Is it possible to browse the Time Capsule drive without using Bonjour?

I have not found any real specs for the TC that it can use samba. I don't want to have to depend on bonjour to use the NAS functionality of time capsule. Is it possible in Windows explorer to just type:
\\192.168.x.y\
and get a list of the drives in TC? I'd ultimately like to be able to access music and video using other devices (such as XBMC). I can already access a NAS using samba... but the TC instructions are so dumbed down that I can't tell if you can even access the beast without special software. I'm hoping it is possible. If someone has TC and a PC or even boot camp, can they check this and post back?
Thanks!

Bonjour is only necessary if you wish to use the print server functions of the Time Capsule.
I have XP and Vista systems connecting to it through a normal mapped drive configuration without Bonjour and it works fine.
Just stick with the IP address as the name of the device (ie. \\192.168.x.y) unless you have a WINS server and configure the TC with the WINS server address.

Can you wirelss transfer video and music to your iPhone or iPad without using the computer?

You can use Time Capsule as a 'simple' external harddisk, but keep in mind that the fastest connection with the TC is Ethernet which is slower than FireWire800 for example.
Currently iTunes and a USB-connection is needed for syncing an iPad or iPhone.
With the "PC Free" feature of the yet to be released iOS 5 (this fall...) this might not be needed anymore.

  • Can the time capsule works without WLAN cable connected to my DSL router?

Cna the Time capsule work without WLAN cable connection to DSL router?

WLAN is usually used for wireless LAN .. plainly you mean WAN port ..
How do you expect to get internet if the TC is not connected to the internet?
The TC can work stand alone.. true enough but that will then involve considerable issues in setting up two different IP addressing regimes .. you can just bridge the TC and use it as WAP and switch plus hdd without having to route.

  • Can I access time capsule file without using imac

can I access time capsule file without using imac

From a time machine backup? No. If you mean just a regular file stored on there? Not directly. There are a couple of apps out there where you can indirectly get to a file but it's a pain. If you have need of accessing a file both from the mac and the iPad then I suggest DropBox. You get 2GB free and it's a good way to share information between machines and devices.

  • Will I loose existing data on the Time Capsule if I use it now for Time Machine also?

Till now I only save photos, music and movies on my AirPort Time Capsule 2 TB. From now on I also want to use it for Time Machine Backups also. But I am not sure if it my data and the backup will exist in parallel.

You can drag and drop files to the Time Capsule using the Finder.
Open Macintosh HD or the Finder and look for the Time Capsule icon under the SHARED heading on the left side of window.
Click on the Time Capsule icon and a folder representing the drive will appear in the window to the right.
Double click the folder to mount the drive on the desktop.

  • Sharing time capsule over internet using bonjour

I recently purchased a time capsule and set it up to wirelessly connect to my home network. After some reading I've found out that I can access the time capsule when away from home. I've read that there is normally a spot to check "share disks over WAN" but I have "share disks over the internet using bonjour". Now I have tried to share the disk using bonjour and I can't figure out how to access it after this step is completed. Can anyone help??
    Thanks

Hello mbeal08. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
(Note: The following procedure will only work if the Time Capsule (TC) is the router directly connected to Internet modem. It will NOT work if the TC is a downstream router behind another router.)
To share out the TC's internal drive to the Internet:
    Configuring the TC
AirPort Utility > Select the TC
o Note the value of the IP Address. This is the Public or WAN-side IP address of the TC. (Note: You will need to have either a static Public IP address, or use a free dynamic DNS service in order to access the TC from the Internet. This is something Back to my Mac (BTMM) would have make simple for you.)
Manual Setup > Internet > Internet Connection
o Connection Sharing = Share a public IP address
Manual Setup > Disks > Files Sharing tab
    o Enable file sharing (checked)
o Secure Shared Disks = With base station password
o AirPort Disks Guest Access = Not allowed
o Share disks over Ethernet WAN port (checked)
Manual Setup > AirPort > Base Station
o Enter a Base Station Password and verify it in the Verify Password box.
Manual Setup > Advanced > Port Mapping
o Click the plus sign "+" to add a new port mapping.
o In the Public UDP Port(s) and Public TCP Port(s) boxes, type in a 4-digit port number (e.g., 5688) that you choose.
o In the Private IP Address box, type the internal IP address of your TC that you noted earlier.
o In the Private UDP Port(s) and Private TCP Port(s) boxes, type 548, and then, click Continue.
o In the Description box, type a descriptive name like "Time Capsule File Sharing," and then, click Done.
o When you have made all the changes, click Update.
Connect the MacBook Pro to the TC from a remote location
o In the Finder, click Go > Connect to Server.
o Type in the correct domain name or external IP address for your network, plus a colon and the port number you specified when configuring the TC earlier. For example,"www.myTC.com:5688" or "145.200.112.108:5688".
    o Click Connect.
o You will be prompted for your user name and password. The user name can be anything you like; the password would be the TC's Base Station password you defined earlier.
    o Click Connect.
You should now be connected to the TC's internal drive from your MBP. (Note: The TC will appear in the Shared section of your Finder's sidebar as a server with TC's Base Station Name as the server name.)

