Is it possible to compress /usr these days in Arch?

Between aufs2 not being in the kernel, and systemd, and the move to symlink /bin and /usr/bin, etc, is it possible to compress /usr?
I'd still like to do it if it is reasonably manageable to do. My hard drive and its slow speed is a cause of much angst for me.

@ drcouzelis- On the wiki there are old instructions on how to use a unionfs and squashfs as a way to make /usr writeable while taking advantage of everything else being expanded into memory from a squashfs.
Yes this is possible, but it would take a lot of work not only to get going, but also to maintain.  This is beause as you have already figured out, aufs2 is not in the kernel, but exists as a patchset.  There is a pf-kernel user repo though, and the pf patchset includes aufs2.  So I guess there is the possibility that it won't necessarily have to be as much a PITA to maintain as doing all of it manually.

  • What type of video camera do people use to edit professionally these days?

I use to own a Mini DVC camcorder that I would edit video with in Final Cut Pro. Now since my Mini DVC camcorder broke I'm shopping for a new video camera but found myself really confused on what I need to buy for a good professional video camera at this point. It seems like DVC camcorders have been turned obsolete and now my options is a camcorder with a hard drive or a sd card in it, unless there are other options I'm not seeing at the local best buy.
I'm a little hesitant with the SD and hard drive cameras just for the fact that I would think they would be compression the video when saving it to these new formats, and I also don't know what compression scheme there using. With a DVC all I had to do is shoot the video and then hook it up to my computer via firewire and capture it, this would allow me to compress the video while I was capturing it.
With these new cameras I have no clue on what compression scheme they use and if there even a good option for good professional video editing. I'm not looking to spend to much money, I was hoping I could get something between $200 - $400 tops, but I wouldn't spend this type of money till someone gave me a little advice on what format is right to use with computer video editing these days.
Any advice or recommendations would be very appreciated. If the price is right I would take standard definition (just for the fact that my Mac is a G4 and I don't really think it can do HD video that well), but if I could have an option to later shoot in HD that would be very helpful to.

With a DVC all I had to do is shoot the video and then hook it up to my computer via firewire and capture it, this would allow me to compress the video while I was capturing it.
DV video, recorded onto DVC (Digital Video Cassette) tapes, would NOT be compressed during capture. DV, DVCam and DVCPro (all varieties of the DV25 codec) is compressed 5:1 when recorded to tape. When you capture, all that happens is a straight digital transfer of 1s and 0s from the tape to your computer. No further compression was taking place.
What type of video camera do people use to edit professionally these days?
All types. Everything from Flip cameras to HDCam SR.
I'm a little hesitant with the SD and hard drive cameras just for the fact that I would think they would be compression the video when saving it to these new formats
You'd better get over that ... tape-based recording is going the way of the audio cassette.
I also don't know what compression scheme there using
Now you've hit upon what I consider to be the main problem with non-tape cameras; many manufacturers have taken to using codecs that were originally designed for final delivery, like H.264. So they need to be converted to an editable format PRIOR to editing. That's probably the reason that Apple developed the ProRes family of codecs. It's definitely a change in workflow. The other real issue I have with non-tape recording is the lack of a decent archive method. With tape you had a built-in archive medium; the tape itself. But with the new card-based recording, your archive options are limited and more expensive than tape.
    If the price is right
And what price would that be? What's your budget?

  • Finder is a shame in these days

    since mavericks,
finder dont show full music file tags...
rearrange his raws if move in a folder up and down and you look whats inside the folder...
dont remember his settings... for example, sorting settings...
every time i click on the finder in menu bar every time same size and centered...
in the searching area in finder maybe in deep strukture of your folder system you searching and clicking the x cross it goes automatically back to its startfolder...
    i really p...ed off
and yes i made every tipps i could get these days...
apple constructors and programer freaks... make it possible so that the finder work fine.
    cheers

If it's only happened the once then I wouldn't worry too much about it and just take it as one of those things. Otherwise, try keeping track of any potential triggers… like Acquisition.

