Is it possible to completely disable Keychain Access in Tiger?
Does anyone know if it is possible to completely disable keychain access in Tiger? As part of security policies handed down from our corporate office, I need to be able to totally disable the ability to save/store any kind of passwords for servers, email software, other software, etc. Thanks!
Misc. Mac OS X (10.4.3)
This might be away around it.
Additional Notes on Protecting Keychains
For laptops it may be advisable to store all keychains on a portable drive, such as a
USB flash memory key or a portable FireWire drive, if allowed by organizational
policy. The portable USB key can then be removed from the laptop and stored
separately when the keychains are not in use. Anyone attempting to access data on
the machine will need the laptop, the USB device, and the password for the keychain
stored on the USB device, providing an extra layer of protection if the laptop is stolen
or misplaced.
To use this capability, move all keychain files to the USB storage device and
configure the Keychain Access application to use the keychains in the new
location. Remember that the default storage location for keychains is in each user’s
Library/keychains directory, but that the user may have stored keychains
elsewhere as well. To move a keychain to a portable USB drive (or to any new
location):
1. Start the Keychain Access application.
2. If the drawer showing the user’s keychains is not open, click on the Show
Keychains icon to open it.
3. Click to select the keychain that is to be moved.
4. Pull down the Edit menu and select Change password for keychain
“X”..., where X is the keychain being moved.
5. Click on the Details arrow to display more detail about the keychain.
6. Note the Keychain Location and click Cancel.
7. Pull down the File menu and select Delete keychain “X” where X is the
keychain being moved.
8. In the window that appears on the screen, select Delete References. Do not
delete the files; only the references should be deleted here.
9. Open the folder containing the keychain as noted in step 6.
10. Copy this file to the new location, such as a USB keychain drive.
11. Drag the original file to the Trash.
12. Choose Secure Empty Trash from the Finder menu to delete the file.
13. In the Keychain Access application, select Add keychain... from the File
menu and open the keychain file that was moved. The keychain will appear in
the list of keychains in the Keychain Access application.
The system will now access the keychain file in its new location.
While this is for Panther it should be the same for Tiger.

Possible / how to completely disable Keychain??
Hi,
I know Keychain has its fans, though I suspect most of them don't have to use it in a corporate environment, where AD users have to change passwords every month. It drives our users nuts (and me!).
I know they only have to go into Keychain Access and reset it, and I've explained to them how to do that countless times, but they still get tied into knots with it. Far better for them to just re-enter their password for each network connection (only one in our case, so no great hassle).
Don't want any advice on 'how best to use the Keychain', or to be told how wonderful it is. I simply want to banish it from our systems completely, for ever and ever (Amen!). Is this possible (short of screwing up the machine)?
Any help most welcome thanks.
I've already searched around but can find nothing about how to kill the thing. Does anyone else hate Keychain as much as me?Hi, Jack.
By "AD" I presume you mean Active Directory.
AFAIK, you can't:• For starters, some applications, like Mail, Safari, and others are "Keychain-aware" and depend on the the keychain and Keychain Services for saving and retrieving account and password info. It's also involved in saving certificates. Remove keychain and such apps are likely to break.
• Second, it's a core part of the OS, specifically Mac OS X Security Services.I see your options as follows:
1. You may want to see if there's a way to configure AD so it does not use the Keychain. However, this means users will have to enter their passwords every time unless AD provides some other secure method for saving them.
2. You have an educational problem here, not a technical problem. Create a tutorial for them, including screen shots, showing them how to update the password. Define a Test User to use in the illustrations so you don't have to use your own account. Then given everyone a copy and place it on one of your servers so folks can download the tutorial when needed.
Good luck!

