Is it possible to disable HDMI audio while using digital optical?

As the title says I am looking for a way to do so as it is becoming a pain to turn down the audio on the TV each time when using my aTV. My TV doesn't allow me to mute the speakers depending on the input selected (it is all or nothing).
This post is more for Apple themselves to implement into the next version of iOS that they release for the device as I have tried through the menu but to no avail.

Sadly my surround sound receiver does not have an HDMI input/output. Therefore the HDMI from the aTV runs to the TV and the digital optical to the surround sound receiver. I have coax cable connected to the TV (no need for an STB as the TV has a digital tuner) which requires the speakers to be enabled.
One would think that you wouldn't need audio through HDMI if infact you are using digital optical hence my request to allow this as a native feature through the settings of the aTV.

  • Need full resolution HDMI audio and 2 CH optical simultaneously

Am working on an install for a customer who has a Mac Mini.  He is running XBMC for all his movies.  I need to run HDMI to his surround processor with full resolution audio while running the optical out in 2 channel pcm for his whole house audio.  Is this possible?

As standard sound would go to one or the other output, it is possible to configure things to send sound to both at the same time, but I would strongly expect this would require both to be configured the same i.e. stereo, rather than one being stereo and the other 5.1.
To configure the Mac to send to both you need to use the Audio MIDI Setup tool in the Utilities folder.
    See https://support.apple.com/kb/PH5178?locale=en_US
and How to combine multiple audio interfaces by creating an aggregate device - Apple Support
It maybe that the easiest or more practical option would be to use an AV Receiver set to output via both its stereo and HDMI ports. The Mac would then just send via HDMI to the AV Receiver which would if needed handle the conversion and splitting of the signal.

  • EDID - Disable HDMI Audio

    Hello,
I have an early 2009 MacBook Pro that is connected to an external display using Mini-Display Port to HDMI. (HDMI audio is not supported on this model). To enable audio I must use an analog audio cable. The external display will only accept analog if there is no HDMI audio present.  I found a solution for Windows that disables  audio capability on the external display by using a registry EDID override. However, I'm not certain how to go about this process on Mac. I would be incredibly grateful for any suggestions.
    Thanks.

    Solved.
I'll post the necessary steps upon request.

  • Audio disabled in Skype when using Digital Camcorder

    Hello guys,
I have a question regarding using DV Camcorder for Skype videochat. I have Mac Pro, OS X Leopard.
I am using digital Camcorder which is connected to Mac via FireWire connection. The problem is, that person I chat with is seeing my video fine, but cannot hear my audio. (I am using a standard external microphone connected to the camcorder via XLR, and camcorder shows that audio is received fine)
Is there any setting I have to change? Or anything else I have to adjust in order to fix this problem?
Thank you so much for any advise

There must be some users out there who for some odd reason don't won't the digital output to be mutable. Are they the majority of digital output users? Seems unlikely.
Can't we get our mute key back as an option for digital out in the Sound prefs panel?

  • Beginning of audio cut off when using digital optical out

    Hi all,
This is my first post here since switching to Mac earlier this year.
I'm having problems with the first second or so of audio being cut off when commencing playback using the Mac's digital optical out.  This happens with any source of audio in a variety of different applications (e.g. video, iTunes, even system sounds for notifications and the like).   I have used a mini Toslink to Toslink optical cable to connect from the Mac's audio out jack to the receiver of my digital speakers (Logitech Z906).  Once playback has commenced, audio plays fine; it's just the very first second or so which is usually clipped.
The problem does NOT happen when using the built-in speakers.  I've also noticed that if I unplug the cable from the receiver end (leaving it connected at the Mac end) I can see the red LED light shining the optical signal down the cable, but this goes out exactly 30 seconds after audio stops playing.  If I start another audio playback within 30 seconds, there is no loss of audio at the beginning, but if I wait longer than 30 seconds (i.e. after the LED has gone out) I encounter the problems with the initial audio being clipped.   I therefore suspect that this is an OS issue which is shutting down the digital optical out when audio is not actually playing (presumably to save power or something).  I wouldn't have a problem with this if it actually worked properly when audio playback recommences, but it seems that there is a slight delay whilst the optical out service 'wakes up' again and this is leading to the clipped audio.
I've done some searching of the internet (and these support communities) for this problem and there seems to be little information about it.  It does seem to affect a few other people though and some have resorted to third party applications or scripts which play silent audio at regular intervals to keep the optical output running permanently (e.g. SoundStay (https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/39833/soundstay) - no longer maintained and the download link is dead).  However, these amount to a kludge at best which treat the symptoms rather than the underlying cause, which I would rather resolve.
I tried to log a support case with Apple in order to have them call me, only to have the system tell me that my support has already expired, despite having purchased the Mac only 4 months ago.  It seems that my Apple One-Year Limited Warranty is actually only 90 days when it comes to telephone support.  So here I am!
Does anyone else have this problem with optical out, and how can I resolve this?  Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
    Thank you.

