Is it possible to connect an external Graphics card to a 13" rMBP and use it within OSX?

Considering buying the new 13" rMBP with 8Gb RAM and wondered if I would be able to use an external GPU with OSX apps just to futureproof the machine for years to come as I will be using it for some light HD video editing at University away from home at the moment so getting a iMac or Mac Pro isnt practicle or economically feasable.

  • I would like to connect an external hard drive to my time machine and use it as a network drive to store itunes and iPhoto  how do i do this

I have just purchased a new my book hard drive and would like to connect it to my time capsule and store my itunes and iphoto contentent there to free up space on my internal hard drive . Can this be done and what is the process?

I'd like to store my Aperture /IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive.
That is fine and recommended.. use the fastest disk you can afford.. ie Thunderbolt>USB3>FW800>USB2.
In addition, I'd like to partition the external hard drive so that Time Machine can use it to both back up my IMac and the external library drives.
Let me be clear.. you want to partition the one disk.. use it for TM and move your files to the external disk.. and then backup to the same disk.. You can do it.. but that is not a backup.. that is an experiment in how long you can get away with running files and backups on the same disk before you lose everything.. like Russian Roulette.. pull the trigger enough times and laws of probability will do you in.
You must have backups on a different disk .. otherwise it is pointless.
Can I set up a RAID 5 format for redundancy?
No.. you can buy special USB and Thunderbolt external drives that support RAID..
BUT that is still not a backup.. let me show why.. you make a silly move and corrupt your file in aperture.. it is not that rare.
Raid will corrupt all copies of the files.. it is replicated across all disks.
Delete a photo it is deleted across all disks.. you have no recovery.
Alway, always consider RAID system one disk.. backup onto another disk.. and if the photos or movies are at all important to you.. ie your family .. make another copy and store in a relatives house.. There is no such thing as too much redundancy.

  • Is it possible to connect an external USB 2.0 hard drive to a Thunderbolt Display?

    Hello,
Is it possible to connect an external USB 2.0 hard drive to a Thunderbolt Display and back up a MacBook Air to the external hard drive using Time Machine?
I intend to connect my MacBook Air to the Thunderbolt Display using a Thunderbolt cable.
I would also like to connect my printer via USB 2.0 to the Thunderbolt Display. Will this also work?
Effectively using the Thunderbolt Display as a USB hub or docking station.
    Regards,
    Ben

    Ok, thanks.
My 1 cable to ThunderBolt Display objective
MacBook Air -> (via 1 x Thunderbolt cable) -> Thunderbolt Display -> (via 1 x USB cable) -> USB 2.0 external hard drive
I would like to know if this configuration is possible and Time Machine will run correctly.
Your 2 cable suggestion (I think)
    MacBook Air -> (via 1 x Thunderbolt cable + 1 x USB cable) -> Thunderbolt Display + USB 2.0 external hard drive
This configuration requires 2 cables to disconnect/reconnect from my MacBook Air.

    Here's a quote from it
"The video itself looked fine when it played properly, but it stopped and started constantly, and often displayed with huge, ugly artifacts. And at times, the app would freeze completely and require a force quit.
Just to make sure it wasn’t a problem with one Blu-ray disc, I tried some others. With Hot Tub Time Machine the results were much, much worse. It got a few seconds into the United Artists logo before the movie and completely froze playback. On several attempts. With David Cronenberg’s The Fly, playback was generally better—but the software played the ‘making of’ movie instead of the actual film. I thought there might have been a preference to help with the movie selection, but—wait for it—the Preferences item didn’t do anything when I selected it."

Is it possible to connect an external camera via bluetooth to the Iphone 4 and use it with Facetime, if not.. why?

Ok, in 2015 is it possible now? I would like to use an iPad and Face to share content between a dressmaker in Asia and a customer in the US, and I would like to attach better camera's than the built-in camera's on the devices.
Any thoughts? Any updates to the original post?

I DO have a 2006 Mac Pro that I've also maxed out and it's STILL a BEAST and i love using it... but wanted to see how i could increase my macbook pro too, seeing it can run mavericks and ALL my adobe CC apps too.

  • External graphics cards

I have read some information about this Thunderbolt port and some people are say that there is no reason why we cant have a external graphics card for the 2011 mac's Surly this would be a great addition esp if it was a apple upgrade as this could potential move apple in to a different direction with PC gamers.
Either way back to the point of the question, will this ever happen, is it even possible??

