Is it possible to bring a non-Verizon unlock iPhone 5 to the Verizon network?

Is it possible to bring a non-Verizon unlock iPhone 5 to the Verizon network?
I spent over an hour and a half talking and/or waiting on Verizon customer service yesterday and another 52 minutes today.  At the end of all that, Verizon's representative told me that even though my iPhone 5 is unlocked, I can't bring it to the Verizon network.
During this time, I was told several times that my phone had to be added to the Verizon database.  Yesterday when I was told this, I was told it would take 30 to 60 minutes.  Today I was told that it might take two to three days but that even after the change to the database goes through, I still would not be able to use my phone on Verizon's network.

No not possible. Verizon doesn't import IMEIs into their database. Also the unlocked iPhone 5 does not have a CDMA radio so it wouldn't connect anyway.  You need to use a GSM carrier for that iPhone to work.

A no-contract sales price does not mean unlocked.
Apple is now selling an officially unlocked iPhone in the U.S. which has nothing whatsoever to do with AT&T unlocking iPhones. It is up to the carrier and the carrier only to officially unlock an iPhone that was sold as carrier locked with the carrier - in this case sold as carrier locked with AT&T. This may change one day, but at the present time AT&T does not unlock an iPhone for any reason or under any circumstances.

    What to Bring with You
Your old mobile phone, if you’re replacing it.
Social Security number of the account holder.
    Valid government-issued photo ID.
Carrier account password, if you have one.
    Your Apple ID and password.

According to Apple's list (link above) you will probably want to pick up a Sprint or US Cellular model. HOWEVER, as I mentioned above I know that the Verizon iPhones come unlocked from the factory (assuming it will be the same for iPhone 6 and 6+). I DO NOT KNOW if the Sprint and US Cellular models come unlocked. But I am sure some quick internet research will lead you to the answer.
I think your goal would be to get a Sprint or US Cellular version. Also I believe a law was just recently passed that allows someone to have a phone unlocked by the carrier no questions asked. So even if the Sprint and US Cellular iPhones are locked you can have them unlocked.

Would be possible to buy a contract free unlocked iphone 5s from USA & use it overseas over a GSM network?

    Yes.
Only Apple sells officially unlocked iPhones in the US, & the T-Mobile labeled iPhone is officially unlocked if putchased from Apple.
But, your warranty/support will only be valid in the US, & the phone will most likely not support LTE anywhere other than North America.
Any issues, no authorized source, outside of the US, will touch the phone, or help you in anyway.

  • I have an iPhone 5 on the Sprint Network.  My iMessaging seems to work when it wants to when sending a message to others on the Sprint Network.  I can send an iMessage to someone on Verizon during the same time and it works just fine?

I have iPhone 5 on Sprint.  My husband is also on Sprint and my iMessage to him seems to work whenever it wants.  I can iMessage to friends who have Verizon at the exact same time I am trying to iMessage my husband and the iMessages will go to and from the Verizon friends just fine, but not to my husband.  With him its not even pretending to send our messages as iMessages.  The send bar isn't even blue to him.  To me this seems like an issue with the Sprint Network, but I wanted to see if anyone had had the same/simmilar issues and it ended up being the phone.

I can tell you that with Sprint their coverage area isn't as good as Verizon or AT&T.
Are you sending these imessage while on wifi or cellular data?  Also your husband would need to be in a good coverage area.
Usually when imessage is unavailable it will send it as a text.  Does your husband receive your imessage as a text?

No, you can't upgrade, except by selling your 4S and using the money towards a 5.

  • Possible to add a non-Apple signal booster to Airport Extreme to improve signal strength?

    Good day to you all.
This might seem like a weird question. I've just rencently purchased my first ever MacBook Pro to enter the Mac family
With it, I also bought an AirPort Extreme. Like others today, I've had a lot of trouble trying to get the thing set up. I somehow managed to get it working, but the signal strength in the far room of the house is too weak.
I suppose I could just get a better Wi-fi adapter for that computer to pick up the better signals, but, my question is:
I have a signal booster (repeater?) from Cisco/Linksys that I used for my Cisco/lynksys router. It would connect to the network and bounce that signal from that base off to improve the signal strength to the rest of the house. It worked like a charm. So, my question is is it at all possible to connect a non-apple booster like this to the network to bounce the signal?
I assume it would work, but thought I'd ask anyway just to be sure; to check if anyone else knows about this. I'm going to try sometime soon if this works, but would love to know what others think.
Thank you very much for your time and help!!

