Is It Possible To Copy Files To Multiple DVDs/CD-Rs In One Shot?

Hi...
I want to copy a complete set of files I have to make a backup of them onto DVD. However, the total amount of disk space is larger than a standard dvd... Is it possible for someone to copy them so they span several DVDs by splitting up the data within OSX?

Thanks for the suggestion... I did think of Toast but I was hoping maybe there was a way I could do the same task within OSX itself without buying additional software. Maybe a good added feature though for future versions of OSX.
Thanks,
-J

  • Copying Files to Multiple DVDs

I know I can use the Burn Folder option to copy several files on my Macbook Pro to a DVD. However, if my source is greater then 4.0gb I am asked to split the data up. Is there a way that I can simply copy 12GB of data to multiple DVDs and just swap the disks when asked?
The data files are to be imported later into a Windows machine.
    Thx!

No. The simplest solution is to use a tool like Stuffit Deluxe and split the folder into 3 files (compressed or not) which would then be combinable on the PC side.
Otherwise, as you have a laptop is there any reason why nwtowrk file sharing wouldn't work for you?

  • Burning Large File to Multiple DVDs

I am trying to burn a large group of files to multiple DVDs. I have Roxio Toast at work and all I do is drag all the items into the CD and it tells me how many DVDs it will require and asks me for the next one when the first is done. Pretty easy. I dont have toast at home and am wondering how to do that with the default built in burn software.
I did a search, but my search skills are lacking and after pages of non-related seaching I figured I would just post the question.

I'm also interested in this question and am confused.
Are you talking about * Explanation 1) making duplicates of a CD without having to manually drag every single folder onto a dvd - or * Explanation 2) copying one set of data, too large for one DVD, across multiple DVDs (like span/concatenation).
Itchandscratch - in the subject line you say 'large file' then 'group of files' in your explanation. If the files are in a group (comprised of smaller individual files) could you not say, halve them and burn onto two disks - or is the folder system of the group complex? But then you say
"I have Roxio Toast at work and all I do is drag all the items into the CD and it tells me how many DVDs it will require and asks me for the next one when the first is done" Suggests not Explanation 1
KJK555 You say "Drag and drop files and folders until image reaches DVD size.
Close image." Which made me think we are talking about explnation 1
Sorry if i'm being stupid. I'm interested but confused! : )

I am viewing your question from different perspective, that is, the issue that you face when you are ripping VOBs from a second DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc using Premiere Elements,
It is best to give the Premiere Elements version and computer operating system that it is running on. In the absence of that, I will generalize.
    Assuming that you are using
    Premiere Elements 12
    Add Media
    "DVD Camera or Computer Drive"
    Video Importer
Typically the Video Importer Save In: is C:\Users\Owner\Videos
Each of your DVD discs is going to have the same names for the ripped VOBs (VTS_01_1.VOB and so on depending on the duration of the movie). Consequently, after the ripping of the first DVD's VOBs and their save to Videos, you will end up with that "files already existing..." block for the ripping of the VOBs from the second DVD.
The answer is, for each DVD disc VOB ripping, to plan ahead and create and set for different folders in Videos in the Save In field of the Video Importer.
Please review and then let us know if that works for you. Please do not hesitate to ask if you need clarification on anything that I have written.
    Thank you.

  • Lion won't copy files to multiple external hard drives at the same time

    Hi there,
I upgraded my OS to Lion receently and I've noticed a bit of odd 'bug'
I want to copy the same files/directories from my Mac to my 2 external USB hard drives, but I find that Lion only lets me copy the files one hard drive at a time and not simultaniously, whereas Leopard/ Snow Leopard would let copy the files over simultaniously.
Has anyone else noticed this and is there a fix? I'm a photographer so I need 2 backups of the photographs I take and it's really annyoing that I can't transfer files simultaniously.
I always use Lacie hard drives and I've also noticed the same thing with my WD hard drives. All of my externals have been indexed and at Mac formatted.
    Any help would be apprecated.

By the way- I did create an Automator workflow to copy files to drives, and then I just use two copies of that workflow, and everything works fine. But I should just be able to drag and drop, this is not an elegant solution to a simple finder issue ...

  • Cannot copy file from backup DVD to HD folder

Whenever I finish a project, I had burn the various files (movie, text, pictures, pages, etc.) onto DVDs to free up hard disk space for present projects. Usually, I would use a disk image to burn those DVDs. Recently, I needed material from those DVDs and I found that I could not copy them from the DVD to my work folders on my hard disk by dragging them from the DVD window to another open window. I could only do it the roundabout way of opening those files individually using the programmes (like pages, iPhoto, etc) and then use the 'Save As ...' option in the File Menu. It was a huge hassle. I then looked into my other DVDs and found that they were the same way. I find DVDs easier to manage. Is it because I am using disk images or is there something wrong in the way I burn the DVDs. Please advise

When I try to move the files from the Finder Window with the files on the DVD, I do not get the plus sign when I try to drag it to the desktop or any other window. Even when I try with the option key pressed, there is no plus sign with the mouse arrow. Someone suggested to use the terminal and I did. It was a hassle, though.

