Is it possible to capture from DV tape (OnLocation CS5)

I posted this question on the OnLocation forum but got not responses at all. I’m new to Premiere Pro CS5 so please bear with me. Is it possible to capture DV from my Canon HV40 using OnLocation? When I get OL and my camera connected and ready, it only allows me to capture Live recoding. But I would like to capture my already recorded DV from tapes. I know I can use PrePro under a new project each time but it would be nice to do capturing and import clips to whatever projects later. Do I have something set wrong or is this not possible using OL?

Hi Jeff
I realised once I'd said it that, provided a picture's being sent down the firewire, OL will record it.  Doh!

Is it possible to monitor audio through my mac while capturing from a tape in FCPX?

I am sure that as you import a tape you will hear the audio as well as see the video.
    Have you got FCP X?
If not, download the free 30 day trial.

  • Mark a series of In Out Points before capture from DV tape?

When Using Adobe Premier Pro a few years back I seem to remember playing a tape all the way through, marking In/Out points, all the way along the tape, then going back to the beginning click Batch Capture ( or similar) and the machine would rewind the tape and run through again capturing just the relevant clips.
Can I do this in FCE?
I see I can do an individual clip, or the whole tape, but cant seem to find if I can do a batch capture?
If not, is it possible to set FCE to split the capture automatically after each scene , detect where the Record/stop button has been pressed when the film was taken and split there?
Sorry cant tell you what version at the moment, a capture is in progress. But I bought it about one month ago.

Oh, yes, it was, the fatal error was naming a user 'Home'
That combined with doing a restore from a TM backup that did not backup anything in a folder named Home...so no user data backed up. It is in the TM auto exclude list.
When I rebooted, it would not allow me to log in under any name, as no user existed anymore. Eventually loged back in from terminal/Single user mode, can t remember now. Finally got back in but dock icons all gone, replaced by big question marks, had to run everything from terminal window..
What I am getting at is that I had been lead to believe that this OS was so solid, and to quote one of my friends ' you cant do anything wrong...it wont let you' I had wanted to believe this though I did doubt it. I use a varity of systems, FreeBSD/FreeNAs server or three, Ubuntu variants etc.
So despite what it may sound like, I am not knocking it, and am quite prepared for differences, more dissapointed that it has not lived up to the hype I have been fed by all my mates all these years, and feeling foolishg for believing them. It does not seem any quicker/slower or more or less stable than a well setup and maintained Windows install. Apps certainly freeze as often as Windows apps....but that probably can be laid at the door of the third party developers....Admitedly, it probably takes more work to keep a Windows machine running at top performance, far more daily/weekly chores/cleanups etc to do to keep it 'clean'

  • Audio Capture from DV Tape

I've reviewed many posts here about audio capture but, I am unable to figure out what the "trick" is to capturing audio alone with the video using the new iMovie. I'm connected via Firewire and I'm able to view the video in capture mode but, I hear no sound. I've checked iMovie Preferences and System Preferences and everything seems to be OK there.
Is this the way this new version of this program functions? I wish I didn't have to post a msg here because, I'm trying to read the previous post and trying anything that seems to pertain to my issue without the desired results.
Can someone please shed some light on what's going on with this function of this program?

I assume you are wanting to hear the audio as you are importing and not that you have no audio once it is imported.
imovie 08 doesn't play audio while importing. While you are using tape (that imports in real time) imovie now imports from a variety of different types of camera such as AVCHD (which isn't imported at real time. Therefore it is no longer logical to playback audio on import.

  • Unable to capture from DV tape

I was given a Mini DV tape and when I try to capture it starts the first few seconds and stop with the following message:
"Capture encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape. This could be due to a problem with the tape. Capture has been aborted and your clip has been saved."
Any ideas what might be wrong and how I can resolve it?
    Thanks.

    Hi Steve,
There are several causes that can lead to that problem.
Just copy and paste the error message in the search area of the forum on the right hand side of this page and you will get a number of useful hints.

