Is it possible to boot up a 2014 macbook pro from a cd or usb?

Hello everyone!
I am thinking about buying a Macbook Pro ( latest version ), but I work on other operating systems like Linux and Windows (I use various distributions of linux).Would it be possible to boot a mac pro from an external disk unit or a USB stick with linux on it?
Have a nice day,
Alexjaco

OS X can be installed on a USB flash drive, but not a DVD. There are two ways to do this. One way you simply put the OS X installer on an 8 GB flash drive. This can be used to boot the computer, run any disk utility routines, and install OS X. The second way is to install a minimal OS X onto a 16 GB flash drive. This can be used to boot the computer, erase its drive, then clone the system from the flash drive to the computer's drive
In either case it's essential that after you download the OS X installer from the App Store you must copy it from the Applications folder to you Downloads folder or some other location. The OS X installer automatically deletes itself upon completing the installation, but only if the installer is in the Applications foldeer.

  • Can't boot 10.5.8 MacBook Pro from Disk Warrior while restarting using "c"

    Hello,
I am helping a friend maintain her 2008 MacBook Pro (10.5.8). Have safe-booted several times, and repaired permissions.
Since she is having minor issues, I brought over my Disk Warrior v. 4.1 (CD rev. 42) which has done wonders for other Leopard Macs.
Her MacBook Pro just refuses to boot from the Disk Warrior CD when I hold down the "c" key while re-starting. It starts as usual from its OS. This has never happened to me before. So I cannot use Disk Warrior on her comp, as far as I know.
Whenever I have used this Disk Warrior CD on mine and other 10.5.8 computers, and booted holding down "c" key, everything goes swimmingly.
Grateful if anyone can anyone offer a suggestion...
Could it be her drive, her logic board, my not re-setting PRAM on her computer? Or a total mystery?
    Many thanks,
    Neil

Most likely because you have a version of DW that cannot boot that model. The current version of DW is 4.2. You can download DW 4.2 and create a new CD but that requires burning a new CD as part of the updating process.
Is there any particular reason why you cannot repair the disk using Disk Utility? Just boot from the Leopard installer DVD or the original installer DVD that came with the computer, then use DU from within the installer (Utilities menu) to repair the hard drive (repair, don't verify.)

  • I'm buying a 2014 MacBook Pro from eBay; after I purchase it can I go to the Apple Store and buy AppleCare for it?

I am looking at MacBook Pro's on eBay and I began to think: What if I purchase it and something is wrong with it? I thought about AppleCare and wondered it that would cover it. I know that if something is wrong with the computer I got from eBay I should contact the seller, but some sellers don't allow returns if something is messed up and I don't want to be stuck in THAT situation.

AppleCare can only be purchased within one year after the original sale. It must be purchased before the one year standard warranty expires. Anyone can purchase it unless the seller has already purchased it. Then it is available to you since the warranty travels with the computer, not the owner.
A big risk buying on eBay is that you may get a stolen computer or possibly nothing. Take care.

You can try using Screen Sharing in the Sharing preferences. Or try a third-party utility such as ScreenRecycler.

  • 15" i7 Macbook Pro from early 2011.takes the mac laptop two or three tries to boot successfully. It would turn on, show gray screen, shut down, turn on again, show gray screen, shutdown, and then turn on, show gray screen, before it can finally get

