  • Is it possible to buy "cheap" DAQ equipment for personal use?

    Hi guys!
I'm a huge fan of LabVIEW and I use it every day at work These days I've bought a house for me and my girlfriend. As we're currently renovation the house I got this crazy idea; why not make my own "smarthouse"??. I have LabVIEW at work so I could easily develop a small program for controling dimming of light, music on/off, and maybe some other cool stuff. (I'm already trying to build  a LEGO robot to get beer from my fridge )
But I can't do much without a DAQ device. I have looked into K12Labs and I found it quite facinating! After some research I found that myDAQ is only for students and educators in USA/Canada. Well, I live in Norway and I'm not longer a student either
    So I wonder:
    - Is it possible to buy Used/Demo versions of DAQ devices?
    - Are there any DAQ devices which are similar to the myDAQ?
    - What would you recommend for personal/hobby use?
The DAQ will only be used for controlling Relays and other small electrric cicuits, and maybe som small measurements. No need for high samplings rate and real-time measurement! My budget is quite low. Maybe around 2000 NOK, which is around 300 Dollar.
Thanks for any input in advance!

I have some ideas. First I have 4 daq516 card (PCMCIA) I do not use any more. I could send you one. free if you want. They require nidaq 6.90. But I have run them on up to Labview 8.6 using XP. I think you have to use XP on this daq driver. I do not have the cabling or the connector block any more. So you must purchase these items if you still can in order to use the cards.
The second solution is to purchase a cheap micro-controller development system. Then use C to program the micro-controller and serial communication. This may work well for non high speeds apps. I use that approach my self. A modern micro-controller have a lot of 10 bits AD inputs. This will set you back about 500 Kr, plus a USB to serial converter if you do not have such device
Besides which, my opinion is that Express VIs Carthage must be destroyed deleted
(Sorry no Labview "brag list" so far)