  • Capture from DV Tape

For several years I have been using a Panasonic DV camcorder as a DVCR for capturing to Prem Pro 1.5. Using DV out into a Capture card on a HP Windows 8 computer.
Now I just tried it with PP CC and gives me a message "Can't activate Recorder. Try resetting camera".
After much experimentation, I find if I turn the camera on in Camera mode before opening Capture then when it shows the picture from the camera if I quickly switch it to VCR I can use it in the normal way.
I was wondering if there is a setting buried somewhere that could correct this condition?
Also I tried a borrowed Sony DV VCR and it worked without any special startup.

This is for PPro through CS6, so I do NOT know if things are the same for CC

  • Correct preset for video captured from VHS tape

I have bought a cable which connects to my PC USB slot and has red, white and yellow component connections to connect to my (old) VCR or Video-8 format camera.  It comes with software called ArcSoft ShowBiz that allows me to capture the footage.  I have used it for both VHS tapes and Video-8 tapes.  The only options I have when capturing are the filename and a choice of MPEG1 and MPEG2, with MPEG1 being the default.
I have successfully captured footage (in MPEG1 format) and now I want to edit it in PE10.  The trouble is I do not know what preset to use.  The VHS tapes were in PAL format.  If I open a project as DV PAL and add the footage to the timeline it has a red line above it, which I assume means I will lose resolution when I render.  The quality is already not great and I don't want to make it worse.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

Most likely that footage will not work well or look good in Premiere Elements. The capture device you're using is a low-end digitizer and likely came with some software for editing (ArcSoft Shopbiz). It's designed to work pretty exclusively with that software.
MPEG1 is a very low quality format.
You can try using the project settings for Hard Disk Camcorder/Standard Defintion for that footage -- but I make no guarantees about the quality.
The best device for capturing analog video is a DV bridge, like the Canopus AVDC, as we discuss in this FAQ.

  • Crazy large file sizes on capturing from standard tape....

All, first post here, and only because I'm at my wits end!
I've been using iMovie for sometime with my current camera (Panasonic PV-GS180). Those file sizes were large, but reasonable.
Since then, I've decided to bump up my skills and work with FCE. Great product, but there is one thing that is preventing me from using it.... CRAZY LARGE FILES!!
I had a 42GB file size for 10 or 20 mins of capture time! That's just crazy, isn't it?
I used Easy Setup to choose DV-NTSC 32kHZ (My recorder is using 12-bit audio). My scratch disk is my local disk, which has 43GB avail. The top of the capture window shows "Total Free Time (AV) 208.7 min".
But I only get 10 or 20 minutes before the capture hangs, because my drive is full! Am I doing anything wrong? Will I have to go back to iMovie to import my video?
Thanks for your advice and suggestions!

Sorry guys, I thought I gave enough information. But thanks so much for staying with the discussion! Keep in mind, that I'm just a network engineer, and am a newbie at this FCE thing!
I thought there was only one way to capture, so my apologies for not including all the information. Yes, I'm using the capture now, as that's the only way I knew how. I'll look into the "Log and Capture".
As far as the types of files, I am unsure. It does not have the file extension at the end of the filename. However, in the info dialog box, it has:
    Kind: QuickTime Movie
    Dimensions: 720 x 480
Codecs: DV/DVCPRO - NTSC, Integer (Big Endian), Timecode
    Channel Count: 2
Again, I'll look into the Log and Capture. Maybe it will be more efficient?
    Thanks all!!

  • Issue Capturing from DV Tape, Says Not Enough Space

I'm trying to capture some footage for a client to edit themselves off these DV Tapes
    it stops every 9min 24sec 29frames
my scratch disk is set to my external which has 300GB left on it and no limits are set with it.
I figured I'd just start up capture each time it finished and place the clips together, but they're missing frames.
    What's going on?
The only thing that is set for the scratch disk is:
Minimum Allowable Free Space on Scratch Disks: 2047 MB
Please help ASAP, the client just informed he wishes to pick up the footage tomorrow (originally i was going to edit, and I was going to edit over the weekend)
    Thanks!

Well, what I am asking is if the tape was recorded at 24P (23.98) or if it was recorded at 24P with pull down added so that it is 29.97. You mentioned 480i which would be the latter with the pull down.
I assume this is a Panasonic DVX 100B Camera?
I have heard of cases where the pulldown cadence gets screwed up in long duration clips, which cause FCP to bump out of the capture process.

