Is it possible to backup your iPod songs or at least make a list of them?

Basically, I was stupid and when I added music to my iPod, I would just delete it.. so now I have a bunch of music on my iPod, which is great, but no library.
Now my iPod is coming up on it's 2nd year and it does crash from time to time, so if it were to suddenly die on me, I would completely lose my gigantic collection of music AND album art that I worked pretty hard on.
So I'm just wondering if there is any way to make a text file with the song titles/artists, or even just a way to back up my current songs on the iPod (make a Library out of them).

Every program I know of does a file copy from the iPod to the hard drive. Doing so keeps all the ID3 tag data stored in the file. However, iTunes stores other data which isn't part of the ID3 standard including play counts, ratings, etc. Some or all of this data may be lost since you've not been keeping an iTunes library. Whether the album art will be kept depends on whether your album art was embedded in the song files or whether it was placed on the iPod using Apple's scheme which copies a single picture for use with all the songs. In any case, as long as your music is part of Apple's iTunes store inventory you'll get it back easily.

Connect your iPod to your computer. When you get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod.
The transfer of content sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

Photos inside the camera roll are part of the backup, they are not stored on your PC if you don't transfer them manually:

  • Is it possible to connect your ipod touch to a computer that doesn't have iTunes installed on it?

My computer that I usually use has recently died and I cannot access my iTunes.
Is it possible to connect my ipod touch to a computer that does not have iTunes just so that I can get my content off my ipod?

    Hello,
    What you mean by content?
But anyways you will need to install iTunes to the other computer for syncing/backuping etc.
Just download and install on the other computer.
And if it's not a HDD problem with you old computer you can maybe get back even some backups if you had.
    Hope it helps,

  • TS3992 How do you backup your iPod to iCloud?

I just got a new computer and I'm trying to transfer my iTunes library from my old computer to my new one. I want to back my iPod up to iCloud to possibly be able to do this. I keep getting an "Account not verified' message. When I check my e-mail to verify the account, there are no messages that would allow me to do so. I've checked the e-mail address and password numerous times and they are accurate. I don't know what else to try. Any Suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

  • Is it possible to sync your ipod to a new computer?

Just wanted some info on uploading your ipod music to a computer, and if yes how can if be done.
    XPS   Windows XP

Essentially what you need to do is get the music files from the G4 to the Macbook.
Because both computers are Macs this is a little easier. A few ways to do this (I don't believe all of these are covered in the article) are:
    1. Use an external drive (could be your iPod) to move the files
    2. If both computers are connected to the same network, turn on file sharing and connect to the G4 from the Macbook.
    3. Use firewire transfer mode. Connect the two computer with a firewire cable and reboot the G4 while pressing T. The G4's HD should show up as an external disk on the Macbook.
2 and 3 should be the quickest as the files only need to be copied once. Further instructions on these methods are available in the Mac knowledge base
HOWEVER, if all the songs on the iPod are purchased from the ITMS, you can plug the iPod into the Macbook and from iTunes select File -> Transfer purchases from iPod. This only works with ITMS songs, not songs from CDs or other sources.

  • Is it possible to use your iPod Touch 4th Gen from your computer?

I have an iPod Touch 4th Gen. And I broke the screen, the sent it in to get fixed... the people put the screen on wrong. It worked for a while, then it stopped working. I was trying to use it one day, and I accedentaly put on the curtain mode. So now, I have an iPod Touch with the I can't use. I haven't sent it in yet though. So in the mean time I've been trying to find a way to use my iPod without actually using my iPod. If you get what I'm saying.
Does anyone know how I can use my iPod without actually "using it"?
    Please you'd save my life!

With the exception of using a docking station to play music, there is no way to "use" your iPod through your computer.
And what the heck is "curtain mode"?

  • How do you backup your ipod to a new computer?

I just got a new computer and hooked my Ipod up to it thinking I could readily back it up to my computer.  I keep getting a message that it's already linked to another computer - that would be the dead computer.
Is there any way to easily make this transfer.  Almost 100% of my music is from my CD collection and I really do not want to have to load them again.

  • Is it possible to  copy your ipod playlist on to your computer/Itunes

I inadvertently erased all my playlists on my 4th gen ipod and had to reload. However now my playlist that I had fine tuned over the years is not the same. Is there any way to copy the play lists on my ipod onto my computer so that I will have a backup in case this happens again? It would be so nice to just drag and drop the whole works and not have to go through 22g worth of tunes one at a time.

    Hey rhobotz,

  • Possible solution if your iPod isn't synchronizing!!!

A lot of problems mentioned here are iPods which are not properly synchronizing with iTunes.
My specific problem was that certain files couldn't be copied to my iPod Classic and that would messup my iPod.
The problem is corrupted music files. Check this by trying to copy a file from your hard drive to an external hard drive. If you get an error message than your file is corrupted and needs to be replaced by a backup or by a new download.
    Hope this helps.

You can just change the drive letter of the ipod to something not ever in use like "Z". This will do the same thing without worrying about the second computer conflicting.
There is a knowledge base article on how to change the drive letter of the ipod if you don't know how.

  • Is it possible to restore your iPod without plugging into iTunes?

Hello - having great difficulty doing anything to my iPod through iTunes. Is there anyway in which I can restore my iPod without going through iTunes?
    (iTunes already re-installed)
    Thanks

    Thanks for the response.
    Ok - what happens..
1)iPod appears to work fine as a standalone player.
2)iTunes works perfectly without the iPod connected
3)Put the two together and it's **** on earth!...
I can't sync or make any changes through iTunes, without iTunes freezing (and that includes the restore iPod option.)
I may not actually need to restore my iPod - however the other option that comes to mind is throwing the damed thing out the window....so any help gratefully received..
