Is it possible to create a "virtual" copy of an object in illustrator?

In other words, lets say that I've got an object (that might be a simple object like a square, or a complicated group, or anything).
I can select the object, copy it and then paste it at some other location, but now it is a separate object.
What I'd like to do is make a "virtual" copy of the object, so that if any modifications are done to one of the copies, they are also done to the other copy. I.e., if I change the color of one sub-object in one of the virtual copies, the color also changes in the corresponding sub-object of the other virtual copy.
Note that this is similar to lightrooms virtual copy feature of images, but in that case, the modifications are separate even though the underlying image stayes the same. What I'm asking about here is for the ability to "link" objects together.
BTW, the basic reason I want this is for the following reason: I want to have an object occur in more than one artboard, but if I modify the object in one artboard, I'd like it to also be modified in the second artboard. It is not feasible to have the artboards overlap over *just* the object that I need (as that would in some sense solve the problem, and in fact does solve the problem in some limited circumstances, but not all of them, namely those where the two arboards need to have other also objects along with the common object that do not overlap).
thanks!

Just an addition, jb (unless this has changed in the latest version(s)):
If you want the option to position/align them by anything but the centre of the appearance (including effetcs), you may add a nostroke/nofill rectange/circle centred over the centre of the artwork and extending past its appearance in all directions.

  • How can you create a virtual copy in a Lightroom plugin?

I looked over the Lightroom SDK and did not see any documentation on creating a virtual copy. Is there an undocumented API for this?
If not, is there a plan to add this into the SDK?

    Hi Matt,
Yeah, I have some good news and some bad news:
    - Good news: Keyboard stuffing (as implemented in the elare framework) works equally well on both platforms, provided the appropriate keystroke exists on both platforms.
(Mac version uses applescript, Windows uses autohotkey - both assure Lightroom is the target) - Note: @2011-07-30, I haven't actually tested this particular function on Mac - but I've tested other similar functions on both platforms.
    - Bad news: It doesn't always work on either platform, since keystrokes may be usurped by open dialog boxes and open text fields in Lightroom...
    - Good news: failure is 100% detectable.
    Bottom line:
If the kludgy nature of this solution would be more bad than good for you and/or your users, then this is not a viable solution.
If your users would prefer the caveats in order to be able to get the job, then this solution will work well enough for now.
PS - I'm presently using it in ChangeManager and its a godsend for me. Since I understand the limitations, my failure rate is appx. 0%.

  • Is it possible to create a virtual TCP port and send data to it?

Is it possible to create a virtual TCP port and send data to it?
My application is this:   I am reading a constant stream of waveform data from a device via a LabVIEW VI set and I need to get that streaming data to a .NET application.  I can poll a TCP port in .NET easily so is there a way I can create a virtual TCP port in LabVIEW and send the data there?

Have a look at the example called simple data server and simple data client and see what you can get from that. I'm not really familiar with TCP myself.

  • I have Lightroom version 4.3, Can not activate -Simulate Paper & Ink, have created a virtual Copy

I have Lightroom 4.3, but can not activate Simulate Paper & Ink, have created a virtual copy and checked softproofing

I can't reproduce this problem. It works fine here.
This problem could be due to a corrupt Preference File. This file can go "funny" and is then responsible for all kinds of strange behavior of Lr. The remedy is replacing the Preference File.
BTW: Re-installing Lr ddoes not replace the Pref. File since it is designed to "survive" upgrades.

  • How do you remember why you created a virtual copy?

Virtual copies are really usefull but I'm already starting to struggle to remember why I created them (is this a senior moment...)
I look in a folder where I've created various virtual copies for different crop sizes, exposures, toning etc. The trouble is this isn't always obvous and I find myself having to look at each image it turn and working out why it's here.
Just wondered if anyone has the same problem and have any suggestions for solving it. I'm currently thinking of using a metadata field - perhaps job title?