  • Is it possible to copy 8mm video to DVD using my MacBook?

I want to copy 8mm vidoe to DVD using my MacBook. How can I tell if it is possible?

Do you mean 8mm film? Or "digital 8" video tape?
There are many services that can convert film to digital formats, but they're expensive. The most reasonably priced service I have found is called "Yesvideo". Google it.
If it's "digital 8" the way to do that is to import it from your "digital 8" camcorder using iMovie. Then you use iDVD to create a DVD.

  • Error when trying to copy files to a DVD+RW

I am unable to copy images to a brand new blank DVD+RW disc. I keep getting an error message "Current disc canot be overwritten...". Please help.

I can use Windows 7 to copy the picture files by opening the blank DVD and dragging the files to the disc folder; I just cannot see any way to use PSE 9 to copy the files because it keeps giving me the error message that the disc cannot be overwritten.
I would like to use PSE 9 to copy images to a DVD, rather than have to use windows.

  • Copied Files From CD/DVD Locked

    Hiya folks,
When i copy files from a data cd/dvd to my home partition they are locked and can only be modified by root. How do I gain permission?
    Thanks
    Andy

Ghost1227 wrote:if only root can edit a file stands to reason that only root can change permissions on it!
I would say a user can change rwx-permissions without su/sudo as long as (s)he is the owner of the file(s).
I just tried it. Copying a file from cdrom wrote the file with these rights: -r-xr-xr-x and my useraccount as the owner. So I can use 'chmod +w' without su/sudo to make the file writeable.

  • How To Move or Copy Files From Multiple Sources To MBP

I will shortly be taking delivery of a new MBP. Currently I have my files spread across an eMac Panther partition, a OS 9 partition, and several partitions on 2 different external hard drives (iPhoto library is on one and iTunes Library on another.
Now with a large HD on the MBP + Time Capsule I wish to organise files in a more orderly fashion onto the MBP. The only reason for the previous chaos has been dealing with too small disk space and I prefer a more orderly arrangement
Can someone more experienced than me please advise on the most efficient way to go about this as I have never transfered to a new computer before.
    Tony

The usual procedure is to use Migration Assistant which will probably start automatically on the new Mac. This allows you to copy from another Mac or from other drives. This will copy almost everything if you choose but you can restrict what is copied too. It will copy your internet settings, passwords, Mail and so on. However much of the organisation will be as it already is so there are alternatives except that everything will be on the one drive.
If you start your old Mac in Target mode by holding the T key during startup you can connect it using a firewire cable and it will appear as an external drive on the new Mac. You can copy all the files that interest you and place them as you want. However you should note that new Macs expect to find certain information in certain locations. Migration Assistant attends to this automatically.
Your new Mac will probably be able to read the 2 external drives so you can either use Mig *** or simply drag & drop to copy everything across.
Depending on what volume of material you have to copy this can take several hours to complete. Firewire connections are the quickest I believe. Other types of network connection are slower.
I notice you mention OS9 partition. Intel Macs can't run OS9 (Classic) so any OS9 applications will be useless. Even some OSX applications may need to be updated to run on Leopard.
Hope this is a start for you.

  • Need to copy files from multiple machine to multiple locations on server in daily basis

    My scenario is below:
    1. I have 20 machines and data for backup would be on only in one folder of each machine.
    2. Need to create 20 folders in server and copy the corresponding machine's data to the respective folder daily.
    3. Data copy should be appending (Should not be duplication).
    4. Also need notification if any failure.
Let me know whether schedule task / script which would be better to server this

Create a robocopy script to copy data from 20 different folders,
In Robocopy command you have switches to append the data,
You can enable logging for this script, If its failes / error - it will update in log file.
Create a schedule task and run this script according to your timings,
You an refer Robocopy article for more information :