  • Can I "print to tape" using PAL and Capture from that tape using NTSC?

I need to edit video from a video card in the PAL format somehow onto the FCE Timeline using NTSC.

This is not any where nearly as simple as it sounds. You need to standards convert the PAL material to NTSC. I'd recommend using Graeme Nattress' Standards Converter for this. Then you can edit in NTSC and record to NTSC tape.
Just to add, FCE does not accept standard definition material from a video card. It only handles AVCHD media from a video card. The only HD tape format it supports is HDV.

  • IMovie capture from DV tape without auto scene break

Has anyone figured out to prevent iMovie from automatically inserting scene breaks in iMovie'11.
I am importing previously edited footage for conversion.  This still contains the timestamps.
After importing, iMovie automatically places each clip by time/date order in Events - which means it is jumbled up because it has previously been edited.
Basically what I want is either 1) to import as a single clip, i.e. disable auto scene break, or 2) to be able to sort clips into same time/date order that they were imported.
    Cheers

iMovie will assume that anything imported in DV Stream is coming directly off a camcorder, and therefore will be sorted in chronological order.
If you still have access to the software where you created these movies, you can share them out in something other than DV Stream.
For example, if you have iMovie 06, you can import it without auto scene breaks. Then Export Using QuickTime to an mov container in the DV codec. That will produce an mov file that iMOvie 11 will import in the correct order.

  • Capturing from old Hi8 tapes

    1. What do I need to capture from old Hi8 tapes?
    2. I have a few old Hi8 cameras. Is there any value to these things? Can they be used for anything -- a web cam? Or are they pretty much just a waste of space?
    Thanks

You need some way to capture - DV deck, DV converter, capture card, etc... The Digital Hi8 cameras/decks allowed capture from Hi8 tapes. If you have a capture card/deck, you can play back the Hi8 thru it and capture the analog signal that way...

  • Encoding DV to ProRes 422 while capture from camera

Is It possible to capture a DV tape encoding with ProRess 444?

but if you're trying to integrate DV into a project that is already predominantly made up of ProRes footage, whether it's from DigiBeta or HDCAM, it would decrease render times.
Not by much. I'd opt for the minimal rendering over the file size that would happen with the change in data rate.
Don't we always preach to have all your footage in the same codec whenever possible?
    There are exceptions.

  • Capture from Two Tables and Apply in one Table

    Hi All,
Is it possible to capture from two tables (master and child table) and apply in one table?
    For example,
    1. DEPT and EMP tables in source database with relation
DEPT table structure is like DEPT_ID, DEPT_NAME, LOC_NAME
    EMP table structure is like EMP_ID, EMP_NAME, EMP_DOJ, EMP_SAL, DEPT_ID
    2. EMP_DEPT_STAGING in destination database
    EMP_DEPT_STAGING table structure is like EMP_ID, EMP_NAME, EMP_DOJ, EMP_SAL, DEPT_ID. DEPT_NAME, LOC_NAME
if there is any update in DEPT table, EMP_DEPT_STAGING should get populated with Department and its employee details. Similarly, if there is any update in EMP table EMP_DEPT_STAGING table should get populated with Employee details and along with department detail.
Is it possible to accomplish this? If yes, could you please provide me some examples?
    Thanks & Regards

  • SunVideoPlus: capture from both ports simultaneously

    Hi all,
Is it possible to capture from both ports of a SunVideoPlus capture board simultaneously?
I have successfully created 2 frames, each for a media locator sunvideoplus://0/1 and sunvideoplus://0/2. When starting the capture, a video stream appears in one of the frames. The other displays a snapshot of the same stream. This makes me believe that only one port can be used at any one point.
Alternatively, has anyone worked with switching between ports at some high frequency, e.g. every 1/15 seconds or every second?
    Thanks.

I've got a similar problem in which I would like to process multiple streams from several webcams at once. I'm getting this popup thingy to choose the stream, but I would like java to be able to handle it.
    Any idea?
