Is it possible to crop a circle or oval in Aperture?

Hi,
I would like to crop my photo's as circles or ovals without having to buy Photoshop. Is it possible in Aperture? I schoot and edit in raw.
thank you
lilian

I am only wondering how it will effect the quality of my picture.
That will depend on the quality you use to export from Aperture to Preview, and also on the quality you use to save from Preview. Export at the best quality you need for the purpose you want the photo for.
The basic idea is to use the "elliptical selection" from the "Edit Toolbar", then drag the mouse across the rectangular area that contains your ellipse/circle and then copy the selected area to the clipboard. Now create a new image (File > New from Clipboard) and this will create a new photo with transparent background. Then save this image in a format that supports transparency - tiff or png.

is iti possible to crop photos of art that maybe unusal shapes...quadrilateral, pentagon etc

    Not with iPhoto, no.
You could try with an external editor or an app that can apply masking overlays - even Pages, for instance.
In order of price here are some suggestions:
    Seashore (free)
    The Gimp (free)
    Graphic Coverter ($45 approx)
    Acorn ($50 approx)
    Pixelmator ($50 approx)
    Photoshop Elements ($75 approx)
There are many, many other options. Search on MacUpdate. You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

  • Crop a circle shape in PSE 6 for mac

How can I crop a circle shape from a photo and adjust the size or dimensions of the crop?
    Thanks

Use the elliptical marquee tool, hold down shift to constrain a circle, then when you've got everything the way you want, Image>crop.

  • Possible to crop songs?

I would like to put a song i have in itunes to my cell phone using blacktooth. but I don't want the beginning of the song as my ring tone, so Is it possible to crop parts of the song using free software?

It's possible to do this in iTunes as well for any non-iTMS tracks.
set your Import settings to MP3 and the bit rate supported by your phone, you can even choose mono if that's appropriate for your phone.
Now, set the Start & Stop times in iTunes for the file so that just the desired clip is played. Then Convert the file to the selected format. iTunes makes a copy of the original file, and the copy is limited to the desired start/stop times.
There you have it - a short MP3 ready for loading into your cell phone. Don't forget to reset your Import settings to your normal CD ripping values. And, you may want to get the short file out of iTunes so it doesn't show up during regular music playback.

  • Crop a circle from a jpeg

    Hi All,
I have been trying for some time (many hours of research and software trials) to succesfully cut a circular  object (a football) fom a jpeg which as we know always have  the rectangular area around it. A friend suggested  Photoshop but as it would be quite an investment for what would be for the time being a single issue. My questions are
    1 Can Photoshop achieve this?
    2. What product would I need?
    3. Is there a trial version so I  can experiment?
Many thanks if anyone can help.

    I'll run you through it.

  • Possible to crop outside the image limits?

In Photoshop, you can crop an image outside of the image's boundaries and photoshop will add a colored background to the extended area. Is this possible to do in Aperture? Here is an example of the end result of what I am talking about on flickr:

    Thanks.

You can use the BorderFX plugin to export images with a border like that:

  • Please help me! is it possible to CROP to change aspect ratio

    this might not be possible.
so as some of you probably know, i borrowed a high end camera and shot a project, not knowing the stupid letterbox option was on, which, essentially doesn't make it 16 9, just 3:2 with block boarders. its essentially the "optical zoom" equivalent of the camcorder world and i don't even know why its an option. but anyways...
what i have is standard 3:2 DV footage with black strips along the top and bottom, making it 16:9 in shape. the actual image itself is perfect 16:9 ratio....is there anyway that anyone can think of where i could crop this footage to a 16:9 size exporting, not resizing? hypothetically speaking, the actual image minus the bars on my 3:2 footage is 16:9. there has to be a way to get rid of those stupid bars by cropping.
i changed my Sequence settings to HD 720 16:9 and scaled up the image to fit, and it fit perfectly, but i feel like the scaling is making me lose quality. (does what i just explained make sense?)
if anyone can help it would be hugely appreciated, thanks for putting up with me
    mike

Mike - sorry about confusing you about HD. Let's drop that for now.
Here -- take 5 minutes looking at this. Should explain what I'm talking about. Not EXACTLY what you want to do, but the part about putting 4:3 into 16:9 is the same idea.

