Is it possible to correct extreme fisheye lens distortion?

I am needing to correc extreme lens distortion from fisheye lens. I cannot get acceptable results with filters in PS CC or lightroom. Any suggestions?

Perhaps PTLens plugin.  It was created using Panorama tools that has  support for fish eye lenses that capture circular images..

  • I've done spot healing in my images but want to change lens distortion corrections. Does it matter?

    - I originally corrected all the lens distortion in my images with the default Adobe lens profile for the lens, and also done all the spot healing too. However, I now want to change the lens distortion profile to a profile that i've made instead. The Adobe default lens profile and the one that i have made give different distortion corrections (Adobe's is a bit too strong).
    - Will all the spots chosen in the spot healing still be mapped correctly? i.e will the source points for the spot healing and the area i'm sampling from still be in the correct positions after adjusting for the new lens distortion?
    - Does Lightroom allow for this, or do i have to re-do all the spot healing?

    Hey Paul,
Well, you could just try it to find out . But the answer is: Adobe adjusts spots (and paint, and red-eye...) to accomodate lens corrections. It's one of the reasons it is recommended to leave lens corrections until last if your Lightroom is performance challenged, i.e. it takes some horsepower.. (me? I like having lens corrections done up front, despite the performance hit).

  • How do I correct extreme lens distortion?

How do I correct fisheye extreme lens distortion with PSCC?
    Adobe Creative Cloud

    Image >> Transform >> Perspective
Drag the corner handles at the top out - to correct converging vertcals.
But remember the fish eye effect is meant to be distorted.

  • Lens distortion correction in Premiere CS6?

I'm trying to correct the distortion caused by a wide-angle lens in Premiere CS6. From what I can tell, there is no filter or transform / distort feature within Premiere itself. I followed the steps in this tutorial to open the MPEG4 in Photoshop, apply the lens correction filter, and then export the video again to be re-imported to Premiere. http://podcasts.creativecow.net/adobe-premiere-tutorials-podcast/correcting-lens-distortio n
However this tutorial is for CS5. I am seeing no adjustment or filter layer in my layers panel, as it appears in the tutorial. When I go to export the video, it seems the Adaptive Wide Angle filter or the Lens Correction filter has only applied to a single frame of the whole clip. Bummer.
Any other suggestions for fixing lens distortion in Premiere?
    Thanks!

Both these replies are a bit rude and unhelpful. I am editing in Premiere, and I am not very familiar with it. The question is about how to fix lens distortion in Premiere. Maybe there's a way to do this that I'm not aware of...? That's why I asked the question! There's nothing about it that I could find in the forums. The only fix I found didn't work—which was to use Photoshop *integrated with Premiere*. And two people tell me to use AEFX without pointing me in any directions of how to do that. Useless.
Anyway, I found some information that *was* helpful. This tutorial demonstrates that one critical step was missing from the prior tutorial, which is to convert the video layer to a smart object before applying the effect:
    http://www.protechreviewgroup.com/tutorialsinformation/tutorial-fisheye-correction-in-phot oshop-for-gopro-hero-hd/
The same person provided a tutorial on how to do this in AEFX:
    http://www.protechreviewgroup.com/tutorialsinformation/tutorial-fisheye-lens-correction-in -after-effects-for-gopro-hero-hd/
Now that these steps are taken, I have to take the footage back into Premiere. It's a workflow question. Other video editing software has this kind of stuff built-in to the effects panel.

  • How can i add the Sigma 10mm 2.8 Fisheye lens profile from the camera profile in windows to lightroom 5?

It only seems to give me a 15mm fisheye option for Sigma and not the 10mm even though it is a profile in the camera profiles folder.
Can anyone help with importing this profile into Lightroom?

