I just need a circle. I can do this in a few minutes in CorelDRAW and Illustrator.
You must be able to do it in PhotoShop. The end result is - I want it to work like a ship porthole. All you can see is what is behind the port window.
    Thanks!!!!

Does this help at all??? I skipped CS4
Can also just add the path in as a vector layer mask
Save the work path with a name once you have a saved path you can use the path palette's fly-out menu item "Clipping Path".

  • Create clipping path from selection

    I'm driving crazy!
Why this script does not work?
    tell application "Adobe Photoshop CS3"
    tell current document
    make work path selection
make clipping path (path item 1) flatness 0.5
    end tell
    end tell
The work path is created with no prob.
But the clipping one returns this error:
"The command »Define« is not avalaible"
    What's wrong?

    I've found the solution!
You have to name the work path to memorize it in order to be able to create the clipping path.
    This is the code:
    tell application "Adobe Photoshop CS3"
    tell current document
    make work path selection
set name of path item 1 to "Détourage"
make clipping path path item "Détourage" flatness 0.5
    end tell
    end tell

  • How to apply multiple styles for nested tags in XML?

Say you import this XML into InDesign:
    <Root>
      <strong>
        <em>Bolded and Italicized</em>
      </strong>
    </Root>
And you have two character styles, bold and italics, to map to strong and em tags respectively.
You will see that the text appears italicized not bolded and italicized as expected. Generally, only the innermost tag will get the style and will overwrite its parent styles.
Notice the XML is generated dynamically and tags order is not enforced. Also, there's an additional underline tag that can be nested with these two.
So far I have tried to use GREP styles (with paragraph styles), but these do not have effect in the XML tags.
Other possible options not tried yet:
Create new tags for every formatting combination. Not what I really want because I could en up with a lot of tags each one with a corresponding styles.
Create InDesign XML rules to apply character styles automatically based on the tags
Use character styles in the XML with the aid namespace referencing InDesign styles. Will this really work?
What do you suggest to go for? See any other option?
    Thank you in advance.
    Juan

I'd say that you should create tags not for appearances, but for semantic content. Specifying formatting styles in your XML betrays your lack of familiarity with the format, because the last thing you'd want to do would be to use HTML markup in the middle of your XML. If you have content that's supposed to be both bolface and oblique - say, a warning - then it's marked up as
<warning>Never refer directly to formatting in your XML markup, only to content types!</warning>
If I had a document that was written in the style you suggest - one with lots of overlapping local formatting - I'd look at developing a better style guide that told the writers that doing so would be bad form. Because, you know, many of the writers I deal with are addicted to forms of emphasis that do nothing useful whatsover for their readership - they only serve to overemphasize the authorial voice of the writers.
Maybe you could tell us why you need these overlapping forms of styling, and we could suggest other InDesign formatting tools (like line styles or nested styles) that would help you get the appearance you want without crowding styling markup into your XML - where, strictly speaking, it doesn't really belong.

  • Find.text Then apply Paragraph.Style

    Hi Everyone,
Is that possible we find the text then apply the paragraph style every find text.
We find [CN] then apply paragraph style "Chap_Num", Find next  [CT] apply PS "Chap_TTL" Find next [COX1] apply PS "Chap_Para".
Any trick find and apply para style one time.
Thank you! I appreciate your help and explanation Adv.

@s_ashok – you'll find the right methods and properties in the CHM file for InDesign CS2 at:
    http://www.jongware.com/idjshelp.html
    Just a few hints:
InDesign CS2 does not support GREP search/replace, so every line in your code that points to GREP does not work.
Further: "app.findTextPreferences" and "app.changeTextPreferences" were "app.findPreferences" and "app.changePreferences" in InDesign CS2. And then there were no "findChangeTextOptions" or any counterpart for that in CS2…
    That should get you running…
I have no InDesign CS2 installed to debug, so this is all I can say…

  • Help with applying "Next Style"

Is there anyway to assign a keyboard shortcut that would apply a paragraph style and it's associated next style? Or, alternatively, is there a way to create a paragraph style that ALWAYS applies the next style assigned to it?
In short, I'm really just looking for a faster way to accomplish this than highlighting three graphs, then right clicking and choosing from a context menu over and over again. I'm working on a list of businesses, with contacts, phone numbers, address, websites, etc. all included, and can't set up a loop (or don't know of a way to do one) because the length of the list is variable at times (some don't have a fax number, some don't have a website, some have multiple phone numbers, etc.). So I'm just looking for a more efficient way to do this than having to go through the context menu for each of the 500 entries.
    thanks in advance,

