Is it possible to burn a backup of the install disks with a macbook?

I actually know how to do it but there is not enough room on a blank 4.7GB DVD to burn apple install disk 1. So I checked if larger DVD disks are sold. I see that 8.5Gb size are sold but those are dual layer which, I may be wrong on this one, the macbooks superdrive can't burn. Am I correct? If so, what are my options - buy an external drive or something else?

Backup orig FCStudio install disks before sending for crossgrade

I am currently running FCP5.0 and decided to do the crossgrade with Apple (mainly because I just purchased Shake 4.1 and found out from a posting on the list AFTER I purchased it that Shake 4.1 won't run with 5.0.4)
Taking the suggestion of other posters to backup the original DVD's before sending them in, I did so. Two of the install disks (Motion and DVDSP) were approx 7 GB each. Since my G5DP2.5 only burns DVD +/-R, I purchased a LaCie DVD+/-R Dual Layer burner and burned those disks to DVD-R Dual Layer Verbatim Disks.
They show up on my machine if they are in the LaCie DL burner. They are spit out if put directly in my G5DP2.5 machine.
I have 3 newer Mac machines that the system profiler says burns DVD+R DL . So I burn them as DVD+R Dual Layer and those show up fine in those 3 newer machines, but not in my G5DP2.5 None of the machines will accept the DVD-R DL disks.
My questions:
1. Why do the original install DVD's work in my G5DP2.5 as I assume they are some sort of Dual Layer DVD because those two disks are approx 7 GB each?
2. Does everyone else have Dual Layer +/- R capability in their machines and have no trouble copying their disks as backup?
3. Ever the optimist, if for some reason I want to go back to 5.0 (5.0.4 is where it should be, I know) and do a clean install on the G5DP2.5, I'm guessing it will work to just attach the LaCie Dual Layer burner so my machine can read the disks?
Any thoughts?

DVD SP 4, Apple Loops for Soundtrack Pro, LiveType Media 1, and Motion.

Umm, none of my cross-grade disks are dual-layer DVDs but that certainly does NOT mean that yours are not. That they are shipping this way is news to me. Learn something new every day around here if you're paying attention
Get Info will reveal the capacity of optical media, not necessarily the actual contents. You just need to be careful what figure you're looking at. And, the contents of installer DVDs are highly compressed archives. A 6G installer file might unstuff to much more than 10G.
Not all disk images can be used to run a complete installation, some require the physical disk for obvious copy protection that still includes serial numbers. I have no idea if Apple's are set up this way. The only way to find out is to create the images on your drive and try it.

How to save SOME time machine Mac backups from the TM disk to other disk WITHOUT formatting the destination disk?
I have a Time Machine disk (A) including the backups of several different Macs (B, C, D & E) generated with an old Mac OS X 10.5.8 (iMac PowerPC) over the years.
I have transferred the old Mac contents to a new Mac with OS X 10.8.3 using Migration Assitant. All OK.
Now, I want to erase such TM disk A to use if for other purposes, but first, I would like to RECOVER the backups of some Macs inside it (D and E). Is that possible WITHOUT formatting the destination disk and selecting only some Macs from the TM disk and not the fulll TM disk? How?

Thanks for the reply. I do not think that is messy, anway. I simply used the same external disk as Time Machine disk for different Macs. And that worked OK all the time for years.
The ExternalTimeMachineDisk contains the folder Backups.backupdb
which contains the following folders (each one corresponding to the Time Machine backup made from each Mac):
Mac1
Mac2
MacBook1
MacBook2
In relation to my message above, is it possible to select specific files, folders or full Mac backups from such Time Machine disk and save them to other disk? How?

Time Machine treats any new drive like a new computer. It starts a completely new Time Machine backup. So you now have two backups - a new one and all your old ones.

When trying to burn photos from IPhoto to both my Windows 7 Pro and Macbook but I just get "no devices available for burning" although I can see my shared drives. Any ideas or is it not possible to burn with Remote Disk?

Thanks shldr2thewheel, Did read carefully and can access the remote disc on my windows PC to install programs or view files on MacBook Air BUT can't access the windows optical drive to Burn IPhoto file and I've even searched the support doc for "burn' and it doesn't appear even once. So I still wonder if it is possible to do what I'm trying. Also noted a number of other people with same/similar question on the forum under "More Like This" but can't find any definite yes or no. Is it possible to delete old backups within the Sparsebundle?

After a MacBook disaster and an upgraded hard drive I have a TC backup three times larger than the data! ie each time Ive connected the same computer with new operating systems on Time MAchine has backed up the same data in the same Saparsebundle so it is now 800Gb or so.
I have tried to delete the whole sparsebundle but all I get is "cannot delete, 'bands' is in use" then it crashes Finder. I dont want to strip the whole TC as there are other machines' backups I don't want to loose.
Any help???? please

Backup of Leopard Install DVD with disk utility

I'm in the process of saving a disk image from the Leopard Install DVD, but I'd like to be sure I did it right by selecting the Leopard Install partition on the sidebar in Disk Utility, rather than the drive itself. I did so because when I tried it with the drive itself it offered a default name as the name of my dvd drive "Matshita" rather than anything specific to the disk.
I'd also like to be sure the windows drivers are there, so before I waste an hour burning and tossing the result, the question is do I select the drive or the partition to image?

Run the disk utility and select the disk and then select New Image. You will create and image on your desktop.
I used cdr rather than dmg.
I also used Toast8 to burn the image to a DVD
Be sure you are using a dual-layer DVD and your burner supports it.
I successfully burned a backup this way, and yes, it does contain the Windows drivers as well as Leopard.

HT1414 How do you restore an old backup? The new one with the stuff I didn't need was backed up and overwrote my old one.

Pages wasn't working so someone told me to delete it and redownload it. Of course, our school told us not to use Cloud since there wasn't much space and now I lost most of my notes. You may not have any previous backups if iTunes overwrote the only backup that you have.
Launch iTunes on your computer (do not connect the iPad yet) and go to Edit>Preferences>Devices. Check the box at the bottom that says - Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads from syncing automatically. You can also see if you have multiple backups for the iPad in that window. If you do - Click OK and quit iTunes. If you don't have another backup, just turn on auto sync again. There is nothing that that you can do if you don't have another backup.
Assuming that you did have another backup - connect the iPad to your computer and launch iTunes. Right click on the iPad name under devices and select - Restore from Backup. If you have multiple backups, you can select the one that you want from the drop down menu in the pop up window.

Dave, I'm trying to duplicate in a script running inside AE. I guess I could try to do a system command to duplicate, but I'd really like to do it inside AE so I can keep track of the new layer.
