This would be a good time to learn about styles, and if this is a class project they should have covered styles in your class.
The built-in TOC feature depends on paragraph styles. Without them you'll be stuck making the TOC manually (though you can use cross-refernces to keep it up to date, but that's an even more advanced concept than styles).

  • IBooks Author table of contents does recognize paragraph styles

    The video
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2p08-NmqfQ
shows that using iBooks Author  I should be able to have text that is formatted with specific Paragraph Styles show automatically in the Table of Contents. But for me that does not work.  My version of ibooksAuthor is version 2.1.1 ( the latest) , under OS 10.9.1 (the latest) on an iMac.
The video shows the Inspector for TOC as a separate window and shows explicitly, under Sections, the items Copyright, Dedication, Foreword, Section and Section Text. It also has two Paragraph styles listed, Heading 1 and Heading 2.
This set of TOC entries is  available for me with templates from Landscape with Portrait but NOT with templates of Portrait. The templates available for Portrait do not  list, in the TOC Inspector, Heading 1 or Heading 2.
Furthermore, the Portrait templates do NOT allow me to add any Paragraph style to the list (the control for adding Paragraph Styles to the list is grayed out), although the Landscape templates DO allow me to add any Paragraph style.
However, when, with a Landscape template (e.g. Basic) I format text as one of the paragraph styles Header 1, Header 2, Chapter, Section, it does NOT automatically show up in the TOC, though if I add a new section it does automatically show up. The TOC only lists Chapter and Section if these have been added from the menu bar.
When I use a Portrait template  (e.g. Basic or any other) and format text as one of the Paragraph Styles Chapter or Section that  text does not show up in the TOC. And the control for adding Paragraph Styles to the list is grayed out: I cannot add Header 1 or Header 2. The TOC only lists Chapter and Section if these have been added from the menu bar.
No matter what template I use, if I assign a paragraph style to some text, it does not show up in the TOC. And with Portrait templates, which is what I want to use,  I cannot adde any paragraph styles to the TOC Inspector in Portrait templates.

The iBA Help has info on: table of contents
    Which includes:
Each book comes with a table of contents that is updated automatically. You can view the table of contents at any time by selecting Table of Contents in the sidebar. The table of contents includes a default set of items, but you can change which items appear. A table of contents can include:
Chapter and section titles: All chapter and section titles are included in the table of contents by default. If you remove a section from the table of contents, all other sections that use the same layout are removed as well.
Text that uses specified paragraph styles: By default, the table of contents includes all paragraphs in the book that use the Heading 1 and Heading 2 style, but you can include whichever styles you like. Paragraph styles appear in the table of contents only in portrait orientation. See Format text using styles.
The way the table of contents looks depends on the current page orientation. In landscape orientation (shown below), each chapter has its own contents page, with navigation buttons at the bottom. In portrait orientation, the entire book’s table of contents is visible as an expandable list.
Add or remove items in the table of contents
If the Document inspector isn’t open, click Inspector in the toolbar and click the Document Inspector button.
    Click the TOC button.
Do either or both of the following:
To add an item: Click the Add pop-up menu , choose Add Paragraph Style, and choose an option from the submenu.
To remove an item: Select the item you want to remove and click the Delete button .

  • How do I create a table of contents with a nested style paragraph?

I'm having difficulty figuring out how to generate my Table of Contents with a nested style. In this screen shot, "SPECIAL EVENTS" is considered level one and the pink circled "Fittest Firm Challenge" is level 2. Because it is a nested style, it is picking up the entire paragraph. I don't want to put in a paragraph break because that would add too much space in the magazine since there are a lot of other listings like this. I've tried reading through other people's discussions but I'm totally lost with the explanations. Is there a simple workaround or solution to this?

You're asking InDesign to do something it's not designed to do, namely, to treat a nested-style section of a paragraph as an independent paragraph. That's called a "run-in paragraph" in Adobe FrameMaker, and it's been a beloved feature there since FrameMaker was introduced in '89, about ten years before InDesign.
You can make a formal feature enhancement request here: Wishform Many InDesign features have come into being from user requests, so lend your voice, and be patient. Explain why you think a run-in paragraph feature would be useful.
Others have asked about this, and there are a number of workarounds that may or may not be suitable for you. Let's hope that some of the more-intense forum folks can help you with a useful search term for this forum, so that you can review what's been suggested and tried in the past, and what results you can expect.
In the meantime, you might consider inserting the second-level heading in an inline anchored text frame in the paragraph. It will be an independent paragraph but you can adjust appear on the same line as following paragraph. Then you can extract it for the TOC.
    Here's an example:

  • Table of Contents based on Character Style?

Trying to do an annotated table of contents containing captions of all photos in a book, followed by verbose descriptions. Purpose is to avoid cluttering pages bearing the photos, which will have only a brief caption is followed by the name of the owner of the object in the caption, in the same paragraph.
Book will include a listing of the captions in page order (i.e., table of contents) without the owner names, followed by verbose descriptions. Can I get around this by making character styles for each (caption, owner, respectively), and create a TOC based one character style? If not, can I configure the para. style of the caption to omit the line-feed, and base the TOC on that?
Plan is then manually to add descriptions to each TOC entry, immediately following captions. Will that stay intact, if any subsequent photo locations are changed?