  • Possible to crop a QT movie?

I would like to crop the sides of a 15-second clip. Probably not possible in QT Pro, maybe in Final Cut Pro (which I have but don't know how to use it very well except for a couple of operations). Anyway, just thought I'd ask in case someone out there knows....
    Thanks!

A mask is the easiest method. A tiny file size addition to the source and no re-compression because there is no export.
MPEG Streamclip (free) can also be used to crop QuickTime formats. The user sets the crop dimensions so it could be from any or all sides.
When you use a mask track be sure to use Save As (instead of save). Sometimes edits made after export will break the "fast start" feature of your QT file. Save As will restore it and leave your original untouched.
Mask tracks can also alter the video display. No need to have your movies play back inside a "box".

Four different video tracks in my example. No "box".

  • Acrobat 9-Possible to Crop to TrimBox?

    Hello,
I have a feeling this is very easy to do. I am not familiar with any acrobat scripting. Where's the object model viewer? How do you add the script?(I hate this question)
I know I can figure it out with a little research. Any help would be a very appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Danny

Here's a link to the documentation. You'll want to use the setPageBoxes method of the Doc object, after using getPageBoxes to get the crop rect of the page.
Where you place the code depends on when you want the code to run. You can use the interactive JavaScript console (Ctrl+J) to run code. Just highlight it and press Ctrl+Enter.

  • Is it possible to crop with iMovie?

I have a movie and want to crop the picture and only keep a small rectangle. Can this be done in iMovie? If not, how about in Quicktime or something else on the Mac?
    Thanks!

Hi Michael - are we talking about an imported photo, or a video clip?
If it's a still photo you can crop it by using the Zoom function found in the Photo Pane. Obviously quality will be reduced.
You could make a still-frame from a video clip, and zoom that similarly, but to do that you need to also select an imported photo AS WELL AS the still-frame to get Ken Burns to recognise it. [The photo can be deleted afterwards if you do not need it]. Again, quality will be reduced.

  • Is it possible to crop an item?

I have a graphic that I want to crop into 4 different parts.  I could bring it up in Illustrator and separate the items but I was hoping there was a way to crop those items out in AE first.  Looking into it, I see something about using a "region of interest" tool that kind of sounds like what I want to do but I cant find anything that explains how its used, not that I can understand anyway

It's called masking in AE. Take a look in the help files or Start Here. You use the mask tools or the pen tools to do this.
This is really basic stuff. Region of interest is not what you want.

  • Is it possible to control the naming convention used by Aperture when importing photos?  If so, how

When I import photos from my camera, I have them placed into projects based on the date the photos were taken. However, I do not like the naming convention used by Aperture as it causes the projects to sort into a non-chronologial order. The convention is MMM-DD-YYYY and I want to change it to YYYY-MM-DD. Is it possible in Aperture 3.2.4 to do this?

In the Import  panel you can edit the preset for the file name format to "Image year - image month - image day - index" for example; the preset for folder names seems to be gone in Aperture 3,3 - at least I cannot find it any longer. You only seem to be able to enter the folder name manually in the Import panel.

  • Is it possible to automate a series of actions in Aperture?

I've recently started using automate of repeated features in Photoshop. Now that I'm getting used to the speed increase in workflow, I'm looking for something similar in Aperture. Is there some kind of automate of workflow that is available for Aperture so I can push one button to cause a series of workflow actions to happen?
    Thanks

Open up Automator, I think it's pretty intuitive.
Or once it's open, click on the Help menu and choose Automator Help. There's basically a whole manual in there.

  • Is cropping possible with Compressor-2?

I'm a newbie and have a newbie question.
I have a movie clip (.mov) that I need to compress for the web. My clip shows a guy running on a treadmill in a gym.
The clip is currently 720x480 and I need to crop out everything except for the guy's tennis shoes and end up will a finished size of 200x100.
Is it possible to crop video with Compressor, the same way you crop images with Photoshop? Can I specify the exact size I want (200x100)? If so, how is this done?
    Thanks in advance.
    Warren

There are two ways you can do it:
From the preview window, resize the red cropping border; hold down shift to constrain the aspect ratio of the crop.
From the settings inspector, click the Geometry tab, and voila!