  • Problems copying files btwn two fire wire drives, after one was reformatted

I have two Lacie Firewire drives, I use a 75GB drive at home for my iTunes music folder. Recently I attempted, without success, to share this over LAN to a new mini using share points. In trobleshooting this at the sharepoints website I discovered that sharepoints will not share a firewire drive unless it is formatted OS Extended. The 75 GB firewire drive was never reformatted from its factory defult format (PC Exchange). I brought a 250GB drive (formatted Mac OS Extended) home from work to use as a temporary home for the iTunes music folder while I reformatted the 75GB drive. I copied the iTunes folder from the 75 GB drive. Made a visual check of the folder on the 250GB drive and it was complete ( all the music files are there).
I reformatted the 75Gb drive to Mac OS Extended. And then tried to copy the folder back. It copied about 5OO MB and then stop with the following error message: "The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "_file name_" could not be read or written. (Error code -36). I checked to see where the copy got to and then checked for the specified file, it was there on the source drive (250GB). I even got it to play with iTunes. But it would not copy. I skipped this file and tried to copy again, but after a short period of success the copy got hung up on another file. Therre appears to be many problem files.
I tried to use iTunes "consolidate libaray" but it hangs up as well.
I called LaCie. Their tech support suggested that I may have some file corruption as a result of copying from a "fat32" fromatted drive, which is what he believes the factory format was, to the Mac OS extended fromat drive. He suggested running another utility to discover any posiible file corruption.
Questions: What are my options on diagnosing this problem? What utilities would best evaluate the condition of the files? Are there ways to fix the files?
Can I remove the library in iTunes, tell it to use the music folder on the 250GB and then rebuild a libarary - will this help or just add another layer of complication to the process?
Is there a way to copy a group of files and skip over any corrupted files? If so can this be done and get a list of skipped files?
If not, do any of the utilites aloow one to identify and isolate bad files in a way that they can be removed from the copying process?
    Thanks for any input.
    450MHz PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hello Again Gordon Bennet!,
The above was the easy fix for your problem which is an I/O issue.
If you want to live on the edge, AFTER making a backup, are you are familiar with with how to use 'Console'? It's in Applications-Utilties-Console.
If so, can you access the logs and see if the sort of read error that has been logged? It is also possible (although improbable) that the OS logged a detailed message elsewhere.
Good luck and even though not "solved" here in the iSight group, you might try your HD question in Computing Hardware and under your MacMini group to see if anyone has better answer/solution.

  • Burnin a large iMovie file onto multiple DVD's.

I have a large iMovie file on my hardrive. I would like to back it up onto a DVD, but it is too large for a 4.7 Ghz DVD. Is there a way to copy the file onto several disks?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

Disk storage is cheap. For a modest amount of money, you can easily buy an external hard drive that's several times the capacity of a DVD, so I suggest you simply back up your movie file to an external hard drive.
If that option doesn't appeal to you can probably use iDVD to divide the movie file up into chapters, then burn the chapters to different different DVD discs.

  • Whats the best way to save large folders/files on multiple dvds?

    hi,
A quick question about the best way to save to dvd(4.7gb disc) a large number of folders/files.I've got about 30-40gb of stuff to save from mp3 sample files through to logic audio files.I already have them saved to another HD but i just want to be extra safe and have another back up.In the past i've just saved it disc by disc creating each folder as i go dragging the appropriate folder across.I was just wondering whether there was an easier way than this.May be an application where i can drag all the files and it will sort and save everything for me much like the way itunes now saves/backups files.
    thanks
    darren

    Hi darrenz,
if you have Toast you can save your stuff using Toast. There's a great option within Toast. You need to select the Data tab and choose "Mac only". Then just drag all the stuff you want to burn to the Toast window and it will automatically ask for another DVD until everything is burnt. After that all your DVDs will have a Toast Restore app on them. It lets you select what you want to restore and will tell you which DVDs to insert. Here's a screenshot I found by googling: http://www.macworld.com/images/content/2005/08/19/toast7restore.jpg
    Have fun!

  • Copying files either very slow or doesn't work at all

I've tried copying files from a DVD to an external drive, and from one external drive to another, and I've been running into troubles on my Mac Pro, namely, I get an error code 36 (corrupted files) and the copying process hangs, requiring me to reboot. However, I was able to copy the files from the DVD to my laptop HD, so I don't think that corrupt files is the problem. After rebooting my Mac Pro, I was able to copy files from one external drive to another, but it was incredibly slow (about 1GB per hour), and I was still unable to copy files from the DVD to an external drive. I've verified all the disks with Disk Utility, and I've repaired disk permissions on my Mac Pro HD but apparently need to re-run since when I verify permissions again, I'm still getting a lot of errors or comments like "Warning: SUID file "usr/bin/rlogin" has been modified and will not be repaired". Scanning my Mac Pro HD for viruses, quite a few files are coming up with the comment "did not have permission to open the file." Other than continuing to repair disk permissions, does anyone have suggestions about what might be causing this and/or on possible next steps?

A little further info - I checked permissions and I have permission to copy the files in question. Also, it seems that most of the errors that pop up when I verify permissions are of the type that can safely be ignored, according to Apple -- I'll go through the list later and cross-check them to make sure that they're all ignore-able, but thats what they appear to be.