  • Conflicted. No confidence in Apple's QC these days

You all know the problems I've been having with the Macbook Pro. I've tried three times to get one I'll stick with. The first one, the built to order one was fine, but I returned it in the fourteen days and switched it for the highest end off shelf one (the built to order one was the highest end one, but with no dedicated GPU). The replacement (this Mac) is one noisy machine with the chassis creaking when it feels like it, now I think the hinge has started as well. Its replacement was even worse with what it had wrong with it. I inspected it to check if it had the same issue and I found that if I push the bottom with the lightest possible pressure it flexed and made quite a bit of noise. Also found that the hinge was out off whack. One end was flush and the other stuck out from the body. So I returned the Mac, but still have this creaky machine. It's an intermittent issue, but seems more common these days. There doesn't seem to be any flex anywhere, sometimes it needs me to push real hard (fair enough in those cases), but other times just closing the thing will cause it to do it so I don't even know what's causing it or if it's meant to do this (something tells me it's not supposed to). Some times it's quiet and other times really loud. The keys also leave dirt marks on the screen after it's been transported. I don't remember the built to order one doing that, but I only had it a few days. I've had countless calls to Apple support and live chat sessions, that I can't be dealing with them again, just fed up with it. Hasn't even been four weeks and part of me wishes I'd never touched this thing.
Still a great laptop, but come on Apple, step up your QC! Two out of two bad ones isn't acceptable. I built my own PC earlier this year and not one piece of hardware had to be returned. I would have the exact same hardware configuration if I hadn't changed the GPU (old one was removed due to under-performance which was actually caused by a poor driver release by Nvidia, which meant the PSU was changed. Changed optical drive, because of an issue I thought was there, because it was making an interesting noise at startup that didn't sound right, turns out was normal operation). How is it I can build a computer with tighter hardware controls and QC for £500 less (not counting HE discount)? I've had Xboxes that are built better (in terms of what they were aiming for). I have no doubt this Mac will last a long time, it's just this issue is really disappointing. And no, this Mac has never been dropped.
I don't know if I should even try for another one, seeing as they've got it wrong 66% of the time. I'll probably get one where the chassis is bent, that's what Apple products do these days isn't it? I've had problems with every OEM PC/Mac manufacturer to date. It's like their throwing their computers around the factory or playing football with them or something. Whereas, I've built one computer (my very first build) and from a hardware standpoint, reliability is 100% (there's one known machining mistake with my case, but a drill will fix that). Windows 8 on the other hand is a different story.
Anyway, this post is getting a bit too long, so, should I try for a 4th one (doubt they'll get it right even at the third time of trying)? OEMs all suck, Apple included (I could start a whole new thread on their customer service, and how these forums never work!). Probably just build from now on since OEMs can't seem to get it right. Could have just saved the hassle and just got a cheap tablet/laptop hybrid, but then...Windows 8.

If that were true, why write about it?
You have a new MBP.  You should deal with Apple support which entitles to 90 days of free telephone support and there is the 1 year warranty.

  • How Large is Too Large for a Movie These Days?

Hi, we're developing our portfolio site which will have a LOT
of images that must be very high quality. So to keep quality up I
know we have to sacrifice file size (or vice-versa).
We've divided each of the sections of images into separate
movies so there is usually less than 8 images per movie. That way
someone would only need to wait if they clicked to see a specific
    movie.
    - My question is: What is considered 'large' for a movie file
    in these days of broadband?
We are not planning on having preloaders for the individual
movies, and would like them to come up pretty quickly (so no
sluggishness or blank screens). I'm also looking into how to have
the movies loading in the background so that there would be less or
no delay once they are called up.
As an example, one of our larger sized movie tests showed a
size of around 350k for med-high quality, and about 750k for really
good quality. We prefer to have the quality of the latter, but
don't want people to get frustrated waiting.
On our local med-fast broadband (3.0Mb/Sec DSL) the large
movie loads up pretty much instantly and looks great. But we don't
    want to alienate anyone.
    THANKS!

I think you simply have to judge your audience - are they
likely to have ultra fast broadband or ten year old dial up
    connections ?
My rule of thumb is to work for the lowest connection likely.
In the UK most medium to large commercial organistaions (my
market) have at least a 4mb connection so I optimise everything for
that. (Always bearing in mind that it's shared by hundreds or
thousands of users at any given location).

Hi , I suhail khan from india and i am user of iMac system 10,1.These days i am facing the sound enabling issue with my iMac system I am not able to hear sound in my iMac system. So kindly suggest me how to enable sound in my iMac . Please no the needful.

Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried.
    1. If you've recently plugged anything into the audio-out (headphone) port, plug and unplug it a couple of times.
    2. From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Sound ▹ Output
Check the settings. The internal speakers should be selected as the output device, the Mute box should not be checked, and the volume slider should be at least halfway to the right.
    3. Look inside the headphone port. If a red light is coming from the port, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a headphone mini-stereo jack of the proper size.Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by your warranty.
    4. Boot in safe mode by holding down the shift key at the startup chime. It will take much longer than usual. You don't have to log in; just reboot as usual (without holding any keys) when the login screen appears. (Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.)
    5. Reset the NVRAM.
    6. Reset the SMC.
    7. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data as a precaution. You won't need your backup unless something goes wrong.
    8. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to bare metal from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Is networking reliable these days?