    Hello All,
I have a 15" i7 Macbook Pro from early 2011. The past few weeks, it has been getting increasingly difficult to get on my computer. It takes the mac laptop two or three tries to boot successfully. It would turn on, show gray screen, shut down, turn on again, show gray screen, shutdown, and then turn on, show gray screen, before it can finally get to the dark gray log-in screen. Even when I finally get logged in to start working, thinking it would be okay now, it shuts down randomly.
I've ruled out the possibility of a software problem because I've just done a clean re-install of Mac OS X Mavericks on my computer just yesterday.
I did upgrade the RAM recently, about a month and a half ago, from 4GB to 16GB, I went to the apple store four days after that upgrade to have them do a hardware test, and clean the inside of my laptop, which helped with previous heat issues. When they did the hardware test, the hardware was all registered as fine from their system.
I've tried resetting the SMC, PRAM, and doing the internet recovery hardware test, but to no avail. I thought I could at least find out what parts needed to be replaced from the hardware test but it seems that when the hardware test is almost finished, the computer just shuts down, So I am unable to see the results.
My computer is also having battery issues, under battery condition, it says "replace now," parts have been ordered, waiting for arrival. But if the battery health is low, it should still boot up fine, it would just hold a significantly less charge.
Could this be a hard drive issue?
Has anyone had similar symptoms and how was it resolved?
Does anyone know what I can do to alleviate this issue?
I haven't had time to take it to Apple because I'm currently taking a 21 credit semester academically. I'm an art and design student so my computer is basically the bane of my existence. Help! Any constructive advice is welcomed!
Thank you so much for your input!

  • Best way to transfer from mid 2012 macbook pro retina to new mid 2014 macbook pro

I'm updating to a new 2014 macbook pro.  am i better off using a migration assistant from one to another, or restoring from Time Machine (with ethernet to thunderbolt adapter)?  Or some other method?
    thanks,
    ptkmac

I have used the Setup Assistant during setup of OS X and I would use a current Time Machine back up to point to during Setup Assistant. I have also manually copied data and apps over from another Mac while on my network. Both take some time and both were equally successful.
So, you have a choice after backing up your current Mac:
Have both Macs on your network, run setup on your new Mac and afterwards manually copy files from the old to the new Mac.
Run setup on your new Mac and use the Setup Assistant to migrate from a Time Machine back up all your user accounts, data and settings.
Question on a similar line except I wanted to partition the drive that came on the new Mid 2014 MBPro (2.8 GHz, 1 TB SSD, 16 GB RAM).  Migrating from the old computer b/u seems pretty straight forward, but once the drive that come with the new MBPro is partitioned an install of OS X needs to be done.  Here's what I did, I installed the Mavericks I had purchased from the App Store when it came out.  Now, from reading here in the Communities, some have indicated the shipped Mavericks version is not the same as the App Store version.  Now that the shipped Mavericks is history (after the partitioning) should I try somehow to restore that from the Recovery HD/process?  Or ???
This isn't my first rodeo, so I just went full speed ahead and did the partitioning and copied the former MBPro (early 2011) disk created by Carbon Copy Cloner over to the new boot partition.  It was suggested that an Erase and Install OS X could be done, but I don't see how that would bring the shipped Mavericks version for this new MBPro, unless the Recovery HD suite of utilities would go and grab that from Apple via Internet; which would be fairly lengthy since it would be via Internet connection.
I'll back up a bit here for a second... I"m not experiencing any problems (kernel panics, etc.) but not sure if the system now is as it should be.  Hindsight being what it is I should have made a CCC copy of the shipped volume of Mavericks; if this is an issue.
The system seems to be running fine, and some of my "issues" (for lack of a better term) could be just the way the new Mid 2014 MBPro is handling things - like memory allocation (i.e. using close to the 16 GB most of the time) and kernel_task using 1 GB of memory - more at times).  Possibly if I wasn't a regular watcher of Activity Monitor I would just be plodding along, since the system seems to be working fine.  Occasionally some apps or their processes take a longer than I feel is what should be normal to do, hence looking at the Activity Monitor to see what is going on.
Sorry for the long ramble.  Trying to see if I really have a problem that would necessitate a reinstall of Mavericks via Recovery HD; which could take up some valuable computer work time (which I'm also using posting here <grin>).
Thanks in advance for any ideas, suggesting, etc.  Also, to the person who posted to my other question on this another thanks for those suggestions.  None of which I've done - yet.
Take care all - and thank you again for  all the great minds who make these Community Boards work.

  • Mid 2014 Macbook Pro Hard Freezing due to GPU Hang...