    Jack wrote:
OK, have done that, and all required content is now showing up in the TOC.
I'm glad you managed to sort that out.
Is it possible to omit the line breaks between elements referring to the same page?
Hmmm...the thing is...a paragraph is a paragraph is a paragraph. By nature, it breaks to the next line. There are ways to fake it but none (that I can think of) which will hold up to an automated TOC update. Maybe someone else will come along with a trick I don't know about.
So then, for the moment let's assume the only way to get the caption and the description into the same TOC paragraph is to put them in the same paragraph on the document page. Also still assuming I truly understand the end-result you want; here's how I would do it:
If you set the separate-but-threaded caption and description frames as I first proposed, you'll need to go back and take out the paragraph break between the caption and the description. It will have to be replaced by a simple "frame break" which will push the description (now the same paragraph and paragraph style as the caption), into its own hidden frame as before. If, in the TOC, you want the caption and the description to have differing formatting, it would also be useful to insert (between the caption and the description on the document page) an End Nested Style Here character before that frame break. (If the caption and the description can be formatted identically, you won't need this step, and they can simply be formatted by your simple TOC Entry Style paragraph style.)
All above can be done using Find/Change. Find: End of Paragraph (^p). Change to: End Nested Style Here (^h) Frame Break (^R). So here's what it looks like in the dialog.
If the captions and descriptions are the only text in your document, you probably get away with Change All, otherwise it may be best to step through finding and changing one instance at a time.
Now if you update your TOC, the descriptions should be pulled up into the same paragraph as the captions.
Take advantage of the Nested Style possibility to vary the formatting of the caption and description by adding a nested style to your TOC Entry Style. Set it to style the description portion of the entry. Then add a Nested Style and set a Character Style to format the caption portion of the entry... "through 1 End Nested Style Character".

  • Is it possible to create a control file without the datafiles

    Hi All,
Is it possible to create a control file without the datafiles?
on any OS or DB version
    regards,
    sachin

    if I understand properly:
    - you have a script to recreate the controlfile
    - you have all of your database files backed up except your controlfiles
This should work as this is how we sometimes refresh dev databases:
    1) restore the copies of the database files
    2) recreate the controlfile
    3) recover the database files to the desired point in time (if hot backup or archivelogs are available, otherwise, it would be as of the time of the backup)
    4) add temp files to temporary tablespace(s)
The simpler solution would be to backup your controlfile at the same time as your datafiles (RMAN or o/s copy).
I hope I understood your question properly.

You can remove the assembly tree by doing a roundtrip in 3D Toolkit, here's how:
    - start Acrobat 3D
    - drag & drop a CAD file
    - click on 3D Annot to activate
    - right-click on 3D
    - select 'Edit in 3D Toolkit'
    - 3D Toolkit launches
    - click in 'Scene Tree' panel
    - right-click on top assembly name
    - select 'Tools->Collapse Hierarchy'
    - select 'File->Save'
    - select 'File->Exit'

I just got an 8GB iPod touch, I'm concerned that I will not have enough gigabytes for future music purchases, Is it possible to upgrade to a 32GB without having to pay $300 for a new iPod?

Well, obviously you can't walk into the apple store and get them to upgrade your iPod for you for FREE when the 32GB costs at least a 100$ more.
Just stick with the 8GB, don't download rubbish apps.

  • Find/Change Item Numbers and create Table of Contents

Hello! I need help to find all my item numbers and apply a paragraph style to it so I can use them to create a Table of Contents page.
    Sample item numbers
    #12345
    #12345-5
    #12345-20
    #12345-ABC
    #12345/N
I tried entering #^?^?^?^?^? on the Find/Change box and but this will find exactly the 5 characters after the # sign. I wonder if you can find all characters starting with # and until the last characters.
Once I find all the item numbers, how can I apply the paragraph style for only those characters after the # sign? Because I only want to show the item numbers without the # sign on the Table of contents/Index page.
By the way, I have InDesign CS2 which have no GREP function Maybe I can do this without the GREP?
I really appreciate any help. Thank you very much.

You actually have two problems here. The first is to assign the paragraph style. For that you can use GREP.
Find #\d+ and leave the change field blank, but in the change formatting pick the paragraph style. Stricly speaking you only need to find #\d or even just # because a paragraph style applies to an entire paragraph, so assigning it to any character inthe paragraph will assign it to the entire paragraph.
Which is your second problem. The TOC is based on paragraph styles and will include all of the text in each paragraph (up to the character limit for a TOC entry, which I think is 256 characters). You can't make a TOC and only use some of the paragraph. For that you need to use an index, or you need to make hidden or non-pinting frames with only the exact text you want in the TOC and assign a unique style to those.
It's also possible someone has written (or could write) a script that can find text strings that match a pattern such as your numers, assign a character style to them (you could actually do that part in the paragraph style by adding a nested GREP style), then making a list of the text strings along with the page number on which they appear -- almost the same as an index except it would be based on character style, not an index marker.