Is it possible to completely disable port 23 on a Cisco device?
When we run the 'show control-plane host open-ports' command on any of our routers (but specifically a CGR 2010) we are seeing port 23 in a listening state.
Active internet connections (servers and established)
Prot Local Address Foreign Address Service State
tcp *:22 *:0 SSH-Server LISTEN
tcp *:23 *:0 Telnet LISTEN
udp *:123 *:0 NTP LISTEN
Our auditors are leery of this even though we have shown that we do not have telnet enabled on the VTY lines, only SSH, and there is an ACL in place for further protection. Is there ANY way to completely disable port 23 to keep it from running AT ALL upon startup? I have been scouring the internet for a solution to this and have come up dry. I feel that there has to be a way to do this, but can't figure it out. Is it possible to do at all? And if not I would really like to find some official documentation from Cisco stating that the ports are on by default and cannot be disabled so that I have something to give to our auditors.
Thanks! You cannot shut off the telnet service completely on an IOS router, including the CGR 2010. This can be done on NX-OS ("no service telnet").
As Leo notes and as you mentioned you're already doing, securing the vty lines is considered a good practice. You might also add control plane policing. I've seen that configuration pass NERC audits used in nuclear plants here in the US.
As far as getting something official from Cisco, you'd have to open a TAC case or work with your reseller to get something from the business unit. -
Is it possible to completely disable quicklook
We have a quantum tape archive which appears as a fiber connected volume on a 10.6.4 client. Users push files to the quantum via Finder drag and drop. The files then goto a temporary landing pad (which is a hard drive) for several hours and then copied to tape and deleted from the landing pad - however a stub remains which looks identical to the original file but doesn't contain any data except metadata.
Users that are restoring data from the quantum volume use Finder to locate the file (the stub) and then drag and drop to the destination required. The quantum tape archive then grabs the file off tape and drops it onto the landing pad before it is then pushed to the required destination.
This all works fine until the user accidentally hits the space-bar whilst on a file in the quantum volume - this triggers a restore and consumes resources. If I can disable quicklook on the client then I can eradicate the issue.
*How do I completely disable quicklook?*
NB If you don't know how to do this please don't reply. I have so far tried:
• +sudo launchctl unload com.apple.quicklook.plist+ reboot
• +sudo vi com.apple.quicklook.plist+ adding
+<key>Disabled</key>
<true/>+ then +sudo launchctl load com.apple.quicklook.plist+ reboot
• Reluctant to try this as a permissions repair will kill it: http://hintsforums.macworld.com/showpost.php?p=485190&postcount=23
Thanks in advance!Did you try:sudo launchctl unload -w com.apple.quicklook.plistThe disable flag in the plist is no longer used as you think it is. See unload in the [man page|http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/Darwin/Reference/Man Pages/man1/launchctl.1.html].
Sounds like a dumb idea to disable a useful feature instead of teaching the users to not do that.
Edit: And, repairing permissions won't undo it. What they did was disable certain generators by changing permissions on the folders. The launchctl command does not change any permissions.

Is it possible to completely disable the discrete GPU?
My discrete GPU is damaged, and the computer keeps getting Kernal panic whenever it uses it for a few minutes. I have to stick to the integrated GPU, but the computer keeps switching to the discrete GPU and causing my computer to crash. Is there some kind of Terminal command I could use to disable it?

Is it possible to completely disable Collage in screen saver.
Apple provides some beautiful shots for Screen Saver (SS) Nature Cosmos Forest ect. I also have some of my own shot also in there. When the SS starts and they are presented Square on to the Display I am a happy camper. I have gone through the settings for each one to make sure that they all will be presented that way. But every so often for what seems to be a random act they present themselves in the collage form of display. By the same token will go back to the square on display. Will someone who knows shed some light on this. I do not particularly like the collage format. I run an iMac 22 " 2.4 Ghz 2 gig Ram 10.6.2. I am ----Heiner Toelle