    Hi,
We have a old iMac and someone suggested using it as a server and networking our computers (another iMac and an eMac) using OS X Server. I know this will be great efficiency-wise but I'm a little concerned. Are we likely to suffer network crashes etc or are they much more stable these days?
I would be grateful for any feedback.
    Many thanks!
    PowerPC G3   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

One hardly needs to use OS X Server if all you want to do is share files. Here is some reading material that may be helpful:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106658
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106796
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107369
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106461
If you want to be able to share files and share an internet connection from a cable or DSL modem:
Setting up a local Ethernet network
    Equipment needed:
Cable/DSL modem: usually supplied by the ISP
Gateway/Router: at least a 4-port router, but you can get them with more ports if you need them. (Alternatively, you can get a switching hub to provide additional ports.)
CAT 5 Ethernet cables: one cable is needed for each device connected to the router plus one to connect the router to the cable/DSL modem.
    1. Connect the Cable/DSL modem to the router's WAN port using an Ethernet cable (CAT 5 for 10/100.)
    2. Connect each computer to the router's LAN ports using Ethernet cables. If you have network printers, etc. connect them to a LAN port on the router. If the router doesn't have enough ports, then you will need to purchase one with more ports or connect a switching hub to the router.
    3. Now, for each Mac open its Network preference pane. Select the Built-in Ethernet port for configuration. In the TCP/IP configuration window set the connection/configuration to DHCP from the dropdown menu. Set your Location dropdown menu to Automatic and the Show dropdown menu to Built-in Ethernet.
    4. Shut everything off. First, turn on the Cable/DSL modem and wait for the connect lights to indicate it has connected to the ISP. Next, turn on the router and wait to see if the Cable/DSL modem's communication status light starts to flicker. Also, if there is a status light on the router it should show a connection. Last, power up the computer. If all is well the TCP/IP control panel or Network pref pane should indicate an IP has been obtained from the router, usually in the 192.168.nnn.nnn range. If it's 169.xxx.xxx.xxx then you don't really have a connection.
    5. If you have network printers connected each printer will have to be assigned its own unique IP address in the router's address range (usually 192.168.nnn.nnn.) Assign the printer(s) IP addresses above the number of computers that will be connected but within the router's DHCP address assignment range. Consult the router's documentation for that information. Consult the printer manual for how to assign an IP address to the printer. When you install the printer driver and/or Add the printer you will add it as an IP printer or LPR printer and use the IP address you assigned to the printer.

So, I've read the messages about not using a separate partition for /Usr.  I'm also getting some errors on bootup because of this.
What I'm wondering is if it's possible to merge /Usr to root?  How can it be done and is it safe?

Thank you so much.  Do you know how this could be done for a total noob.?.
You could start by reading 'man mount', especially the start of the description, and take it from there.

Where can i find my windows product key ? am I not allowed to know this these days ?

If you bought  a notebook with Windows 8, there are no product key stickers anymore.
The key is now digitally encoded in the BIOS.
    http://www.mydigitallife.info/windows-8-to-have-oem-activation-3-0/
I don't have a notebook that came with windows 8, so I don't know if you can see it in the BIOS or not but that would the place to look.

  • Deleting Drop Frames these days?

In the old days you just held down Alt while dropping in your background image and one of the options was to replace drop frames (what IS the point of those anyway?) along with the background picture from the Theme (how I wish you could just start with a blank project! - sigh)
But now, (iDVD 7.1.2) that option is no longer there. I just get 'replace background' or 'make a slideshow.'
Surely there must stil be a way to delete these annoying boxes - or am I being even more of a dork than usual?
    Many thanks
    Tom

And while I'm here - where is the highlight colour box these days? I can find the text colour box, but I don't want text, just frames.

  • What versions of WinXP have MSJVM these days ???

What versions of WinXP have MSJVM these days ???
Where do I get the best info on this ????
I'm looking for good reasons for my applet to not support MSJVM (use 1.1.4 jdk).
I'm tired of MS JIT bugs.

Sure. There are 2 components to compiler compatibility - the byte code emitted by the compiler, and the libraries the compiler uses. Sometimes just reverting the bytecode will achieve compatibility, sometimes not. Depends on the details of the changes that created the dissonance.
The other component affecting compatibility is the runtime and its supporting data.
For maximum compatibility, you want to use the compiler, jvm, and libraries with the least differences from the (in this case) MS jvm - and if that isn't stating the obvious, I don't know what is :)

Do Sun's Support team really watch the forum topics these days? I really doubt it. I haven't seen anyone from Sun's support team really participating in the topics as per the following.

Any Comments...Hmmmm...that doesn't really have anything to do with layoffs.
In the past different people using Sun signatures post fairly consistently for varying periods of time. I don't believe anyone ever did it more than 6 months. And that was only one individual. Most of the others don't seem to last more than a month.
And my observation is that those that are doing the posting are not very experienced.
