Is it possible to delete recently used contacts from the app switcher on ios8?

I have been unsuccessful in finding a way to delete entries in the recently used contacts that appear when entering the app switcher on ios8. I think it should be possible to disable the feature, as well as swiping out individual entries.

Yes, it is possible. When you are in the relevant inbox, tap the 'edit' button on right hand top corner. now select the mails you want to delete by tapping in the small circle next to the mail. keep selecting and in the end tap the red delete button that will show you how many are being deleted

If you are referring to the individual text message itself with the contacts name, follow the steps below to delete it.
(1) Click on "Menu"
(2) Click on "Messaging"
(3) Click on "Inbox"
(4) From your inbox, scroll down till you get to the contact's text message that you wish to delete and click on the "Options" button.
(5) Click on "Delete"

How can I delete all my contacts from the icloud?

I've been working with Apple's sometime, and now I have been forced to use iCloud after MobileMe.
After syncing a couple of devices, some things went quite wrong. My iCloud contacts are now a complete mess. I have lots of duplicates. And over 8000 contacts.
What I want to do is, is do a cleanup, and clear all the iCloud contacts, and import a new 'clean' address book from 1 mac to the icloud, which then in it's turn can be synced to all the devices?
Is dit possible? I've noticed deleting manually is a pain, because the browser doesn't really allow more then 50 contacts or so at a time, before the browser freezes.

Go to your Contacts on your Mac - if more than one pick the most accurate; delete any contacts you don't want. Select all the contacts, and from the File menu choose 'Export...'>'Export vCard'. Save the resultant file safely: it will be your 'master' list.
Now delete all the contacts from whichever device has the most in it. Sync with iCloud. If necessary repeat with different Macs. The result should be that the deletions sync to iCloud and in the end you finish up with empty Contacts lists everywhere.
Now you can import your saved file to one of your Macs. Make sure you import it under 'iCloud' not 'On My Mac'. Then it should propagate iCloud and any other devices. Keep the saved file at least until you are satisfied that all is in order.

Deleting an unwanted Update from the App Store

I got a message that I had 3 updates waiting for me, to install. I downloaded 2 of them, but then it moved on to 3rd one, iPhoto, started to download, and I spotted it was over a Gig large.
Now I don't want over a Gig of my memory being taken up by an app that I don't even use. I don't want to lose my internet for the hours it is going to take to download. And I don't want to lose over a Gig of my maximum 10 Gig monthly download allowance...so can I delete it from my Updates page? So far I have not spotted a way to do it!

Now I have paused it, and the Download button now reads Resume. I also now have a Download Progress Bar sitting empty under my Launchpad on the Dock, and I have an empty square in my Launchpad named Paused...I would really like to get rid of all this stuff, if there is a way.....?

You cannot delete Apps from the Purchased list. you can however hide them.
You can only do this from iTunes on a computer, it cannot be done on your iPad. It doesn't need to be your own computer. You can borrow one with iTunes and login with your account.

You need to use a drive that is larger than your Mac's internal drive for Time Machine, so a USB stick will not work. You need to buy an external hard drive. It's worth it. Time machine is a fantastic backup system, keeping not just a single backup, but multiple versions of your files as well (hence the need for a larger drive).

The recently used icons represent exactly that - apps you have used recently. The icons on the list do NOT mean that the apps are still running. The only apps that continue to run, and might be profitably quit from this list are those which are still playing the music you will be listening to, or GPS apps.

I have a backup from about 4-5 months ago available on an external hdd as a time machine backup. Can I add/update contacts from the back up rather than restore? The reason i wish to do this is because in the update i didnt lose any messages, so all of the people i have met and networked with since that last update those many months ago, i have in my messages listings. They are all unidentified numbers at present but over time i will be able to work through the messages and based on the conversation recall who each was with. Also, yesterday, some two weeks after the update had left my contacts list entirely empty... a vast majority just reappeard, though all of them are without any phone numbers, all just emails or facebook contacts. This is the work of facebook not mac/ios6 isnt it...? Any help here would be greatly apprecaited. I am about 2 days from flying to canada and having those contacts would make life a lot easier.

You should be syncing your contacts with an app on your computer or cloud service (iCloud, Gmail, Yahoo, etc), and not relying on a backup. If you haven't been doing this, start now and then restore your old backup. You will then be able to sync the new contacts back into the phone. However, you will lose all messages, etc newer thant the backup.