I want to disable Internet access to user using GPO
I am using Win Server 2008 R2, I want to disable the users from accessing Internet which are in that OU. Can anyone tell me how is it possible ?
Hi,
Disabling Internet access using software on the client is inherently difficult. The client isn't aware of what is an internal resource (like an Intranet page for example) as opposed to an Internet resource. You can use GPOs to disable specific programs
(like browsers) or to change how traffic is routed by the client but in order to effectively control who can and can't access the Internet, your best bet is a perimeter device like a proxy or firewall that sits between your clients and the Internet and is
integrated with AD so it can manage access to the Internet based on users, groups, IP addresses, etc.
The closest you can come without a proxy is to configure a proxy server address for those users using the Internet Explorer Maintenance component (found under User Configuration\Windows Settings). This proxy can either be a non existent address or
if you want more control over the error messages users get, it can be an internal web server with a page that provide a custom message. The same configuration will allow you to list specific URLs that are exempt in case you have specific web sites, internal
or external that must be available.
Note that this option will apply to all browsing, internal and Internet based, but will only impact IE. Internet access using other browsers or other software will not be impacted unless that software leverages the IE proxy configuration (which many
applications do).
Hope this helps,

Mail automatically adds certificates to Keychain Access. How to disable?
Is there a way to tell Mail not to automatically store certificates from digitally signed emails (in this case, using Verisign) in Keychain Access?
The problem is this:
When the old certificate expires from someone else, I create a new one, and have them send a signed email to my address. Mail then automatically adds the new certificate to my Keychain Access. I then go into Keychain Access and delete the old certificate, so that I can send secure and encrypted messages to them. However, if I go back to one of their saved OLD emails, it automatically adds the old certificate back to my Keychain Access. And when I go to create a new email to them, it often will use that old certificate, which no longer works for them.
I am looking for a way to better manage this or find out what others are doing out there with the same problem.
Keychain should have an "archive" section to put old certificates into. These then can be referenced to open old secure and encrypted messages, but not allowed to be used for sending new email.Additionally, lets say something happens to your certificate and you need to download it again. In this case, from Verisign. A problem I have run into is when I go to Verisign, I am presented with the option of re-downloading my certificate. If I do this, there is no way on the Mac system that you specify this re-downloaded is your certificate. So I have to download a new certificate and then re-add my certificate to the rest of the employees and get theirs.
There needs to be an option to select "This is my certificate". Very much like in AddressBook, how you can specify different VCards as your own. -
We have a number of changes we are looking to implement and estimate we would need a 3 hour window to complete. We are proposing the changes be completed during normal hours of operation as it will require support from different teams in our IT department should we run into any issues. We will send a notification informing the users of the planned outage but do we have any way to disable their access so they are unable to connect at all? Our security setup controls access using a combination of team and data access profiles which would require of number of changes so I was looking for an easier solution if possible.
ThanksHi Pablo,
you have a lot of unanswered questions, are they all still open?
If you have solved then please close in a correct manner these threads assingning a "correct answer" and eventually add the solution if not present, read please How to close a discussion and why and Are you a responsible person in SCN?
About this issue, putting offline the appsets you're sure that no users can send data or execute packages only admins are allowed to work.
If you have management console installed you can see which users are connected and contact these to exit.
You can also prepare, useful for the future update queries to automatically backup the involved tables, exclude all the user from the teams, hoping you give the security rights to the teams and not to the users, so they will exists in BPC but without rights and when finished to restore the tables.

It looks like you've got a couple of different things going on
here.
If you want to disable http, do this in the WL properties file:
weblogic.httpd.enable=false
your getInitialContext should figure out what port your naming
service is on unless you've hardcoded it to be localhost:80, true?
I switch between ports 80 and 7001 all the time without problems.