    Hello kcore66,
Would it be possible for you to upload one of the files in
question so that I can take a look. In Captivate 1.01 there is an
intermittent problem where sometimes the audio is either cut off or
just doesn't play when you publish / preview. To get around this
simply moving the audio object back and forth along the timeline
and then positioning it back in it's original position works 9
    times out of 10.

  • Disable Shutdown Button while using Terminal Services

When I remote desktop into the server remotely, the shutdown button shut's down the server.  Granted I have the reason for shutdown turned on, so some less skillful admin's have to fill in the reason and click okay before they really shutdown the server... but
Is it possible to replace the shutdown button with a Log Off button for remote sessions or disable it all together?
Seems like it could be a huge problem if I (or someone logged in as Admin) shutdown the server that's 4 hours away.

Absolutely, we have had this since 2000 (though we do tend to change the name in each new policy editor) :-).
In 2008 you need to use group policy and set the user config -> admin templates -> start menu and taskbar -> remove and prevent access to the shutdown, restart, sleep and hibernate comands = enabled
You probably want to apply this to a machine OU with loopback policy so it only applies to terminal severs.
You may also want to filter it to apply only to the remote desktop users group (this way it only applies when you logged in remotely).
if you still need to shutdwon the remote machine when remotely connected then use ctrl-alt-end to bring up the remote SAS and the shutdown button is there in the bottom right hand corner.

  • Problems synchronizing video and audio while using FME 2.5

    Hello...
I use FME2.5 to deliver media to justin´s server for
    broadcasting on the internet...
As capture video I use webcammax to capture video from files
    avi and divx...
But somehow since I started using FME2.5 sonme videos are
perfectly sinchronized while streaming but others no...the audio is
    not sunchronized at all...
I stream the media on justin in H.264 at a bit rate of
    300kbps 25fps and 320x240 for video...
    and audio mp3...
Is taht a way to synchronize it?
And do adobe have a complete solution of capturing video
files and streaming it to justin server?...
    Thanks...

I too encounter similar kind of problem, but i am using Sony
HD handy cam which captures HD video and FME 3.5 for encoding, i
tried out both medium and high bandwidth options in it (FME 3.5),
vp6 and H.264 and i found vp6 was more ok in light of lip sync (AV
synchronizing) but there was problem with H.264 in both high and
medium settings..so is there any option to get synch with H.264 on
    FME 3.5..???

  • I know I've heard that iPads/iPhones can't get viruses but is it possible that they can? While using my iPad, it keeps going in and out of apps. On Facebook, status and profiles keep getting clicked and it keeps zooming in and out. Can anyone help

I Have an iPad mini, iOS 8.1. When I'm on my iPad, it keeps going in and out of random apps. Going to settings is the worse. As soon as I click settings and it opens,it starts clicking different things and tries turning on and off settings! In Facebook, profiles and status get clicked. The screen zooms in and out multiple times. It reminds me of when you call the help desk for a computer or a computer at work and they gain access and move around clicking and you're doing nothing. Basically things are being clicked and I'm not doing it.....can anyone help?

