Is it possible to create rules in Mail outside of Preferences?

Having used Mail/Preferences/Rules as the route to create new rules for messages in Mail, I have often thought that there may well be a simpler method which I have not yet discovered, to create new rules (as opposed to applying them) by highlighting the message in the inbox (or whichever mailbox you happen to be using) and creating the rule directly without having to mess around going through the Prefs routine. Anybody found a shortcut?

Thanks for your helpful suggestion andyBall_uk.
I've had a quick look at the second link you included (
http://www.andreasamann.com/MacOSX/Mail_Scripts)but the developer seems to have stopped updated the scripts since Mountain Lion, so I probably won't tangle with one of those as I use 10.8.3.
However I'm going to trial MailActOn and see how I get on. I'll update once I have had a play.
Thanks again - always grateful for constructive replies.

  • Creating rules for Mail - yet visible on iPhone

I fully understand how to create rules for email so that when receiving them, they automatically go into folders.  The problem is, if I receive an email that automatically gets sorted into a folder, I can not tell on my iPhone I have actually received a new email.
However, I need to know how to have rules to automatically sort/file emails into a folder, but still know I have received a new email on my iPhone mail.
    Anyone got ideas?
    Thanks

I can understand not wanting to put out money to gain a feature that you think should be standard.
Here is a link to some Applescripts that I had downloaded in the past. I actually forgot about these. There is a script which will allow you to apply some rules to outgoing messages, but the author of the scripts notes that it is not a perfect solution. Maybe it can help.
If all else fails, maybe you can use smart folders as a sort of go between. Instead of scanning through the sent mail folder and hand picking individual messages to drag to folders, why not set up a smart folder to aggregate all like mail. Then you could just drag the messages from a smart folder to a regular one. It might help speed things up.
I am just about out of ideas. I hope you can come up with a good solution.

  • Bug creating Rules in Mail

In the Rules window, I can't select : "if any of these conditions are", so, do this, bla bla bla
I can only have "if all conditions are"...
I think that this is a bug. does anyone know how to solve this issue, or modify the rule with the terminal, or anythink else ???

I don’t understand. What prevents you from choosing [any] instead of [all]?
BTW, if you’re using Mac OS X 10.3, as your profile indicates, it would have been more appropriate to discuss this in the Mail & Address Book - Mac OS X 10.3 & earlier forum. If the discussion applies to both Mail 1.x and Mail 2.x, it doesn’t really matter, but it’s difficult to know that in advance.

Martin, it's possible to create shortcuts for any menu item in any OS X application. You do this by going to the System Preferences, in the Keyboard and Mouse pane, under the Keyboard Shortcuts tab. See this posting for more details.
This is an extremely powerful feature of OS X, and it is unfortunate that is it not better known.

  • Creating rules - possible from within an email?  what do diff options mean?

In previous email programs I've used (Eudora, Outlook), it is possible to create a rule while you're in a specific email, to direct it to a mailbox you've already set up. Is this possible in Mail, or are rules only created from within the Preferences dialog (a lousy choice)?
Also, can someone direct me to a list of definitions for each of the various options in the Rules dialog? My rules aren't working right, and I'm sure it's because I'm misunderstanding the subtle differences between the From/To/Any Recipient/Account/etc options.
    Thanks!

To create a rule you have to go through Preferences/Rules. But as you set up a rule any appropriate values from the currently seelected email will be prefilled. So if you receive an email from me, and as you look at it you decide you don't want to see any more from me, you pull up the Rules dialog, click on Add Rule, and you will see that the From option has my email address filled in for you. If you change the filter option from From to Subject, the subject of my email will be filled in.
I don't know of any document that outlines the different options - have you looked at help? (This is not a smart answer, my mail help isn't working and I'm afraid I haven't bothered to fix it.) For the specific cases you mention:
From: the email address that shows in the From column in the mail list
To: is not necessarily you. It might for example be the name of a mail list, or it might be that the sender has included you as a CC or BCC, and so your name does not appear in the To:
Any Recipient: recipients (people this mail is delivered to) may be listed in the To: section, the CC: section, or the BCC: section. If you get a lot of mail that you want to filter, and a common feature is that Tom Jones always appears in one of these, but not the same one, then use Any rather than the specific recipient choices
Account: I have 5 or 6 different email accounts. I might want to treat differently mail from Tom Jones to me at one of those accounts from mail to me at another of those accounts.
If you want to post some problematic rules, with what is happening and what you had expected would happen, maybe someone can help.
Incoming mail is tested agains the rules in sequence, and triggering a rule does not necessarily stop the mail being tested against subsequent rules. It is often a good idea to consider whether the last action on a rule should be "stop evaluating rules".