  • Is it possible to setup the time capsule as an external hard drive (wireless)

Hi, I have purchased a time capsule and looking to use it to automatically backup my data but also would like to see it on my mac book pro as an external hard drive (wireless); is that possible????????????? if yes how???

OK.. the TC is really designed for wired connection.
There is a hidden option.. hold the option key, when you select wireless mode, to join a wireless network. This is hidden because it is poor.. you join the TC to the mifi myfy and then yes, you can access it over wireless network.. but it is now half the speed of direct access due to double hop wireless. The TC is also going to not allow access directly by wireless or ethernet. So the option is there .. it is hidden due to being bad.
You will particularly notice what happens now is during backups your internet will crawl.. because you are saturating the local connection.
If I was in your situation.. I would buy thunderbolt to ethernet adapter and plug directly into the TC.. or scrap the TC and plug directly into a hard disk. The TC now gains you nothing.. it is unsuited to this sort of network.
But another solution is to buy USB wireless stick.. these are tiny things.. and cheap and plenty are Mac OS compatible. Plug it in and use it as a secondary wireless client.. with fixed IP you can now connect directly to the TC .. single hop wireless.. much faster and no interference on the myfi link.
You also don't have another wire plugged into your laptop which is messy.
    OR
Scrap the myfy for a proper 3G router with ethernet.. you can usually just swap the sim over.. this is a much better solution as you put the TC back to its native correct operating mode..
Well there are some possible solutions.

  • Can't access the Time Capsule Drive and attached USB drive

I bought the 3 TB Time capsule a couple of months ago.  I am using it as my wireless router for a cable modem and have attached a USB drive (seagate) to the TC.  I use the TC drive for time machine only.  It worked well at first, for about the first month.   Now I have trouble accessing the TC drive as well as the USB drive.  The router function works perfectly fine.  The drives show up in the Finder under Shared but  cannot connect.  Time machine does not back up because it says the back up drive is not available.  In disc utility, the base station shows with the correct name, but I can't access it. It asks for a pasword but does not respond, so I cannot reboot it from my computer.
If I restart the TC (power off and on), it works fine, I can access both drives.  However, this problem recurs, sometimes within a few days.  I have also noticed, which may be related, that when I enter time machine (when everything is working fine), some of the back-ups are blank.  There is a date and time but no actual back-up.  Not sure if this is related.
I'm runing Mavericks 10.9.2 on an older MacBook, 15" late 2008 with 2.4 ghz dual core.

    Hi Bob,
I updated Mavericks but still had the same problem, so I did a hard reset on TC, although I held the button for over 5 seconds and the amber light was flashing rapidly, it acted like a soft reset.  Still no change so I rebooted my laptop.   Still had an excellent internet connection but in AirPort utility, the TC is grayed out and says device not found.  Light on TC was amber.  So, I tried a hard reset again, but the light wouldn't flash at all.  Unplugged it and after pluggin back in, acted like a hard reset.  I restored previous settings and it is fine for the moment.  Will keep you posted if it recurs.  Hopefully it will not with updated Mavericks, but I get the feeling the problem may be the TC.

  • Does the Time Capsule work without LAN

Ok so I'm looking at buying a Time Capsule, not sure which generation but it has 1Tb of storage, becuase the macbook air only has like 60GB SSD, and i'm wondering whether it all just works over WiFi, and i don't mean does it back up over WiFi I mean does it need to be connected to a router with a LAN just to enable it's WiFi backup?
    Thanks for any answers!

You can backup using Wi-Fi only, but it is a good idea to use an Ethernet connection for your first backup....since everythng on your Mac will be copied over.
It will probaby go 4-5 times faster using an Ethernet connection.
Once the first backup is done, you can switch to wireless since Time Machine will only be backing up the changes to your Mac since the last backup. These "incremental" backups should only take a few moments on each backup.