Ah, yes. Good idea. Well, in a few year's time, we'll probably move on to better devices, but, for those who do have something that isn't Apple...I encourage you to try it.
I'm using the Cicsco/Lynksys Range Extender that I believe is simply called RE1000; mine was refurbished, too.
Anyway, it came with a set up disc that I'm not entirely sure if it works on a Mac computer. I didn't try it.
You'll run the set up disc (somehow), make sure you follow the instructions on the screen, and it should allow the RE1000 to find the network you created using the AirPort. Once the set up is complete, it'll ask you to move the RE1000 to another electrical outlet in your house that can take the signal and bounce it to a wider area of your house, and presumably the neighborhood (secure your network).
Seemed to work without a hitch. So, if you're not using an Apple range extender (another AirPort type thing), hopefully this helps you. It did work for me, otherwise I would have taken the AP Extreme back for a refund haha

  • Using Verizon SIM Card abroad with non-Verizon GSM phone

I have a Verizon phone, which is not a global phone (iPhone 4, doesn't have a SIM card). I am going on a trip to Europe and want to use Verizon service there, so people can call me on my US Verizon number, but I don't want to upgrade my phone to a global Verizon phone. Would it be possible to order or buy a SIM card from Verizon, activate it such that it becomes associated with my Verizon account and then, when I'm in Europe, stick it to one of non-Verizon unlocked GSM phones? Will I be able to roam this way with my Verizon number? Will my regular Verizon phone still work when I come back?
    Thank you!

Unfortunately, the sat phone is not an option for me. I believe it's very expensive. Also not sure if I can get roaming data this way, specifically $25 per 100MB package.
I want to use iPhone 4S (factory unlocked GSM version, bought from Apple store). The frequencies should not be a problem, since it supports all GSM frequencies.
My main concern - even if Verizon gives me a micro SIM and associates it with my account, will it work in non-Verizon iPhone 4S while in Europe? A representative told me Verizon possibly ties the SIM to a particular phone (normally Verizon world phone). If such a SIM is used in another phone, the registration may fail due to that restriction. The rep was not sure though, that's why posting it here.

  • Non-Verizon e-mail account

Does anyone know if I can keep my non-Verizon e-mail accounts when I get a FIOS connection?  The reason I ask is I previously had a Verizon DSL account and I could not use my e-mail account with a seperate ISP.  Is this scenario possible with a FIOS Internet account?

On residential accounts Verizon blocks port 25 on all but their SMTP server, on the Verizon network. You would need to route your mail through outgoing.verizon.net. It is the only way to send residential outbound mail, unless you use a webmail account. I have been using Outlook Connector with MAPI connecting to my msn account, but suspect it would work with other web based email accounts.
I have seen this stated many times, but I have had no trouble sending emails using an sbcgobal server for the last two years while using my FiOS connection. I have AT&T DSL service at a lake house and I have that account defined in my Outlook Express with the SMTP server specified as smtp.sbcglobal.yahoo.com, using Port 25. I don't use that account for sending very often when I am on FiOS, but I just did another test and and the email went just fine (I sent it to one of my Verizon email accounts and received it just fine, and looking at the source of the email it clearly shows it came from the AT&T server). I also do the reverse, send from my FiOS email account using OE while connected via AT&T (I did have trouble in the beginning because they were blocking Port 25, but a short phone call to their tech support fixed that problem).
I don't know whether Verizon only blocks port 25 in certain areas of the country, or perhaps have removed the block completely, but it most certainly works ok for me.

  • How can I use Messages app on non-Verizon phone?

Hi. I have two phones: A VZW personal phone and a T-Mobile phone from my employer. I wish to carry only one device when I'm at work (my T-Mobile work phone) but I wish to be able to get texts from my personal VZW number on that phone. I know I can't forward texts, so I installed the Verizon Messages Android app on my work phone, but I can't set it up with my VZW number (I figured it should work because I was able set it up on my tablet at home and it works fine there).
After I install the app on the non-Verizon phone, I open it and I get a screen asking me if I want to use the app for my default messaging app. If I click no, the app closes without giving me a chance to set it up with my personal account like it did when I installed it on my tablet.
I also noticed after I installed it, it's called Messages+ instead of Messages. Are they the same thing?

Hi, has this been resolved? I am in a very similar situation and need the app to work on my new Sprint LG G3 exactly the way it operated on my Sprint iPhone 5S. Here is how it worked on my Sprint iPhone: downloaded the VZ Messages app, followed the prompts to tie it into my work Verizon Galaxy S5 number, and started to receive texts sent to my S5 on my iPhone but in the separate VZ Messages app and not in the native iPhone messages app.
But when I install the VZ Messages app on my Sprint LG G3, it only asks if I want to "Change default message app? Use Message+ instead of Messaging as your default message application?" That is not what I want so I tap "Cancel" and the app closes. I am not prompted with the opportunity to tie it to my Verizon S5 number like I was on the iPhone. The ability to have the VZ Messages app on my Sprint LG G3 along side the native G3 messaging app, the exact same way it worked on my Sprint iPhone, is very important and the whole reason I switched from AT&T to Verizon for my work phone.