    Hello,
I have a Mid-2014 Macbook Pro (10.10.2) that I have been using for a few weeks now. I keep on getting random hard freezes on Google Chrome. Before, this used to happen about once a week, but now it seems to be happening much more often (like once to twice per day) - I haven't updated my software recently so this could possibly be an issue. When I had this exact same GPU hanging issue on my first Macbook Pro (bought 2 months ago), I had it exchanged for this one, but now I am encountering the same problem! I tried looking at Console.app and got a System report telling me that I had a "GPU reset"and also showed an "Intel GPU Hang Summary" with a "hang analysis". I know this is most probably relating to the GPU to some extent, but I'm not sure what exactly is the cause of this hanging. Any ideas? Also, any way to get around the hanging problem (I can just decide not to use Chrome anymore, but that would be a band-aid solution at best).
    Thanks!

Could this really be a hardware issue at this point?
The best way to determine that is to have it tested.

  • Is there a way to install OS X Snow Leopard on the 2014 MacBook Pro Retina?

I have a 2014 MacBook Pro Retina that I purchased a few months ago. Is there a way to install OS X Snow Leopard on it? I do not have a DVD drive and do not own OS X Snow Leopard discs. I do have a retail copy .dmg file of it though. Can I copy it over to a USB flash drive and install it on a partition of my hard drive? How do I do that, if it's possible? Can you list the steps? I would appreciate it!
    Thanks!
    P.S. Please don't ask why.

Presumably, you want Snow Leopard in order to be able to run PowerPC applications.  If so, more information can be found here:

You would need the original installation disks or files for the Adobe software to get it onto your iMac, and having it on two computers may not be allowed by your university's licensing. Talk to whoever issued the MacBook.
As to the music, just copy it over to the MacBook, either via Home Sharing, file sharing, or an external storage medium (hard drive, USB flash drive, etc.).

  • Whats the maximum resolution resolution supported @ 60 Hz on an external display for mid 2014 macbook pro retina 13 inch ?

whats the maximum resolution supported @ 60 Hz on an external display for mid 2014 macbook pro retina 13 inch ?

I don't know where you found 1920x1080, but that isn't the max. The INTERNAL display can even support more than that.
The maximum resolution is really hardware based, and since Thunderbolt 2 has a Mini displayport connector (Mini Displayport 1.2), the max resolution for Mini Displayport is 4k (3840x2160).
PLEASE NOTE: Not all adapters can support that resolution, most monitors that can run 4k @60Hz have Displayport 1.2 (The most recent revision), Mini Displayport 1.2, and HDMI 2.0. DVI dual link can run 4k, but only 24-30Hz, depending on the monitor.
    Hope this helps!!

If GTA IV believes the system is under specification even though the computer is powerful enough to run the game with higher settings, the following will fix this problem.
This will work if your problem looks like this: "resource usage 230/60" and you can't change any other setting
    Just follow the steps:
    Step 1: Create a text file named ‘commandline.txt’ (without the " ")
Step 2: Put the following statement inside it:
    i5 users: -availablevidmem 18.0 (with the -)
    i7 users: -availablevidmem 22.0 (with the -)
Step 3: Open the main GTAIV folder (C/ program files (86)/ rockstar games/ GTA IV) and copy the commandline.txt file into it.
Step 4: locate the file "GTAIV.exe" (in GTA main folder)
Right click the file and select Properties
Under the shortcut tab, you will see an area that says Target
Modify the Target adding the command line after the last quotation mark (just add the statement you added in commandline.txt)
    (remember, i5 users: -availablevidmem 18.0 / i7 users: -availablevidmem 22.0)
It should look something like this:
Make sure to add space between " and -"
I hope This helps, although late cx

Is it possible to install MS-Windows on MacBook Pro as the only OS, using all the space of the SSD, by de-isntalling thus completely the Mac OS?

    Yes.
    but
You will have to erase the drive completely and install Windows, you can't achieve it just by deleting OSX
I do not recommend that you do it.
