Is it possible to backup between 2 external drives?

I've searched answers in the community and can't find one that specifcally addresses my needs.
Let me first provide some context for my question.
I am a writer and author, and plan to move from an early 2009 iMac to a MacBook Pro Retina. I plan to use it as a desktop with an external monitor and keyboard and have the benefit of occassional using it as a portable on it's own. The storage space is more limited than on my iMac. Therefore, I'm planning to have a lot of my files such as photos etc on the external drive and probably have some of my documents stored on it as well.
Given that my writing is my living, I am paranoid about losing data. I currently back up to an external drive that I use for Time Machine, and also using other means back up to two additional external drives. In addition my writing backsup to cloud storage.
This may seem a bit paranoid but I did have the experience a few years back where the drive failed on my Mac AND the external drive failed. So now I take care because a loss could mean losing years of reasearch and work.
So, my question is, with now files being stored off on an external drive, is there software that will automatically synch, back up or replicate one external drive to another? This would be in addition and supplemental to backing on on a drive reserved for Time Machine.

Hi Gemma,
This happens because your original IE window is being used to display the second web site, thereby removing the first.
To have two open web sites you need two IE windows so that you can switch between them. In effect you open the second web site in a new IE window. If you click on 'file' then 'new -> window' this will open a second IE window where you can browse independently of the first window. You can have multiple windows open in this way.

I'm trying to drag a Backups.backupdb folder from its original external HD (LaCie 1TB) to a new external HD (Western Digital 2TB RAID 1). I'm getting this error message:

Once you do that Time Machine starts to calculate sizes and all that to make the first copy. Skip that fist backup and now you will be able to copy the backup to the disk. No, that will not copy the backups properly. TM backups use a rather complex file structure, involving multiple hard links, and the Finder will not copy them correctly.
V.K.'s advice is correct: you can duplicate one TM disk/partition to another one, but you must click the +Erase Destination+ box.
To do what you want, partition the new disk first. TM works best if it has it's own, exclusive partition anyway. Then duplicate the old disk/partition to the TM partition you just made on the new drive.
See items #3 and 6 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum for info on why you need to do the partition, and how to do it. Then use the instructions in item #18 to do the duplication.

Using Time Machine to Backup an External Drive (RAID 1)

Is it possible to backup an external drive to another external drive using Time Machine in Mountain Lion?
The following diagram describes what I want to do. I am basically trying to use Time Machine as an external RAID 1 system. However, I don't want to buy a RAID 1 box. I want to have control of TWO OR MORE time machine setups. I don't want to backup my OS every time. I simply want to backup one external drive to another external drive. The drives are 2TB each, so the advice to buy a big hard drive to back everything up on won't work. Also, I am often swapping drives and would like to use this system for all of my projects and all of my drives. Any help would be great. Thanks for your time.
NOTE: I am on Lion and wanted to know if this was possible before upgrading.

To be clear, TM can back up your external drive perfectly well, provided it's in MacOS format. What it can't do is back up the external drive alone to one destination, and everything else to a different destination.
As for what you should use instead of TM, I don't really have an opinion. SuperDuper and Carbon Copy Cloner are well regarded. You need to make some decisions about backup strategy before you choose a backup method. TM makes incremental backups, so you can revert to any of several earlier versions of a file. Those third-party products can do that too, though not as efficiently as TM. Also bear in my mind that a single backup is inadequate. You need more than one backup to be safe, and to be truly safe, at least one backup must be stored off-site at all times.

Is it possible to keep an external drive in standby when computer wakes up?

I've recently started using SuperDuper! as my backup application. I've setup scheduled backups to an external hard drive. I keep this drive unmounted, yet still powered on and connected to my computer. The schedule in SuperDuper! mounts the drive to perform a backup and unmounts it when finished. While the drive is not in use, it is in standby mode, which is exactly what I want. There's no sense in having it running full throttle when I'm not using it. I have "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" checked in the System Preferences. Unfortunately this has proven to not be the answer to my issue.
My question revolves around if there is a way to keep this external drive in standby mode when I wake my computer from sleep mode? When I wake my computer, the external drive also wakes. Though it remains unmounted and I am not attempting access it, it still powers up and out of standby mode. I'd love a way to prevent this from happening. Is it possible?
Understandably, the only other time (besides during backup) the external drive is knocked out of standby mode is when I open Disk Utility. It makes sense because DU is actually attempting to communicate with any connected drives. I'm confused on why waking the computer also wakes the external.

Thanks for your comments. I know the computer attempts to communicate with all attached devices. I guess I was hoping that there was a way for the computer to know the external drive was connected and that it could communicate with it without having to actually spin-up the external disk.
Stanley, you're right. I shouldn't worry about this. I suppose the reason is because the external is my only backup, and I'd like to maintain the integrity of it so it lasts as long as possible. But, on the other hand, it is a hard disk. They're made to spin...

iTunes Error Code -36. Unable to BackUp to External Drive.
As of yesterday 9th Jan,2009, I am unable to backup up all
my 79Gb iTune tracks unto my external Iomega MiniMax Hard drive.
Which is very odd, as I never had a problem doing likewise
in the past.Each time it went smoothly and as planned.
Drag and drop procedures.
Here is the error message I keep getting every time I
try to execute the transfer:-
The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data
in"FBCIndex" could not be be read or written.
(Error code- 36)
Tried all previous soloutions including repairing and fixing
Mac Hard Drive using Disc utilities.
Should I do an Archive and Install or perhaps deleting the

Can anyone explain why, after upgrade to Yosemite, Time Machine is no loger working? Backup on external drive stops few seconds after it has started. What can I do?