The data was placed from an excel spreadsheet, then I used find and replace to replace each tab stop (new cell) with a hard return, replaced soft returns with hard returns, and removed multiple returns and multiple spaces. All the data now is in the right order, it's just a matter of formatting.
I probably could find a way to do it using soft returns and nested styles, but I think making sure all the soft returns were in the right places and setting up the nested style options would take as much time as just going through applying next style manually through the context menu.
I've done more research since first posting, and it doesn't look like what I'm hoping for is possible without a script. Obviously I can create a shortcut for the first of the styles in each block (which I have), I just wish there was a way of telling it to apply the next style every time it's used. Oh well. Maybe in future versions. Thanks for the help though!

If there's a consistent, unique, and identifiable feature in each paragraph, a multiple GREP search-and-replace operation might work. For example, if each line is labeled, like fax, phone, zip, etc, these can be found by GREP and a paragraph can be applied with the replace. If there are no labels, perhaps content might work. For example, names would have at least two consecutive capitalized words, with the exception of celebs like Bono, Madonna, Sade, etc. Addresses would begin with a number, single or multiple digits, then perhaps at least one capitalized word or capitalized initial for direction (North, N, etc,) and/or end in designators like Av., Ave., Avenue, Street, Lane, Terrace, etc. Phone numbers fit a pattern. If phones always precede fax numbers, and there's only one phone, thats a findable pattern. Zipcodes, also.
Look into the FindChangeByList.jsx sample script included with InDesign; in the Scripts folder, findchangebylist.txt has detailed instructions. If you're not familiar with using ID scripts, search Google for "indesign scripts how to use tutorials" without quotes, for resources. If you're not familiar with GREP, search Google for "indesign find replace GREP" without quotes.
EDIT: I forgot to mention that FindChangeByList.jsx can certainly do the multiple manual operations you've described.

  • Is it possible to apply service packs to NW04s ABAP Sneak Preview?

Service Pack 7 to NW04s contains the DEMO_REGEX_TOY, which I'd like to install in my ABAP sneak preview system.  I have some questions about that:
    1.  Is it possible to apply maintenance to the Sneak Preview?
    2.  What service packages need to be isntalled to upgrade the sneak preview rel/level from 7/5 to 7/7: 6 and then 7, or just 7?  That is, are those service packs cumulative?
    3.  I am unable to download the service packs from https://service.sap.com using the download manager.  I get an error in the trace output that says, "Unable to Find Certification Path."  I have no idea what that means, or how to circumvent that problem.  Is there an alternative way to get the Service Packs?
Thanks for any help/guidance you all can provide!

    Thanks.
I did manage to download the packs.  For others who may have similar difficulties, the solution to my download problem was to specify (in IE) http://service.sap.com as a trusted site.  That allowed Download Manager to get the files.
I'll also add that I successfully applied packs 6 & 7, as well as SP 70020 (required to update SPAM before applying pack 7) and am now in business!
(Not sure I have the correct terminology for those - here's the file names I applied: KB70006.CAR, KB70007.CAR, KD70020.CAR)

  • Is it possible to apply a stroke effect to a Photoshop image in After Effects?

    Hello,
I've imported an image (a maze) from Photoshop into AE, and I want the image to appear as if it's being drawn in using the Stroke animation.  Is it possible to apply some kind of path along which the image can "fill in"--similar to how you can do this with text?  I didn't see a way to convert the image into a shape layer on which I could apply the Stroke effect, either.
Thanks to everyone who's been so helpful in these forums--I've gotten a lot of questions answered by y'all!
    meredith

Followed everything you said up until using the solid as a track matte, where I got a little confused.
The effect worked more or less how I wanted when I set the starting value of the stroke at 100% and set track matte of my original image to Alpha Inverted.  When I did this, it gave the effect that the solid was disappearing to reveal the original image, if that makes any sense.
Is there anyway to adjust the brush shape?  Right now it is a circle, is it possible to change it into a square?  The circle brush gives an awkward edge line as the lines of the image begin to appear with the stroke effect.
    Thanks!