  • Using Eudora or Netscape7 for non-verizon email accounts with FIOS for access

Since Verizon does not give tech support to 3rd party email clients, and using a non-Verizon email account creates additional problems, I decided to share what I learned the very hard way....certainly with no help whatever from Verizon tech support.
First of all, there may have been a time (a day, a month, some random nanosecond) when you had to change the port to 587 it is no longer the case.  Port 25 works just fine, and in fact 587 no longer works in most cases.  So ignore tech support's claim that all you have to do is change the port number to 587...don't do it.
And so long as you want to use a pop account other than verizon for your incoming email you will have to use what is referred to as SMTP Relay.  Verizon tech support will tell you that Verizon no longer supports SMTP Relay, and technically speaking that is true, but Verizon SMTP Relay is not what you need anyway.  What you need is to use the SMTP Relay facility of your Email Client, in my case Eudora and (for my wife) Netscape 7.
Now before you can actually do anything you will have to have a valid Verizon email account, even if you never plan to actually use your verizon email address.  That means before you can set up your email client you must have a verizon email address. The tech who installed my FIOS supposedly set up my computer, which meant I had internet access, but he didn't set up the verizon email address.  I wasted 2 days before this came to light...so just make sure you have one before starting.
Netscape 7.0  has an email client my wife has used forever so I had to make it work for Verizon FIOS.  Fortunatly they have a built in SMTP Relay facility (although they never call it that).  You set up your pop (incoming) server the way you always have.  In my our email accounts are on Earthlink, so you use the earthlink POP server for your incoming email.  If you are switching from whatever you have to Verizon FIOS, you will already have that set up anyway.  But you will have to change the SMTP server address to outgoing.verizon.net    and you will have to click the box that says Use Authentication, with  User Name and Password.  You will put into the User Name your verizon email account except without the .verizon.net    And the first time you use this Client to send email it will ask your for your password (use your Verizon password) and you should check the box that says to remember this password.    This will make everything work fine.  You will see on the SMTP Server information page a box that allows you to fill in the port.  If you leave it blank it will use port 25.  If you put in another port number it has to be right, and what is the correct number keeps changing based on which verizon person you talk to.  I found that 25 works, although they say it won't, and that others don't work, although they say they will.
To Use Eudora (as i do)  first you have to be using the latest version 7.1 because it appears to be the first one that truely supports SMTP Relay. That's a free download if you don't have it.   Then you have to use multiple personalities.  Effectively you set up one personality (go to to tools and click on personalities) which is your normal email account (ie not your verizon one).  This is used for everything with the exception of the SMTP Server interaction.  YOu then set up a second personality which is for your Verizon email account. Be aware that you can still have that account use your normal email return address so folks who receive email from you can reply to your normal email address.  You can, independantly from that set up your incoming email pop account to be either your normal one or your verizon incoming email account (I do it the later way so I can receive something actually sent to my Verizon account, although I never give that out.  But now the important thing is that you set up your SMTP server to be outgoing.verizon.net  set up User Name to be your verizon email account but without the verizon.net and click on Authentication Allowed and Use Relay Personality.  Don't click on Use submission port 587, like I said you want to use 25, but if verizon has changed that yet again no problem as you can set up the port to use independantly using the Tools/Options/Ports , and finally you go to the Tools/Options/SendingMail stuff and select the SMTP Relay Personality to be the one that is set up for the Verizon email account.  That means your client will operate using your primary personality for everything except the SMTP part and for that it will get all its parameters from the Relay Personality.
    This all worked.

I use Eudora a my email client and routinely receive both my Verizon and ATT emails.
The last email I received  from my Verizon account was at 10:30pm on August 5.  I cannot send emails from Eudora at all either.
My Verizon DSL email account is active through Verizon-Florida at my home there.  I am currently at my Ohio home and the DSL account is with Frontier which purchased Verizon here in Ohio.
Does anyone know what might have happened to have resulted in my emails not being sent to or from my Eudora Client?

No - your iPhone is a GSM phone and Verizon uses a CDMA network. Completely incompatible device and technology.

Data transfer is not supported via bluetooth and iphone to iphone is not supported at all.