In Metadata you could note something under Workflow.

  • Is it possible to creat a virtual DAQ?

    Hi,
I am doing a project which requires using 2 existing softwares:
+ Software A was written to produce 3 analog outputs and it supports the analog output board ACL 6126.
+ Software B was written to receive the 3 analog outputs produced by software A and analyse them. It supports the card LabPC+.
Obviously, the 2 softwares can be installed in the same PC.
Is there a way to feed the outputs of software A to software B without actually using the I/O boards?
A restriction is that I am not allowed to do any modification on software A.
    Thanks

    Totti,
I don't think it would be possible. Here are my reasons:
You can think of both software A and B as virtual instruments that interact with the user and output/input information (signals) through the I/O boards. These virtual instruments are made up of layers that may include:
    - The application itself (software A or B)
    - The driver for the I/O board that they use
    - The Hardware Abstraction Layer of the OS
    - The I/O board itself.
If you want to pass the information from software A to B without using the I/O boards then you must find a way to "intercept the data" without using the I/O boards. You probably cannot do this because:
    - You cannot modify software A
    - Software A will probably not work correctly if the hardware is not present. Even if
it did it would be almost impossible to know how to extract the data out of the driver or OS layers.
This is a pretty general view of the systems you are describing. I hope it helps by shedding some light on the way these things work and why I don't think you can do the desired task.
    I hope this helps,

  • It's creating a virtual copy of my external drive on my internal drive

    Hello,
I have a problem I've never had, and I can't seem to find here with the search terms I'm using. Hopefully someone can help on this thread.
    What happened:
At some point my MacBook Pro decided to create another version of the external drives, but on the internal drive. So there is folder in /Volumes named exactly
as my external and now the external drive shows in /Volumes as "name 1".
    My Drives:
drive_scoure: Lacie external connected direct to MacBook Pro, a backup for drive_frank.
drive_krate: Lacie external daisy chained through the CalDigit drive. This is my Time Machine drive.
drive_frank: CalDigit Firewire VR connected direct to MacBook Pro, holding 300gigs of photos.
So on my desktop I had each of these drives with their respective icons. Then at some point I plugged them in and, while they show up normally, and even their names look the same. But looking at them in the Terminal the folders and drives show up like:
    /Volumes:
    drive_frank
    drive_frank 1
drive_frank has now become a folder within /Volumes. drive_frank 1 is how the external drive is now named (but on the desktop it is labeled as drive_frank)
A couple months later it happened again with drive_scoure. Showing up in /Volumes as drive_scoure and drive_scoure 1. drive_scoure 1 being the actual external drive.
So now the files meant for drive_scoure end up on my internal MacBook Pro drive. Since the labels didn't change on the desktop I didn't notice until I ran out of space.
So how can I fix this and keep it from happening again?

enter commandshiftg in finder and in the resulting popup enter /Volumes
this will open /Volumes in a finder window. that folder contains all the mount points for all your hard drives. regular ones will look like aliases. the fake one will look like a regular folder. delete it and empty trash. if there is something inside you need copy it somewhere else first.
this sometimes happens when a drive is unmounted improperly. there is no real cure to prevent it.

  • Is it possible to create the memory for a Java object in C/C++?

Is it possible to have a C/C++ program allocate some memory, then have JNI use that memory for primitive java objects (such an array of bytes) that are passed to Java objects ?
I would like to allocate a region of memory in C++, then give that memory to a Java object (via some kind of JNI type) and have that Java object fill the memory region with data.
My impression from reading the JNI API and the few examples I've looked at is "No", there is a strict boundary between C++ and JNI as regards memory management. There may be serious implications as to why what I'm suggesting is not feasible, I am not enough of a JNI expert to know yet, and would greatly appreciate any input/comment.
    Many thanks,
    Colm.