Hi,
Can someone tell me how do I disable the HTTP access to
Weblogic.
The environment I am running on my dev machine would be

Weblogic 5.1+ SP6. I am redirecting any HTTP request to
the secure
port and that part is working. But I want to be able to

disable any HTTP requests all together. Is there a way
to do this.
In the weblogic.properties file, if I change the weblogic.system.listenPort
property to point to anything other than port 80, it gives
me errors
on the WLInitialContext. What else do I need to change
in this
so that I can listen on a port other than 80?
Thanks for your help,

Keychain Access becomes unresponsive after selecting any keychain!=login
I'm running a MacBook Air mid-2012 with OS X 10.8.4 with all updates - when I open Keychain Access I am able to look at the "login" keychain. When I click on the "System" or "System Root" keychains the application becomse unresonsive. The only way out is to Force Quit. I have admin priviledge.
I've verified the hard drive and permissions. I've run Keychain First Aid.
This happens every time. Any ideas? Thanks. Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2. -
Can't find repair keychain. keeps asking for my password over and over. keychain is not locked.
Tutorial: Resolving Keychain Issues
If you can't access your keychain, or forget your password If you can't get into your keychain file because you've forgotten your password or the keychain file appears to be corrupt, there are a couple of options.
First, if you've forgotten your password, you can use the "Keychain First Aid" utility to make the keychain password the same as the login password. This can be accomplished via the following process:
1. Open Keychain Access (located in Applications/Utilities)
2. Go to the "Keychain Access" menu and select "Preferences"
3. Click the "First Aid" tab
4. Make sure the "Synchronize login keychain password" box is checked
5. Close the Preferences window
6. Go to the "Keychain Access" menu and select "Keychain First Aid"
7. Enter your username and password
8. Click the "Repair" button
The second option is to completely delete your keychain then recreate it. This routine is useful if your keychain appears to be corrupt or otherwise inaccessible. This can be accomplished as follows:
1. Launch Keychain Access (located in Applications/Utilities)
2. Click "Show Keychains" in the lower-left corner of the window.
3. Select the problematic keychain from the left-hand pane.
4. Navigate to the "File" menu and select "Delete Keychain '(name of keychain)'"
5. Check all options for deletion and press "OK"
6. Create a new keychain by going to the "File" menu, then "New" and selecting
"New Keychain"
7. You can now make this keychain your default if you desire by selecting it, then
going to the "File" menu and selecting "Make '(name of keychain)' Default"
Login as root and perform repair In some cases, problems with keychains can only be resolved when logged in as the root user.
First, you want to enable the root user:
1. OS X Mountain Lion: Enable and disable the root user
2. OS X Lion: Enable and disable the root user
3. Mac OS X 10.6: Enabling the root user
4. Enabling and using the "root" user in Mac OS X
After enabling the root user, and logging in under this account, again open Keychain Access. First attempt repairs using Keychain First Aid, and failing that, delete then recreate the keychain as described above while logged in as root.
Persistently asked for stored passwords If you are persistently asked for passwords in various applications that you have specified should be remembered in a keychain, your "login" keychain may not be active for one reason or another.
Navigate to ~/Library/Keychains/ (this is the Library folder inside your user's home folder). Find the file named "login.keychain" and double-click it.
Failing that, select the "login" keychain within the Keychain Access application and make sure it is the default keychain by going to the "File" menu and selecting "Make 'Login' Default"
Turn off Keychain synchronization in applications having problems If specific applications are experiencing issues when accessing password-protected material, the Keychain may be to blame.
The above comes from an article published on MacFixit.com. -
Retrieval of secure note contents in Keychain Access?
Hi,
A puzzling thing just occurred. I was checking a secure note in Keychain Access, and when I clicked "show note" to view the contents, I found it completely empty.
This is survivable, but very annoying.
Since I have time machine running backups, can I retrieve the secure note from my backup drive?
If so, where do I look, and what files do I look for?
I'm on a 2.4G macbook pro and running OS 10.6.4.
Thanks for the help.
JThanks Josh. I think you are confirming what I was afraid of: that it is not possible to search the contents of a secure note. The Keychain access Find is limited to names of keycain items.
Oh well, I suppose it's no great hardship to copy and paste the contents of my secure note into TextEdit for the timeof the search. And then to trash the pasted text immediately ... securely. Hmmm ... could be better.