It's certainly possible as Thunderbolt is basically an external PCI Express port... the same port that an internal card would typically connect to.  However, just having access to the systems PCI bus isn't enough, there would need to be driver support to allow switching between the internal and external cards... as well as drivers for the external card itself.  While it may happen sometime, I wouldn't expect to see anything in the near future.  There are very few Thunderbolt devices at this point.  Developing an external card which will rival the internals in performance is going to be an expensive process and it may not be considered economically viable.  The current video cards (especially in the upper end 15" and 17" machines) are actually quite gaming capable.  To get performance similar to today's highend desktops, you're going to need an external power supply as well.  Those cards use a significant amount of power to get that performance.  You're more likely to see the same gradual increase in notebook GPU performance that we typically see over the years.

  • External Graphics Card?

Hello.  I am currently running the Macbook Pro non-retina display, 13 inch screen with intel core I5 processers.  I decided that I was going to put Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack One onto my computer via bootcamp, so that I would be able to play Battlefield 3 on my mac.  Now before any of you recommend that I just buy a whole new computer, I do not have the budget currently to do this.  My budget is 100-250 dollars.  I have the built in Intel Hd 4000 GPU, and as many of you probably already know, is a terrible card.  I play Battlefield 3 on low settings, and average 18 FPS.  I am looking for an external graphics card capable of running this game better then my current graphics card.  I haven't been able to find much in google, and I would really appreciate the help.  Thanks.

I emailed a Silverstone representative and I found out that they're expecting to release the T004 in the first quarter of 2014. I'm guessing that they'll release it in time for CES, which goes from 7th to the 10th of January. Although, it's expected to cost somewhere between $200 for it, and that's not counting the cost of the graphics card, which will be at least $50 for a good one and I'm not sure if Silverstone will include a Thunderbolt cable, which could be another $30-40 expense. So, in total you're looking at a minimum of $250, but that definitely beats buying another computer. I'm also looking forward to the release of the T004, because my Mac also has only integrated graphics, which aren't good when you're playing StarCraft for a couple hours a day. I think I'll get a GTX 650 for it. It'll be great for StarCraft!
Regarding compatibilty, I'm sure it will be fine. I know that MSI was working on the GUS II, which is similar to the T004. They were able to get it to work on a Mac running Windows by making a driver which tricked the computer into thinking the GPU was connected through PCIE. The Silverstone representative I emailed also said that the T004 will be 100% Mac-Compatible.

  • Is it possible to upgrade/add a graphics card to a Pavilion dv7-7000 laptop?

I've been doing a lot of research lately, to mostly no avail, about whether or not my HP Pavilion dv7-7025dx laptop can have a dedicated GPU added to it, as currently it only has the integrated Intel HD 4000 Mobile graphics card.
Mostly I've come across the unfortunate agreement that most laptops cannot have their graphics cards upgraded/swapped out, since the graphics card is soldered on to the motherboard. However, after talking to an HP "support representative", they said they believed it was possible to add a graphics card, as long as it is compatible with the HM77 45W UMA Motherboard my computer has.
Furthermore, after finding the maitenence and service manual online for my computer ( http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03221579.pdf ) it says that it could have come with switchable graphics, specifically the Nvidia Geforce 630M or 650M.
So I am wondering, is it really at all possible to add a dedicated graphics card, either by having switchable graphics or something else? Or am I stuck with the integrated Intel HD graphics?
If I can upgrade/add a new card, where would I be able to find/buy a compatible one, and would I be able to install it myself or would I need to go to a local computer repair?
My laptop is the HP Pavilion dv7-7025dx Entertainment Notebook.

    Hi,
You can't add a dedicated graphics card to the system like this. The vga is soldered to the board so no way you can just plug it in like on a desktop. However, you can buy a new motherboard with the dedicated graphics card on it. It also requires a new heat sink.
    Manual: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03221579.pdf
You need a 682040-001 board plus 682061-001 heat sink to have a dedicated graphics card on your laptop. Have a look on ebay for the part numbers.

    You're very welcome.
I am not a PC repair tech by trade or training.
Other than the replacement motherboard, and fan and heatsink combination, I wouldn't know if any other parts are required.
The parts you need are listed in chapter 3 of the service manual with the part numbers.
I also don't know if the boards come with the windows 8 product key included in the BIOS.
There may be multiple motherboards listed, so make sure you get the right one.
Same for the fan and heatsink.

  • Is it possible to connect R/3 4.7 (a.k.a Enterprise) and BI7.0/SEM-BCS6.0?

    Hi,
    Does anyone have some experience or knowledge on this question;
is it possible to connect R/3 4.7 (a.k.a Enterprise) and BI7.0/SEM-BCS6.0?
If yes, what is required for R/3 insatallation?
For example, SP updating on PI_BASIS, SAP-BW or so.
    regards,

    Hi, greg
    Thanks for your experiential reply.
    > it's a pain to rerun iterations with such an interface, though.
I want to know some more, if it colud be.
    And, I'm still afraid of interactivity between R/3 4.7 and SEM-BCS 6.0.
Is there anything required for R/3 insatallation?