Just so it is black and white for my sake. I am shooting with a Nikon D7100 using a Sigma Fisheye 10mm 2.8 and using the Lens Profile of the Sigma 15mm 2.8mm on Lightroom.
Then the correct profile to use is the Sigma 10mm F2.8 if you want proper Vignetting correction and matching Distortion correction, but you'll need to shoot camera raw images (i.e. no JPEG lens profile). This is also why you are only seeing partial correction. As I said, "With a crop factor camera only the central crop area of the full-frame Sigma 15mm lens profile will be applied."
That said there is absolutely nothing wrong with using the Sigma 15mm lens profile with your crop factor Nikon D7100 if you are happy with the partial correction results, but you can also do this using the correct Sigma 10mm lens profile (set less than 100). There is a fisheye correction plugin called Fisheye-Hemi that works very similar in that it only applies partial correction. You're getting about the same results as Fisheye-Hemi for free using partial correction with the LR lens profile tool. That should make you happy! I suggest experimenting with both the 15mm and 10mm lens profiles and start shooting camera raw image files. Your're not realizing the camera's full capability shooting JPEGs!
In the DSC_7098 images posted none of them look very sharp (slow shutter speed?). Other than geometric correction I can't judge the posted images for "sharpness" in the corrected areas, which is the major concern. The biggest issue with rectilinear correction of fisheye images is loss of detail in areas with the most correction (edges and corners).  If that were not the case people would use fisheye lenses for ALL wide-angle images and simply correct them inside LR. Sadly that's not the case and using LR's Lens Profile Distortion and other transform tools to correct fisheye images considerably softens the corrected areas (sides and corners).
Fisheye geometric distortion with some subjects is almost undetectable. So how much correction you need will vary by subject type and what the end use for the image. Any fisheye image that has correction applied will lose sharpness in the corrected areas, which may be fine for most purposes other than large prints. So it's best not to strive for 100% rectilinear correction–Just the correction needed to make the image look better.
    Canon 8-15mm F4L FE on 5D MKII Full-Frame @ 15mm (No correction)
Looks good to me with no correction!
For more flexibility and better results PS's Wide Angle Adaptive filter and content aware fill tools will retain more image detail in the corrected areas. Here's the same lens and camera with an image processed in PS:
    15mm Full-Frame Fisheye
LR Distortion = 50 (partial)                PS Adaptive Wide Angle Filter + Content Aware Fill
The corner image detail is about the same in both of the above images at 1:1 view. Partial LR Distortion correction is good!
So what happens if I apply 100 Distortion correction to the image inside LR?
    1:1 Compare View (lower-left) with LR Distortion = 100
100% LR Distortion correction of fisheye images is NOT good IMHO!

  • Hi, does anybody know how to merge photos in photoshop that were shot with fisheye lens?

There is a function "photo merge" through Bridge, it does good job with regular photos. However this function does not work when I try to merge images that are shot with fish-eye lens, since the images have exaggerated angles and dark vignette on the corners. I asked to support center, they have not answered. I found other software that does   work for my purpose, but I wanted find out if photoshop has function for the type of work I am looking for. Thanks.

    hi Chris,
It seems that Photoshop 5.0 does better photomerge with ordinary lens images.
When we merge regular photos, for instance to make 360 panoramic of the room interior, we photographed 36+1 images rotating camera every 10 degree... and more images result better for seamless photomerge. When I process 12+1 images (30 degree rotating), photomerge becomes into sections, not as one seamless piece, so I figured more overlappings give better reference points for photoshop to make perfect photomerge. And Yes, it does perfect seamless merge into one photo. However it takes long time, over 45 minutes to process 37 images into one room panoramic interior. So, our client has 80 rooms to photograph, then 80 x 37 shots, + processing time for photo merge became my concern.
Then, I used fisheye lens to photograph the interior and it reduces into no more than 8 images. Besides when they are correctly merged, it gives better panoramic effect when I plug into a different software.  However, the function of photomerge in photoshop 5.0 does not work well with these exaggerated corners with high vignettes. It seems not finding the enough reference points to stitch together.  It never make seamless one image, rather it merges into two-three sections. So I need to manually stitch them together, which is not efficient solution for 80 different interiors.
Please let me know how you did your crazy fisheye lens shot merged in photoshop, that requires no manual stitch, cuz I need to eventually process the multiples.  I found the program PTGui and it does good job, but I wanted make sure if photoshop handles the fisheye lensed shots better or the same, before we purchase PTGui program.
I asked to adobe photoshop helpline, and I emailed images with my concerns but never got any reply yet. it has been a week. So it will be great if you could give me a tip.  Thank you so much, Chris.

  • Adobe Premiere Elements plugin for fisheye/barrel distortion correction

I want to correct the fisheye/barrel lens distortion in a GoPro MP4 video recording. Can Adobe Premiere Elements do this (I've searched for such a function in my APE 11 without success) or is there a plugin which will do this and which is compatible with APE 11 ?