At this point, I would go for reset to its factory default condition, using the iTunes program to get a clean system install. That way you'll clean everything out and just have it set up the way it would come from the factory. You'll need to do your backup (on the iTunes program too) and be sure you understand which stuff will be saved and which will not (from the links below). Also turn off any anti-virus program you may have on your desktop. Then when you reset it to the factory default condition, don't restore your backup just yet ... until you check it out without your data put back on it. Verify its operation first, to make sure that you know it's okay. Hopefully everything is okay at that point, otherwise you'll have to take it into Apple to check it out for any hardware failure.

  • Not able to control volume up/down while using Digital AV Adapter.

    Hi there,
I am using iPhone 5, iPad 4 and digital av adapter. Video mirroring works fine but can't control volume while the devices are plugged with the digital av adapter. The volume button just disappear when it is plugged.
I use 24 inch monitor with speaker and non-apple HDMI cable.
    Wondering anyone has any idea.
Thank you for your comments in advance.

When an apple device is connected to a HDMI display e.g. a TV, it is possible indeed usual for the sound output to be also automatically sent over the HDMI connection to the TV speakers. This works fine.
However, in this configuration the on-screen volume control on the apple device is disabled and the device has no way itself to control the volume level. The volume level can be controlled on the TV. As this stands, this could be considered normal correct behavior.

  • How do I change the audio output to digital optical for my home theater?

It's only using the hdmi for audio on the television..

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Unless the Apple TV is broken it always passes audio over the optical output.
Check your sound system is set up correctly, or try changing the Audio out and Dolby Digital settings on the Apple TV (settings > audio & video)

  • When playing an audio CD using the optical out...

Is the Macbook doing any signal processing at all or is it just piping out the raw digital data from the CD to the receiver?

    Jasmes,
Well, the signal is not going directly from the drive to the output, that's certain. It is being processed by iTunes (or Quicktime, which amounts to the same thing). So the question is not whether it is being processed, but rather whether it's being altered during that processing.
My guess would be no, that the signal is being passed by iTunes directly to the output, unless you have the equalizer turned on.

  • Is it possible to permanently disable HDMI output from Logic?

Every time my monitors wake from sleep, Logic asks if I want to switch my audio output to HDMI... pretty irritating as I have agressive energy saving settings, which I'd like to keep, as I try to keep my studio as energy efficient as possible, and 2 big LCD's suck a lot of current. The box that pops up also causes playback to stutter, so if I wake the monitor during playback there is that issue as well (also very irritating).
In windows there is an option to permanently disable hdmi audio, is there something similar in OSX or in Logic itself?
    Thanks for the help!

Do you have timing problems with HDMI? I stopped using HDMI because the audio and video didn't seem to sync properly. The difference wasn't huge but big enough to cause it to be hard to recognize points in the piano roll and audio edit windows at some zoom ratios.

  • A88XM Gaming + R9 270x HDMI Audio Skipping/Dropping

I have been using HDMI audio out for a long time and I have NEVER run into this issue. I have just spent the last 6 hours trying to troubleshoot this issue and I am about to RMA this board and go with an Intel.
I have an MSI R9 270x and used it with an Asrock A88X board and never had an issue. I "upgraded" to the MSI A88XM Gaming motherboard and now this same video card has audio skipping and dropouts over HDMI.
    I have done the following:
    1. New HDMI Cable.
    2. AMD Catalyst uninstall/reinstall/upgrade/rollback - pretty much everything you can possibly do to troubleshoot a driver issue. Went into safe mode to wipe drivers using DDU.
    3. Finally resorted to reinstalling Windows 8.1. Did NOT fix issue.
    4. Bios is up to date. Drivers are up to date. Have disabled and enabled realtek device in system properties. Nothing changes the sound issues.
I can't for the life of me figure out why I am having audio issues. Video displays perfectly fine, not a single issue. But audio keeps dropping for a split second to my surround receiver, as if the PCM audio stream gets cut. Sometimes there's what seems to be static sounds as well.
It's really annoying. Again, I have had this card for a couple of months and have been using HDMI for a long time, with my 7870 and my 6850 before that. I have never had this issue before. I do not wish to use Digital Optical because it doesn't do 5.1 PCM out to my soundsystem.
Please help me, I am about to give up on this motherboard.