No, you cannot. However, writing your JNI code you should not use memory of Local Heap (if it possible). Because Local Heap Memory used also by JVM. I have developed tools that generate C++ wrappers for JNI code. In these wrappers I use mainly Global/Virtual Memory. I also reduce to minimum creation of local/global references, as it is affects to JVM memory use. If you are writing JNI code under MS Windows then you can try my tools that automate JNI code writing:

  • Flickr and Virtual Copy Problem..

I have photos uploaded to flickr through lightroom but if i create a virtual copy of a used image flickr gets confused because the filename remains the same and wants to update my image with an edit i prefer to keep separate.
Without creating a tiff or jpg of the original RAW file is there a way to avoid this?
Would love to be able to rename virtual copies but it's not possible right?
    any solutions?
    S

    Thanks Sean..
Actually it did work but on the flickr side, i didn't notice until i logged on..  The Flickr side added a '2' to the virtual copy although Lightroom uses the original name/copy.  So i guess it works, just a little confusing.  I have not tweaked the virtual copy yet to see if it updates the '2' copy on Flickr or throws a wobbly instead
I used Jeffrey's plugin for sometime but eventually I decided to delete all my photos from flickr (new account anyway) and decided to go fresh with LR 3.  It works really well and any tweak i make get's republished without deleting any previous comments or data.  Jeffrey's just doesn't have that same visual impact and integration.  The LR version has a few quirks but seems stable enough for solid use...  Just need to be smart with it because pilot error can make problems.

  • LR 5 fails to export virtual copy to file

I edited several files in Photoshop CC and upon completion were added to my LR5 catalog as expected. I created a virtual copy of each and changed the crop (only). LR5 stalls and fails to complete when trying to export these files (I wanted a PSD) to a folder. I tried writing the metadata to the file and got the same result. I can export to a new catalog (which is what I ended up doing) but just really needed a file.
This proces worked fine in LR4.4/CS6 (I double checked on a different computer this AM)
The LR5 catalog is an upgrade to my LR4 catalog, hopefully it has the same settings.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

I get exactly the same error message as Zac in the original post. Just like him I also have optimized and tested integrity of my 200 000-images-catalog in LR 4.4 where it is running fine. Have tried to convert my catalog on two different machines running on Win 7 and Win 8.
Export to catalog don't either do the trick. I do manage to perform a partial catalog export of my images from the last year and upgrade this to LR 5 as John suggests, but I'm not really keen on searching for a single possibly troublesome folder, wherever that now may be...
It looks like some others have similar problems:

  • Changing Virtual Copy Names in Web Gallery

I have been creating web galleries in LR for clients for purposes of online editing. This hasn't been a problem until today when I was creating multiple copies of images using Virtual Copy. I realized when I create a web gallery the images with multiple versions all have the same name in the gallery. So there might be 3 versions of one image (a color, a BW, a sepia tone for example) with the same name.
I.e., if I have an image called "001.cr2" that is full frame and then I create a virtual copy that is cropped, in the web gallery they are both called "001.CR2" instead of "001_01.CR2", or some such thing.
I need some way for my client to differentiate btwn the two files during their online editing. Is there a way to do this without exporting the files and then re-importing to create the gallery?
    Thanks in advance.
    Ryan Donnell

When you create the virtual copies specify unique copy names for them in the metadata, e.g., "bw", "sepia", etc.
Then in the Web module in the Image Info panel, edit the title and/or caption fields to include the copy name as part of the filename or caption. Each image in the web gallery will then have a unique name tag to reference. If you don't want to use copy names (why not, they sure are useful for other things as well), Image # would also work.

  • Virtual Copy problem in Collections

Sometimes, but not always, when I create a Virtual Copy in a Collection, the Virtual Copy will not appear in the Collection, but it will appear next to the file in its folder.

I have not seen that. When I create a virtual copy including a soft proof copy in a collection, so far they have all appeared. Of course, if I make a virtual copy in a folder, it will not show up in a collection unless I put it there. iMac, OS 10.6.8.