That is good news, and for $49, sounds like a deal. ProDAD does some nice applications and plug-ins, but I had not heard of that one - learned something new.
I was going to mention Alien Skin (also do some neat plug-ins), as they have/had a similar "lens distortion" module in their lineup. However, I did not see PrE listed as a host application, so held off. Most of their plug-ins work in Photoshop, Premiere Pro and After Effects. We see similar with plug-ins from Red Giant and Boris, where PrE is not a viable host app. Not sure why not, but it must be in the numbers - both user-bases and $, as Boris & RG plug-ins often cost 3x what PrE does.
It's also great that the ProDAD plug-in offers some stabilization - probably a bit of their Mecalli stabilizer is built-in - you get a "twofer!"
Thanks for that info, and happy editing,

  • Perspective correction and Lens distortion removal tools

    Hi,
as a photographer who aspires to create pictures with best possible quality available to me I am very bothered that my primary image editing tool is lacking Perspective correction and Lens distortion removal tools. I believe that there should be no questions if such tools are necessity or so to speak additional enhancements. It is eating the disk space as well having multiple copies clutters the projects if these functions are available only via plug-ins or additional external tools.
How are you guys handling such issues?
For a moment I was thinking to convert all the files through Nikon Capture NX2 before importing to Aperture but that again is counter effective in long run. Aperture is built to work with Raw files and large tif files take longer to process between various programs and I would loose all the benefits of having Raw file at all.

It would be nice to have those functions added to the next version.
I always use the following page to select the product I want to provide feedback on:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
Note - due to the number of lenses and cameras, this would be a huge task and the end result may not include a lot of older lenses which really need the correction.
I use PT Lens as a plug-in inside of Aperture for the most part (although I do have PS CS5 and DxO Pro 6 for situations where I want something different).
As you said, the downside is that you end up with a TIFF (from inside Aperture) or a processed file needing to be import into Aperture.

  • Lens distortion corrections in Camera Raw?

Chromatic  aberration, lens vignetting, post crop vignetting
    are possible in  Camera Raw.
Why not have access to lens  distortion corrections in CR?

Maybe show us a screenshot of what you see on the system that isn't want you expect.   What version of ACR are you using in each?  It should be visible in the title bar of the ACR plug-in if you unmaximize it, or you can do About Plug-ins / Camera Raw in PS.
Here is the Manual tab of ACR 6.7 on Windows in CS5:

Im actually tilting it up where it cinnects to my iPod, not where it connects to my computer, and i have tried three(yes, 3) different cables, one of which i bought brand new. still nothing, and i've also tried different USB ports on my computer,....nothing. Could this simply be a hardware failure of somekind? maybe a physical problem...i mean, why would i have to tilt the cable in order for my computer to actually read my iPod? im looking at the USB connector on my iPod (maybe it's my imagination, not sure) it possible might be bent, the little metal part in the port.

  • Is it possible to correct a typo in the menu?

There's a typo in the text of the menu of a DVD that I created in iDVD. Is it possible to correct this error without redoing the project? An idea that I have in mind would be to make a "dummy" DVD that has the correct menu, copy both DVD's to my hard disk, mix some of the files from one of the DVD's with files from the other DVD, then finally burn this mixture. There are all these VOB files, etc. The question is which (if any) of them corresponds to the menu.
    G5 + Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.8)

Sorry but that won't work. Your video, titles and all, are now one big long MPEG-2 files. There is no way to repair certain parts of a project by editing or moving around the video DVD files.
You have to fix it in iMovie and reburn it in iDVD. Or live with it.

I made an error asking to receive Windows product of Adobe Element 13 and Premiere while I needed the Mac Version.  How is it possible to correct this error ? and what do I have to do if you accept ?

Normally an Elements license is valid for both Windows and Mac systems.  So you might only need to download the Mac versions of the applications and use your serial number to activate them.

  • How do I correct lens distortion with elements 13 software?

How do I correct lens distortion with Photoshop elements 13.

thanks for the suggestion....i've also found the error msg on restart about device......seems one of the external harddrives is either failing or has failed....am running tech tool on that and all blocks seem to be bad...will try a data recovery from data rescue and then see if i can repartition it. I've found that the reinstall of office 2004 was different this time....asked for serial number again (didn't last time) and that might be it. If it wasn't completely removed there might have been remnants left over......cross my fingers.

  • Digital Camera RAW Update 5.02 breaks Sony RX100 lens distortion correction (AGAIN!)

Just like with the Digital Camera RAW Update 4.08, the latest 5.02 update breaks the Sony RX100 lens distortion correction again. I'm reverted back to 5.01 until this is fixed.
From your Time Machine backup, restore the previous versions of
    /System/Library/CoreServices/RawCamera.bundle
    /System/Library/CoreServices/RawCameraSupport.bundle

Yes, I noticed it too, but I wasn't certain it was 5.02 that did it as I sold my RX100 and haven't processes any files for a while. Then as part of the NR discussion here I looked at some old RX100 files, and the distortion correction now disappears. Unfortunately I can't really revert to 5.01 because I was waiting on the A7 support 5.02 brought.
Apple are aware of it, so hopefully the fix will be quick to arrive.

    Probably.
Apple does not do this, nor do they sell the parts.