I would argue about this. Indeed they are a bit more supportive for Intel boards, but let's be fair: Intel has released quite few NEW series, whereas AMD hasn't released anything new yet (FX4-8 were around for years, and still the same socket). That is why MSI releases more BIOSes for Intel based boards, as these are more common. Just about 9 series came out, and now X99 will come out with DDR4 for Intel. Whereas for AMD I still haven't heard anything about plans of releasing boards based on DDR4. So that doesn't surprise me why they support Intel more than AMD. AMD is way behind Intel (and that's not an opinion but the fact). And surely not just MSI is more supportive for Intel, but it depends on popularity of brand's boards, because if Asus AMD boards are more popular than Intel, then obviously they will more likely support AMD based board, rather than Intel.
You don't get what I am saying here. I'm just gonna cherry pick this example:
    http://www.msi.com/support/mb/A88XG45_GAMING.html#down-bios
    1 Bios update since launch.
    http://www.msi.com/support/mb/Z97-GAMING-7.html#down-bios
    4 Bios update since launch.
Two of the top high end boards for each respective platform, both released recently. In fact, Intel is more recent. You can clearly see that they are more interested in providing post launch support for Intel vs AMD.
Go to Asus webpage, and just pick any A88X board, even the mid range ones. You can see a bunch of bios updates, same with Asrock, same with Gigabyte.
I can't honestly believe this board has been out since early march and already post launch support is dead. As a motherboard manufacturer, you don't win customers with fancy features and cool looks. You win customers based on post lauch tech support.
    Check this thread:
    http://www.overclock.net/t/1469169/msi-a88x-g45-gaming-fm2-goodness
People who are mid range enthusiasts ARE in fact interested in this board. But BIOS issues stagnate any interest in it, along with VRM issues.
It's a great board, and MSI has what seems to be good AMD offerings, but they need to get their BIOSes right. Proof is right there on Newegg, pull up any AMD motherboard on Newegg and for every positive review, you have a negative review on issues with BIOSes and random things just not "working", no driver updates, etc.
That's what I don't get. Why bother even releasing enthusiast directed AMD boards, and not bother supporting them after they have been launched?

  • Dv73060us connected to t v via HDMI Audio only from PC Help, please OS is Windows 7

I have connected my pc , using HDMI cable, to the TV, Everything seems to work well except for the fact that the audio is through the pc only. I went to control panel. hardware, sound and made the hdmi option the default.Audio still from pc only. Someone's help, please

    wcrawf,
The brand of TV makes a difference sometmes... older Philips TVs in particular are fussy and have their own setup in the control panels (cannot recall where, this is from a thread from last ... Oct?  I think I can find it if you need the info).
There is an "Order of Events" that needs to be followed; it is more important sometimes than others.
If the issue is a "simple one", then this may help as a "Check List":
Resolving HDMI Display and Sound Issues
Reprint of an earlier post - something here may work:
NOTE:  If this does work, the "Hard Reset" rule applies - it should "stick", that is, you shouldn't have to do it this way each time - it's just a matter of getting it set up.
Order of Events - A "Hard Reset" of the HDMI Audio Setup:
    Enable Digital Audio (S/PDIF)
Connect HDMI  from computer toTV’s HDMI/DVI input port
Set your TV input to HDMI/DVI input.   (You won’t have sound yet.)
Turn of the TV.  Shut down the computer.
Boot the computer - wait for it to boot all the way.  Log in.
Sound should be "dead" - no system sounds at this point.
All the audio should be going through the HDMI port.
If not, and you are getting sound, try setting "Digital Audio" setting (if you have it) as an option, [quote] "although this should not be necessary."
Remove any headphones and any other non-HDMI output from computer and Reboot.
If you get sound, it's still not ready - play with the sound output.
When you get it to the point where the sound is "dead" (while the HDMI port is still connected) after you reboot, you are ready.
    Turn on the TV.
Check for Sound through the HDMI port.  Should be working.
    The FIX-ALL Link for HDMI:
I could take credit for this - but, you know - this is just not my area of expertise...  Your solution may be here - almost everything that can happen to HDMI has happened to someone at some point.  I've used this forum before - it's a great reference.
