Is it possible to connect to a Power Macintosh 8100/100 running v7.5.5 from a current PC via AppleTalk? If not is there any software that will allow me to?

The question says it all. We are trying to add an old Power Macintosh 8100/100 v7.5.5 to our network. We tried using PC-MACLAN but it requires OS X.  Is there any way to get around this or is there any software available add this to our network?  Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi,
If you wish to merely transfer files, one idea could be to have one ftp or web server on each machine, and then use appropriate clients (ftp programs or web browsers).
TCP/IP software is available under System 7.5.5. The 8100/100 can use standard RJ-45 Ethernet cabling via a suitable adapter for AAUI-15 (such as the Apple Ethernet Twisted-Pair Transceiver M0437).
For the Mac, the now free program NetPresenz could perhaps be of interest as a server solution.

  • Will any device that will allow me to connect two monitors to a Mac Mini?

I don't know if this is possible, but I'd like to connect a second display to my Mac Mini to go with my Apple Studio display. Is there any piece of hardware that'll allow me to split the audio signal?

Other World Computing ( http://macsales.com ) sells similar usb adapters. And they have a reputation for good tech support. You might try asking them if their usb video adapters are able to do this.
The link to their adapter is here:

  • Is there an accessory that will allow me to connect my iPad 2 to a TV and at the same time have it charging?

I'm going on vacation and want to watch movies on a TV by connecting my iPad 2 to the TV.  I've got the cable for that.  However, I'm afraid of the battery going dead right in the middle of a program.  I've noticed that the iPad dock only has one outlet in the back for a cable.  Is there a dock or another accessory that would allow me to have my iPad charging while I also have it connected to the TV to watch the movie?  Thanks.

If your TV is HDMI (and most are now) the Digital AV adapter does just that. Just remember that you need to have an HDMI cable.

I have a bunch of movies downloaded on my IPad. However, I cannot play them on the TV in my dorm because it uses RCA connectors. Is there any sort of adapter I can buy from Apple that lets me play them?

Is there a app that will tell all apps that are running and possibly how much battery power they use?

You don't need an app to do this.  Here's how you get the battery info.  Go to Settings>More>Battery. This will show you all the active apps and their individual battery usage.

  • Is there an adapter that will charge my 3g while I'm connected with USB2.0?

My 3rd generation iPod, like many others here, no longer connects via firewire- even after trying every trick mentioned here AND switching cables, computers etc.
I realize that the 3g cannot charge via USB2.0 AND will rapidly discharge when connected to the USB2.0 port (powered of course).
    My question is:
Is there a plug or adapter that will allow me to connect my iPod to my mac via USB2.0 ( thus mounting it and making it accessible with iTunes etc ) and charge/power it at the same time. Maybe, something with an extra cable that goes to a wall transformer like the palm pilots used to have.
My iPod works fine as a player it just won't connect with Firwire and won't stay charged long enough, (2-5 minutes) while connected with USB2.0. YES, the battery seems to be fine. It will play for over two hours on its own. Also, my Apple care ran out in June and I can't afford a new iPod right now.
An adapter like I described would get me over the hump until somebody figures out what happened to all the 3rd generation iPods this summer!
    Thanks!

It may not be compatile with the iPad. iPads are not specifically mentioned in the compatibility specs here:

See the following page for more info & compatibility. I do not believe there is any type of adapter that will get you compatibility.  The iPhone and iPod touch are the only devices being mentioned as compatible.

My iphone 4s power button is stuck. is there any chance that it can be fix?

This will be covered for free under Apple Warranty. Until you do this, a software workaround is a Virtual Lock Button in Assistive Touch on iPhone. Tap Settings App>General>Accessibility>Assitive Touch>ON>Tap new Virtual White Screen Button>tap Device> tap Lock Screen. If you hold down on the Lock Screen Icon it will give you the "slide to power off". To turn iPhone ON, connect to Power Source with USB Cable, via Charger or Computer USB Port.

You don't need an application, just plug a compaitble monitor into the display port of your MacBook Pro, set the screen up in System Preferences>Displays

I have an older Power Mac G5 Quad, and my video card just went out. I am trying to find a video card that will work for my Power Mac. I have duel screens but I can't seem to find the appropriate video card. The serial number on my computer is: RM620603R6W. Apple won't help me because the computer is older than suggested. Please give me the exact video card that will work best for my computer.

Hi Mike, make sure the card has Mac ROM, or is a PC card with Mac ROMs flashed to it...
G5 PCIe options are listed here:

My 4th Gen iPod Nano isn't displaying a "Use iTunes to restore" message, but iTunes is displaying a restore message when I connect it. I have original music that I can't back up on my iPod. Is there any way that I can fix the iPod without restoring it?

It's not designed to work like this. When you sync, the iPod stores some information that basically says 'this iPod belongs to computer xyz'. Apple did this to prevent copyright issues (syncing someone else's music).
If you really want to do this, you'll have to at least tie both iTunes installations to the same account. Maybe have them sync with each other.

  • Power Macintosh 7500/100 thinks all floppies are locked.

My new (to me) Power Macintosh 7500/100 is thinking all disks I put in it are locked. Is there a way to fix this without replacing the drive?
    Thanks,
    George W.

This is how I clean floppy drives:
    1) Remove floppy drive from the computer.
    2) Remove the cover.
    3) Use a can of compressed air, making sure all the loose dust is gone.
    4) Use cotton swabs to reach the tighter spots, making sure all dirt is cleaned out.
    5) Lubricate the mechanism and springs with 3-in-1 multipurpose oil, a silicone grease or something similar. Do not use WD-40 or white lithium grease - these won't last long.
    6) Reassemble the drive and install it back into the computer.
    7) Use a floppy drive cleaning diskette/kit to clean the read/write heads of the drive. Although this can be done manually with rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab, it is more safe to use a cleaning diskette because you cannot damage the drive this way. If doing it manually, please be careful and don't stretch the read/write head spring too far - otherwise, the upper read/write head will never go down again.
If you follow these easy procedures, your drive should be good as new. Good luck!

It's not that simple. You need a "smart" device to connect a hard drive to, like a Time Capsule, or another computer, or an Airport Extreme/Express that was made to share a drive, or some other brand router that has a USB port for sharing a drive, etc.

  • Is there an adaptor or interface that will allow me to connect a thunderbolt device to my late 2011 Mac Pro Firewire 800 port?

Is there an adaptor or interface that will allow me to connect a thunderbolt device to my late 2011 Mac Pro Firewire 800 port?

    lllaass is correct.
To use ThunderBolt devices, a computer must have left the factory with a ThunderBolt port.
There are no known work-arounds, and there are not likely to be any because Intel controls the chips and is not interested in anything less than the full [including Video features] implementation.