Yes, many people do just that. Copy your iTunes folder to the external drive. Once done, open iTunes with Option held down and select the new location of the library file.

What is the best way to backup my external drive?

Since it seems you cannot backup an external drive via Time Capsule (as far as I can tell) does anybody have a good solution for backing up an external drive? I keep all of my media (roughly 230GBs) on an external drive but I am not backing it up as of now for lack of a solution.

If the data is from your computer then you have a copy with your Time Machine. You can use Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to clone the hard drive.

Possible? Password protecting external drives

Is it possible to make all external drives password protected to make changes to, or even access? I can't find anything obvious particularly in "disc utility" or elsewhere.

No, OS X provides no such facility. You can get third-party software that can do that. Look for it at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
What you can do instead is to create an encrypted disc image using Disk Utility and put the image on the external drive. Then move whatever you want secured onto the disc image file. Delete the originals. When the disc image is mounted it will require a password to access whatever is stored on it. If you want to be able read and write data on the disc image then make it a read/write image file when you create it.

How to stop Time Machine from creating entirely new backup of external drive?

I've included an external drive to be backed up into Time Machine. For a few days, the drive was disconnected, however, so only Macintosh HD was getting backed up. I recently re-added the external drive. However, now it appears that since the external wasn't included in the most recent backups, it's decided to re-backup the entire drive.
Is there any way to prevent it from backing up the entire external drive and instead just backup the changes made, or is that not possible because there is a gap in the backups made for the external?

First, the amount that TM says it's going to back up is not necessarily the amount it will back up. You'll only know that when the backup finishes.
I haven't tried this myself, but it may be that after you exclude a volume, TM loses continuity with the previous snapshot. In that case, future backups should be incremental, as long as you don't exclude the volume again.

Time Machine Backup on External Drive Stops working after one week

I'm having a problem with the Time machine backup on an external LaCie drive. After e few days, it suddenly locks up, not performing any backup unless I force-restart my computer and switch off the drive.
*My setup*:
- iMac Alu 24 with MacOS X 10.5.1 and 3Gb RAM
- LaCie external drive 320 Gb - design by Porsche, connected to the FW 400 port of the iMac --> this is the one used for the bakcups, it is left powered on at any time (never switched off)
- 2 other LaCie external drives 160 Gb - design by Porsche, connected to the FW 400 port of the iMac --> they are generally switched off
TimeMachine is setup to its default scenario, backing up automatically on the external 320 Gb.
*Daily usage* :
- the iMac is set to boot automatically at 6:45
- I usually switch it off manualy at the end of the day
- Screen Saver is set to launch after 5 minutes
- sleep time for computer is set to 1:30 hour
- display sleep 15 min
- hard disk are set to sleep whenever possible
First symptom : the computer never goes to sleep
Second symptom : I had the following problem already twice since I installed Leopard, once with the original install and today with the updated 10.5.1 version:
- automatic backups went fine during the whole day : 7:45 8:45 9:45...
- then an automatic backup starts but never finishes

Backup to external drive already used by Windows

Total Mac newbie who wants to back up a MacBook Pro.
I'd like to use one of the external drives I already own. The trouble is, they've been used for Windows storage already and so have that file system on them. They also have files and/or system backups I'd like to preserve.
Other posts here seem to say I can't even back up files from the Mac (let alone system images) unless I format the drives for OS X and use some kind of middleware on my PCs. I'd like to avoid that -- I still have 6 PCs running Windows and just the one MBP, so far.
Can someone help me understand what's really possible and/or recommended?

Drives used for Time Machine require GUID partition scheme.
These must have either the GUID or Apple Partition Map Partition Map Scheme, and either theMac OS Extended (Journaled) or Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, journaled) Format. On Lion, you can encrypt them. See question #5 for details and formatting instructions.

Windows requires that GUID partition scheme not be obviously present.
You can store other files on a Time Machine drive, but Windows will not write to GUID drives.
New drives are cheap. Or combine some of your Windows stuff to free up a drive.

Is it possible to connect an external drive to the time capsule that I could use to store and access my primary iTunes files?

I would like to move my music files to an external drive that my iMac iTunes could access wirelessly and I'm wondering if it is possible to do so through connecting a drive to my Time Capsule.

This can be done....but if you move your iTunes Media folder to the drive that is connected to the Time Capsule, you might first want to think about how you will backup these important files.
Time Machine cannot backup the files back to the Time Capsule, so you will need to use a commercial backup application like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to copy the files back to the Time Capsule drive.
As long as you plan to add a hard drive, you might want to consider an alternate plan:
Connect a hard drive directly to your Mac using USB or FireWire and move the iTunes Media Library there. Then, Time Machine will back up both your Mac and the hard drive, so you have original copies on one drive and backups on another.
Whatever you decide, be sure to follow the correct instructions to move the iTunes Media Folder. You cannot simply drag and drop.

I have similar a similar question but am confused by the response.
Right now I have a 1 TB HDD in my IMac (about 200GB full), along with a number of external HDs == 911 GB (out of 1 TB) & 73 GB (out of 320 GB) used.
Currently I have a 1TB ext drive that I use to backup my main computer HD to Time Machine. I really want to back up the other drives too, but am worried about disc usage, and having a big enough external drive to have everything on.
Is it possible to have time machine split backups across multiple discs?
Ideally I would buy a 3 TB drive for TM backups and just select EVERYTHING that I want to do, but i don't know if USB ones exist, and they are probably expensive.
Let me know if you have ideas. Thanks!