  • Create a rule on mail delivery failure

    Hello,
Is it possible to create a rule in the Groupwise client, that when a message bounce back (mail delivery failure) from our relay provider, that the email will be forwarded to an internal recipient.
At the moment I cant get it to work. Moving that bounced email to a folder in Groupwise does work.

  • Is it possible to create a rule across 2 models?

Is it possible to create a rule across 2 models? I added Jack as a creator of an articles in articles model and then I added a row to make creator a subclass of person. So now I'm trying to query across 2 models. I was trying the following query. Give me the grandfather of the author of the article with the title ERNIEX
    SELECT m grandfater, c creator, t title
    FROM TABLE(SDO_RDF_MATCH(
    '(?t :title "ERNIEX") (?m fam:grandParentOf ?c)',
    SDO_RDF_Models('articles2', 'family'),
    SDO_RDF_Rulebases('RDFS', 'family_rb'),
    SDO_RDF_Aliases(SDO_RDF_Alias('','http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/'), SDO_RDF_Alias('fam','http://www.example.org/family/')),
    null));
When I run the query about I get the error
ORA-20000: We do not have a valid rules index for this Model-Rulebase combination
So I thought to create a index but I'm not sure how. I tired the following code but I think I'm doing something wrong. Can anyone point me in the right direction. Or for that matter does anyone know of a more extensive tutorial to using the database? Thanks
    BEGIN
    SDO_RDF_INFERENCE.CREATE_RULES_INDEX(
    'rdfs_rix_articles2_faily',
    SDO_RDF_Models('family', 'articles2'),
    SDO_RDF_Rulebases('RDFS','family_rb')
    END;
    Ernest Lim

You are right, a rules index would have to be created for the rulebases and both the models you use in the query. The example in the rules index creation you have shown at the end of your post does exactly that - creates a rules index for the set of rulebases and models: RDFS, family_rb, family, articles2. Once that rules index is created you should be able to run the query without getting the error.
Did you get an error while trying to create a rules index using the code shown in your post?

  • How do I create a rule in mail that only applies to flagged messages?

I would like to create a rule in mail that would delete messages of a certain age, but I need to keep some messages safe. I would like to be able to flag these or put them in a mailbox and have a rule making messages with those flags or mailboxes safe from being deleted. Is that something I can do? Thanks!

You can create a local mailbox and move the messages you want to keep there. I don't see any kind to rule you can make to move a flagged message, so you would probably have to do it manually, unless you can use other criteria to identify messages you wish to keep.
If you're using the server settings in mail to determine the age before deletion, the local mailboxes would be safe from that deletion. You can set to store messages on server for up to 30 days before deletion. This will work for IMAP accounts, but don't apply to the inbox. Just to the other main mailboxes such as Sent, Trash, etc.
If you create a rule to delete messages after a certain age (outside of what the servers would do automatically), I think it would only work on the inbox if at all, but not sure. If it were applied through all, it would delete them from the local folders also.
You can create a smart mailbox and input certain criteria such as flagged, age. You could exclude any mailbox that you don't want to include, such as local folders, by adding that to part of the criteria. You would have to delete the messages manually as they accumulate. This would be useful when you save a lot of mail, but say you only want to keep messages less than a year old. This would help you instantly see messages that meet your deletion criteria without having to manually check messages for age.

  • Apple Mail - Creating rules - Unable to drag-reorder rules as stated in 'Help'

I'm trying to create a Rule in Mail that will 'forward' all messages sent one of my Accounts to another (external) Account which is on another computer. Once the email has been transferred from my iMac to the external Account, I want the message on my original iMac to be sent to the Trash.
Having created the rule for the account in question, I find in the Rules Editor the 'Send to Trash' rule comes above (before) the 'Forward To:' rule.  So the Move to Trash rule gets executed before the 'Forward' rule. So the recepient has no idea that the info has been released.
I don't know why it does this. I create the rule to operate the other way around (I'm not daft), but it just does this.
The Online Help says, inter alia -
"If you have multiple rules, they’re applied in the order in which they appear in the list of rules. Drag a rule up or down in the list to change its order."
Despite how obvious that sounds (or however many times I have tried), I have found no way to re-order the rules in Mail by simply dragging a rule from one position to another as stated above. All I can do is delete each rule and re-enter hoping the relative positions get altered.
Is this a bug?  If so, where does one report it? Does someone have an actual solution for this?