  • Any way to run diagnostic (like Disk Utility) on the Time Capsule Drive?

I have a Time Capsule with an internal drive that "needs repair", and yet I have no way of repairing it. I have a call in with AppleCare and am still awaiting their call back (2 days) as to what can be done about the drive short of erasing it, and my entire music library with it.
7.3.1 introduced the archive feature in the disk tab and I am currently trying to do that to an external USB drive in hopes of at least saving my music library.
But I have to think it's strange and not reassuring at best, that there is no way to check/validate the integrity of the drive. Especially since a lot of people will be using Time Capsule for more than storage of the BU's.
Ironically enough, the archive feature strangely feels like I am backing up the backup… meaning why did I buy the 1TB Time Capsule if I still have to buy a drive to attach to it?

I suggest you archive the TC drive, or alternatively copy the sparsebundle to a USB drive connected directly to your computer. Then use the erase function on the Airport Utility to re-initialize the TC drive. As long as there is not a hardware problem with the drive, initializing the drive should repair it better than any disk repair utility.
Then copy the sparsebundle back to the TC and Bob's your uncle.
I should warn you that my experience is that if you are copying anything large between a USB drive and TC, the USB drive should be attached to your Mac, not to the TC. I suspect if it is attached to the TC, the data flows from the TC to your Mac and then back to the USB drive attached to the TC, in effect going through your ethernet connection twice (don't even think about wireless!).
I also suspect the archive tab in the TC is a means to transfer files directly from the TC to a connected USB drive without going through the attached compter, so it may be quite fast. However, when you tranfer back, do it with the USB drive attached to the computer.

  • Can I auto mount the Time Capsule drive?

I am starting to use the TC drive for more than just backups (2T is way more than we need). Is there a way to have the Mac's automatically mount the drive onto the desktop at bootup?

+Is there a way to have the Mac's automatically mount the drive onto the desktop at bootup?+
    Try the following:
    Open System Preferences
    Open Accounts
Click the Login Items tab next to the Password tab
Click the + (plus) button at the bottom of the Login Items box
Using the Finder like interface, click on your Time Capsule icon under the SHARED heading
Click the folder that appears to the right
Click Add at the lower right of the window

If you are opening a computer to replace an internal hard disk.. buy a new one. Seriously hard disks do not cost that much... especially if the computer is a Mac.. the cost and effort to open the computer demands that you use the best drive you can find.. and that is NOT a TC drive.
For instance if you are wanting a new drive in a Mac Mini.. it is 2.5" not 3.5" anyway.. but you can buy 500GB or 750GB hybrid drives.. for a few dollars more.. and they are much better than slow green drives Apple use in the TC.
Even for a desktop computer.. use SSD and a hybrid drive.. never bother with the cost of the drive .. it is small part of what it will cost you if not in money at least in time.
For a low end PC that is for "Test" use ok.. but second hand drives will still be the worst possible.. and Apple used the cheapest and slowest drives around.. ie using sata1 when WD was selling sata2 green drives for years.

    Hi SamGoe,
According to your description, my understanding is that you want to update the PoerPoint slide from SharePoint 2010 slide library automatically.
It seems to be not necessary to use Macros. SharePoint provides an OOB way to notify you to check for update to the slide library slides when you open the presentation. PowerPoint does this because you selected the option
Tell me when this slide changes when you copied the slides from the library.
More information, please refer to the link below:

    I hope this helps.

  • Is it possible to connect an external drive to the time capsule that I could use to store and access my primary iTunes files?

I would like to move my music files to an external drive that my iMac iTunes could access wirelessly and I'm wondering if it is possible to do so through connecting a drive to my Time Capsule.

This can be done....but if you move your iTunes Media folder to the drive that is connected to the Time Capsule, you might first want to think about how you will backup these important files.
Time Machine cannot backup the files back to the Time Capsule, so you will need to use a commercial backup application like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to copy the files back to the Time Capsule drive.
As long as you plan to add a hard drive, you might want to consider an alternate plan:
Connect a hard drive directly to your Mac using USB or FireWire and move the iTunes Media Library there. Then, Time Machine will back up both your Mac and the hard drive, so you have original copies on one drive and backups on another.
Whatever you decide, be sure to follow the correct instructions to move the iTunes Media Folder. You cannot simply drag and drop.