  • Buying external hard drive for iMac

I need some extra hard drive capacity to tide me over until I buy a new computer. The Internet has a tremendous selection, but I'm afraid to place my order until I can be sure that what I purchase will work with my iMac, and I can't get any company to answer my request for buying information, even though I state that a purchase will be made as soon as I receive a reply.
I have USB and Firewire. Some people say not to worry because any and all external hard drives will work with my computer. Other people say to be careful because only certain ones are compatible with my computer. Some say that any external computer will work, but to get a guarantee that it will work "just in case". What is the truth? I have downloaded information on selecting a hard drive. It has information on rpm, capacity, price, etc, but I see nothing about Macs versus PCs, which is really what my question is. Put another way, what do I need to know when the issue is compatibility?
iMac DV (Special Edition) Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hello,
Most drives are going to work with either a PC or a Mac. There is very little difference in the requirements for newer drives. Basically, the computers are designed to work with drives that meet certain standards. And, as long as the drive is built to those standards, then any computer should work with it (provided it has the right port to plug it into).
So, basically, you can buy the drive you want, and it should work with either computer.
The main exception is going to be drives with specific features that require software drivers. For example, if the drive has a button that you press to activate an automated backup of another drive, then that feature is going to require software to make it work. So, your ability to use that feature is going to specifically depend on whether there is a version of that software for the machine you want to use it with.
As for specific models. I can recommend two models:
My favorite so far, is the Other World Computing "Neptune".
I have a "Neptune 120 GB" FireWire drive from OWC (Other World Computing)
    They are at:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/owc-neptune-drives/
They are great, low-cost drives and work very well.
I got it with a 7200 R.P.M. Hitachi / IBM DeskStar drive. It is 120 GB in size.
The enclosure provides two FireWire 400 ports, and also provides it's own on/off switch.
The performance is great. It outperforms the internal drive installed in my Mac Mini. I haven't had a single complaint about the drive. So, that's pretty good
The drive does come with it's own power supply. So, you can use it with any computer (most computers don't provide enough power to run hard drives solely from the FireWire ports).
    Mine is quiet.
    It uses a fan-less design.
The inside chassis is made of steel, and is able to help dissipate heat from the hard drive.
It sometimes gets warm. But, I've never felt it being hot. Just slightly warmer than room temperature.
I had it running for over an hour yesterday (backing-up my main hard drive to it), and after a full hour of running constantly and writing files, it was just slightly warm.
I'd say it's a very good design, and dissipates the heat from the 7200 R.P.M. drive quite well.
Otherwise, I can hear the drive spinning if I specifically listen for it. But, don't ever hear it unless I am trying.
I have used the drive with Windows XP Home, and then later with my Mac. It's been used with both OS 10.3.x through 10.4.6.
It has been used with 2 different iMac G5 systems, a Compaq PC, a Hewlett Packard PC, a Mac Mini G4, and an iBook G4.
So, compatibility should be fine with just about anything.
If you want a drive with more options (multiple connection interfaces, etc.), then I would be comfortable recommending any of the models OWC sells. They know their stuff, and you can be certain that their products will work with a Mac. If you're looking for guarantee's, you'll find them on their sales pages for everyone to see.
For example, scroll down to the bottom of the sales page for the 80 GB drive here:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/NPFW7080GB/
And, you'll see that they clearly list both Windows and Macintosh computers as being compatible. You'll find similar statements on the pages for every product they sell. They point out specifically what each device works with or needs on their sales pages.
And they are great on the phone. So, if you have any questions, just call them. They are very helpful.
The other model I have used is not as nice, but I can say it is built very, very solid.
That one is a Maxtor Personal Storage 3100 External USB 2.0 hard drive.
    http://www.maxtor.com/portal/site/Maxtor/menuitem.5d2b41d3cef51dfe29dd10a1913460 68/?channelpath=%2Fen_us%2FSupport%2FProductSupport%2FExternal+Storage%2FPersonal+Storage+Family%2FPersonal+Storage3100
It has a 7200 R.P.M. Maxtor hard drive with a 2 MB cache in it. Mine is 80 GB (but it is available in larger capacities).
It is a good performer. But, it is slower than the FireWire Neptune that I mentioned above.
The durability of this particular unit is amazing though.
I purchased it used, and when I got it out of the box, my hands slipped and it fell about 6 feet onto a hard vinyl floor. No padding at all, a good solid and firm drop.
At that point, I knew that I had probably just wasted my money. I knew that if I plugged it in and it didn't work, that I would never know if it was defective when he sold it to me or if I damaged it.
But, I plugged-it in, and ran a full diagnostics on it. And, to my pleasure it worked great.
It didn't even suffer a single mark.
And, it is still working reliably today (on my wife's iBook G4).
I would personally recommend the FireWire "Neptune" from OWC the highest. But, I am impressed with the survival of the Maxtor. But, the Maxtor drive is noticeably slower due to the USB interface.
    I hope this helps.

  • Buying right memory modules for my mac-mini (mid 2011)

Could someone please confirm if I could use one of the following DIMMs for my mid 2011 mac-mini? (I'll be using 2x4GB DIMMs)
I tend to go for the transcend one, being cheaper & I see good number of folks using it without issue on their macbook pros's (source: reviews from flipkart)
    Please help me decide.
    Rs. 1068 Transcend DDR3 4 GB Laptop RAM (JM1333KSN-4G)
Rs. 1223 Kingston ValueRAM DDR3 4 GB Laptop RAM (KVR1333D3S9/4G)
    Rs. 1277 Corsair DDR3 4 GB Laptop RAM (CMSO4GX3M1A1333C9)
Supported DIMM specifications by Apple: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4805

    @aasheash
    I had bought 2 x
    Transcend DDR3 4 GB Laptop RAM (JM1333KSN-4G)
My machine started having kernel panics and I had to re install the OS
This happend 3 times and it took me a while to figure it was the RAM upgrade
I dont think these Transcends are Mac compatible
Can anyone please elaborate on the RAM timings or any other compatibility criteria. I figured I better understand this one, coz unfortunately I came across posts saying that this Transcend is compatible, but actually its not
Machine works fine after putting back the old RAMs
    I have a macbook pro 15" late 2011

  • Buy Leopard vs Tiger for IMAC G 5 or simple give in and buy new IMac??