Hi Barney. Thank you for your reply.
I think you may be correct. Perhaps it might have helped if I had attached this pic last time -
    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/11373233/MacDiscussions/Mail%20related/Scree n%20Shot%202013-07-29%20at%2016.50.36.png
I read the instructions as sending messages to the Trash before executing the forwarding instruction.  Which seemed to be a bit of a non sequiteur. Anyway, it did work - after a fashion.  In my daughters account there were 10 to 20 messages to be forwarded.  She got sent over 200 from mine, and my wife's account too for some reason. So it seems I'm going to need to do some further reading on this subject.
Incidentally, I very recently managed to reverse the two actions by simply deleting the first one then re-doing it. Didn't work last week when I tried it, kept be generated in the same order - but it did just now.  Weird.
    Anyway, thanks again.

We have a requirement where the customer would like an additional email notification in the RFx process which is not available in the E-Sourcing system.
What they want to do is send an email to Vendors who did not get awarded in the RFx Process and let them know.
Is it possible to create a custom email notification in any way, perhaps using the javax.mail classes?
    import javax.mail.*;
    import javax.mail.internet.*;
If anyone has prior experience with this, please let me know. I would appreciate pointers on this.
    Thanks & Regards,

    Hi Thashin,
I understand you have done custom jar email notification for Transnet. I need to do this now for another component, Task Escalation. please contact me regarding correct way to do this. I have developed the custom java code to access Task info. What I need to know is that, does e-sourcing use its own queing mechanism to send out emails, if so what packages in IAPI does this use, or does it use normal java mail api to send out mails?
    Assistance will be highly appreciated.

  • Creating rules like Outlook in Mail running in Lion

    Hi,
I am on Mac OS X Lion and have configured the new "Mail". I use Outlook in office and find the rules that we can create in Outlook very handy. So was wondering if the same could be achieved in "Mail". The basic requirement is to guide emails from specific email ids into specific folders just to get that neat look for the inbox. Pointers will be very much appreciated.

Thanks for your reply. Now i can create rules but the followup question is how do I get them applied as soon as they are created. Although I say "Apply" once the rule is created, it does not seem to pull anything into the desired folder and just doesn't seem to get applied .

  • Possibility of creating Settlement Rule in Background?

    Hi Gurus,
When I am doing TECO of the Maintenance Order everytime I have to create Settlement Rule.
My settlement receiver Category (Cost Center) and Cost Center are fixed for  Order Type.
Is it possible to create Settlement rule in the background while doing TECO of the Order.
Please suggest if any User Exit is there.
    With best regards,
    Narendra

    Narendra,
We are looking at exactly the same issue.
As you are aware, you can only default one cost centre via the equip/floc...
The only way we can see to have a pre-defined cost centre by order type/plant is to use user-exit [IWO10027|http://pjatkin.users.btopenworld.com/documents/PMCSUserExits.pdf] (default settlement rules).

  • Is it possible to create a customized TV schedule and have it e-mailed to oneself

I don't subscribe all channels, of course, but I do have 3-month access
    to some movie channels.
Is it possible to create a sort of customized daily grid (program guide) of the premium channels to which I have
access by specifying the channels and have it e-mailed to me daily?
(As far as I know Verizon doesn't publish a program guide)

I am not aware of any capability to do what you want. Interesting idea though.....
What I do when they have a free preview of some channels is put them into Favorites 2 on the STB; since I don't normally use a Favorites 2, when I want to watch one of those channels, or surf them, all I have to do is switch the Guide to display Favorites 2 and take a look. And when the free preview is over, it only takes a few button pushes to go into the Menu on the STB and delete the entire contents of Favorites 2.
Not what you asked for, but if you don't normally use your Favorites 2 for anything it might help a little.

Hello. I have created a Rule for mail. I get quite a few spam emails with the "Mail Attachment" attached. Its not working:

Then under the content rule defined for http traffic, you add the following line:
    primarySorryServer
Regarding the config you provided, what you show is a 'show service ' and we can clearly see that even if your 2 services have different name, they are identical.
I believe you would want to configure different keepalive.
    ie: for HTTP
    keepalive port 80
    keepalive type http
    keepalive uri "/"
    for rtsp
    keepalive port 554