After reviewing this topic, I am still confused as to what to do. The Leopard OS looks complicated to load and I am not at all savy about Mac's and trouble shooting problems!! Is the Tiger a better way to go for a simple Mac user like me? I am even thinking about a new IMac with updated software and Leopard. My IMac works great but the Panther OS and ILife are probably getting outdated (but still meets all my needs still, though Turbo Tax will now not run on it.). Any suggestions or advice? Dazed and confused!

    Hi Stephen,
I agree with MGW that you seem to be looking for confirmation or approval that it would be a good idea to buy a new Mac. I have a feeling that if you install Leopard into your old Mac, it may run slower that on a stronger Mac which would have more RAM and power. Leopard would also take up more space from your current 80 HD. Furthermore, by purchasing a new iMac, you will be able to benefit from a SuperDrive instead of a ComboDrive, a bigger HD, and more RAM can't hurt.
Anyway, I'm cheering for you! Good luck with your decision! I never regretted my move from an old Quick Silver G4 tower (CD-R) to my current MacPro. It took me many years to get the courage and the money to finally go for it and NO REGRETS!
    Best wishes...
    Rio.

  • Should I buy now or wait for iMac upgrade?

After the recent iMac price reduction, should I buy now or wait until the end of the year for a potential upgrade? Does anybody think there will be much of an upgrade? Retina Display?
I am looking at getting an upgraded 27" with i7, 16GB and 3TB Fusion.
Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

General advice is if you don't need to buy then don't buy.  There is always something newer coming out in the next 12 months.  That said, also consider what you have now.  Sometimes newer models cut off older software or hardware and buying a new model may mean you have to buy all new software or some mission critical piece of hardware.  In a science lab where I worked they had old equipment for which there were no software upgrades for that model.  Buying too new a computer would have meant spending half a million dollars on related hardware upgrades dictated by the backward compatible software limitations of that $1500 computer.  They held off buying a new computer until they could afford new machinery.

  • Can I buy a replacement battery for my 13 inch Macbook Pro from Apple?

The battery for my Early 2011 13-inch Macbook Pro is now completely dead, no longer even recognized by my computer.  Anyone know if I take it into the apple store if they can replace it for me?  I didn't see a battery in the Apple Store that would work, but would they have one there?

Why don't you call them up & ask??????

*Hi Donald, Welcome (Back)* to Apple's Users Help Users Forums.
There was a thread on this issue a few days ago. There is a KB on Apple which lists OS w Build # and what Apple installed on it. The build # is at Blue Apple / About this Mac. IIRC if they installed Tiger and then it was Dealer upgraded to Leopard then you can install Tiger, a system specific Disc. Apple would be the best source—stay away from ebay as there are too many errors. Apple Care is probably your best source of info.
    Good Luck, JP

  • Can I buy a replacement battery for iphone4?

Hi guys, just wondering if it is possible to buy a replacement battery for an iPhone 4? Even the section on the Apple website entitiled battery replacement doesn't answer the question.
    Cheers.

No. You cannot buy a battery from Apple.
You can pay Apple to replace it for you.
Apple offers a battery replacement for $79, plus $6.95 shipping, subject to local tax. Apple disposes of your battery in an environmentally friendly manner.

    Holvi,
You will probably be able to find the iWork'09 DVD at Amazon or similar online vendor. Install from the DVD and immediately run Software Update to get to the latest version.
The Terms of Use here dictate that we test our suggestions before posting, but obviously I'm not going to try this myself, so there's an element of risk, but it seems your only option. It has worked for users in the past, but you never know how OS upgrades can change such things. If you go this route, please post back with your results.
    Good luck,
    Jerry
